Day 10: The science of craving There are times when it seems like the craving for pornography can be overwhelming. Over the past few days, you learned there is a neurological reason for this. Watching pornography lays down new neuro-pathways in our brains. The more pornography a person looks at, the more severe the damage to their brain becomes and the more difficult it is to break free. However, damage to the brain can be undone when someone gets away from unhealthy behaviors. To bring the prefrontal lobes back into working order, a two-pronged attack is needed: (1) starve the old neural pathways, and (2) build and feed ones, increasing dopamine levels in a way that build up the prefrontal cortex. 1. Starve: Stop All Pornography and Fantasy Don’t give into the urge to look at porn. As your brain is given plenty of time to rest, your willpower will be strengthened over time. Here are some helpful tips for starving porn cravings: Redirection – When you feel the urge, get into the habit of distracting yourself with another activity that you can start immediately.Identify and Avoid Triggers – Sometimes these are external, like a certain channel on TV. Sometimes they’re emotions (loneliness, anger, etc.) Completely avoid triggers when possible, and create an escape plan for them when unavoidable.Avoid Seemingly Unimportant Decisions – These rationalizations get you one step closer to porn. “I’m just going to see what’s on TV.” “I’m just going to get on Facebook.” Be ruthless against these rationalizations.Avoid Inactivity – Fill up your social calendar to the brim. Refuse to give yourself an open window.Destroy Fantasies – As a fantasy or thought enters your mind, picture the image being eliminated. Draw a red X over it. Smash it with a hammer. 2. Feed: Build Up Your Brain Much like a muscle, the more you exercise the prefrontal cortex, the stronger it becomes. The goal is to engage in new habits that will increase your dopamine and dopamine receptors. Meditation – Making a habit of meditation has been shown to increase dopamine release up to 65%. Even after only 11 hours of meditation spread over a month, changes are observable.Exercise – Aerobic exercise has been shown to increase dopamine receptors and decrease cravings for those bound in addiction.Socializing – Porn is an anti-social habit. By spending quality time with real people, you will establish new neural pathways of pleasure. |

Day 9: What the porn-addicted brain looks like Today we will continue to look at the negative impact of porn on the brain. As we saw yesterday, porn can be “addictive,” can’t it? Evidence from the field of neuroscience shows us this. Porn addiction is a behavior addiction, and knowing this can provide us a powerful motivation to avoid porn at all costs. Notice Paul’s use of the word “members” (that is, the physical members of his body) in Romans 7:22-23. When we are hooked on pornography, deep in our hearts we may desire to please God, but rooted in the physical members of our body (including our brains) we have ingrained sinful habits. The good news is that change is possible. Only a few verses later Paul writes that the Holy Spirit dwells in us giving life to our mortal bodies (Romans 8:11), and by the power of the Holy Spirit we can “put to death the deeds of the body” (Romans 8:13). Given time, God can and will change our habits and heal our minds. Action Step Watch “Is Porn Addictive?” As you watch, remember Paul’s words in Romans 7 and 8. Though porn is addictive (like a lot of things can be), we can take courage in knowing God is bigger than our addictions. Reflection Porn addiction is a behavioral addiction. Knowing this should motivate us to avoid porn at all costs. You avoid drugs because they are damaging and addictive, right? We should treat porn the same way. Remember, it’s possible for you to renew your mind and make great changes. In what way does today’s devotional help to make sense of your own experience? People affected with stroke often show some form of mental / psychological disorder ranging from mild to severe. I noticed it too in my dad before I lost him. Sometimes he would get paranoid or aggressive for the slightest of reasons, and this was not his former behavior. Sometimes he would say some very hurtful words to us then out of nowhere. OP, you should be more sensitive to your dad now. He is going through a difficult phase in his life right now and he might not be the best dad in the whole world right now, but you need to be considerate and caring too. You are now your father's dad. 1 Like |

