Oreoluwa (Ore) Bukola. MSc, ACA, ACIB, DipIFR. Career growth over money. A couple of years back, I got an offer to work in one of Nigeria’s most prestigious banks and the pay offered was good with a car to go with it but of course, you will sign a bond to remain with the bank for a minimum of 2 years or something like that. I got in and started at the training school. I was there for 4 months and just in the last week while we rounded off in the training school, I got an email from PwC Nigeria with the title ‘Welcome on Board’. I was beyond happy because that has always been my Dad’s dream for me and I just keyed into it. The only issue here was this: the PwC role offered significantly less than the bank job. I didn’t understand it, why should I go with PwC? I took it anyway. Now I know better, the experience, the exposure, the amount of learning is insane, the feeling of pride, that I was doing something important. The training? massive! The whole experience led to all the opportunities I have ever gotten. So, if you are in your early years of career or just starting off, know that the money will come; if you get two offers, go for the one that provides opportunities for your growth and prepares you for the future rather than just focusing on the monetary package. Ps: This is 100% my personal opinion. |
