As part of the build-up to his Kingmaker Concert holding April 29 in Warri, Delta State, Music star and Alterplate Music boss, Harrison Tare Okiri famously known as Harrysong earlier today, Friday, March 30, 2018, facilitated the release of three inmates from Okere prison in Warri, Delta State.

Harrysong who coincidently turned a year older kicked off the blessing series of his Kingmaker Concert by visiting the correctional facility, celebrated with the inmates and donated gift items to them.

He also promised them a cash gift of N500, 000, replacement of the musical equipment in the Prison chapel as well as sports materials to the prison’s Ayoko football club.

Speaking to the inmates during the visit, Harrysong told the touching story of his growing up, highlighted the need for them to continue to hold on strong despite incarceration, to remain hopeful for as long as they have a life.



He also challenged the inmates to continue to pray for Deputy Controller, Airiohuodion Solo whose father figure is simply unputdownable.

The 3 released inmates (Sylvester Kporowe, Henry Umukoro, Lucky John) 2 of whom were convicted with an option of fine which they were unable to pay till Harrysong came to their rescue. The third person, an Awaiting trial male, will be released on bail from the court, after the holiday.

Hon. Rotimi Olowo representing Somolu Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly recently supported Mrs. Ijeoma Uzoma who was delivered of a triplet at Tolu Crescent Medical Centre, Ajileye Street, Bariga with a sum of N250,000.00 to help cushion the effect of raising the babies at this vulnerable age.

Olumoko1 as fondly called by his constituents was contacted via text messages by the younger sister of the Mother of the babies, Mrs. Uchechi who lives on Sodeke street, Somolu.

Mrs Ijeoma Uzoma’s husband was gathered to have been at large in December after learning his wife was pregnant with Triplet following a pregnancy scan.

Father of the babies, Mr. Chukwudi who hails from Imo state was said to have absconded on hearing his wife was pregnant with a triplet.

Mrs. Ijeoma Uzoma exppressed her gratitude to Hon. Olowo Rotimi for his timely intervention in keeping her hopes alive. She also in the same vain applauded the Chaiman of Bariga LCDA, Mr. Kola Alabi for his kind gesture.

“I want to appreciate Hon. Olowo for coming to my aide at this crucial time. I wasn’t expecting it as I never personally sort for his help, yet he heard the cry of my younger sister and came to my rescue. I must not forget the immense contribution of the Chairman of Bariga LCDA Mr Kolade Alabi. May God continue to bless him abundantly.

Mr. Kolade Alabi had earlier supported the family in settling the hospital bills and others.

HON. Olowo Rotimi in a visit to the hospital through his Personal Assistant, Mr. Adedayo Saula admonished the family to remain strong especially at these trying times. He encouraged the hospital to do its best in ensuring speedy recovery of the mother and her three daughters.

Hon. Olowo also salute the Chairman of Bariga LCDA, Mr. Kolade Alabi for his timely intervention.

Mr Chukwudi, father of the three children is yet to be found as at filing this report and his family members including his parent who are not willing to associate with the mother of the new born and her daughters denied knowing his whereabouts.

A pregnant lady’s unfortunate death has left her people heartbroken. According to information gathered online, the deceased was involved in a fatal motor accident while traveling with other passengers in a commercial bus on Tuesday, March 27th.

Her sad sister, Kalu Mercy Oluchi who lives in Umuahia Ibeku, Abia state – took to Facebook to shared the sad news as she wrote;

If money can bring you back we would have done everything possible to get you back…. Dearest Sweet Sis,

You were a strong woman and would have defeated death if it was a physical fight to safe your life and that of unborn Baby.

Officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has uncovered a suspected ritual killers’ den at the Aleyo settlement on Ojoko Road, in the Asa Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Ayinla Adeyinka, who spoke through the command’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ayodele Bello, in an interview with journalists in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on Monday, said the agency visited the scene following a complaint by a victim, Mr. Muminu Abdulrahman.

He explained that Abdulrahman had reported on Saturday that he had been extorted of N5m by the suspects.

According to Punch, the NSCDC team discovered many shrines and other gory objects at the scene.

