Tears flowed freely, on
Friday, when a family of four
popularly called ‘the Bellos’,
was involved in an auto
crash which claimed their
lives on the spot.
The tragedy involved one
Alhaji Bello, his daughter in-
law and her parents. One of
Bello’s tenants was also a
victim. The crash occurred at
Agbowa-Ikosi area of Lagos
State around 12noon.
According to eye witnesses,
the family was travelling in
two cars: Alhaji Bello and the
victims in one; the widow
and their five-month old
grandson in the other. They
left their Bayeku, Ikorodu
residence for the graduation
of their daughter at Federal
Polytechnic, Ilaro, Ogun State,
and decided to bye-pass
Sagamu Road for Agbowa
due to the bad condition of
the road.
An eye witness, Madam
Kehinde Olufade, said the
family had had a smooth
journey until they got to a
crater at Ikosi where
motorists had to maintain a
slow speed. Due to the
dilapidated nature of the
road, a trailer, according to
the eye witness, was facing
the car driven by Alhaji Bello
which he tried to avoid not
knowing that a tipper
behind him was also trying
to overtake him. The Bellos
car was said to have landed
in a ditch. ‘’As soon as the car
entered the ditch, the tipper
also lost control and fell into
the ditch, killing the victims
instantly,”the eye witness
said.
Alhaji Bello was said to be
planning a trip abroad with
his wife which prompted her
to apply for a change of
name in Vanguard
newspaper of Friday. They
were yet to buy a copy of the
paper when the tragedy took
place.

AS Nigeria joins the rest of
the world to mark this year’s
World
Health Day, with the theme
“High Blood Pressure”, the
Pharmaceutical
Society of Nigeria, PSN, has
cautioned against
unrestrained
consumption of foods such
as noodles which are high in
salt content,
and drugs such as
paracetamol that contain
sodium, as a way of
effectively addressing risk
factors for raised blood
pressure or
hypertension.
Giving the warning in a
statement to mark the Day in
Lagos, President,
PSN, Pharm. Olumide
Akintayo said: “The risk of
developing high blood
pressure can be reduced by
reducing salt intake, eating a
balanced
diet, avoiding harmful use of
alcohol, taking regular
physical
activity, maintaining a
healthy body weight, and
avoiding tobacco
use.”
Akintayo observed that
reduction of hypertension in
the Nigerian
population can only be
effected through strong
public health policies
such as reduction of salt in
processed food and widely
available
diagnosis and treatment that
tackle hypertension and
other risk
factors together.
His words: “The
Pharmaceutical Society of
Nigeria, PSN, admonishes the
consuming public on dietary
patterns which is critical in
hypertension. Some popular
diets like some brands of
noodles account
for 61 percent of daily salt
requirement in the smallest
packs.
“Newly promoted brands of
soluble paracetamol with
about 450mg of
sodium per tablet which
transcends 2.7g daily when
six tabs are taken
a day will be inimical to the
health of hypertensives and
so call for
caution,” Akintayo said.
Calling for improved
awareness on the causes
and consequences of
hypertension in line with
goals of the World Health Day
2013, which is
“greater awareness, healthy
behaviours, improved
detection, and
enabling environments”, he
argued that the right
systems and services
should be in place to
promote universal health
coverage and support
healthy lifestyles within the
Nigerian populace.
“Access to good quality
medicines, which are
effective and
inexpensive, is also vital,
particularly at the primary
care level. As
with other non-
communicable diseases,
awareness aids early
detection
while self-care helps ensure
regular intake of medication,
healthy
behaviours and better
control of the condition.”
Akintayo noted that the high-
income countries have
begun to reduce
hypertension in their
populations through strong
public health
policies such as reduction of
salt in processed food and
widely
available diagnosis and
treatment that tackle
hypertension and other
risk factors together.
“Many can point to examples
of joint action – across
sectors – that is
effectively addressing risk
factors for raised blood
pressure. In
contrast, many developing
countries are seeing
growing numbers of
people who suffer from
heart attacks and strokes
due to undiagnosed
and uncontrolled risk factors
such as hypertension.
“The risk of developing these
complications is higher in
the presence
of other cardiovascular risk
factors such as diabetes.
However, high
blood pressure is both
preventable and treatable.
Doing so is far less
costly, and far safer for
patients, than interventions
like cardiac
bypass surgery and dialysis
that may be needed when
hypertension is
missed and goes untreated.
On the role of pharmacists in
hypertension, Akintayo noted
that as the
most accessible healthcare
professionals in a
community, pharmacists
can verify and improve the
patients’ knowledge about
necessary
lifestyle modifications and
use of medicines and
improve adherence to
therapy.
“Pharmaceutical care of
hypertensive patients by
pharmacists has been
demonstrated to significantly
improve adherence to
antihypertensive
therapy thereby improving
blood pressure control.”
Hypertension as a silent,
invisible killer that rarely
causes
symptoms, but increases the
risk of heart attacks, strokes,
kidney
failure and one which left
uncontrolled, can also cause
blindness,
irregularities of the
heartbeat and heart failure.
Blood pressure
measurement of
140/90mmHg and above is
regarded as high
blood pressure. Hypertension
already affects one billion
people
worldwide and kills nine
million people every year.
Prevalence is
highest in some low-income
countries in Africa, with over
40 percent
of adults in many African
countries thought to be
affected.
World Health Day is
celebrated April 7 each year
to mark the
anniversary of the founding
of World Health Organisation,
WHO, in
1948.

