I have been doing some serious research on buying a biz in Canada, unfortunately, not so many black immigrants have the knowledge. Most of the information I have gotten have been from the Indians as they seem to have the hack for such ventures. This been said, buying and running a biz is a whole new level ( involves time, patience, access to finance, regulatory compliance, staffing etc)

I follow one guy on IG that's into buying businesses, unfortunately the SBA loans he uses in the US, we don't have that variant here in Can.
So my plan is RE, then use profit and pivot gradually to buy a business.

You have a tfsa limit of $7,000 per year which can be rolled over (if you have spent 3 years in Canada as a PR your tfsa limit would be $21,000), you have $2,500 RESP per child per year, you might even have up to a max of 31,560 RRSP limit, you also have a FHSA limit of $40k

My stand remains, if you have not exhausted the above options, Permanent life insurance (whole or universal) is not for you esp if you are doing so for the investment aspect. For most new Immigrants, what we need is a temporary life insurance that covers for any unforeseen circumstances during our working/active years while aggressively utilizing the govt tax free investing options.

As @amdman said in one of his posts “Life insurance is very important, but buy term life policies. The primary goal of life insurance is to protect your family so that they can maintain similar lifestyle if you pass early. If you were intentional with your investing in your working age, your family will not need life insurance to protect them when you are 65years because your savings will be significant and your children will be of working age themselves. Life insurance is to bridge the gap whilst you are still accumulating your investment”.

I have applied for a $1m term now, going through underwriting process.

Rather than do perm life, I will use my working years to invest in RE big time and pivot to buying businesses. If I get up to 20rentals at 50, that will be ok for me at the same time putting funds in TFSA and RRSP and other small investments here and there.

Lols. Mehn . You don hustle. Even me who has been in the data space for over 3 years and I’ve done extensive python coding, I messed up in all the live coding interviews I had to do. So I can totally relate.

Experience matters a great deal tho. Beyond all these 3 months crash course. But even with my experience I got many rejections till I finally started getting offers. Me a whole tech star with over 10 years of experience in many roles . Canada humbled me mehn. When I eventually got jobs in the data space, with my masters and certifications, I didn’t get any 6 figure offers . But I am grateful I got something good in my field. Job search was humbling and exhausting and it was a huge relief to finally find a paid employment.

Online course vendors have sold false hopes to many. Learn data analysis and land 6 figure job. Learn cybersecurity and land 6 figure roles. Blah blah. Maybe it worked a few years ago. But today’s economy is different and every fancy tech role is super saturated. I’m in tech myself but I know that I have to jump on a side hustle fast because somehow, this country can be volatile with jobs. The private sector especially. I hear about layoffs and it’s like a normal thing these days. One has to keep thinking outside the box.

Anyways, let’s just take each day as it comes and keep trying our best.

That's the down side of tech, with the way the industry is saturated, job security is not so certain. I listened to Nivida top guy saying [don't know if he's the one] saying people will not longer need to do coding again, they are setting up AI that will do the coding you want, I just tire mehn.

Several insurance marketers have tried selling those products to me but they have not been able to convince me as to why it is a good investment.

1. I would suggest that before you buy any form of permanent life insurance (whole or universal life) ensure that you have maximized all the available government forms of investments (TFSA, RRSP, RPP, RESP etc).

2. It is better for you to buy a temporary life insurance (term life) 20/ 25years for very cheap premium say $30 - $40 per month than buying a permanent life insurance for $500 per month. you can diligently invest the balance of $400+ in the options listed in 1 above.

3. Majority of the insurance marketers are just interested in the huge commission they make. They earn an Average of 50 to 90% of the your first annual premium. Don’t fall for their pressure. On various what’sapp groups u will see at least 10 Nigerians selling insurance.

4. Permanent life insurance products (whole life and universal) are for the rich folks and established biz owners, who have exhausted all the available govt investment options and are seeking ways to enjoy tax free investments. It is not for new immigrants, folks trying to get their feet established. Infact, for the universal life policy to make financial sense in the future, u need to be putting in at least $700 monthly into it..

