London – The Archbishop of Canterbury, Archbishop Justin Welby on Sunday in London condemned the attack on the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, describing it as “disgraceful” and “atrocious”. Welby said this when he paid a sympathy visit to the royal father, who was flown to London following the attack in Kano by unknown gunmen. The gunmen attacked the emir’s convoy along Zoo road, near Sahad Stores, last month, killing his driver, his orderly and a traditional guard who tried to protect him. The emir’s two sons who were also in his convoy, were injured. “I am here to bring my condolences on the disgraceful and atrocious attack on His Royal Highness. And on the loss of some of his staff, which is something that is a great shame and I rejoice that His Royal Highness himself was unharmed in the attack. ” I pray for you and all those in Nigeria who carry out the work of peace, reconciliation and seek to bring Nigeria to the place where it is supposed to be in strength and prosperity against the terrorists,” Welby said. Responding, Bayero expressed has appreciation for the visit and congratulated Welby on his appointment. The emir, who spoke in Hausa through the Chiroman Kano, Alhaji Sanusi Bayero, commended the role of the Anglican Communion in promoting peace and unity in Nigeria. The Archbishop was received by the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingom, Dr Dalhatu Tafida, and the Turakin Kano, Alhaji Nasir Bayero. ABAKALIKI — UNIDENTIFIED persons, weekend, kidnapped a three-year-old boy, Ejike Emmanuel, at Akaeze in Ivo Local Government Area of the state. Vanguard gathered that the boy was abducted in front of his parent’s compound at Obulo-Iyioji village in Akaeze by two suspected kidnappers, a man and woman, who disguised as customers to the mother of the victim, Mrs Nnennaya Emmanuel. Narrating her ordeal, Mrs Emmanuel said: “I was closing my akara (bean cake) business for the day and dropped Ejike with his four-year-old sister, Nkiruka, and crossed over to the other side of the road to keep the bench I used for the business. “When I came back, my son was nowhere to be found. I only saw Nkiruka crying and pointing her finger at some people on a motorcycle.” In his account, the father, Mr Anyim Emmanuel, expressed disbelief that his child could ever be kidnapped on such an ever busy road and called on security agencies to help secure the release of his son. It was, however, learnt that the parents of the victim raised alarm which attracted some villagers who quickly organised a search party to locate the boy’s whereabouts but all efforts proved abortive as the kidnappers had disappeared. Police rescue two kidnapped children In a related development, two of the eight children kidnapped between December last year and early January at Ishiagu in the same local government have been found. Police sources noted that the two children were rescued in Owerri, ImoState, with the aid of members of the Criminal Investigation Department of Imo State Police Command, adding that they were found in the custody of a woman who allegedly bought them from the kidnappers for N600, 000. According to the source, the woman, whose name could not be immediately ascertained, was said to have paid N450,000 for the male child, while the female child was sold to her for N150,000. Meanwhile, Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officers, DSP Sylvester Igbo, who confirmed both incidents, said he was waiting for a formal report from the Divisional Police Officers in charge of the Ivo LGA before briefing journalists. When they appointed him I told Nigerians to support him. As a player, Keshi had leadership abilities. And when I was leaving Nigeria, I told him to get ready to take over. BY GBENGA OKE Eminent Nigerians, led by Professor Ben Nwabueze, under the auspices of Project Nigeria, Saturday, in Lagos, called for a National Conference before 2015 elections, saying failure to do so may cause disaster, anarchy and spell doom for Nigeria. The group also said Nigeria may become a failed state if good governance and accountability did not take root soonest. According to Nwabueze, for Nigeria to move forward, there is absolute need for good governance, justice, equal treatment of citizens of various ethnic groups, observation of rule of law, transparency and accountability, free and fair elections. His words, “Our meeting here today is to affirm our commitment to one Nigeria and indivisibility among ethnic groups. We believe from now to generations to come, this country should remain one nation but government must convene a national conference with immediate effect to discuss national issues that affects each ethnic groups in Nigeria. ”There is need to prepare the peoples constitution which will enable people of Nigeria of every ethnic groups, civil societies to deliberate and agree on the conditions they intend to live together” He went further, “The peoples constitution