PoliticsEdo Begins Gratuity Payments After 12-Year Delay by Slytiger(op): 8:46pm On Apr 07, 2025
Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has approved the payment of gratuities owed to pensioners since 2012, a move many say will address the long-standing plight of retired civil servants in the state.

In a statement on Monday by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the state government has commenced the disbursement of N1 billion as the first batch of payments, fulfilling a commitment to clear the backlog inherited from previous administrations.

Okpebholo emphasised his administration’s resolve to prioritise the welfare of retired civil servants who have dedicated their years of service to the state.

The statement added, “For over a decade, many of our retirees have suffered due to the non-payment of their gratuities. This administration is putting an end to that hardship.

“I have approved the release of N1 billion for the first phase of payments, and we will not rest until all outstanding entitlements are cleared.”

The governor reiterated that his administration is committed to restoring the dignity of pensioners by ensuring that they receive their due benefits without further delay.

“We recognise the sacrifices made by our retirees, and it is unacceptable that they have had to wait this long for what is rightfully theirs.

“Our administration will not only clear these arrears but will also put measures in place to ensure such delays do not happen in the future,” Okpebholo stated.

He reaffirmed that his administration’s goal is to clear all outstanding gratuities in phases, ensuring that retirees enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The governor further assured that the disbursement process would be transparent and fair, with pensioners receiving payments in batches based on a structured verification process.

“This is just the beginning. We will not abandon our pensioners. We are determined to ensure that those who served Edo State diligently are treated with the respect and care they deserve,” the governor said.

PoliticsLP Crisis: Abure-Led NEC Threatens To Sanction Gov Otti, Peter Obi by Slytiger(op): 5:39pm On Apr 07, 2025
The Comrade Julius Abure-led National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Labour Party (LP), has threatened to sanction the Abia State Governor, Alex Oti, should he go ahead with the planned “illegal” stakeholders meeting, scheduled to hold on Wednesday, April 9th, 2025.

It also warned the party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, against any conduct or utterance which promote disunity within the party.

The party leadership said it would no longer take kindly to anti-party activities from any member “no matter how highly placed.”

In the same vein, the LP NEC also announced the sack of Hon. Afam Ogene from his position as leader of the party’s caucus in the House of Representatives. In his place, NEC appointed Barr. Ben Eternabene as the new leader.

These derisions were contained in a Communique read by the Party’s National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk, at the end of a NEC meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat, In Abuja, on Monday.

Farouk said, “NEC in session in the exercise of its duties, hereby caution the former presidential candidate of our great party not to participate in any action capable of undermining the peace unity, and integrity of the party as the NEC will not hesitate to issue a stiffer penalty if found culpable.”

The party’s NEC also expressed satisfaction with the resent ruling of the Supreme Court affirming the Supremacy of the party in determining its leadership.

It further stressed that at no point within the Supreme Court judgement did it sack Julius Abure as National Chairman.

Farouk further said, “Accordingly, NEC in session reaffirmed the Nnewi National Convention held on the 27th of March 2024 that produced the current National Working Committee (NWC) members under the chairmanship of Barrister Julius Abure.

“NEC in session condemn in strong terms the activities of the Caretaker Committee illegally established by Alex Otti and Peter Obi in a so-called Stakeholders meeting held on the 4th of September 2024 in Umuahia.

“The Supreme Court admonished party leaders and members of the party to always abide by the constitution of the party.

“NEC noted that Article 14 (4) (B) gives the power to call meetings only to the National Secretary with the approval of the National Chairman.

Accordingly, NEC warned all members to abide by the constitution of the party.”

Speaking specifically about the Abia State Governor, the communique said, “NEC in session notes the various anti-party activities of Gov. Alex Otti, including calling of unauthorized Stakeholders meeting and usurping the powers of NEC.

“He also conducted the LGA Election using another Political Party. The Governor has also intensified his effort to factionalize the party leadership by calling an illegal NEC scheduled to hold on Wednesday.

“The leadership of the Labour Party is also aware of Governor’s plot to cripple our party before moving to another political party where he hopes to contest the 2027 Governorship Election.

“His anti-party activities is unbecoming of a highly respected personality and can no longer be acceptable, NEC stated that it will not hesitate to discipline him in line with Article 19 of the Party’s Constitution.

“NEC in session noted that would not hesitate to discipline any other erring member who violates the party constitution regardless of how big or powerful such individuals may be.

ogene’s removal as LP Caucus leader: “NEC in session reviewed the activities of the House of Representatives Caucus leader, Honourable Victor Adam Ogene and wishes to note as follows:

“That the voice of the current leadership of the party is not being heard in the hallowed lower chambers; that there is a lack of cohesion amongst our members in the House; that the leadership appears to be compromised; and that the ideology and programs of the party are not well represented.