Day 8: Blame it on the brain: The neurology of addiction How does porn use impact our bodies and brains? It shouldn't surprise us that pornography might have a negative impact on us physiologically. Dr. William Struthers teaches that viewing pornography and masturbating actually weakens the region of our brain known as the cingulate cortex, which is responsible for moral and ethical decision-making and willpower. When having sex or watching porn, dopamine is released into a region of the brain responsible for emotion and learning, giving the viewer a sense of sharp focus and a sense of craving: “I need this thing, and I need it now.” It supplies a great sense of pleasure. The next time the viewer gets the “itch” for more sexual pleasure, small packets of dopamine are released in the brain telling the user: “Remember where you got your fix last time. Go there to get it.” Norepinephrine is also released, creating alertness and focus. It is the brain’s version of adrenaline. It tells the brain, “Something is about to happen, and we need to get ready for it.” Sex or porn also trigger the release of oxytocin andvasopressin. These hormones “bind” a person’s memories to the object that gave him or her the sexual pleasure. The body releases endorphins, natural opiates that create a “high,” a wave of pleasure over the whole body. After sexual release, serotonin levels also change, bringing a sense of calm and relaxation. This system works the way it is supposed to work when you’re having sex with your spouse. Together you can experience a high, an alertness of sexual pleasure, and the deep calm afterwards (norepinephrine, endorphins, and serotonin). With each sexual embrace, when the two become one flesh (Matthew 19:5), you are emotionally bonding to this person (oxytocin and vasopressin). Over time a craving for sex is transformed into a desire for one another (dopamine). But porn short-circuits the system. Paul wrote that the sexually immoral person sins “against his own body” (1 Corinthians 6:18). This is one of the great negative motivators for fleeing from porn: we avoid porn knowing the damage it can do to us and others. Action Step Download the book, The Porn Circuit. In it you’ll learn how we are wired sexually and how pornography hijacks our natural drives and warps them. 1 Like |

Day 7: Radical amputation: What do you need to cut? Today we are talking about getting radical when it comes to breaking free from pornography. Jesus said, “If your right eyes causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell” (Matthew 5:29.) Don’t let Jesus’ use of hyperbole diminish the power of this statement: Jesus calls for radical amputation of the things that tempts us. Often we are tempted to believe we are stronger than we really are. We leave a few doors open believing we’ll be able to handle them. Instead we need to have the attitude of Job who made a covenant–a solemn promise–with his eyes not to look lustfully on anyone (Job 31:1). Find the small habits that are contributing to the problem and cut them out. Covenant Eyes is named after this verse in Job. It is our mission to help others guard their eyes and hearts from online temptations. You can use Covenant Eyes free for 30 days. Just use the promocode YouVersion when you sign up. Action Step Read the article My Personal Purity Battle Plan: 28 Things I Try to Never Forget. In this article Jason George outlines all the measures he puts in place to put distance between himself and the temptations he faces. Nearly all of his ideas translate to anyone in any situation – male, female, single, or married. Reflection What have you told others about your struggle with pornography? Schedule time to talk to your accountability partner soon, if you haven’t already. Radical life changes are necessary to break free from pornography addiction. Create and live out a battle plan to fight pornography in your life and include your accountability partner in this pursuit. |

Day 6: Secrecy is the enemy It’s Day 6 of Overcome Porn, and today is all about the things that fuel temptation more than any other: isolation and secrecy. In the late 1990s, Dr. Alvin Cooper noticed what he called the “Triple-A Engine” of Internet porn: accessibility, affordability, and anonymity. Thanks to the Internet, porn is easily accessed, very affordable (even free), and offers the cloak of anonymity or secrecy. Dr. Cooper considered anonymity (secrecy) the most significant of these factors. When the porn user believes he or she is unseen and undetectable, inhibitions are lowered. For many people, the first step to run from pornography is running from secrecy. When we bring secrets to the light, the enemy no longer has power over you, and Jesus as the “light of the world” (John 8:12) now holds all power, which is the power of love, mercy, and healing that will pour great life within you. Action Step Watch at least one of the following videos. In the first video, Porn Scar: Get Free, Stay Free, Free Others, Richie Cruz talks about his double life that nearly destroyed his marriage and how confessing his sin finally brought about healing. In the second video, Girls Hooked on Porn: Battle Notes from a Weathered Fighter, Liz Vogt talks about the healing that honesty brings when you’re a woman addicted to porn, even when you are facing the shame of your own sin. Reflection What's the one thing that stood out to you in the story you watched? |

