Shagari: North Needs to Reward S’South’s Past Support
2011
From Mohammed Aminu in Sokoto, 07.04.2010
Deputy governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Mukhtari Shehu Shagari has called on politicians from the North to be cautious in the way they emphasised the issue of zoning in deciding the next president. He said the North naturally owes it a duty to compensate the people from the South-South zone, who have supported the North in all the political arrangements the country has operated in the last 50 years.
In an interview with THISDAY in Sokoto at the weekend, Shagari said President Goodluck Jonathan has every right like every other Nigerians to contest for the presidency next year.

He said: “I believe it is time for people of the North to reward the South-South for their loyalty in the past because I cannot remember at anytime in the history of the country when the South-South did not go along with the North. So, I think we should also reciprocate the gesture and if at the end of the day, the PDP decides to field Jonathan as the presidential candidate, I believe it is the duty of the North, especially the Northwest, to support him because one good turn deserves another.
“We should not make this thing to look as if it is tribal, ethnic or regional. Some people are now saying that Jonathan should not contest and power should remain in the North. I want to remind them that the South-South for over 50 years have been supportive to the political aspirations of the North. Thus, if today somebody from South-South is in power, it is just like our own brother whose people have been very supportive of ours in the past.”

According to him, the debate over zoning of the presidency is strictly an internal affair of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and if eventually the party decides to pick Jonathan as the presidential candidate, million of Northerners will vote for him to make sure he wins, irrespective of the threat by some politicians from the Northern part of the country.
“I believe Jonathan can deliver and once he delivers, then Nigerians will now decide whether he is the right person to be voted for or not. Just like I have said earlier, if the PDP fields him as a candidate, we will campaign for him and I can assure you that Nigerians and Northerners in particular will vote for him,” Shagari added.

The former minister of water resources noted that the country is in dire need of a purposeful and visionary leadership because the infrastructure in the country is in very serious decay, while there is need for the economy of the country to be given serious attention.
He said it is time for politicians to start thinking more of Nigeria as a nation and stop all this tribal and ethnic politics. Shagari added that what is really important is for Nigerians to choose a president that will turn the nation around and improve its infrastructure, security and power.

He emphasised that these are the issues that should really worry Nigerians, rather than where the presidential candidate of a particular party comes from. He appealed to Nigerians to give Jonathan the support he needs to deliver the promises made to Nigerians in the areas of power, security and infrastructure.
On the recent appointment of Professor Attahiru Jega as INEC Chairman, Shagari described the INEC chief as a hard-working and upright man from a good family.
He expressed optimism that Jega will do whatever he can to ensure he conducts a free, fair and credible election and that votes will count in 2011 elections.

SportsCan Nigerians Ever Be United Behind Super Eagles? by silami(op): 10:16am On Jun 11, 2010
Tens of thousands of South Africa fans danced and chanted in the streets of Johannesburg on Wednesday, cheering their team as World Cup excitement reached fever-pitch two days before kick-off.

Clad in yellow shirts, scarves and hats and blowing their loud vuvuzelas, people of all ages joined a public parade to cheer on the team said to have helped unite a country still divided 16 years after the end of apartheid.

This makes me wonder if Nigerians will ever be united behind SUPER EAGLE even when they seem not be rated high like Bafana Bafana. what do u think?

By keeping quite ur guilty because you are in a position to prevent this from reoccurring, since you said this not the first time and for sure will not be the last one. By reporting him, there is a risk of him implicating you and probably even threatening you. there also the possibility of may be sharing some of the proceeds with the top management, this Nigeria its possible. But believe if don't open up u will continue to be a slave to your own conscience. My suggestion is, call him tell him you saw with evidence and give him two options of him returning what he stole and reporting himself to his superior officer or you will do that for him. if he refuses go ahead and report him. But that this may create enmity or even cause u ur job but believe you will be happier. tcare

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Dangote Moves To Buy 16% Stake In Arsenal by silami(op): 7:47am On May 24, 2010
Dangote Moves to Buy 16% Stake in Arsenal
By Ayodele Aminu with agency reports, 05.24.2010

Multi-billionaire industrialist, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, is considering buying 16 per cent stake in English Premier League club, Arsenal.

The stake is said to be worth £96 million (about N25 billion) as the battle for the takeover of the elite football club appears set for a grand finale.

