I think FFK is going a little bit far. Read what he posted today about Hameed Ali on his twitter handle below:

https://twitter.com/realFFK/status/843389326394376192?p=v

FFK should just shut up. The last time I check, it is not written in the constitution that a custom leader should wear uniform when he or she wants to face the senate. And both the senate and Ali should be ashamed of themselves that despite the recession and economic hardship on the citizens, what they will rather bother themselves with is wearing one stupid uniform or not

Politics / Re: 10 Most Developed Local Government Areas In Nigeria-opinion by slurryeye: 3:57am On Mar 17, 2017
Deadlytruth:

The Largest city status of Ibadan was based on population and not landmass. Geographically the largest cities in the world are the most populated ones. If we are to follow your landmass criterion we then can comfortably argue that Benin City, for example, is larger than Lagos since the landmass still available for Benin to occupy is more than 3 times the size of the whole Lagos State. By the same logic Kano is also larger than Lagos. Now that Lagos has overtaken Ibadan to become the Largest City even in the whole Africa does that suggest that Lagos has now got more landmass than Ibadan?
The location of the federal capital in Lagos was what even made it smell all that development by the colonialists. Now, by your own admittance, Lagos of that time was far far smaller in Landmass than the Lagos State of today which came into being through Gowon's creation of twelve states - an action which was remotely triggered by Ironsi's Unification Decree. In terms of population, which forms the most potent factor of development, Lagos was nowhere near any of the regional capitals before Ironsi committed his blunder. It was the centralization of power and revenue purse in Lagos by Ironsi that stunted the growth of all other regional capitals to to the undue advantage of Lagos, hence Lagos soon overtook them population wise and then on all other fronts.
Actually, the largest city status of Ibadan was both population wise and landmass wise in comparison to Lagos city. The basis of our discussion is that you said Lagos wasn't as developed as the other 3 regional capitals, and I have shown you that lagos was more developed than any of the regional capitals by significant margin

Deadlytruth:

Very funny response so far. You have not answered my question as to why Ibadan remained the largest city in West Africa and not Lagos.
Where was Lagos compared with the ancient cities of Ibadan, Benin, etc before colonization?

The reason why Ibadan was the largest city in West Africa was because of its huge landmass. Before Gowon created the original 12 states, Lagos was very small and its landmass was limited to Lagos Island, Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Yaba and Ebute Meta. Other areas like Mushin, Agege, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Epe and Shomolu were under the western region. But after the creation of Lagos state by Gowon in 1967, the regions joined the lagos city, and the population of Lagos increased significantly. By the end of the civil war in 1970 people from other region in Nigeria started mass migrating to Lagos, then the population of Lagos skyrocketed to what we have now.

Though Lagos was in no comparison to most ancient cities in pre-colonial era, however, Lagos experienced drastic developmental changes between 1850 and 1960 (if you care to know, I can give you the reasons for the drastic changes). By Nigeria independence in 1960, Lagos was the most developed city in Nigeria. So I wonder what you imply by saying Lagos wasn't as developed as any of the regional capital before 1966

So in your world development means only beautiful buildings which were even equally present in all other regional capitals? You never heard that Ibadan was the Largest city in West Africa before Lagos later overtook it courtesy of overconcentration of power and redirection of revenue there through the Unification Decree of Ironsi?

Development means the presence of social infrastructures such as roads, bridges, architectural structures, educational institution, seaport, residential settlement, airport etc unless you have another meaning for development. Now tell me any regional capital that has more infrastructure than Lagos before 1966. Lemme break it down for you one by one.

Educational Institution: By 1888 when no other city or town in what is now called Nigeria can boast of one secondary school, Lagos has 4 secondary schools namely CMS grammar school, Lagos Baptist Academy, Methodist Boys high school and Methodist girls high school. Fast forward to 1950 when very few cities have up to 3 secondary schools, Lagos had over 12 secondary school and one higher institution Yaba College of Technology established in 1947. The same Yabatech students became the founding students of the first university in Nigeria, University of Ibadan.

Residential settlement: By 1930s when most regions in Nigeria still have houses made up of mud houses and thatched houses, Ikoyi has developed into one of the most upscale residential area in Africa. The same Ikoyi still remain one of the most upscale area in West Africa if not the whole Africa till date. By 1950s, areas in Lagos mainland like Yaba and Ebute meta has become developed into a mix of residential and commercial activities while Lagos Island with broad street and Marina has become the commercial backbone and lifeline of Nigeria. Victoria Island at the same time represent affluence which is what it is till date.

Roads and Bridges: Before 1960, almost all the roads in what was then Lagos colony were tarred. Carter bridge the first vehicular bridge in Nigeria was built in 1901

Seaport and Airport: the construction of deep water berth with depth of about 550 meters in Apapa port started in 1921, the Ikeja airport which later became Murtala Muhammed airport was built during the world war II. By the time Nigeria gained independence in 1960, Lagos has a functional airport and seaport

Architectural structures: No urban development will be complete without outstanding architectural structures. Starting from first storey building completed in Badagry in 1845 to race course in 1920s, to Ikoyi club in 1930s, to St. George hall completed in 1934, to holy cross cathedral dedicated on 1950s etc.. Lagos has developed into the most urbanized city in Nigeria before 1960

Now tell me with evidences any of the regional capital as developed as one quarter of Lagos before Aguiyi Ironsi unification decree in 1966.

That's why I giggle when some people say Oil money was used to build Lagos

In 1814, during the War of 1812, the White House was set ablaze by the British Army in the Burning of Washington, destroying the interior and charring much of the exterior.

This was done in retaliation for burning Upper Canada’s Parliament Buildings in the Battle of York.

The white house was set ablaze by Canadians during the war of 1812. Though Canada was a territory of Britain then, Canadians take pride in telling anyone that cares to hear that they are the only country in the world that has burnt down the white house grin

Only a return to fiscal federalism/resource control will guarantee the decongestion of Lagos and Abuja as these two cities were not as developed as any of the regional capitals before Ironsi came with his wicked and self-serving Unification Decree.

Did you just say Lagos is not as developed as any regional capital before 1966? Mention any of the regional capital as developed as Lagos before independence. I know you don't like Lagos but just don't say what you don't know