has died of cancer according to
family sources.
Funmilayo Olayinka has been
deputy governor since 16th
October 2010. She was also a
champion of women’s rights. She
came to the government from
the banking sector.
She leaves behind a husband and
three children.
She was 52 years old.

Party, PDP yesterday
described the constitution of
an Amnesty Committee on
the Boko Haram insurgency
by President Goodluck
Jonathan as the best
decision at the moment just
as the governors of Kastina
and Jigawa states, Ibrahim
Shema and Sule Lamido
yesterday said the decision
was in submission to the
yearnings of northern
leaders over the plight of the
people in the region that
should be commended.
In a statement signed by PDP
National Publicity Secretary,
Chief Olisa Metuh, the party
while hailing the President
for the action, stressed that it
was yet another
demonstration of his
sincerity and forthrightness
in handling the affairs of
Nigeria, adding that it
showed the President as a
listening leader and one who
has the unity of the country
as paramount to him.

‘’It is on record that the
north is the most receptive
region in the country. Indeed
there is no part of the
country that is more
accommodating than the
north which has always been
home for all people,
irrespective of religious

constituting an Amnesty

meeting with President
Jonathan, governors Lamido
and Shema said the decision
was a step in ensuring that
peace returns to the
northern part of the country.
According to the governor,
of Katsina state, “If a
committee on amnesty is set
up, it is done because
Nigerians and leaders from
the northern part of the
country are yearning for a
quick resolution to the
matter. And the president is
responding positively to this
request so that our nation
can go on in peace, progress
and development”.
He said it is not true that
northern governors did not
do enough to check the
activities of the sect noting
that the governors had set
up a committee on peace
and reconciliation before
now.
”If you remember, the
northern governors’ forum
did set up a special
committee for peace, healing
and reconciliation and that
committee has been working
very hard and is submitting
its second report to the
northern governors’ forum
and certainly all hands are on
deck including traditional
institutions, religious and
political leaders, even from
the services – military,
retired, the police, SSS are all
part of that committee”, he
added.
Shema noted that there “has
been very serious efforts by
the northern governors
forum to tackle this
insecurity in northern
Nigeria. I believe if a security
committee is set up is in
good faith, is for the good of
Nigeria and for the
resolution to the crisis that
has bedeviled most of
northern Nigeria on the
issue of insecurity.
”My advice is that there is no
nation that can progress
without peace and stability.
We need peace and all hands
be on deck, those who are
aggrieved for one reason or
the other should come
forward and be able to
resolve this crisis, such that
our nation and our people
can progress and develop
rapidly” he said.
On his part, the governor of
Jigawa state said the
president’s decision was in
response to the wish of the
people.
”What ever it is, he is there
for the people and the
people said this is what we
want and he has given it to
them so I commend him for
that. Whatever it is wisdom,
has prevailed. It is all about
what do we do to secure our
country especially when
Nigeria becomes a country
that is very secure and stable
so that we confront the
problems of human
development.
”This country needs our
energy, it needs our political
skills and a there are a
number of things which are
begging for attention.
Whatever it is to be able to
get Nigeria united, to make it
secure, we should do it. So
ignore what might have
been the other
misconceptions. We are now
doing the right thing” he
said.
Meanwhile, Anglican Youth
Fellowship, Nigeria,
yesterday, said that the
Federal government’s
decision to grant amnesty to
the Boko Haram sect was
nothing but to legalize
terrorism in the country.