“NEC in session, as a result of the aforementioned decided to relieve Honourable Ogene of that leadership role for dereliction of duty. Consequently, Hon. Barrister Ben Etanabene has been appointed by the NEC in session as the Labour Party’s Caucus Leader in the House of Representatives.”

The NEC subsequently mandated the NWC to communicate the decision to relevant authorities.

It also demanded they Ogene hand over all the party’s properties in his possession, particularly all the financial contributions made so far by other Labour Party lawmakers which are in his possession to the party, and render proper account to the party with immediate effect.

The party vows to go to any length to retrieve all its belongings, including monies that belong to it which Hon. Ogene is holding tight to.

Earlier, in his address of welcome, Abure who chaired the NEC meeting said, “Recent developments within our party, particularly in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s pronouncement on the leadership matter, have necessitated this gathering.

“ Let me begin by extending our profound appreciation to the Supreme Court of Nigeria for its courageous and principled stance in affirming the supremacy of political parties in managing their internal affairs.

“In its judgement concerning the Labour Party, the apex court unequivocally reasserted that leadership disputes arising within a political party remain within the exclusive purview of the party’s constitution and governance structures.

“ Accordingly, the Court declined jurisdiction in the appeal brought by Senator Nenadi Usman, thereby reinforcing the foundational principle of party autonomy.

“It is, however, regrettable that certain actors, most notably Senators Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha, have chosen to misrepresent the ruling, deliberately misleading the public and attempting to manufacture confusion through a purported “Caretaker Committee.”

“Let it be stated categorically: this so-called committee is both unconstitutional and illegitimate.

“Those who convened the meeting in Umuahia lacked the legal authority to do so. Neither holds the office of National Chairman nor National Secretary as required by our party’s constitution.

“The Labour Party held a valid National Convention in 2019, whose tenure was constitutionally due to end in June 2023.

“In response to the extraordinary demands of the 2023 general elections, our NEC, meeting in Asaba in April of that year, authorized a one-year extension, pushing the end of tenure to June 9, 2024.

“In line with this resolution and the constitution of our party, a fresh National Convention was duly convened and held on March 27, 2024, in Nnewi, Anambra State.

“All procedures relating to that Convention were properly executed, and multiple court rulings have validated the legitimacy of the convention.

“Furthermore, our Constitution, specifically Articles 12 and 14 of the amended 2024 edition, clearly outlines the structure and authority of the party’s organs.

“Article 14 vests the power to issue notices for meetings of the National Convention, the NEC, and the National Working Committee (NWC) in the National Secretary, but only with the consultation and approval of the National Chairman.

“All proper procedures were followed in the convening of the March 2024 Convention, and the actions taken were both constitutional and widely endorsed.

“Let it be known across the federation and beyond: there is no vacuum in the leadership of the Labour Party.

“The National Working Committee, under my chairmanship, remains the recognized and legitimate leadership body of our party.

“We shall not cede ground to illegitimate actors or unconstitutional contraptions posing as transition committees.”

Science/TechnologyNigerian, Kunle Olukotun Created First General-Purpose Multi-Core CPU by Slytiger(op): 7:33am On Apr 07, 2025
British-born Nigerian computer scientist, Dr Kunle Olukotun is well-known in the engineering industry for his substantial contributions to the field in the form of tactile inventions and in-depth research.

Olukotun worked as a student to earn a bachelor’s degree from Calvin College in Michigan, then a master’s and PhD in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1987 and 1991 respectively.

The same year he earned his doctorate, Olukotun joined the faculty of Stanford University as the Cadence Design Systems Professor in the School of Engineering and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

While at Stanford, Olukotun became the leader of the Stanford Hydra chip multiprocessor (CMP) research project. The project, described as “a promising way to build a small-scale MP-on-a-chip with a fairly simple design while maintaining excellent performance on a wide variety of applications” allowed for the development of “one of the first chip multiprocessors with support for thread-level speculation (TLS).”

With this groundbreaking experience and prolific research under his belt, Olukotun founded Afara Websystems to develop “high-throughput, low-power multicore processors for server systems”. Afara was acquired by Sun Microsystems which used Olukotun’s previous technological innovations to create the UltraSPARC T1 microprocessor, more commonly known as “Niagara”, a multithreading, multicore CPU1.