He said two suspects, Mr. Kazeem Absdulsalam (54), of Omu-Aran, in the Irepodun LGA, and Mr. Adamu Hussein (36), of Marafa Oja, in the Ilorin East LGA, Kwara State were apprehended at the scene.

The NSCDC boss claimed that Abdulsalam had confessed to ritual activities and scams through money doubling.

Adeyinka said,

“It was a case of ritual activities and money doubling under false pretences and extortion. The complainant filed the case on March 24, 2018. He said about N5m had been extorted from him.

“When we got there, we saw some gory scenes at the shrines. Among the things we saw were the Alaragbo shrine, Abiku shrine, Iguni shrine, Baba Esu shrine, Baba Agba shrine and a lot of other things. The sight was appalling.

“From our investigation, it was clear that they had been carrying out ritual activities and collecting money from their victims under false pretences.”

Adeyinka said the command, in collaboration with the state government, was working hard to get to the root of the incident.

The NSCDC boss also warned members of the public to avoid falling prey to fraudsters and ritual killers.

“Investigation is still ongoing; the complainant is with us. We are still unravelling the mysteries surrounding the incident. The prime suspect, Mr. Kazeem Abdulsalam, confessed that he asked the complainant to provide N280,000 to appease the gods.

“The complainant fell victim to them because he had been entreating the gods through them before now. Maybe he was able to record breakthroughs in the past and he still believed he could do it again.”

Some members of the community said they were surprised at the discovery, adding that they always noticed exotic cars being driven into the area.

A resident, who identified himself simply as Tunde, said he did not know that the place was a den of ritual killers.

He said,

“I have been wondering why big people always go to that place. They go in big cars. We did not know that the place is a den of ritual killers.”

One of the suspects, Abdulsalam, denied that he was a ritual killer.

He explained that the complainant had told him that he (Abdulrahman) did a money ritual and he was afraid that he could die because of it.

He said the complainant sought his spiritual help to avert the impending death.

The suspect also claimed that Abdulrahman sought his service for good contracts and money doubling.

He denied extorting N5m from the victim, adding that he demanded N280,000 from him.

Abdulsalam said he usually helped people who had marital, family and social challenges, adding that the shrines were not for destructive purposes.

According to him, the shrines were to provide a good location for people shooting films and home videos.

The Director-General, Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu has rescued a newborn baby who was abandoned by a teenage mother after delivery at Anderson Primary Health Center, in the creeks of Calabar South, Cross River State.

The incident took place early hours of 20th March 2018 immediately after delivery by the mother.

According to the staff on duty during the incident, Mrs Elizabeth Offiong, a Chief Community Health Officer said on her arrival at the health centre by 7.35am she met a young teenage girl at the doorpost of the facility lamenting over lower abdominal pains.

“I thought it was an infection because most teenage girls here have STIs and will usually reject condom. but when she was examined, I found out the young girl was pregnant and was passing through labour. Not quite long, she gave birth to a bouncing baby boy in our ward”, says Madam Elizabeth.

Madam Elizabeth said after giving birth the teenage girl refused to undergo series of tests as she outrightly rejected the food bought for her. She refused all our offers to treat her and rather insisted that she doesn’t want the child.

Mrs Elizabeth also stated that the teenage girl who gave her name as Mary Bassey residing at No. 5 Edem Nsa Street threatened to dump the baby in the gutter if the Government does not take ownership of the child. All effort to persuade her to receive treatment was unsuccessful as she quietly ran away and abandoned her newborn baby.

She noted that all trace to locate the residential address given by the teenage mother became unfruitful as such address and name did not exist in Bayside, Calabar South LGA.


Reacting to the incident, while on a visit to Calabar south creeks, the Director General of Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Betta Edu said she thanks God that the teenager managed to even come to the health center to deliver the child rather than delivering at home and dumping her in a bin or toilet that probably would have led to the death of the child.

She noted that her Agency and the State Government led by His Excellency, Senator ( Prof) Ben Ayade believes that every child deserves to live, and every child should be wanted and be planned for or if you don’t want to have children then take up family planning.



She said in Calabar South, the Cross River State Primary Healthcare Development Agency is facing challenges because there are a lot of teenage girls that are pregnant and most of them are HIV positive and it calls for great concerns.