will comprise of Justice, peace, development, progress for all Nigerians that will also promote nation building”. The elder statesman called on civil societies to press the National Assembly and the Presidency to immediately convene the National Conference. ”There is need for various movements, groups and organisations to press the National Assembly and the Presidency to quickly convene a conference where the groups will meet with the President and National Assembly to submit a memorandum which will be accompanied by a draft bill that will cover all aspects of the constitution”. Telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria Limited, is facing threat of demolition of its installations in the Niger Delta region over an alleged indebtedness to one of its major contractors, Procomtel Limited, that handled the construction/installations of its facilities in the region. The threat is coming from Gbaruka Resources, a service provider company based in Bayelsa State, which is a sub- contractor to Procomtel Limited, that handled the installation services on behalf of the MTN contractor. In an official correspondence addressed to the Managing Director of MTN Nigeria Limited signed by Comrade Charles Taylor, Managing Director of Gbaruka Resources, the company claimed that having made fruitless efforts to get paid for its labour by Procomtel Limited, due to alleged refusal by MTN to settle the latter, it was left with no choice than to return to the trenches. The Gbaruka Resources group said it had resolved that failure by MTN Nigeria Limited to settle with Procomtel Limited on or before February 15, 2013 will see them commence the demolition of all MTN installations in Rivers State by third week in February 2013, those in Bayelsa and Delta states by the end of fourth week of February 2013, and the demolition exercise in other states of the Niger Delta region in the month of March 2013. The open letter, titled “One more River to Cross” was made available to the media, and also copied to the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, JTF commander in the Niger Delta, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and the Director General State Security Service, SSS. |

By Ikechukwu Nnochiri ABUJA—A Federal High Court in Abuja, Wednesday, slated February 11 to determine whether six alleged kingpins of the Boko Haram sect in Niger State, have a case to answer regarding the explosion that rocked the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Suleja, prior to the April 16, 2011, presidential election. The suspects include Shuaibu Abubakar, Salisu Ahmed, Umar Babagana-Umar, Mohammed Ali, Musa Adam and Umar Ibrahim. Justice Bilkisu Aliyu adjourned the matter for ruling after all the parties adopted their written addresses yesterday. The accused persons, who were apprehended while on their way to Kaduna State to attack the venue of an event attended by Vice President Namadi Sambo in Kaduna on July 28, 2011, had in a motion filed through their lawyers Mr. Kelvin Okoro and Mr Nureni Sulaiman, challenged the powers of the federal government to prosecute them. It was their contention that the federal government failed to establish a nexus between them and the charge, insisting that the sum total of the evidence tendered against them amounted to ‘hearsay’ which they said “is not admissible in law.” Consequently, the accused persons filed a consolidated motion wherein they made a ‘no-case-submission’. Basically, a no-case- submission is made when an accused person believes that the prosecution has failed to prove the ingredients of the offence for which he is charged or that the evidence adduced in court was such that a judge cannot rely upon to pass a sentence. Meanwhile, the States Security Service, SSS, which recommended their trial, had maintained that its investigations revealed that it was the accused persons that masterminded various terrorist attacks that killed 28 persons between March and July, 2011. The prosecution had alleged that six of them , “between June 4 and July 12, (both dates inclusive) at various locations in Suleja, Niger state, Azare, Nasarawa state and the FCT, did engage in an act of terrorism by encouraging through training persons now at large, the use of arms and ammunition, and the preparation, planting and detonation of improvised explosive devices for the purpose of terrorism and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15 (2) of EFCC Act 2004 and punishable under the same section of the Act.” They were said to have supervised the bombing of a village, Dakna, in Bwari, Abuja, on May 23; an incident SSS said resulted in the death of three Peace Officers, as well as detonated an improvised explosive device at a political rally in Suleja which resulted in the death of three persons too. However, though they had on September 30, 2011, pleaded not guilty to a 5- count charge that was preferred against them by the Federal Government, they