The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has failed the federal government’s actions towards the implementation of a Memorandum of Action (MoA) they both agreed to in April 2021, Siggy reports.

ASUP has, however, threatened that its members may withdraw their services in polytechnics across the country if the government fails to implement the MoA, despite the three-month suspension corridor granted by the Union.

The Union said there will be no further warnings if the government does not quickly avert another round of strikes.

This was revealed in a communiqué issued at the end of the 101 regular meeting of the National Executive Council of the Union at the Gateway ICT Polytechnic in Ogun State, which was made available to journalists on Sunday.

The union urged the public to hold the government and its agencies responsible for any other breakdown of industrial harmony in polytechnics.

The communiqué signed by the National Publicity Secretary of ASUP, Abdullahi Yalwa, stated that they are unhappy with the non-release of minimum wage arrears to the staff of federal polytechnics and several state-owned polytechnics, as well as the non-release of the approved sum of N15 billion revitalisation fund for the sector more than three months after the approval.

According to the communiqué, the NEC meeting noted the non-commencement of the renegotiation of the Union’s 2010 agreement despite the reconstitution of governing councils, as well as the continued nonpayment of salaries in several state-owned institutions.

The statement read, “In view of the unsatisfactory status of the implementation of the Union’s MoA signed with the government in April 2021, the Nigerian public should hold the government and its agencies responsible for any other breakdown of industrial harmony in the sector as our Union and her members have shown considerable patience and restraint.

“The Union once again demands that the government should without further delay ensure the release of the arrears of the minimum wage to staff, release the approved revitalization fund for the sector and set up the implementation committee to administer the funds, recommence the renegotiation of the Union’s 2010 agreement and withdraw institutional accreditation to state-owned institutions where salaries are owed to staff."

The NEC also noted the events at Federal Polytechnic, Ekowe, where the process of appointment of the Rector was flawed from inception leading to the shortlisting of unqualified persons, as well as Federal Polytechnics, Offa and Mubi where the process has been tainted by the deliberate exclusion of qualified persons.

The Union also explained that the events at the Federal Polytechnics, Oko, Offa, Auchi and Kaura Namoda where council affairs were being relocated to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, saying that this was being done without due consideration to the cost implication on the institutions, the safety of staff and sensitive documents, as well as general administration of the affected institutions.

"The government should revisit the appointment processes for principal officers at the Federal Polytechnics Ekowe, Offa and Mubi with a view to ensuring strict compliance with the provisions of the Federal Polytechnics Act.

"We called for a stop to the emerging trend of taking governing council meetings and activities to Abuja by governing councils of some polytechnics," the Union stated.

Texas School shooter identified as Simpkins has been charged a bail of $75,000 after his family claimed he was being bullied by jealous kids because he had "nice stuffs", Siggy reports.

Family members say Simpkins was constantly "bullied" because he "was rich" and "had nice things."

Cell phone video taken by another student shows a boy who looks like Simpkins covering his head with his hands while a 15-year-old boy punched him repeatedly.

After the fight, Simpkins reportedly retrieved a black Glock handgun from his backpack and shot the 15-year-old, who is still hospitalized.

Simpkins also allegedly shot 25-year-old Calvin Pettitt, a male teacher who broke up the fight. Pettitt was shot in the back. A female student who was grazed by a bullet was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

Simpkins' family claims he was bullied by other students because he has nice things. They claim he lashed out in self-defense.

His family described Simpkins as a "loveable" kid who was only trying to defend himself.

Mayowa David Adinlewa, a Lecturer in Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, (AAUA) Ondo state, has been confirmed to be abducted by unknown gunmen on Friday, October 1, Siggy reports.

The 35-year old lecturer was said to be travelling to Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State to see his family when he was kidnapped along the Akure-Ikere Ekiti road.

It was gathered by Siggy that the victim’s vehicle which was spotted on the road unlocked attracted some residents of the community who raised the alarm over the development.

The elder brother of the victim, Toyin Adinlewa, who confirmed the abduction disclosed that his abductors have contacted the family, demanding N10m as ransom to secure the freedom of the lecturer.

It was further gathered that the kidnappers also contacted the wife of the victim warning her not involved security personnel in the release of her husband.

A source close to the wife explained that Adinlewa was heard telling his wife that they have been trekking for hours in the bush with nothing to eat or drink.

He said the lecturer disclosed that his leg is aching from the long walk and that his phone would soon be taken away from him by his abductors.

The source said the call was interrupted by one of the suspected abductors before the conversation came to an end.

Confirming the abduction, spokesperson of the State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami, said the incident happened at the boundary of Ondo and Ekiti states.

She said some people who noticed the vehicles parked on the road informed the police who raced to the place and later discovered that the owner of the vehicle had been kidnapped.

Odunlami said the family of the victims also reported the incident to the police, saying detectives from the command had swung into action after visiting the scene of the incident.

“Initially, we thought it was a case of an abandoned vehicle. It was later that the family contacted the police that their son had been kidnapped. The incident happened between the boundary of Ondo and Ekiti States," she stated.

"Our anti-kidnapping unit has swung into action towards rescuing the victim. They are already combing the bush and the axis where it happened. We all are on the trail of the kidnappers and arrest would be made as soon as possible. We have told our men to be on the alert, especially those coming to the forest across the state” she added.

Speaking on the demand for ransom, she said, “I’m not aware of contact has been made with the family. I don’t know anything about the demand for ransom."

Education / Ogun State Demolishes School Building That Collapsed Killing A Pupil by Sixsigmahub: 6:58pm On Oct 03, 2021
Update from

It was a tragic day on the 25th of September in Nazareth High School, Imeko-Afon area of Ogun State when one of the school buildings collapsed, killing a pupil and injuring two in the process, Siggy reports.

The Ogun State government has on Saturday taken a step in pulling down a block of classrooms in the said school.

The building, which recently became distressed and partially collapsed on a group of students killing one and injuring two others in the process, was demolished over the weekend on the instruction of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

The governor further directed the immediate reconstruction of the demolished block of classrooms and hinted that any other public building found to be distressed would be pulled down and reconstructed.

According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abiodun, Mr Kunle Somorin, the demolition was supervised by the State Commissioner for Housing, Jagunmolu Jamiu Akande Omoniyi and other top government officials to ensure the exercise was properly carried out.

“The state carried out the demolition of the school building in the larger public interest. The building was discovered to have become weak and could collapse and injure more students if not demolished. We’ll rather pull such weak and aged structures down than allow pupils’ lives to be endangered,” the statement noted

It also hinted that no effort will be spared to prevail on owners of weak buildings; whether premises, schools or private residences to ensure due process and best practices in consonance with the State Building Control Regulations.

“Any building, at all, posing threats to life and property within the state will be pulled down because we cannot compromise citizens’ welfare and wellbeing in the name of managing sub-standard structures and with a view to ensuring better physical planning environment for sustainable development and averting needless loss of lives and properties,” he quoted the governor as directing.

Further justifying the government decision, the statement disclosed that “all identified highly distressed structures, particularly public buildings like schools, hospitals, maternity or health centres will be tested for their structural integrity to be determined and where they fail the integrity test, such buildings will be pulled down and reconstructed”, the statement concluded.