According to her,

“We stepped up health SENSITISATION in this communities and health workers have been going for house to house mobilization trying to convince them to take up family planning but the have rejected Family Planning. The culture needs to change, our chiefs need to help us, churches and prayer houses need to join in this advocacy for family planning, this young girls between 11 and 17 need to protect themselves and abstain from sex where possible so they don’t have children which are not planned for or unwanted in the society with lack of motherly care”.

Finally, she said the baby which has already been named Anderson (after the facility) will be known as “ANDERSON AYADE” because State Government will take over the support for the child till proper adoption is done.

One of the kidnapped Dapchi school girls that were released by the Boko Haram sect has provided a detailed account of their journey after the insurgents abducted them on February 19.

Clad in hijab (overall gown) that was uniformly sewn for all the girls by the Boko Haram, Khadija Grema said their journey to captivity was a harrowing experience that caused the death of some of her school mates.

“We were at the school, about to break our usual Monday voluntary fast, when the gunmen arrived. Everyone was confused and people were screaming; one of them said we should come close to him. They were shooting and everyone was confused. So we ran towards the school gate,” she said in Dapchi on Wednesday.

“When we got there, they called on one Babangida to bring vehicles. They brought the vehicles and began to drive us away. Outside Dapchi, they asked that who amongst us were fasting. And some of us that were fasting were asked to come down from the vehicle. They gave us Maltina, meat, groundnut cake and pure water.

“We had our prayers after breaking the fast. Then we continued our journey until we got to a place with a big tree, they stopped and we were asked to cook food, it was dark, so they put on lamps.

“After eating, then we continued the journey for a long time until we got to a place where there is river, we came down from the trucks and they asked us to enter some canoes that took us across the river.

“Across the river, they took us to a house in one village that I don’t know; we stayed there for sometime. The next day, they came to ask us to come out and we were taken to the river and continued the journey until we got to where a thick forest area. That was where they kept us; and they have not changed our location since then.

“They have been feeding us very well, they treated us very well. They did not beat us; they did not molest us.

“The people that took us away were all speaking Kanuri and Arabic. They didn’t tell us any meaningful reason why we were freed and returned. They just said we are Muslims and they felt it was right for them to free us so that we will not suffer.”

She said some of the girls, apparently the very young ones, who were trampled upon while they were packed in the vehicles that took them out of Dapchi, died on the way.

“Five girls died while we were on the way to the bush; most of them died because they were trampled upon inside the vehicles,” Khadija said.

She added that their abductors did not molest them sexually.

“They did not molest or sexually harass us,” she said. “They even said it was wrong for women and men to sit in the same place.

Khadija added that all of them were promised that they would one day be allowed to go home except one of the girls, Leah Sherubu, who was a Christian and who refused to put on the Hijab or accept Islam.

A parent of one of the freed girls also spoke about the girl not released.

Popular Nigerian musician Wizkid has stated that he would love to one day get married and if opportunity presents itself, he will get married to his baby mamas.

The music star was a guest at Urban FM where he made the revelation. According to Wizkid who was answering questions concerning his relationship with record mates, R2Bees, he called them, family and also got to confess his for love Ghana.

He also revealed that he would love to relocate to Ghana at a later point in his life.

“I feel like when I get old like my young girlfriend I’ll just relocate to Ghana by the beachside,” he said.

He also went on to talk about his relationship with all the women in his life. When asked if he would ever marry, he said if all the women in his life decide to marry him someday, he would marry all of them.

Legendary Brazil forward Ronaldinho is to run for parliament in his homeland. The former Barcelona and AC Milan star has submitted his candidacy to stand for office having first signalled his intent last year.
Ronaldinho will run for either the Senate or a position in the Chamber of Deputies in the general election this October.

He will be running for the Brazil Rebublican Party (PRB) and documents approving the 38-year-old’s candidacy were signed in Brasilia before party members.

A 64-year-old grandfather, Daniel Idemudia, has been arrested in Benin, by the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in connection with the discovery of substance suspected to be cannabis sativa in a warehouse.