I will try to summarily break down Whole life/Universal/Permanent Life Insurance (will refer to them generally as ULP) and compare them with a 20year Term Life Insurance Policy for the average 40yr old with no major existing health issues.

Under a ULP, the policyholder pays for both insurance and investment. However, the policyholder or the beneficiary can only get one benefit and not both. If the policyholder dies, his beneficiaries get only the insurance payment and forfeit the accumulated investment to the insurance company. Alternatively, the policyholder can end the policy and draw his savings or he draws the accumulated savings using various loan schemes.

Let me clarify with an example. For the average 40year old, healthy male, a ULP policy will average $600 - $1000 monthly or more for a $1m insurance policy. A portion of that payment goes to investment, while a portion goes to insuring him. If he dies at 55yrs, his beneficiaries will get only the $1m payout but will not get the accumulated savings. The insurance company will payout $1m and the accumulated investment will be forfeited to it. Practically none of the people selling this product will tell you this.

If that same guy bought a 20years Term life policy, he will pay $70 - $100 monthly as insurance premium. He invests $500 monthly in an S & P 500 linked mutual fund (which has returned an average of 11% over the last 20years). If he dies at 55years, his beneficiary will get $1m payout from the insurance company and $220,928.29 from his investment.

Like you've said i think I will just do term policy say 20 or 25years. And put funds in a mutual funds rather than concentrate investment in one insurance product.

Ivari/WFG are the products pushed by immigrants for immigrants. I personally prefer buying from insurance companies owned by the big banks because they have a reputation to protect, have a larger pool of fund and a $1m payout will not shake them as much as a smaller company that will start looking for excuses not to pay.

It is not a black and white issue as you are making it sound. The government brings in people based on the qualifications and experiences they said they have and whether they really have that skills they claim will be tested by employers once they arrive.
A lot of immigrants parading excellent resumes claiming years of experience may not be actually as good as they claim ooo. Some claim years of experience but can't pass intermediate level coding tests.
I used to think probation was mere formality, once you get a job, you no get wahala again. I didn't know it was a serious issue. Last week in my organization, a senior developer was fired after his probation and it was the 3rd time I'm seeing someone asked to go after probation. This developer was making too many mistakes that even entry level developers will likely not make but he claimed to have 7 years experience from his country. At the end, the team lost confidence in him as he was dragging everyone back and they had no choice than to let him go at the end of his probation. When you see him driving uber tomorrow, you will think there is no job but the problem is actually him. My worry is that the hiring manager would probably want to poach someone from a rival company and pay him more money instead of gambling with immigrants whose experience is outside the country cos of this experience

I have referred someone who got an interview but couldn't answer basic questions for someone who claim to have years of experience. At the end, he didn't get the job but he started blaming me for not telling him what the hiring manager will ask, how? Am I the hiring manager? How could you not answer basic questions on something you claimed you did?


If you are not well grounded in your skills and experience, it is going to be difficult, your years of experience count for nothing if you can't demonstrate your skills and capabilities especiallyin the tech space. Interviews are mostly thorough so you may not pass sef especially if it is an intermediate or senior role. So there may be jobs, the question is do you have what it takes to get it?

Python I claimed I'm an expert in on resume, but it's just 3 months crash course we did, bro I did not go, cos I know I will fumble. That's how I knew I wasted $2k on data training and moved to BA.

Their training help a lot, they have testimonies of their student getting jobs. But you hv to put in the work.
The path to follow will be based on what you study [i don't know what GBM is], your research on potential careers you feel you can do very well and the one that have good job prospects i belive.

1. Nobody lured anybody to come to Canada. As a professional looking to relocate to another country, you must research, research, research. That includes talking to people on the ground that went ahead of you. You must find out the realities about getting into your target profession and develop your plan of how to get there. You must also be willing to reinvent yourself and choose a new path if your current path does not appear to lead to your preferred destination. Nobody coming into Canada in 2023/2024 should be surprised about the challenges in the job market or housing. You should have already discovered that through your research.

