Islamist insurgents killed at least 25 soldiers and a number of civilians in an ambush in northeast Nigeria on Saturday morning, two security sources said, the second deadly attack on the army this week. Militants opened fire as the soldiers were escorting a groups of evacuees from a village in Borno state, where Boko Haram and other militants have been fighting for a decade. “They ambushed and surrounded the vehicles of both the soldiers and the civilians and opened fire on them,” said one of the sources, part of a vigilante group that fights alongside the military against the insurgencies. “They exchanged fire for some minutes before the Boko Haram militants overpowered the soldiers.” Nigeria’s government has said the Boko Haram insurgency and the rival Islamic State West Africa Province group are on their last legs. But sustained efforts to eradicate the militants have failed and the military continues to suffer heavy losses. The war has killed more than 30,000 people and displaced millions more. The soldiers were evacuating villages in the region on Saturday to carry out operations against Boko Haram, the sources said. One said the civilian convoy had as many as 50 vehicles. Nigerian military spokesmen did not respond to requests for comment. On Wednesday, Islamic State’s West Africa branch claimed responsibility for a raid in Nigeria in which it said 20 soldiers had been killed, and released a video purporting to show the execution of nine other Nigerian soldiers. https://eyewitness101.com/2019/05/25/boko-haram-kills-25-soldiers-civilians-in-an-ambush-in-borno/

Daily Post Nigeria Members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the House of Representatives have reacted to the Supreme Court’s ruling, which nulified the victory of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Zamfara State. While the court nullified the APC victory on Friday, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC declared the PDP winner of the March elections. In a statement sent to DAILY POST on Saturday by the House Minority Leader, Hon Leo Ogor, the PDP Reps congratulated the entire people of Zamfara State. The statement added, “Members of the PDP House Caucus heartily felicitate with the entire good people of Zamfara State whose genuine love for democracy and the truth has manifested in the eventual victory of former member of the House of Representatives, Hon Bello Mutawalle as Governor-Elect of Zamfara state. “Your Excellency, Governor-Elect Mutawalle, we join all other Nigerians in praying for peace to prevail in your state where very clueless governance, deliberate tactlessness and insensitivity of the past four years has crudely and so dangerously endangered peace and order. “Indeed, it is sad to recall the autocratic tendencies and barefaced electoral manipulations undertaken by the APC during the last elections but we feel consoled by the Nigerian judiciary’s boldness in discharging its responsibilities on the issue of barefaced anti-democratic practices flagrantly perpetrated in Zamfara state. “Yari ‘magic’ was such that all the state’s three senatorial constituencies, 7 House of Representatives seats and the entire 24 state House of Assembly positions were buccaneered into a very total but unscrupulously-contrived APC victory. “Like millions of Nigerians who never expected such manipulations that have short-circuited the people’s will, we anxiously wait to see a bold interpretation of the law and the truth in other electoral petitions that are now before the courts across Nigeria; PDP is sure of winning more seats. “We have no doubt that in places where men of honour sit to adjudicate on such matters that command the attention of all Nigerian citizens, the people and the People’s Democratic Party will most likely remain winners and indeed, we expect more victories for the PDP as other stolen mandates get returned to rightful owners. “As the world’s great religions have always said, truth and the will of the Almighty Creator will eventually prevail – just as we have just seen in Zamfara. Once again, we congratulate Governor-Elect Mutawalle, newly-elected members of the Zamfara state House of Assembly and the entire state and federal legislators from Zamfara state who are coming to swell our ranks at the National Assembly. “We also congratulate the Presidency for having the courage to accept the unchangeable verdict of God |

Lionel Messi has won the European Golden Shoe for a sixth time after Kylian Mbappe failed to hunt him down on Friday night. The Paris Saint-Germain striker had one game to catch Messi but he was always likely to come up short given he needed four goals to move level and five to usurp the Barcelona star. In the end, Mbappe scored one to take his tally to 33 as PSG lost 2-1 to Stade Reims, leaving Messi to win the award for the third successive year with 36 goals. Messi's first Golden Shoe arrived in 2010 when Pep Guardiola was on the bench. He scored 34 goals. In 2012 he won it again, this time with a staggering 50 goals. Messi still had more to give and in 2013 when the award with 46 goals in the only season he played under Tito Vilanova, despite some injury problems. Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suarez shared the prize out between 2014 and 2016, but Messi has returned with a bang to win it in 2017, 2018 and now 2019. In Luis Enrique's final season he reached 37 goals, last season he won it with 34 strikes and this year he beats Mbappe with 36 goals. Congratulations To Leo Messi For Winning The 2018/2019 Golden Shoe !!! Ronaldo after seeing Messi win his 6th Golden Shoe : Oh God I must work hard next season for my own Golden shoe. Messi is the first player in football to win the award 6 times. 3 by 3.

Barcelona captain Lionel Messi spoke in public for the first time since the Blaugrana's embarrassing collapse against Liverpool in the Champions League, noting the difficulties the squad have had in mentally recovering from the match since. On Saturday, Barcelona will face Valencia in the Copa del Rey at the Estadio Benito Villamarin and, should they win, it will secure back-to-back domestic doubles for coach Ernesto Valverde, yet his future remains up in the air. Nevertheless, the Liverpool defeat dominated the press conference. "[The Liverpool game] was a really hard blow that we received; for me and the rest of the players," said Messi. "It was hard to get back up. It was a really hard blow. "We played a terrible game. It can happen one year but to happen two years in a row [having lost a three-goal lead in the quarter-finals to Roma in 2017/18].... to have the chance to be in a Champions League final, it's impermissible. "The game against Liverpool was different from losing the World Cup final [with Argentina against Germany in 2014]. But having an advantage of three goals and still losing is unexpected and very tough." Prior to the season commencing, Messi's first as the main captain, he had said that the goal for this campaign would be to 'bring that beautiful and desired cup' back to the Camp Nou, yet the Argentine touched on that statement in the press conference. "I didn't promise to bring 'that beautiful and desired cup' back, I promised to do everything to try and bring it back," affirmed Messi. "But we didn't do that, so we should say sorry for that because we didn't even compete in the second leg." The 31-year-old firmly stood behind Valverde with his comments, stating his support for the coach on multiple occasions. ""I would like Valverde to continue next year, we won a double last year and we can repeat that this year," said Messi. "The coach has done impressive work. All the time he's been here, he's not to blame for the Liverpool elimination, we are the ones to blame." Messi was asked about the prospect of Antoine Griezmann arriving at the Camp Nou, too. After declaring that he likes the Frenchman and is one of the best around last summer, he was very coy on the subject this time around. "I won't give my opinion," he stated.