The State Command of the NDLEA, has launched an onslaught against drug cartels in the State, leading to the discovery of two secret warehouses for weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa.

A total of 5,650 kgs of dried weeds suspected to be the banned substance, were found in the two warehouses.



The first warehouse is a residential house located behind Tipper Garage, Egor, Egor Local Government Area, where 280 sacks of the dried weeds weighing 4,200 kg.

The second warehouse is located at Ugwella-Gidi village, Ovia South West Local Government Area, where 245 sacks of dried weeds weighing 1,450 kgs were recovered.

This major discovery is coming barely few weeks after the Command publicly destroyed 136,844 kgs of various narcotic drugs, including cannabis sativa.

The State Commander of NDLEA, Mr. Buba Wakawa, disclosed that the seizures were made based on intelligence reports​ received by the Command.

Acxording to Wakawa, the exhibits at the Egor warehouse were hidden inside the ceiling of a bungalow, where a 64-year-old grandfather, Daniel Idemudia who resides in the warehouse was been arrested.

“We were shocked to discover 280 sacks of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis sativa all hidden inside the ceiling of the building. This discovery will serve as a warning to others that their warehouses will be discovered and the drugs seized,” he said.

The suspect, PA Daniel Idemudia, who admitted knowledge of the exhibits found inside ceiling in his house, said that a friend kept the banned substance in his house.

“A friend of mine kept the cannabis inside the ceiling of my house. The house was built by my son who resides in Europe. He promised to handsomely reward me after selling the drugs,” he said.

The NDLEA Commander who promised to arrest other members connected with the warehouses, appealed to members of the public with useful information that could lead to the recovery of drugs and arrest of traffickers, to provide such information to the Agency.

The use of Bank Verification Number (BVN) in linking customers’ account, seems to have been making great strides as the statistics obtained from the NIBSS website on Sunday, showed that the total number of Nigerian banks customers dropped from 61 million in 2016 to 59 million in 2017.

It also showed that the linked BVN accounts grew from 26 million in 2016, to 41.3 million in 2017. Confirming the report, a banking industry source disclosed that the reduction in banking customers is not unconnected to the Federal Government’s declaration to fight against corruption.

“FIRST OF ALL, THE INTEREST RATE IS NEXT TO NOTHING, SO THERE IS LITTLE REASON TO KEEP YOUR MONEY AT THE BANK WHEN YOU CAN TURN IT OVER DOING OTHER BUSINESSES,” SHE SAID.

Another bank customer who spoke to NAN correspondent, said she was forced to close down the bank accounts she opened, following the Ponzi schemes which crashed in late 2016 and early 2017.

A source at the CBN told NAN that the reduction in the number of Nigerian banks customers, was caused mainly by the introduction of BVN.

"The reduction may not necessarily be a bad thing. For example, many people opened accounts using different variations of their names. A person bearing Musa Salisu Mohammed, may have other accounts as Salisu Mohammed or Musa Salisu. So with the introduction of BVN, such customers were forced to regularise their names, however, some opted to close down their accounts, which resulted in the reduction of active bank accounts and customers," the source said.

Police Imo State have arrested a couple, Mr. Damian and Mrs. Prisca David, who are indigenes of Taraba State, for allegedly killing their 13-year-old step daughter, identified as Veronica David.

The incident, which happened on Friday at Ogwuaga-Abba in the Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, our correspondent learnt, threw the community into mourning.

The couple, who until the incident were security guards to a Port Harcourt-based businessman, Johnbosco Ozugbo, in his village house, Ogwuaga, were arrested by the police following intelligence information.

The police also arrested one John, who allegedly partook in the killing of the 13-year-old.

A source in the village, Chima Egbu, told our correspondent on Sunday that the incident was a case of culpable homicide.

Egbu said after the couple and John had allegedly murdered Joy, they tied a robe on the girl’s neck to make it look as if she committed suicide.

The source said, “The couple are security guards at Johnbosco Ozugbo’s house at Ogwuaga Abba. Their stepdaughter was living with them until the incident. It was simply a case of culpable homicide because they had always maltreated the poor girl. They were beating her that Friday morning as usual when she slumped and died.