Olukotun is now known as the father of the multi-core processor.

His research interests include computer architecture, parallel programming environments and scalable parallel systems, domain-specific languages and high-level compilers.

Kunle Olukotun was elected as a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery in 2006 for his “contributions to multiprocessors on a chip and multi-threaded processor design”. He became a Fellow of the IEEE in 2008.

Olukotun has used several words from his Yoruba heritage in his research. Afara, the name of the company he founded, means “bridge” in the Yoruba language, and he has named his server at Stanford Ogun after the Yoruba god of iron and steel, a play on words since large computers are frequently called big iron.

Olukotun holds 12 US patents. He has published more than 150 scientific papers and written two textbooks.

I understand your frustration, but I think it's important to look at the bigger picture. While you frown upon LGBTQ+ initiatives, it's worth noting that Trump's economic policies and the ongoing trade war are having significant impacts on everyday Americans. These issues often affect people more directly than the cultural debates. The protests may have multiple causes, and focusing solely on one aspect might overlook the broader economic challenges many are facing.
Trump said inflation would reduce from day one and the stocks will keep rising, the opposite is what's happening now.

Foreign AffairsTrump's Tariffs Wipe Out $2.5 Trillion From US Stock Market by Slytiger(op): 9:33pm On Apr 05, 2025
Roughly $2.5 trillion was erased from the S&P 500 Index on Thursday amid worries that President Donald Trump’s sweeping new round of tariffs could plunge the economy into a recession.

The damage was heaviest in companies whose supply chains are most dependent on overseas manufacturing. Apple Inc., which makes the majority of its US-sold devices in China, fell 9.3%. Lululemon Athletica Inc. and Nike Inc., among companies with manufacturing ties to Vietnam, were both down more than 9%. Target Corp. and Dollar Tree Inc., retailers whose stores are filled with products sourced outside of the US, dropped more than 10%.

Few stocks in the US were unscathed as the benchmark notched its biggest decline since June 2020. More than 80% of companies in the S&P 500 dropped, with more than two-thirds sliding at least 2%.

“There’s really not anybody getting spared in absolute terms,” said Garrett Melson, a portfolio strategist at Natixis Investment Managers Solutions. “You’re just wrapped up, today at least, in a broad de-risking, and so it’s kind of just across the board taking chips off the table.”

The breadth and severity of the levies dwarfed those imposed by Trump during his first term, threatening to upend global supply chains, exacerbate an economic slowdown and boost inflation. It also left investors struggling to game out what levies would do to corporate profits.

If Apple, for example, were to absorb the jump in costs as a result of tariffs on China, the iPhone maker’s gross margin could take a hit of as much as 9%, said Citigroup analysts led by Atif Malik.

The plan is equivalent to the largest tax increase since 1968, JPMorgan economist Michael Feroli wrote in a note. It could add as much as 1.5% to prices this year, using the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge, while weighing on personal incomes and consumer spending.

“This impact alone could take the economy perilously close to slipping into recession,” Feroli wrote. “And this is before accounting for the additional hits to gross exports and to investment spending.”

US assets emerged as the biggest losers after the announcement. The S&P 500 fell 4.8%, and a gauge of the dollar slumped. The impact elsewhere was muted in comparison: A broad gauge of Asian stocks fell less than 1% and the Stoxx Europe 600 slid 2.6%, while the euro rose about 1.6% against the dollar.

Semiconductor and industrial companies also took a beating. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index sank 9.9%, with Micron Technology Inc. down 16% and Broadcom Inc. 11%. Caterpillar Inc. and Boeing Co., which get a big chunk of sales from China, dropped at least 8%.

Apple led declines among the Magnificent Seven stocks with roughly $300 billion in market value wiped out. The group, which also includes Tesla, Microsoft, Nvidia, Alphabet, Amazon.com, and Meta Platforms, has been responsible for much of the US stock market’s gains over the last two years.

“We see 5,300 as the near-term target for the S&P 500, but if tariff uncertainty persists or negotiations with trading partners don’t go well, risks of downside through 5,000 become real,” UBS Group AG’s Bhanu Baweja wrote in a note to clients. “The probability of US stocks entering bear market is going higher.”

Igbakeji that he is referring to his companion. When you become a companion to someone, you are coming in as a 2nd person as the person you are accompanying is still number 1. You don't automatically become equal to that number 1.

There is no way they can twist it. Ikeji, ekeji, igbakeji is set in stone as number 2. Oyo yoruba is even one of the easiest to understand when compared some other Yoruba dialects.
