What do you mean by top graduate jobs? People say this all the time. Do you mean managerial post or working with large multinationals? I am in a study group with IT professional and part of the members are top guys from multinationals and some of them are not graduates and their take home pay is crazy. I am not saying cert does not matter but its definitely not a priority in most organizations.You have to have some sort of experience to get the big jobs. In my previous role, they had to sack a lady from the accounting department and brought in another without a degree but with experience. I am talking about a £70,000 to £80,000 role. Any recent graduate in the UK without experience cant get top jobs unless they use connections. They start from graduate trainee before moving up.

With the approval of new universities in Nigeria by Jonathan, lots of job for qualified teaching staff have been advertised. In Nairaland alone i've seen lots of vacancies for universities.

Truth of the matter is there are jobs in Nigeria but there are less qualified candidates. Our youths of nowadays are okay graduating with a 3rd class or LMPG (let my people go) result and they somehow miraculously want to work in an oil company. . In UK, you want a top graduate job, the lowest entry standard is 2.1. That's before they factor in experience, communication skills and the other stuffs.

Our youths are so lazy they do not make effort at educating themselves beyond undergraduate levels. Coupled with the archaic teaching standards of some universities that churns out half baked graduates. How can a graduate in Business Management or Entrepreneurship be searching for a job? Why not create jobs? Must we depend on Government alone?

To the youths, we should try to educate ourselves beyond basic Bachelors degree. There are lots of cheap professional qualifications one can get. And also you can study for a masters degree online at your own pace. Online learning has evolved and now highly recognized as on-site learning. You can be an employer of labor like me . Government nor go fit pay us if we leave our business say make we find work.

To the adults, it may be too late already but please in God's name let us educate our children no matter how much it costs. Send them to good schools so they can learn properly. So they can learn the difference between propaganda and facts. The last election showed us how much we Nigerians are uneducated even though we think we are! Them deceive us black and blue well well.

In Uk, they factor your experience first before your degree. Lots of people who did not go to university but did apprenticeships are getting paid well. Why do you think UK is still saying they lack skills when they produce a lot of graduates every year.

I have a passion for networks, currently studying towards my ccie lab BT once a while I mix my VMware stuff on my study schedule, I have tons of VMware materials waiting to be consumed, I wanna go the DVC track and the NV track. in 2 months time I will setup my home lab with a couple of dell rack servers maybe an R410 from eBay. I have all the materials needed to study bout 30gig. does anyone have a home lab or do you guys use the VMware HOL

Most IT guys have their own lab. I have a lab at home also.It makes like easy when you can setup delete,break,fix and reconfigure a lab environment so you not worried about doing in in a live environment.It's easy to create Virtual machines fast and configure it to your taste. VMware HOL and Microsoft Virtual lab are okay if you don't have a lab but its since you did not configure them,its hard to understand how its all be setup.

Other developed and developing governments are providing enabling environment and also startup loans and funds to SMEs but here we expect everyone to succeed out of nothing, no enabling environment, no funding, then we blame them when they can't succeed, are Nigerians magicians?

With the high cost of startup, running, market penetration, maintaining international standards, getting trained further and all, you can only get few successes in the industry without intervention funds.

Compare this to agriculture, if government didn't intervene and fund the sector, we would never be where we are today, and we would've kept blaming people in that sector.

We must identify the role technology plays in developing our country, and then pay attention to supporting it to grow, else we will never experience the expected growth and encourage new entrants, 10 years from now, we may still be battling on the same level

But what if the government intervened and fund startups for IT,how will it get better? At the moment, the mentality of most SME is not positive when we talk about IT infrastructure. How many companies are interested in e-marketing? how many companies believe in digital data in Nigeria? How many companies are interested in digital branding? I spoke about one insurance company before that had their staff using paper and biro because their server was faulty for over 3 months. Personally, that shows that they don't care about their IT infrastructure. I have hardly heard of a company whose server infrastructure is down for 48 hours in UK without someone being fired or someone's contract dropped.

I feel the solution is education and law. There has to be a policy about company data in Nigeria.Without that, i don't see much progress in terms of IT infrastructure. Only the big companies can afford to spend money on infrastructure like banks. Speaking of banks,after EOL for windows XP, i saw a few banks in Nigeria using Win-Xp (ATM machine and office PC). That was scary considering the fact that Microsoft stopped supporting and updating Windows XP.

I'm a bit confused but can you explain the bold part? It's my assumption that most companies in Nigeria dont want to spend money on backend infrastructure as they dont value IT. They dont see the value of investing in IT Infrastructure and they complain that servers or deployments are expensive. How will a RHCSA and RHCE Certified professional change this? Are IT Professional going to start doing deployments and MSP cheaply?
How will they be able to educate companies on the value of having digital data? With electricity problems in Nigeria,how will IT infrastructure will be managed for SME?