“In a bid to escape justice, they called one John to help them to tie a robe around the girl’s neck for it look as if the girl committed suicide.



“But neighbours who suspected a foul play alerted the police at Nwangele Divisional Police Headquarters. The couple were quickly arrested and the corpse retrieved. The third person was later arrested by the police.”

Ozugbo, who confirmed the development to our correspondent on Sunday, said he was alerted that his security guard and his wife, Prisca, had allegedly murdered their stepdaughter who lived with them.

He said he had to contact the police at Nwangele who quickly moved in, arrested the suspects and recovered the corpse.

“My security guard called me that his stepdaughter committed suicide and he needed an advance salary to take her corpse to Taraba for burial. I was worried on how a 13-year-old girl would take her own life.

“On enquiry, I was told that his wife, Prisca, hit the girl with a plank on her head and she died immediately. A boy in the compound told me that he saw the woman hit the girl a plank.

“I quickly involved the police and the couple were arrested. The boy who said he saw the woman kill her own stepdaughter went with them to the police station to put it in writing. The corpse is ready for autopsy. I will ensure that justice is served,” Ozugbo said.

Confirming the development in a telephone conversation with our correspondent, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Chris Ezike, said he had ordered the homicide section of the command to take over the matter.

2018 is just a few days old but there’s already a lot of excitement in the air, particularly in the entertainment industry. Many artistes have vowed to blow our minds this year but it remains to be seen how many of them will match their talk with action.

Here are some of the top Artistes to watch out for in 2018.
Wizkid

Ayodeji Balogun, aka Wizkid, is arguably the most visible music artiste in Africa at the moment. He has been able to successfully export his sound across the world, and he has caught the ears and eyes of people that matter in the global entertainment space.

At the risk of sounding like a cleric making predictions, 2018 will be the year that Wizkid would reinforce his claim to the music throne. He will likely have more collaborations with American artistes this year and his fame will spread to other continents as well.

Davido

David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, is indeed a lucky chap. He is also very hardworking and talented. He practically ruled the Nigerian music industry in 2017, and it seems he will keep the ‘fia’ burning this year. His rating is very high right now, and millions of fans are eager to witness his exploits in this new year. In demonstrating his resolve to still dominate the industry, the singer came on strong in the first week of 2018.

Olamide

Perhaps the most prolific Nigerian artiste of his time, Olamide, releases songs like they are going out of fashion. Since 2011, Olamide has released albums every year, and it doesn’t look like he will change the formula in 2018. Olamide dominated the airwaves with hits such as Wo, Update, Shaku Shaku, among others. It is almost certain that the Bariga-born singer/rapper is in the studio right now concocting the next brew with which he will enrapture the world. We wait.

Tiwa Savage

Call her the Queen of Nigerian music and you wouldn’t be wide off the mark. Tiwatope Savage worked really hard in 2017 and the results favoured her. 2018 promises to be a fulfilling year for the mother of one, and she seems poised to keep giving her best.

Yemi Alade

Even though Yemi Alade became more popular in other African countries than in Nigeria, that doesn’t take away from the fact that she was very big in 2017. This is another year for Yemi to shine and her antecedents show that she knows what to do to stay relevant. She is hardworking, vibrant and has lots of fans all over Africa.

Falz

Folarin Falana, aka Falz, had one of the most interesting and unique concerts of 2017. Infused with both drama and music, Falz was at his best at the ‘Falz Experience’ show and guests had a great time. He was able to keep guests entertained by himself for over five hours. Over time, he has proved to doubters that he is indeed a man of many parts. Many of his songs topped charts in 2017, and the odds are stacked in his favour to shine brighter this year. In both music and movies, Falz is the guy to watch out for.

9ice

Back in 2008, Abolore Akande, aka 9ice, was one of the biggest Nigerian artistes as he ruled the airwaves with hit songs such as Gongo Aso, Photocopy, Party Rider, among others. However, soon after that, the artiste fizzled out and he was no longer as relevant as he used to be. 2017 was his comeback year and he slid back to reckoning with songs like Living Things and Basiri Mi. If he continues with the same tempo in 2018, he may well find himself at the top of the music industry food chain again.

