OSI a north western town which was established over 200 years ago in ondo state in Nigeria is home to different kinds of cultural practices and traditions, since the majority of people based in the land are of the Yourba tribe, they carry out general Yoruba cultural practices like new yam festival, egungun festival etc.

But one preeminent, primitive and most controversial practice of all which is only peculiar to Osi and ipetu-ijesha is the Opa festival..(cane festival)

Opa festival does not involve rituals or making of sacrifices unto any idol, this is why throngs participate in the ceremony. It is all about singing and dancing while some physically fit men and women voluntarily flog each other on their back; the young and the old engage in severe flogging of each other to mark the clearing of the bush for cultivation. Strong young men see it as an exercise while many people see it as a torturous festival.
Now when we are talking about caning, we don't mean play acting, this is a festival where you are seriously caned with fat or thin steady canes to test your courage and endurance, to see if you are really fit to be called a Son and daughter of the land..

The king and cheifs are not left out of this festival , they are free to beat any subjects but they don't get beaten...seriously, you want to beat a king?...

In an interview with the king when he was asked why in this jet age do they still carry out this primitive activities, he said " It is a festival we got from our forefathers which is compulsory for Osi indegenes both home and abroad because it answers prayers,makes pregnant women gives birth easily, it heals and a great protective sheild against all types of physical and spiritual diseases, that is why we love doing it"

Well, thanking God that I am not an indegene of osi town,(winks) but if the sons and daughters of the land aren't complaining, if they enjoy what they do who are we to complain?

So next time you feel like visiting a new place,going on a excursion, or you want to test your endurance spirit, Osi might just be the best place for you and God help you, it might be the time when they are celebrating the
Opa festival.

Whatsapp have finally increased its group members capacity from 100 to 256, maybe due to group admin's complaints on their forums or it might also be part of the new development and reconstruction of the application.remember last month, they made it free forever for members whereby you don't have to renew by paying an amount.
This is a very good and welcome development, as group admins would now be able to add more than 100 members without removing some..
Looks like this year is going to be a year of surprises and new developments.

You might have touched ur nose before, and found what looks like a oil or grease and you may have wondered how it got there, you might have even concluded that the grease is as a result of your too much intake of peanut oil but this is wrong, in this article, i will be talking about nasal sebum(the oil on your nose), how it got there, its usefulness and its disadvantages

So what is Nasal sebum

Firstly what is sebum? sebum is an oil produced by the glands in your skin to lubricate and moisturize the skin and hair,and Nasal sebum, also known as nose grease/oil, is the grease removed from the surface of the human nose but why don't you find oil in all parts of your body, why on your nose? This is the reason.

The pores of the lateral creases (where the nose joins the face) of the exterior of the nose create and store more oil and grease than pores elsewhere on the human body, forming a readily available source of small quantities of grease or oil.


So what are the usefulness of this nasal sebum

1. It is a remedy for dry and chapped lips

2.It can be used to minimize scratches in optical surfaces

3.Nose grease is often recommended as a lubricant for fly fishing rod ferrules

4. It can also be applied on skipping CD's in order to fix it

5.This might be disgusting but it is actually interesting and it works, nosal sebum has antifoam properties and can be used to break down a high head on freshly poured beer or soft drinks


Steps

1. Pour a pint of beer or softdrink so that it foams alot
2. Rub your index finger on your oily nose
3. Dip the finger in the beer

Now, watch what happens. The foam should go down pretty fast. Nice, isn't it? Don't recommend doing it with anyone else's beer, or you would need a great deal of explanation, pray you don't get landed in the hospital..lol.( don't include me please.lol)

Now what are the disadvantages?

1.It can cause the nose to appear oily and clog

2.It can cause nose blackheads.(Blackheads are caused by the oxidation of oil and dead skin cells trapped in the pores of your skin)

3. Nose grease makes your nose slick and make your glasses slide down your nose

4. some people are in the habit of squeezing the greases from their nose and this can be pretty nauseating and disgusting..(I am telling you)

Fresh water snails - Schistosomiasis

Houseflies- cholera, typhoid, dysentery etc


Though there might be arguments that houseflies shouldn't be present, but through their activities , they transfer pathogens of easily communicable diseases like typhoid, cholera, dysentery,tuberculosis etc which since their inceptions have caused over 2 million deaths and a considerable number of people still die from diseases transferred by houseflies yearly.

Rats - lassa fever

The list would be definitely incomplete without the annoying little squeaky buggers...rats, which harbours lassa virus that can be transferred to humans through their feces, urine, touching of infected rats, or even through grains and foods the infected rats have touched.it is known to cause around 5000 deaths annually.
At some point in time, the disease was in the background but it is now rearing its head forcefully in West Africa especially Nigeria where many cases have been reported, and the mortality rate is much more than the survivors rate.