Isaac Harrison stated this
while speaking to Saturday
Vanguard during a
workshop organised for the
youths with the theme;
“Empowered To Impact The
World”, in Abuja.
He said, “We cannot grant
amnesty to people we do not
know, we cannot also grant
amnesty to people who had
already made up their minds
that whether there is
dialogue or not they will go
on with whatever they are
doing, if Boko Haram actually
need peace they will not be
killing those that are moving
towards that peace.
“So, the Anglican Youths
Fellowship members are not
in support of the amnesty to
Boko Haram.
“If you grant amnesty to a
terrorist, you should
remember that some months
ago, US listed Nigeria as a
terrorist country, it was by
the grace of God that we
were able to release
ourselves from that situation,
so, if we grant amnesty to
Boko Haram, it will means
that Nigeria is a terrorist
country, so we are legalizing
terrorism.”

No fewer than 100 people
were killed in two separate
road accidents which
occurred in Okija, along
Owerri-Onisha Highway in
Anambra State and Ofosu,
the boundary town between
Edo and Ondo States
yesterday.
About 80 persons were
reportedly burnt to death in
the accident involving a
haulage truck, a petrol tanker
and the Young Shall Grow
double-decker bus at
Ugbogui Village, near Ofosu
at about 1.30pm just as 20
other passengers who were
travelling in two commercial
buses owned by the Rivers
State Transport Company,
RTC, reportedly died at Okija,
when another haulage truck
rammed onto them in the
early hours of the day.
Sources said that the
accident occurred as the
Young Shall Grow bus and
the haulage truck were
struggling over which vehicle
had the right of way and the
petrol tanker which was fully
loaded with petrol rammed
into the two vehicles and
burst into a huge ball of
flame. The victims were
burnt beyond recognition
even as the accident led to
traffic gridlock that lasted for
over three hours.
An official of the Federal
Road Safety Commission,
FRSC, who spoke on
condition of anonymity
confirmed the incident at
press time saying that only
three of the passengers
were rescued from the fully
loaded luxury bus pointing
out that the mangled bodies
of the victims littered the
scene.