Runtown

Self-acclaimed ‘sound god,’ Douglas Jack Agu, aka Runtown, is one of the artistes that will dominate the music industry in 2018. He had a good run last year and barring unforeseen circumstances, he would soar higher this year. There is a lot of attention on him and his fans keep increasing by the day. He is likely to do a lot of collaborations both in Nigeria, and within the African continent.

Niniola

Niniola Apata did quite well last year. Her songs, Maradona and Sicker were some of the biggest hits of 2017. The Project Fame academy alumna also released her debut album, This is Me, to rave reviews. With her talent and energy, Niniola can surely sparkle, and 2018 may well be the year that she would become one of the reigning queens of the industry.

Teni D’Entertainer

With just one single, Fargin, Teniola Apata, aka Ten D’Entertainer, took the music industry by storm. The song generated a lot of buzz and a lot of established acts such as Davido regularly praised her on social media for her creativity. She followed up with another single, Pareke, in the last days of 2017, and it is already spreading like wild fire. Teni has got a lot of eyes on her; it’s up to her whether she delivers or not. By the way, she is Niniola’s ‘baby sister.’

Simi

Simisola has been in the industry for quite some time, so her rise did not catch many by surprise. She is clearly talented and she has the drive to back it up. Her eponymous debut album enjoyed positive reviews and some songs off it have gone on to become hits. Many are waiting with bated breaths to see if Simi would solidify her position in the music industry this year. She is already regarded as one of the biggest female artistes in the country but it’s left to be seen if she will eventually wear the crown as the ultimate queen of the Nigerian music industry.

Adekunle Gold

Ever since Adekunle Kosoko, aka Adekunle Gold, breezed into reckoning with his hit song, Sade, he has been pretty consistent. Many didn’t give him a chance to succeed because of his style of music, which he calls urban highlife. However, it is gratifying to note that Gold is one of the most prominent alternative music singers in Nigeria at the moment. He has exported the music outside the shores of the country and his fan base keeps expanding. He is expected to do more in 2018.

Mayorkun

To many observers, Davido hit the jackpot when he signed Mayorkun to his record label, Davido Music Worldwide. Mayorkun has been able to churn out a number of hits such as Eleko, Mama and Che, within a short period and he seems poised to achieve even more feats this year.

Kiss Daniel

There is no doubt that Anidugbe Daniel, aka Kiss Daniel, is talented. His debut album, New Era, was very successful and he has followed up with hit singles like Yeba and No Do. He split from his label, G-Worldwide Entertainment and floated his own company, Flyboy Inc in the latter part of last year. 2018 promises to be a promising year for him.

Mr. P

The dust has settled on the fact that pop twins, Mr. P and Rudeboy of P-Square have gone their separate ways. However, it remains to be seen if the brothers would both succeed as solo artistes. Peter, aka Mr. P, has shown that he is very serious about his solo career, and he actually released songs before his twin brother. His song, For my Head, generated a lot of buzz on the Internet and a lot of fans are waiting to see what he has to offer in 2018.

Rude boy

Paul Okoye, aka Rudeboy, is regarded as the vocal powerhouse of the defunct P-Square group. It is left to be seen if he would recreate the same magic with his solo career. The songs he released in 2017, Nkenji Keke and Fire, did quite well, but 2018 would be the defining year for him and his solo career.

Solid Star

2018 may just be the year that Solid’s star will shine (pun intended). Since his debut, Joshua Iniyezo, aka SolidStar has been quite consistent, but he hasn’t been able to really break through to the top of the industry. Perhaps, that breakthrough would happen this year.

Maleek Berry

Maleek Shoyebi, aka Maleek Berry, used to be known solely as a producer. But in 2017, the entertainer got more prominence as a singer. His feature on Ycee’s hit song, Juice, increased his visibility. His songs, Eko Miami, Kontrol, Been Calling, among others also did quite well. 2018 may be the year that would cement his transition into a full-fledged singer.

Reekado Banks

Ayoleyi Solomon, aka Reekado Banks, released a couple of hit songs in 2017, and with the level of energy he has been exhibiting, 2018 may see him grow even bigger. He seems to know what the audience wants and he gives it to them steadily. After Tiwa Savage, he is unarguably the most successful artiste signed to Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records right now. A lot of eyes are on him to perform this year.