Bats- Ebola

Another notable mention in little animals that cause big disease is the fruit bat which is responsible for transferring the Ebloa virus like infected apes, chimpanzees etc but the bats are a major carrier and was responsible for the high rate of infections in west Africa, the first victim of Ebola, a two year old boy was said to have been fond of playing in a particular tree which was infested by fruit bats.

mosquitoes - Malaria

Who would have thought this tiny ugly insects could be a killer but these mosquitoes through the malaria they transfer caused over one million deaths per year and are stated to have killed half of the people who have ever lived.
Malaria is however caused by the plasmodium parasite, which is spread to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes ,The plasmodium parasite is spread by female Anopheles mosquitoes, which are known as "night-biting" mosquitoes because they most commonly bite between dusk and dawn.but if other mosquitoes bite a person already with malaria, they can also become infected and spread the parasite on to other people.

Sadist. Does this term strikes a bell? I am sure your mind went to the difficult lecturer at your school who is hard with marks, he/she prefers to have most of the students offering his/her courses fail than pass, or your mind went to that boss at your workplace, who never laughs at anything and increases your work load?..you are right, these are sadists, but do you know apart from the official ties, some people receive full blasts of the negativity feelings from sadists..i lived with a sadist for some good years and i could say i have known all i need to know about sadists, the sadistic feelings are contagious and I think I have been infected with some,but thanks to my jovial nature that serves as antibodies, I manage to kick out some of these feelings (just joking, let's get to it)

Do you also know you can be a sadist without knowing you are? Of course nobody would really love to call himself or herself a sadist, but you might be guilty of these characters.


Notice; there might be some rare cases, but sadists all over the world will exhibit five of these listed characters , if not all.


1. Sadists don't love entertainment ; music is life, entertainment is happiness, but sadly, most sadist don't think about entertainment like this, they think singing, listening to music, acting, dancing, watching movies are one of the foolish necessities of life they could easily do without, most of them detest new generational songs, if they were forced to choose, they would choose oldies, ( many people love old songs and are not sadist; for example me )



2. They can cook; believe it or not but most sadists can cook especially the men,since they don't like depending on anybody , and food is one of the basic amenities you can't do without, they learn to cook and they excel at it..these can lead sometimes to unhappiness in their wives lifes because most of the time they would find fault with the woman's cooking..too much salt, peppery etc and they would prefer to do the cooking themselves


3. They dont fight easily : sadists could abuse you and define you in many ways, but it is very rare for a sadist to throw the first punch, they aren't cowards, they can't just bring themselves or stoop so low to fighting, instead of doing all this, they prefer to keep malice and attack in indirect ways which is different from physical combat, they could refuse to give you what you ask for, stops your promotion or reduce your marks drastically.


4. They are intelligent and learned; most sadists are very intelligent and learned, they love education and are passionate about knowledge, since they don't have the time for many things they considered mundane, they turn to their books , they love reading and
Sometimes they have a soft spot for brilliant people and readers.


5. They are pessimistic about most things; this is a major attribute of sadists, they are pessimists, most of the time( I use most of the time because you might never know, there might be some rare cases) they don't see good in things you are doing if it is not being done by them or ideas you have if it isn't theirs..


6. They harbour long term malice.; since sadists don't show and release their hate and anger by fighting or long outbursts, they stored it as malice and nourishes their hate against the person..their malice can run into weeks, months and even years, if the person being hated did not beg intensely for forgiveness from them.


7. They don't get sick easily : sadists are kinda thick skinned against all normal illnesses that affects human beings, though they do get such but it is not on normal occasions mainly because they love being clean and careful in nature, and when they do get sick, they are proud enough to not tell anyone about it unless it is getting critical or out of hand.


8. They are purists ; they love doing things correctly and in the traditional way, they also want everyone around them to be clean , neat and obey their orders without questioning it.


9. Most of them are atheists; most of them don't believe there is a God somewhere and those who believe among them, don't nurture or like the idea of worshipping in a congregation, they dont like the normal singing, praying , dancing etc that occurs in the person , they prefer worshipping in the corners of their rooms, and believes they are holier than others.


10. They sought after perfection; they want to be perfect and wants everything around them to be done perfectly, as a lecturer or a teacher, he wants you to answer questions correctly with no form of mistakes, but sadly, this is a race they can never win because nobody is perfect or can attain the level of perfection

When I found myself by chance on the FBI official website precisely on the internet fraud page, I was scrolling though when I found this about Nigeria and Nigerians..

Out of the fifty four countries that are in Africa , and one hindered and ninety six countries that are in the world, Nigeria is the only one duly highlighted for internet fraud..and highly recognized for internet fraudsters.

I want us to all to drop the mantra " get rich in all ways or die trying"and embrace honesty and uprightness as our watchword, let us also shun all forms of tribalism and seek to promote the national and international image of all Nigerians..
