Education / Chinedu John: 19-Year-Old Who Sued JAMB For N1 Billion Over Result Arrested by Sixsigmahub: 4:14pm On Sep 03, 2021
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board said it has handed over a 19-year-old candidate in the 2021-2022 Unified Tertiary and Matriculation Examination to the police for investigation over what it described as “result tampering.”

According to the board’s Registrar, Prof Ishaq Oloyede, who briefed journalists at JAMB’s headquarters in Abuja on Friday, the candidate, Chinedu John, had claimed he scored 380 in the examination conducted in June but was surprised to receive 265 from the board after the results were released.

He said following alleged “alteration” of the UTME score, the candidate’s father, John Ifenkpam, approached an Enugu-based lawyer, Ikeazor Akaiwe, who wrote to JAMB for another opportunity for the boy to retake the examination and demanded N1 billion as damages.

According to Oloyede, the lawyer said the N1 billion was to cover for the physical and emotional trauma the boy had been through from being offered “two separate scores.”

The candidate was said to have claimed that his UTME scores from 2019 till 2021 had been “altered” by the board, thereby denying him the opportunity to study his desired course — Medicine.

On Friday, the candidate, his father and lawyer travelled to Abuja from Enugu State following an invitation by the management of the board led by Oloyede.

Initially, the boy was given few minutes to “come clean” in a closed session with his father and lawyers about the results he was parading but insisted that his original score from the examination was 380.

After back and forth, the board tendered evidence to counter the claim by John and his legal representative.

At the Friday meeting, documentary evidence tendered by the board showed that John actually scored 265 and not the 380 he had claimed.

Oloyede accused the candidate of alteration, adding that he will be handed over to the police for investigation and subsequently prosecuted.

The registrar said John was among 11 other candidates who allegedly forged their results that the board would prosecute.

He said the original result issued to him would be withdrawn pending investigation.

Oloyede said, “We have 11 of them who tampered with their results. Two of them are already being prosecuted. The remaining ones we are going to withdraw their results and prosecute them. The main purpose is to sanitise the system, including our own staff.

“There was never any communication of 380 with this boy. Because this boy has accused JAMB, we are going to withhold his result until the investigation is concluded. We are going to request that our interactions with him be subjected to the public.”

His lawyer, Ikeazor, appealed to the board to instead give room for further investigation.

“I will not stand against investigation. Let there be investigation but what I will not agree to is to prejudge him,” he said.

Earlier, John had said, “The result I have been receiving is not the result I am entitled to. I wrote the first JAMB in 2019.

“The first time, they sent 328 and later, I saw 278 when I checked it. I printed it. I couldn’t meet up for admission that year. I wanted to study Medicine and Surgery at the University of Ibadan.

“In 2020, the same thing happened. I scored 343, but by the time I went to the portal to print, I saw 306. I used the 306 and it gave me admission in UI. But because I didn’t have Further Mathematics, I had to forfeit it.

“I decided to leave Medicine and Surgery for them in 2021 so I picked Petroleum Engineering. In 2021, JAMB issued me two results. I saw 380 the first time I checked and then the second time, I saw 265.”

But the board’s Public Relations Officer, Fabian Benjamin, claimed that the candidate confessed to the crime.

He said, “The candidate who was paraded for forging the Board’s result has confessed after the Board discovered that he saved his sister’s number on his phone as 55019 and used the phone to send the fake result to his phone.

“When he sends such results, they come as 55019.

“He pleaded for mercy that he had to do that when the result he got was not up to what could give him his desired programme.”

Update from

Lack of furniture at Gbaranowei Grammar School, Okolobiri, in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, has forced students of the school to sit on the bare floor to learn and take their examinations.

The school, which was established in 1973 with a boarding facility for boys and girls, is the alma mater of the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and the state Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ayibaina Duba.

correspondent, who visited the school on Monday, observed that two classroom blocks had deteriorated badly without ceilings, seats, doors and windows.

Several students were seen sitting on the floor to take their promotion examinations, even as the walkway was dilapidated.

gathered that the challenge of lack of seats in the school worsened after a flood in 2012 destroyed many chairs, as the few available now were provided by the Parent-Teacher Association.

In the SSS 2B classroom, there were just 11 chairs that could sit three students each of the 79 pupils in the class. The school has a total student population of over 2,000.

The staff room was no better, with not more than eight tables and chairs, while many of the teachers stood.

The Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Ayibaina Duba, explained in an interview that the government was aware of the situation and steps were being taken to address it.

Update from

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday launched Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme designed to create new opportunities for 20,000 recent graduates annually.

Speaking during the ceremony at the presidential villa, Abuja, he assured that it would provide an opportunity for mentors who were already engaged in various industries, gained relevant experience and built capacity over the years to provide mentorship and support for young Nigerians.

The president explained: “Beyond the skills and work experience, we will be building a new culture of mentorship and guidance that can chart a new course for skills development and work experience in our country.