2. Your network is very critical. It's almost as if you can only grow as much as what you know, And what you know is largely dependent on who is around you. If you land and keep company with those that have given up on their dreams, you will soon give up on your dreams. If you keep the company of those that have big dreams and are constantly focussed on those dreams, you will find that you will readjust your own dreams and make them bigger, and then stay awake at night figuring out how to make it possible.

3. Practice delayed gratification. The best time to suffer and work hard in Canada is when you have just landed. That is the time you still have a lot of fire, but as time goes on, you start adjusting to the reality of the country making it difficult for you to make bold decisions. So if there are licensing exams to write, write them early. If you are choosing a new career path, choose it early.

4. Everything beautiful takes time. Your dream is going to take time. Just stay focused. Stay in your lane and keep building.

Agree with point 1, 1000%. I did my research well while chasing IELTS, waiting for PR, researching cities to settle, job market all. Immediately I got PR, I began applying for jobs, all manner of jobs, I did 5 interviews in Nigeria before I arrived & got a job [one of the five I did interview for in Nigeria] two months after I arrived. Within that two months of arrival to Canada, I applied and did several interviews. I began networking with people, the church community has been a blessing for me. I realised there are lot of opportunities for upward mobility, was it easy juggling current job and applying for more jobs? No. They say pivot to IT to make 6 figure, bro, I did Scrum, I did Data Analysis, I did Business analysis all with black tech, lol. I was about starting Cybersecurity governance before I got something better. All these training na time, energy and money going o, Saturday & Sunday training training training, lol but we thank God. Nothing is easy, absolutely nothing. I know a frnd who did interview with govt 22 times and he did not give up. He just got a role now and is resuming this month 25th and moving from Saskatchewan to Alberta. Imagine if he gave up on the 10th attempt. No giving up mehn.

I realized that like you said, if you are unfortunate when you arrive and meet people complaining about everything, if you don't leave that circle, u will be stuck with them at that level they are. When I was saving to buy my first house in one year, someone came and told me why I dey rush, say I should take life easy and enjoy and buy vacation plan to Cacun and flex the life of my head. I thank my God that not only did I not listen to this person, but few months later someone shared testimony with me say that year he bought three houses. I'm like, I'm hoping to get just one & relax the life of my head someone is buying 3 in one year. My vision changed, my goals changed. I had to put my head into my job as a credit mortgage analyst and study the nuances of real estate to be able to apply it for myself. I was looking for another job outside banking and met people working in govt, they gave me insight as well, I choose to concentrate only in applying for govt role after spending all that money and time and energy doing all those IT related courses. If u fall into the wrong clique, e go hard small.

Look at my example above, I was working na, I could afford to take my family for vacation to Mexico, but no, I told my wife this our first three years make we hustle am, write exam we fit write, do investment we fit do. I remember entering Hyundai dealership, as soon as they did credit check they offer me 2023 Hyundai Sonata, 0 downpayment, small biweekly payment, I looked at it, it was a cool deal. Worst case scenario my kid ccb will pay the biweekly with no issues. I was not with my ID so I couldn't conclude that day, which was on a Friday, we were to continue on Monday. On Sunday I just told my pastor in passing say I dey bring my brand new ride for prayer on Monday. That day he opened my eye! Delayed gratification. I had the job, the means of paying, I had just bought my first house, I needed the 2023 ride to top it off. I bless God for the revelation. Dealership call me tire. I did not go back to them, manager admin, finance they were all calling me that the car is ready for pickup. For where, I went to Facebook and bought a 10 year old car, a 2014 Hyundai Tucson which I still drive today and paid cash, no finance. Time to buy latest car go come, time to vacation abroad go come, make we grow and build first, at least this first three years before citizenship.

I agree with point 4, 100,000%. Keep building, working hard, have a vision, write it down so he that read it will run with it. God makes all things possible in his own time, i acknowledge that not everyone may run fast, I never look down on anyone, I help in my spare time people arrange their resume and coach for interview, by God's grace I have 4 people I have coached who have good jobs today, one sef dey earn pass me for govt, glory to God.