have since remained at Kuje prisons from where they attend their trial. If convicted, the offence for which the accused persons are answering to attracts a punishment of life imprisonment. It will be recalled that a senior Army officer who led the team of soldiers that caught the suspects at Gummel Junction at Kachia Kaduna on July 27, 2011, had in his evidence-in-chief, told the trial court that a text message found in the inbox of a mobile handset confiscated from one of the suspects, revealed that each of the accused persons were promised an inheritance of 72 virgins in paradise assuming they succeeded in bombing the event that was attended by the Vice President and some Northern Governors. Likewise, the high court had on December 20, 2012, admitted into evidence, 250 different explosive making devices that were allegedly recovered from the accused persons. A representative of the Nigerian Army, whose identity was masked by the federal government owing to the sensitive nature of the case, while tendering the evidence in court, warned that “the dangerous components of Improvised Explosive Device, IED, we caught them with, if you prime them, it can in matter of seconds bring down the whole of this high court building.” Consequently trial justice Bilkisu Aliyu declined to take custody of the evidence comprising IEDs and bundles of connector wires, even as she granted the SSS leave to take them away for safe keeping pending when it would be needed for examination by the court. Besides, the court had equally admitted into evidence, a black Honda Civic with registration number AG-94-NMG, in which three of the suspects were arrested, even as the suspects conceded before the court that the car actually belonged to them. |

Now, a confidant of Atiku Abubakar, is claiming that the former vice-president and his one time number one foe, Olusegun Obasanjo are now the best of friends. Chief Ernest Irek a former member of the House of Representatives and one time coordinator of Atiku’s presidential campaign in Cross River State, is debunking allegations of dissimulation and secret animosity between Obasanjo and Atiku. Atiku and Obasanjo Atiku and Obasanjo Chief Irek in a telephone interview with Vanguard following a meeting with some of the former vice president’s associates in Calabar reiterated the determination of Atiku’s undying followers to realize their long but often imperiled dream of enthroning their man in the presidency. He said that the impression in some quarters that there was acrimony between Atiku and Obasanjo was wrong, claiming that the two leaders had resolved any form of misunderstanding they may have had while in office. “They have been talking to themselves, they have been visiting themselves. Chief Obasanjo has not openly declared his support to Atiku, we know his support is paramount, but for now he does not have any problem with him. “There was the time Atiku visited him in his Otta farm that was the beginning of the peace meeting and Atiku said this man was my boss, my elder brother, I respect him. In African culture once someone gives you that respect, you are bound to resiprocate, I don’t think he has any problem with Atiku for now,” he said. Commenting on the outcome of the Southern Nigeria’s Peoples Assembly held recently in Enugu, Irek advised that Nigerians should always bring equity and justice to play in whatever they do. Irek explained that in one of the meetings held in Warri, Delta State, a prominent politician and an elder statesman from the area had canvassed support for President Goodluck Jonathan, but the Enugu meeting was for the stakeholders to chart a way forward as the 2015 was fast approaching. The former coordinator said it would be unfair to deny the North the right to take their turn, citing the case of 1999 when the presidential field was left for only southern candidates but wondered why the South should usurp the turn of the North because former President Umaru Yar’Adua died. |

Asaba—A young man, one Emmanuel Michael was Tuesday, sentenced to five years imprisonment with hard labour by a Chief Magistrate Court in Asaba, Delta State, for stealing gold earrings worth N25,000. Presiding Chief Magistrate, Sylvester Ehikwe, in sentencing him stated that “he does not deserve mercy as burglary is next to armed robbery.” Upon arraignment, the convict immediately pleaded guilty to the two-count charge preferred against him and began to weep in the dock, saying “I was hungry.” The prosecution stated that the accused “on the February 1, 2013 at back of NTA Asaba in the Asaba Magisterial District did break into the house of one Okechukwu Uheghbu and stole a pair of gold earrings and its pendant valued at N25,000, property of Mr. and Mrs. Okechukwu Uheghbu and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 411(1) of the Criminal Code Cap C21 Vol. 1 Law of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/02/man-jailed-5yrs-for-stealing-gold-earrings/ |