Day 5: Why your resolutions always fail (and how to succeed) About 45% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, but 88% end in failure. When you’re resolved to stop something, especially something as pleasurable as watching porn, the deck is stacked against you. So how do you set a resolution that sticks? 1. Start with small, measurable goals Break your overall goals into a series of steps, focusing on sub-goals that are concrete, measurable, and time-based. The Bible is replete with such wisdom. Jesus says those who finish well as disciples are those who anticipate the measurable steps along the way (Luke 14:28-30). 2. Focus on rewards The top 10% who achieve their resolutions are those who regularly remind themselves about the benefits. Create a checklist of how life will be better once you break free… including the rewards (Hebrews 11:24-26). 3. Establish tangible reminders Those who live up to their resolutions tangibly map out their progress, writing down their smaller goals and the benefits they desire. Do what works for you! Stick Post-It® notes everywhere. Wear a ring or bracelet. Set alerts in your phone or on your calendar. This is also Scripturally based (Joshua 4, 1 Corinthians 11:23-26). 4. Be accountable for your goals Those who achieved their resolutions told their friends and family about their goals. This increased the fear of failure and created a network of support. The same is true in cases of porn addiction. A study from Fuller Theological Seminary found that those who combined both Christian counseling and using Covenant Eyes Internet Accountability on their devices experienced a 66% drop in relapses, and many participants said they never relapsed. 5. Have the right attitude about slips In our efforts to flee from sin and temptation, people often have a lot of resolve at the beginning, but that resolve tends to dwindle. This is why we need a long-term strategy for change (Luke 14:28-33, Proverbs 24:27). We must remember this truth: When you are at your best, plan for your worst. When your resolve to quit porn is high, it is important to remember a day will come when your resolve will not be as high, and we need to have a plan in place that carries us through those days. Action Step Generate a plan to integrate these five steps in your life and stay motivated amidst all of life’s ups and downs. Reflection What is one memorable take-away you learned from today’s devotional? |

Day 4: Finding your triggers Today is all about finding your triggers. Yesterday Matt Fradd talked about writing down your exit strategies–what to do when you feel the temptation to look at porn. But this can be difficult to do if we don't know what our triggers are (1 Thessalonians 5:22). Dr. Peter Kleoponis explains, “A trigger is a person, place, thing, emotion, or experience that can easily lead one into viewing pornography. Some triggers can be easy to identify, such as a day at the beach with young girls running around in bikinis. […] While there are countless triggers out there, we can divide them into two categories: sexual and non-sexual.” Sexual triggers include things such as pop-up ads, TV commercials, lingerie catalogs, sexual scenes in TV shows, movies, video games, etc. Advertisers, TV producers, and pornographers know that sex sells, so they use sex to sell—but such content could easily become triggers for pornography use. For some people, just the sight of a computer, cell phone, etc., could be a sexual trigger. Even memories of past pornography can be a trigger. Non-sexual triggers can be harder to identify; however, they are far more powerful than sexual triggers. They are usually rooted in painful emotions. Some people then turn to pornography to cope with these painful emotions. To help identify non-sexual triggers, Kleponis uses the acronym BLAST. B: Bored or Burned OutL: LonelyA: Angry, Apathetic, Afraid, Ashamed, or AbandonedS: Sad, Stressed, or SelfishT: Tired Kleponis further explains, “Once you understand what your sexual and non-sexual triggers are, it’s not difficult to develop strategies to prevent you from falling into pornography use. Remember, the pornography use is the symptom. Understanding triggers can help you uncover and effectively deal with the root causes of it. This can contribute to lasting sobriety.” A good exit strategy (1) plans to avoid needless triggers, and (2) has a plan for how to respond to triggers when they come. Action Step In this video, Matt Fradd talks about Dr. Kevin Skinner’s “pornography activation sequence,” including the first step of the sequence: triggers. Reflection When a trigger comes along, what will you say to yourself and what will you do? |

Day 3: Super-practical steps to quitting porn In our journey to shape our character, sometimes the simplest strategies are neglected the most, but often we need to start with small simple steps. Our new choices will eventually become habits, which will eventually become part of our character. And why should we care about our character? Your character is all about your very makeup: what makes you the person you are, your very nature. This includes mental and moral qualities, temperament, disposition, and ultimately your personality. Your character is shaped by endurance, and is rooted in the work of the Trinity (Romans 5:3-5). There are many things that will shape our character in this life, including suffering. In Interior Freedom, Jacques Phillippe explains that in times of suffering it is of greatest importance to live in the reality of each moment. He explains, “Nobody has the capacity to suffer for ten or twenty years; but we have the grace to bear today the suffering that is ours now. Projecting things into the future crushes us–not experiencing suffering but anticipating it.” Matthew 6:34 states “Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.” This invitation calls for us to be present to the day at hand and not to worry ourselves about the past or future. In order not to be overwhelmed, it is important that we be present to the day’s problems only. Matt Fradd shares that one practical step for quitting porn is, in fact, be present to today, thus not to make promises like “I’ll never watch porn again.” Instead, he suggests that you start with, “Today, I will not watch porn.” Matt Fradd explains, “You need to stop thinking about sexual freedom as a destination and start thinking about it as a daily—sometimes hourly—choice.” Sexual freedom is not as much a destination as it is a daily and hourly choice. Take it one step at a time. Step forward and step up in order to meet the challenge of sexual freedom on a daily basis. Action Step This brief video shares some of the critical steps to defeating porn. After you’re finished watching, take time right away to implement some of the steps mentioned. Reflection How does consuming pornography impact your character? What are your “positive motivations” for quitting pornography? |