Tekno

Singer and producer, Augustine Kelechi, aka Tekno Miles, has a bright future. Talented and hardworking, the singer has it all going for him. He has also started attracting international attention, and 2018 would surely witness a lot of surprises from him.

Small Doctor

Raw off the streets, Temitope Adekunle, aka Small Doctor, had the whole country eating out of the palm of his hands with his hit song, Penalty. There is a lot of attention on him, and many people want to see what he would offer this year. He has still got the ears of Nigerians, so it wouldn’t be so difficult for him to ‘reign’ in 2018.

A number of Deposit Money Banks in the country have barred their customers from using debit and credit cards to withdraw dollars, euros, pounds and other foreign currencies whenever they travel abroad, investigation by our correspondent has revealed.

The development may put business and leisure travellers, who may need hard currencies to meet some obligations abroad, in a difficult situation.

Also, students who are studying abroad and often rely on withdrawing hard currencies with their Nigerian payment cards from Automatic Teller Machines abroad to meet certain needs may find the situation challenging.

Findings by our correspondent revealed that the naira volatility of the past year made many of the Nigerian banks to get their fingers burnt and the fear of losing heavily to possible future currency volatility was making them to exercise restraint in reactivating overseas ATM withdrawal services for their customers.

However, some banks, which are said to be having high risk appetite and some with partner banks overseas to make settlements easier, are having a smooth ride and as such, have reactivated the ATM withdrawal service overseas.

A top banker close to the development, who spoke to our correspondent under the condition of anonymity said, “Each bank has various reasons for not yet activating their overseas ATM cash withdrawal service. For some banks, they ran into losses last year when the naira fell and, as such, they are trying to minimise their risks now.

“For such banks, there is no plan to reactivate it. Some others banks are not ready to reactivate the service because they are trying to check customers who are doing round-tripping. It is for various reasons that the banks are not stopping yet.”

Findings by our correspondent revealed that while almost all the banks allowed customers to use their payment cards to do Point of Sale and web transactions overseas, a number of them had suspended their ATM cash withdrawals without indicating when they would resume.

It was gathered that Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Stanbic IBTC Bank and Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria were among the lenders that had suspended their ATM cash withdrawal services.

When our correspondent put a call through to their customer service centres, the banks confirmed they had suspended the services without stating the reason and possible resumption plans.

The customer service personnel, however, said the PoS service abroad and Web services were available for customers to use.

Some bankers told our correspondent that in terms of volume, Nigerian banks were spending more in overseas settlements from PoS and Web than in ATM cash withdrawal.

They said the fear of money laundering by customers was a major reason why some banks had to stop ATM cash withdrawal overseas.

They also stated that for some banks, the settlement issues they had when the dollar was scarce last year was making them to limit their card usage abroad to only PoS and Web transactions.

Following the crash in global oil prices, the drop in Nigeria’s foreign exchange revenue and the resultant dollar scarcity that hit the economy had made the local banks to suspend the ATM cash withdrawal and the PoS services abroad. They also stopped web transactions.

However, following the improvement in forex supply early this year, some banks announced the resumption of the services.

Some of the banks that have resumed full services in these area include United Bank for Africa Plc and First Bank of Nigeria Limited. Similarly, Zenith Bank Plc, Ecobank Nigeria and Skye Bank Plc have announced that their customers can do the ATM cash withdrawal, the PoS and web transactions.

But some of the banks, which have yet to resume full services, claimed that the regulator was not giving them approval to do so.

Philippe Coutinho will not be able to make his debut for Barcelona until the end of January because he has a thigh injury, the club said on Monday.

“Coutinho has an injury to his right thigh and he is expected to be out for around three weeks,” Barcelona said on their website.

Coutinho, 25, will be officially unveiled by Barca later on Monday, completing a 160-million-euro ($192 million) move from Liverpool, making it the third richest transfer in history

The Brazilian midfielder could, in theory, make his debut on January 28 when Alaves visit the Camp Nou in La Liga.