Dangote confirmed to THISDAY last night that he was “seriously considering” investing in the club. He has already registered his interest with Blackstone, the American finance house contracted by Lady Nina Bracewell-Smith, Arsenal’s fourth-largest shareholder who wants to sell her stake worth about £96 million. She expects the sale will fetch her around £160 million.

Dangote told THISDAY that his interest had been in the making “for a while”, while his relationship and support for Arsenal dates back “a long time”. “It started in 1980 when I forged a relationship with Mr David Dein, former vice-chairman of the board of Arsenal,” he said, explaining that Dein sold him his first consignment of sugar at the time.

Dangote began watching Arsenal’s matches as Dein’s guest and remained a firm supporter of the club.
“That is when I developed an interest in Arsenal, and when the opportunity presented itself to acquire a stake in the club, I went for it,” he said.

If Dangote’s bid is successful, he could become a major factor in the cold takeover war between American billionaire, Stan Kroenke, and Uzbek oligarch, Alisher Usmanov – the two biggest investors in the company.
Kroenke currently owns 29.9 per cent of the club while Usmanov owns 26 per cent. Under UK rules, any investor who hits the 29.99 per cent threshold will be obliged to launch a formal takeover bid and buy out the other shareholders.

Kroenke is yet to declare a takeover intent, but Usmanov has not hidden his interest in owning a majority stake in the club. Usmanov, who is into steel business, started investing in Arsenal three years ago through Red & White Holdings, after Dein, sold his 14.58 per cent stake to the Uzbek.
Arsenal stock currently trades for £10,000 (about N2.5 million) per share while the company’s overall market value is estimated at £606 million.

Apart from Dangote, Kroenke and Usmanov are also said to be interested in buying Bracewell-Smith’s share in what would be a mother of all fights to take full control of the club.
Kroenke is just a few shares away from hitting the threshold and is said to enjoy the trust of other members of the board who had initially resisted his interest until Usmanov showed up. In a twist, board members are now friendly with him and antagonistic of Usmanov who, despite being the second largest shareholder in the club, has not been offered a seat on the board.

Dangote’s friend, Dein, acrimoniously left his Arsenal position in August 2007 to become chairman of Usmanov’s special purpose vehicle, Red & White, which was set up to bid for the controlling stake in Arsenal. Dein left as chairman of the outfit a year later, reportedly to improve relations between Usmanov and the Arsenal board.

Bracewell-Smith, the lady whose stake is up for sale, is believed to want to do business quickly before the new UK government announces its emergency budget next month in which it is expected that capital gains tax will be significantly increased. If she does not sell by June 22, she could lose millions of pounds if she still goes ahead to sell under a new capital gains tax regime.

Dangote’s name is on the shortlist of Blackstone and is thought to stand a good chance of doing business. Forbes magazine ranked him among the world’s 500 richest people, with a fortune estimated at £1.7 billion, although this significantly excludes his non-listed asset. He is ranked the richest black African.Arsenal is expected to make a pre-tax profit of £56 million this year.

Kroenke, who owns the NBA's Denver Nuggets and Colorado Rapids MLS football team both in the US, was reported by Times of London yesterday as the favourite to buy Bracewell-Smith’s shares. This will increase his stake to over 45 per cent and automatically trigger the takeover clause.

Under UK rules, once a shareholder reaches a 30 per cent shareholding, he is deemed by the Takeover Panel to have "effective control" of the firm and must then make an offer for the remaining shares.
If, after the offer has been made, the “offerer” has more than 50 per cent of the shares they are deemed to have been successful in their takeover and legally in control.
If an offer is unsuccessful and the 50 per cent shareholding level is not breached then the “offerer” cannot come back with another takeover attempt for 12 months, unless invited to do so by the company.

Dear NL I really need a sincere and honest advice on this. I met this girl since 2005 when i was schooling in the east before leaving Nigeria to further my education. The very first day i met her i fell in love with her. but after sometimes she had problem with her studies and relocated. I later got her contact and started communicating but never mention my intention to her.

In 2007 i visited Nigeria and luckily met her in Abuja we linked up but still did not inform her intention towards her till i left Nigeria. Recently i visited Nigeria, and she came to see me, I then told her i want to marry her and unfortunately  its too late. We are both born again Christians and want to do the will of GOD.