Day2: Is it even possible to break free from porn? It’s Day 2 of Overcome Porn, and today we begin our look at the first key to freedom: Run From. (The other two strategies are Run To and Run With, but we’ll talk about those later.) 2 Timothy 2:22 starts by saying, “Flee youthful passions.” Over the next 12 days, the goal is to equip you with strategies and important truths about how to do this. The above passage is probably one of the most concise bits of advice in the Bible about how to fight lust. In the full text, Paul lists three essential steps: (1) run from, (2) run towards, and (3) run with. We are told to run from youthful passions, the cravings of lust. This includes physically fleeing: running away from tempting situations. This includes visually fleeing: shifting our eyes away from lustful images. This includes mentally fleeing: bouncing our thoughts away from lustful imaginations. When we want freedom from our nagging habitual sins, we often want a private solution to our seemingly private problem. We don’t want to involve anyone else. But the Bible doesn’t point us to private solutions. Christian accountability relationships are one of God’s means of changing us from the inside out. If you haven’t chosen one already, make sure you seek out someone to hold you accountable, especially for your Internet use. Action Step In this video, Matt Fradd talks about the important mentalities we need to have if we are going to flee from temptation. Tomorrow we’ll get really practical, but today we need to lay some groundwork. Reflection Have you ever promised yourself to “never view porn again”? Think about why it is important for you to commit to integrity one day at a time. Just as Joseph ran from Potiphar’s cheating wife (Genesis 39:1-23), you too can run from temptation. Today you have been equipped with the know-how to outrun the most powerful temptations. |
Romance / Re: Want To Stop Porn And Masturbation? Get In Here by SirKriz(m): 4:04pm On Sep 16, 2017 |
I'll post 2 tips everyday for the next 20days. I believe this will be of help to someone. They are from a Study Material I saw in YouVersion Bible. Stay strong and win your battles daily. The key to #AntiFapping is to see it as a Journey and not as a Destination. Day 1: Who sees your dirty laundry? It's Day 1 of Overcome Porn and Masturbation : the 40 Day Challenge! Overcoming pornography temptations is difficult, but you can find freedom. Over the next 40 days we’ll look at Biblical strategies to break free. Your first step is to find an accountability partner to encourage you through this journey. Don't think of an accountability partner as merely someone who hears your faults and weaknesses. A good partner is there to remind you of the person you want to be. A good partner is not someone who can merely call you out on your sin, but someone who can call you up to the person you want to become. Defining Accountability “Accountability” is used to encapsulate a whole host of ideals God has for relationships in the Christian life. James 5:16 – Mutual Confession and Energetic Prayer This is the classic creed of accountability relationships. We are urged to regularly confess our faults to one another and pray for each other. The incentive offered is tremendous: “that you may be healed.” Hebrews 10:23-25 – Motivating Others to Radical Love and Hope This shows us that relationships are crucial to our perseverance and growth. There are three relational commands in this text: (1) meet together, (2) stir up one another, and (3) encourage one another. Hebrews 3:13 – Unearthing Secret Sin This is more than a general encouragement. It calls us to speak and listen to one another in such a way that we help one another see how sin is operating at the level of the heart. We must dig beneath the surface in our accountability relationships. We must go beyond mere behavior and look at motivations. As you read each of the above Scripture passages, ask yourself: What would your life be like, and how would it be different, if you intentionally and regularly lived an accountable life seen throughout the Bible? Action Step Watch this video to learn more about choosing an accountability partner. Then invite someone to hold you accountable, especially for your Internet use (we strongly recommend you get a service like Covenant Eyes Internet Accountability). In your first conversation with your accountability partner, talk about how your lives would be different if you regularly met with fellow believers to intentionally live out the “one anothers” and “each others” of the Bible. Reflection What is one memorable take-away you learned from today’s video? |