According to the eye witness,
the victims of the Ore- Benin
accident included drivers of
the vehicles and their
conductors (motor-boys) and
53 passengers in the Luxury
bus.
Another source at the scene
however said that the
multiple accident occurred
when the haulage vehicle
which had a flat tyre rammed
into the tanker which also
swerved and rammed onto
the double-decker Luxury
bus, causing the petrol
tanker to explode and burst
into flame that consumed all
those around the area.
FRSC confirmed 36 dead in
Ore-Benin road crash
Also preliminary reports from
the FRSC stated that 36
persons dead in the Ore-
Benin road crash and that
the accident occurred when
a tyre from the Dangote
truck suddenly pulled out
and rammed into the tanker
which caught fire
immediately.
The Luxury bus which was
on speed, lost control and
ran into the blazing fire,
consuming its occupants.
However, an FRSC team was
on hand to rescue 3
passengers while 30 others
died from the Luxury bus.
The Tanker driver with his
conductor, in addition to the
Truck driver and his
conductor were also
confirmed dead. Two
children were also consumed
by the fire which spread to a
nearby mechanic workshop,
burning 8 additional vehicles
resulting to a heavy traffic
gridlock.
Meanwhile, a detachment of
the FRSC, Police and the
Construction Company were
at the scene for intensive
traffic control and diversion
of route to ensure seamless
traffic flow along the
corridor.
The Corps advises road users
on Benin road to take Oluku
junction – Ifon-Owo-Akure
road to Lagos while vehicles
from Lagos are advised to
take Akure – Owo road .
The FRSC also contacted the
Young Shall Grow transport
company and has a scanned
copy of its manifest which
confirms that 30 persons
boarded the bus earlier in
the day from the Jibowu
terminus to Enugu.
Disturbed by the recent spate
of road crash fatalities linked
to speeding and reckless
driving, the Federal Road
Safety Corps has decided to
evoke its statutory powers to
institute legal actions against
drivers and transport
operators whose vehicles are
responsible for such crashes.
Part of this arrangement
includes the Corps’ resolve to
assist victims and relations of
road crash victims to seek
compensation from such
fleet operators.
At Okija in Anambra State, an
eye witness told Saturday
Vanguard that a trailer had
rammed onto the oncoming
vehicles, including two buses
belonging to the RTC, killing
most of the occupants of the
two buses instantly.
The accident caused an
excruciating traffic jam on
both lanes. For several hours,
commuters were at stand
still as movement was
virtually impossible.
However, there was a little
respite on the expressway
after about two hours as
vehicles coming from the
Onitsha end had to divert at
Okija junction, while those
coming from the Owerri end
diverted at Ezego junction at
Ihiala.
Mangled bodies of the
victims were scattered along
the road, while those
wounded were taken to
nearby hospitals for
treatment.
Men of the Federal Road
Safety Corps, FRSC, and the
police, as well as other
volunteers were at the scene
of the accident clearing the
blocked road.
It was not clear what caused
the accident, but an eye
witness said that the trailer
driver might have lost control
on the sloppy road and
subsequently rammed onto
other vehiles.

NIGERIAN OIL MILITANT JAILED FOR
24 YEARS
A South African court has
sentenced Nigerian oil militant
Henry Okah to an effective 24 years
in jail.
He was found guilty of 13
terrorism-related charges over
twin car bombings during
Nigeria's independence day
celebrations in 2010.
At least 12 people were killed and
36 others injured.
Okah led a group which said it was
fighting to help Niger Delta
residents gain a greater share of
the oil wealth from their part of
southern Nigeria.
The court established that Okah
was the former leader of the
Movement for the Emancipation of
the Niger Delta, Mend.
He also received a 13-year jail term
for threats made to the South
African government after his arrest
in October 2010 but this runs
concurrently with his 24-year
sentence.
The judge found that the state had
proven Okah's guilt beyond a
reasonable doubt because he
didn't testify in his own defence
during the trial.
He had repeatedly denied any
involvement in the bombings.
Prosecutors have argued that
although Okah is not a South Africa
citizen, the country had the
jurisdiction to try him under the
International Co-operation in
Criminal Matters Act.
Okah was arrested on gun-
running charges in Angola in 2007
and then transferred to Nigeria but
never convicted.
He was released after two years
under an amnesty for oil militants
and he returned to South Africa,
where he had lived since 2003.
While Mend and other militant
groups say they were fighting for
a political cause, criminal gangs
have taken advantage of the
region's instability to make money
from ransoms paid by oil
companies, and by stealing oil.
The violence subsided significantly
after the government offered
militants an amnesty in 2009.
At its peak, the instability in the
Niger Delta cost Nigeria about $
1bn (£630m) in lost revenue,
Reuters news agency quotes the
central bank as saying.
Nigeria is Africa's biggest oil
producer, but most of its people
live in poverty.