She told me how she loves me and would like to spend the rest of her life with me, but also share with me how God revealed somebody to her and she said i should have told her earlier than this. I love this girl so much that i can't take my mind off her and also she does the same thing. She said may be the grace she is carrying is not meant for me and if we insist may not go well and I agreed with her. I am a Christian from far North west and she from South East. Pls don't turn this to trival thread i need a sincere counsel. thanks

Yar’Adua Arrives
From Paul Ibe and George Oji in Abuja, 02.24.2010

Exactly three months after he left Nigeria for medical treatment in Saudi Arabia, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, in a most dramatic twist, returned to the country in the early hours of today.

THISDAY learnt that the President, whose prolonged absence had generated considerable heat in the polity, left Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at 8.22pm Nigerian time last night and arrived at 1.46am today.

About 30 minutes to his arrival, the source of power supply to the airport was switched from public to generator.
After the first, small aircraft arrived, another one, a bigger aircraft, landed a few minutes later. Both were unusually parked on the runway - virtually in the bush - instead of the parking area, for a very long time. It was not clear which of the two aircraft carried the President as the entire area was covered in darkness.

An ambulance was seen moving towards the two aircraft shortly after the arrival of the second one. A bus also moved in a few minutes later.

At the airport to receive Yar'Adua were Governors Isa Yuguda (Bauchi), Ibrahim Shema (Katsina) and Namadi Sambo (Kaduna). They had earlier met with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon Dimeji Bankole, at his residence in Abuja.
Soldiers were deployed on the route from the airport to the Presidential Villa. They all took strategic positions, fully armed. The trucks that conveyed them bore the sign of Brigade of Guards.

THISDAY learnt that all the soldiers, who came in two companies, were asked to drop their phones, thereby rendering them incommunicado.

Airport staff were also ordered out of the presidential wing as soldiers took over the place. The only thing that could be gleaned from the aircraft was the flashing beacons.

At 2.56 am, the ambulance left while a convoy of about eight cars drove towards the aircraft. After 3am, the cars left the airport. They drove at moderate speed on the way to Aso Rock. There were about 16 cars in the convoy that headed for town.
The presidential jet eventually moved to park at its usual place at 3.20am while the unmarked smaller aircraft, presumed to be an air ambulance, also parked at 3.25am.

Yar'Adua returned to the country in company with his wife, Turai; his Chief Security Officer, Yusufu Tilde; and Aide-de-Camp, Col. Mustapha Onoedieva.

The President’s return came as a complete surprise as the public had no prior notice or indication to that effect. The six-man ministerial team set up by the Executive Council of the Federation (EXCOF) to pay him a visit only left for Saudi Arabia Monday night.

A source said yesterday that the ministers flew directly to Riyadh, the capital city of Saudi Arabia, and met with a representative of the King, Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, to “express deep appreciation for the excellent and generous attention the government and people of Saudi have given to the President”.

However, before the team could move to Jeddah – about one and a half hours by flight from Riyadh – the President had begun his journey back to Nigeria.

There were unconfirmed reports, however, that Yar’Adua flew in an air ambulance provided by the King of Saudi Arabia.
The presidential jet that flew him out of the country on November 23, 2009, was still at the Jeddah International Airport after he left, but it was believed to have taken off shortly after.

The air ambulance had been on standby for the past five days to bring the President back, THISDAY learnt, and airport authorities in Nigeria had been put on alert in the last two days to prepare for his return.

Members of the ministerial team, namely the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Alhaji Yayale Ahmed; Minister of Health, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin; Minister of Petroleum Resources, Dr. Rilwanu Lukman; Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Adetokunbo Kayode (SAN); Agriculture Minister, Dr. Abba Ruma; and Foreign Affairs Minister, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, are expected to return to Nigeria this morning straight from Riyadh.

Nigeria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Mr. Abdullah Garba Aminchi, had said on Monday that doctors were preventing visitors from having access to Yar’Adua.

Aminchi said he himself had visited Yar'Adua on Saturday and that the condition of the president was improving after treatment for a heart ailment.
"I saw him the day before yesterday, He's really feeling better now," Aminchi had told AFP.

PoliticsNigeria Becoming 'worthless, Irrelevant To Us -ex-american Envoys by silami(op): 8:58pm On Dec 14, 2009
Nigeria has become the butt of comedians and jokes and drama shows. -- Carrignton
From Laolu Akande, New York

Three former American Ambassadors to Nigeria abandoned diplomatese and attempted calling a spade a spade regarding Nigeria's current global status, and their conclusions are not flattering at all: Nigeria's so called strategic importance to the US can no longer be taken for granted.