“We believe that as this programme creates new opportunities for 20,000 recent graduates annually, the beneficiaries will use the opportunities presented to them and maximize their 12 months of engagement.”

According to him, “The jubilee programme will provide a pathway for young Nigerians to gain work experience in top tier organisations, gaining relevant skills and building the right networks for the future in various sectors including information and communications technology, financial services, trade, manufacturing, agriculture and agro-processing.

“Other sectors include mining, telecommunications, creative industries and technology, education, health, research and development, and public sector institutions. We believe that building the right skills and experiences across these sectors are important to sustain the economic growth we are experiencing.’’

He said the programme will build on other efforts of the government to support young Nigerians such as the N75 billion youth fund in the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, which was created to support young Nigerians in business or with business ideas, with N25 billion released annually for three years.

The president encouraged all eligible Nigerians to apply for the jubilee programme while urging private sector organisations to join by providing work placement opportunities, mentors and funding, gathered.

“I would like to say thank you to the United Nations Development Programme and the European Union for their support on this vital initiative. And I hereby declare the program open,’’ he said.

Update from

Students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) will begin their second semester examination today. They are, however, lamenting the haphazardness of the academic session, reports.

Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has been disrupting education worldwide – and many schools are still reeling from its effects.

The impact has especially been hard on students of UNILAG who had to vacate the hostels on July 14, mid-way through the second semester because some members of staff and students contracted pandemic.

The university resumed for the first semester of the 2019/2020 academic session on January 25, 2021 and held only online classes. The examinations were also fully online.

Conversely, for the second semester, the university resumed physically on May 17, but stipulated virtual lectures for classes larger than 50. However, barely two months after resumption, the University Senate sent students out of the hostels on July 14, because of scare of spread of the Delta variant of the COVID-19.

Last week, the university announced that the 2019/2020 second semester examination would commence physically today and end on September 26.

observed the school environment in the last two weeks during which some students recounted bitterly some challenges they have faced as a result of the disrupted academic calendar.

For Ayomide Jonathan, a 200- Level Accounting student, the prolonged academic session was making him lose interest in education.

“I cannot even make concrete plans for my life because the school calendar keeps on disrupting it and I am beginning to look like I am not serious with my life. It has affected me a lot. A single session has been running from 2019 up till now. When will we move to the next level?

“Now, I am beginning to lose interest in the school and education system. If I had started learning a vocation since 2019, I would almost be through with my apprenticeship,” Ayomide said.

If Ayomide was losing interest, Ige Omolara, a 300-Level student, said she considered quitting because of the discouraging situation.

“The setback is drastic. When we resumed 300-Level in January 2020, little did we know that we would be stuck in that session for two years. It all started with the outbreak of the pandemic. We left school around March, while the lecturers were planning virtual learning; ASUU strike began ridding us of the entire year. We are still in that one session, and I’m losing interest in school, if not because I am in year three second semester, I would have considered quitting. I am in class of ’21; we ought to sign out this year but here we are still in 300-Level,” she said.

Adewumi Tope, a public administration student tagged the delayed session as “frustrating” as it deprived him of some of the things he ought to be doing aside schooling.

“The fact that we are wasting a whole lot of time on a session is disturbing and frustrating as well. I can’t even concentrate on my other plans outside school because of the instability of the school currently. It is really frustrating seeing other students in other institutions progressing with their academics and we are just here and confused,” he said.

For most of the semester, the students had their classes online – a situation many did not enjoy.

Tope Adewunmi of Public Administration, said online classes were expensive and dissatisfactory because of poor network.

“As for the virtual lectures, it is not really the best because in Nigeria, the network is not good. Secondly, data subscription money is too much and data quickly finishes these days,” he said.

A Master’s student simply called Niran said he gave up on his programme because the online classes fell short.

He said: “One lecturer held his phone up with one hand and wrote on a sheet with another and asked us if we could see what he was writing. When we said no, he said, ‘look, you people are disturbing me o! that is how I have been teaching other classes’. I just signed myself out of the programme at the point.”

As the students began examinations today, they lamented that they did not have enough classes.

Oluwasetemi Akinseinde told that online classes were insufficient for him to be adequately prepared for the examination. He said it could never be compared to physical classes because studying at home is not effective considering the distractions at home.

“I am virtually not ready for the examination. Number one – The timetable is coming very late and it is actually choked. I only have two weeks for exams. I am writing seven papers and five of them are actually back to back.

“The fact that we are not in school and we were at home, there was a lot of distractions that you could not really read intensively like when you are in school where nobody is disturbing you and you have enough time. Online classes were not enough. It was never enough and would never be enough. Physical classes can never be under estimated,” he said.

Mary Janet, a 100-Level student said that the online classes were not regular and were also time and data consuming. As a result, she said she could not say she was ready for the examination because she was yet to cover some of her courses.