Oh that's nice - I like getting my hands dirty with technology of that sort. ( you are really advancing in your career i guess) . I am in Nigeria at the moment though and the technology area here is amazing - not like what u used to know years back. For example - I implemented Office 365 for a new company -( they had about 60 Staff) I didn't want to include a customized Login screen - so i didn't use Azure. ( The subscription was just "Business essential" which is about $5 per user.) - Did the deployment in a day ( I was happy and the client was happy lol ).

The thing is - if you are not in the Nigerian space - you really wont know what is obtainable . (Thats just my observation - and assumption is not good at all).

Really? Office365? Wow, that's cool. I'm glad there are companies valuing IT in Nigeria. I am just paranoid about IT in Nigeria. companies still using paper and biro to document is just scary.

CITP stands for Chartered Info Technology Practitioner regulated by CPN. It's not for everybody please. Just like we have ICAN in accounting, COREN in engr, MDCN in medicine.

If the Federal Govt or any big firm is in need of some IT personnels whether for employment or contract, they will first go for CPN approved CITP.

I hope you know what that means.

I see.So Nigeria has its own CITP accreditation

Thanks, you read my post very well, we just need loans to setup on our own and grow, we can pay back, just some credit facility will do, after spending so much learning IT and practicing it to become self enterprising, you still struggle for years dealing with setting up infrastructure and electricity and other realistic issues, we deserve some attention, I don't really need a job, I just need some support in form of credit. Thanks for the post

Credit is not the problem.the problem is companies who don't value IT.

nigeria and nigerians hate progress and advancement. crreate an electronic health record application and no one wants to use it, they prefer file and pen. Create anything, no one wants to adopt it. technology adoption rate is low because the people hate progress.

There is no market for IT product/ service consumption because people and companies are okay where they are.

Nothing to do with govt or electricity.

I think the problem of neglect is multifaceted.

1. Gross incompetence of the so called professionals.

2. Bad economy that leads to massive retrenchment and ultimate neglect of IT professionals.

3. Scheming out of IT professionals in most businesses. They are seen as those that don't generate money to the company. They take all the time. But IT is the backbone of today's businesses.

4. Ignorance of those that determine the economy. They see IT department as useless. They prefer archaic ways of doing things like manually keeping files, sending letters through NITEL etc. They kill IT.

I will stop here for now.

you right there. i think thing will be better if there is a policy in Nigeria about storing data in organisations. i see companies still use paper and biro and the only time they use computers is just to type a letter and printout documents from e-mails.

Now this is it. There is what we call Standard. There is a standard in Medical field, Engineering field, Architectural field, Aeronautical field and also the IT field.

The standard in the IT sector is regulated by CPN just like we have COREN in engineering. You have to be a registered IT Professional ie CITP to benefit what other IT professionals are benefiting else you'll be left behind.

Certifications like CCNA, CCNP, CCIE, SQL, NET ADMIN etc are wonderful but they are not enough to place you there.

Very good question.i have been thinking about it for a while. When you talk about technology in Nigeria,everyone thinks phones and laptops. No one is talking about infrastructure.

i think most businesses don't care about technology if they can save money by doing things manually.

I went to see someone in an insurance company in Lagos 2 years ago and i noticed most of their staff were playing games on PC and laptop and i asked why they were not working on their computer. The guy said their server died 3 months ago so they have been doing thing manually (Paper and biro). i was shocked. No backup server also.With that type of mentality, how will IT infrastructure grow?

Hello Skywalker5 Long time, i have seen it before but not installed SCOM - but its just a monitoring tool. if you know SCCM Very well. then SCOM would be a piece of cake. All that is needed is your lab. (i have seen Orion work thats the equivalent to SCOM.) I see you are doing more infrastructure jobs these days .. are you contracting?

not contracting.I got a very good role.The company is trying to move from Vmware and novell to hyper V and Azure so I got recruited to help with office365 and managing Microsoft aspect so I have to implement System center on the estate.

Since your last visit to Nigeria,how is the Nigerian industry in terms of IT Infrastructure? All i hear is mobile phones and laptops when they talk technology in Nigeria. Are there options for Managed service providers? There are lot of technologies and practices i am getting involved in and i feel it will be good for industries in Nigeria.

What's up Mellorix, have you used SCOM before? I will be deploying SCCM and SCOM on a new server infrastructure soon. i understand SCCM well but still learning SCOM but i need someone experienced in SCOM for best practice and what they have experienced when managing SCOM.