Speaking one after the other at the Achebe Colloquium on Nigerian elections held all day Friday at Brown University, Providence, a US ivy school, Ambassadors Princeton Lyman, Walter Carrington and John Campbell in different words, clearly warning that Nigeria's glorious days in global estimation and the feeling of its invulnerability is now being progressively diminished.

Intervening, The Guardian's Managing Director, Mr. Emeka Izeze, who also spoke at the all-day forum, proposed that in order to secure better US-Nigeria relationship, the Americans should change their priority concern on Nigeria from trade and economic and peace and security matters to building democracy and good governance.

However, Special Adviser to the Assistant Secretary of State for Africa at the US State Department, Eric Silla noted that the US "is not about to turn its back on Nigeria." Silla is the official representative of the US government at the Colloquium.

Other eminent Nigerians at the Colloquium specially focusing on next year's Anambra election and the 2011 general elections are Prof. Chinua Achebe, the convener, Prof. Wole Soyinka, the 1986 Nobel laureate for Literature, Dim Emeka Ojukwu, APGA leader, Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, Nigeria's Consul General at the New York Consulate, Ibrahim Auwalu and several others.

Speaking on the topic the Nigerian State and US Strategic Interests, former US Ambassador and currently leading member of the US influential think tank, Council for Foreign Relations, Lyman deconstructed the feeling of Nigeria's invulnerability, arguing that the country's so-called strategic importance to the US is no longer as tenable as it used to be.

He warned that Nigeria clearly runs the risk of losing its importance to the US if the country continues its declining fortunes in global perceptions. He asked "is Nigeria really playing a major role today in Africa or elsewhere?

Regarding the strength of the country's population, Lyman said "power comes not just from the population, but in harnessing the resources and potential" of the country.

According to him, new oil discoveries elsewhere in Africa and new energy policies will make the US less dependent on Nigeria's oil and oil generally. He even expressed concern that instead of a steady economic growth, economically Nigeria is witnessing what he called "de-industrialization" as factories are closing, but import increasing.

Warning of the possibility of collapse of the country itself, Lyman stated that Nigeria can steadily become worthless and irrelevant to the US, stressing that this was the message being conveyed when US President Barack Obama visited Ghana instead of Nigeria earlier this year.

In his own contribution on the same discussion, former US Ambassador Walter Carrington noted that the argument for Nigeria as an ally of the US has now been lessened in recent years.

He cited the example of the expansion of the G8 into G20 without Nigeria, adding that instead Nigeria has become the butt of comedians and jokes and drama shows.

According to him, Nigeria stood the risk of becoming a security concern to the US in a way that may not be in the interest of the country, listing the Niger Delta as a possible terrain for such a development.

Besides, Carrington said "something has to be done dramatically in Nigeria to address the corruption issue." He called for reforms in the political system so that "politics does not become the preserve of members of Any Government in Power, AGIP," saying one way to do this is for the convocation of a National Dialogue in Nigeria.

Speaking on the same panel with the two envoys, Mr. Izeze noted that Nigeria may indeed be failing now, but "it has not always been like that."

According to him, "Nigeria's affairs need to be put together in order for West Africa to function properly," insisting that the fact that there is a global interest in Nigeria as evidenced by the turnout at the Achebe Colloquium.

He said US interests had always been ordered with trade and economic matters on top of the list followed by peace and security matters, before democracy and good governance. But he said clearly this is not working, and called for a reordering of the US priorities by putting democracy and good governance first.

Once that is done, he stated that both economic and security concerns will fall into place. Besides, Emeka Izeze said the significance of the Nigerians in Diaspora has not been factored into US-Nigerian relationship, stressing that the US-based Nigerians actually constitute "a powerful lobby in the US and ought to be seen as contributing to Us development.

In addition, Izeze called on the US government to give Nigeria the kind of attention and focus it is giving countries like India and Pakistan instead of merely treating Nigeria only within the context of Africa.

In a similar vein with his other colleagues, the most recent former Ambassador to Nigeria at the event, Mr. John Campbell who spoke on the topic Monitoring Nigerian Elections, regretted that it was already too late for Nigeria to implement any fundamental change for the 2011 elections, "but not too late to reverse the downward spiral of the 2003 and 2007 elections."

He disclosed that the US government actually did not congratulate President Umaru Yaradua during his election in 2007 because of the problems with that election, except that once the Nigerian people recognized him as the head of government the US was also left with no choice than to "recognize him as Chief of State."

Campbell insisted that a free and fair election can only be achieved in Nigeria, first by Nigerians and not by a foreign government, which can only support the Nigerian effort.
