Ruling party challenges main opposition candidate to debate Chuks Okocha in Abuja Three thousand and seventy three delegates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are expected to convene at the Eagle Square, Abuja, for the party’s national convention, which kicks off this Wednesday, to ratify President Goodluck Jonathan as the presidential candidate of the PDP by popular acclamation. At the PDP convention, the party’s National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, who was appointed last January after the resignation of Bamanga Tukur, will also be ratified by the delegates. Others to be ratified are the National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, and the National Auditor, Wale Adeyanju. Other items on the agenda include the amendment of some relevant portions of the party’s constitution. According to details obtained by THISDAY, a motion would be taken on the ratification and there would be an affirmation election of “yes” and “no”. On the second day of the convention, the 3,073 delegates would vote to ratify the adoption of Jonathan as the sole presidential candidate of the party. Providing more details, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Olisa Metuh, said: “There would be an election in accordance with the presidential primary guidelines of the party. “The presidential primary guidelines state that there would be an election and I can assure you that there would be an election, even if it is 'Yes' and 'No' as stated in the guidelines to ratify the adoption of the president as the consensus presidential candidate of PDP.” On the insistence of Mrs. Duke Abiola that she is still a presidential aspirant, Metuh said: “The truth is that I cannot tell whether she is presidential aspirant or not. Only the national organising secretary can state her status. “I know that there was a time the party was begging her to collect her presidential nomination form, but her lawyers said otherwise and the party could not locate her. “But as long as she has observed the presidential primary guidelines, nobody can stop her. There is a procedure of due process she ought to follow, but I am not aware that she has passed through this process. “The president went through the processes, submitted his form, went through screening, but I am not sure she did so. As I said, only the national organising secretary can speak on her status.” Metuh also said the party was not opposed to any presidential debate between Jonathan and any person that emerges as the presidential candidate of the APC, adding: “Such presidential debate must be issues based on the performance of the present administration, unity and prosperity of the nation. “We welcome the opposition parties to a presidential debate and it must be an issues- based campaign and not a tissue of lies and propaganda.” Metuh pointed out that Jonathan remains the best Nigerian president as records have shown in his performances, citing electoral reforms, agricultural reforms, improved road network and improved standards of living for all Nigerians. According to him, “The president has been able to stabilise the polity by his pan-Nigerian outlook and approach to governance. The stability of our nation has strengthened national unity. “Today, he has been able to give every geo- political zone a sense of belonging in terms of infrastructure development, economic and human capital empowerment. “Besides the visible and concrete infrastructure development in our nation, President Jonathan has been able to demonstrate a deep sense of equanimity in providing leadership in spite of the incendiary remarks by some opposition leaders. “Amidst the recession and economic downturns in most nations of the world, our economy has been stabilised, our unity preserved and our democracy enhanced. “Under President Jonathan, our nation has witnessed remarkable progress and landmark developments in all sectors of Nigerian public life, through his Transformation Agenda. “The administration has revived the comatose railway transportation with some of the rail lines already in operation. Lagos-Kano is already in operation with new coaches providing improved services. “Not only have the nation’s highways improved, ongoing works can be seen in almost all parts of the country. When the Jonathan administration came on board, only 5,000 out of the 35,000 kilometres of federal roads were motorable. Today, the Jonathan government has rehabilitated and reconstructed 20,000 additional kilometres. “The remaining 10,000 kilometres will be completed in the next three years while other new road projects will be executed. “There have been monumental achievements in the agriculture sector, particularly in the distribution of fertiliser, development in the production of rice, cassava and other Nigerian staples. “There are many more other achievements that are there for us to show case. The Nigerian economy is growing at an average rate of 6.5 per cent. The recent rebasing of the Nigerian economy, which makes it the largest in Africa and the 26th largest in the world, with a GDP of $510 billion, is a major achievement by the Jonathan government. “There is no doubt that President Jonathan has simplified the task for us in the forthcoming presidential election. Ours is to give expression to the positive narrative of performance by appealing to the sensibilities of well-meaning Nigerians to ignore the propaganda and salad of lies being served to them by the opposition, and join hands with us to give the president a second term mandate on February 14, 2015. “Our party is therefore proud to present a credible and dependable candidate with an unquestionable character and we urge Nigerians to continue to stand by him as we march to victory in the 2015 general election.” As at press time, security within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had been beefed up, with security agents manning all strategic locations in the city. The police alongside the army had revved up their stop-and-search operations, while the Eagle Square had been decorated with the national and PDP colours. Tags: News , Nigeria , Featuered, PDP |

He was once so powerful...hw time fly. The Ogun State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Sunday said it was not aware of the gubernatorial aspiration of the former speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole. Speaking at the party’s secretariat yesterday, its state Chairman, Mr. Bayo Dayo, said that Bankole was not one of its 11 aspirants contesting in today’s primary election, saying Bankole was yet to purchase the PDP Expression of Interest form. He said the expression form would have formally announced Bankole as an aspirant in the governorship primary election. Dayo said unlike the other governorship aspirants of the party, Bankole had failed to show seriousness about his aspiration to become the party’s standard bearer. He said Bankole had only been looking for a “short cut” to becoming the PDP governorship candidate instead of going through due process. “But we’ll continue to say it that he (Bankole) did not obtain Expression of Interest form from Ogun State. Until that is obtained, I wouldn’t know him as one of our aspirants,” Dayo said. According to him, I’m still saying that I am not aware that Dimeji Bankole is contesting the governorship in Ogun State. The money we are using to run this party is enormous. Some people have been doing that for years. “Somebody cannot just say because he has been to Harvard, Cambridge or Oxford, he’s coming to lead us overnight. It’s not going to happen. So, if you are contesting you must come to the state secretariat and obtained an Expression of Interest form. “Those forms that are given to us by the various aspirants are the forms we are using for all these primaries, congresses we are doing. We do not have special funds for all these things. It is the money contributed by all these aspirants that we are using. The arrangement about Dimeji Bankole, I do not know anything about it.” Bayo alleged that Bankole had since 2011 when he lost his re-election bid into the House of Representatives distanced himself from the party. The state PDP chairman however said that he could not stop any aspirant who had done the right thing from contesting for the tickets of the party. Efforts to get Bankole’s reaction proved abortive. His telephone lines could not be reachable and he did not reply the SMS text sent to him. Source: Short URL : http:// www.osundefender.org/?p=198765 |

Why a PDP gov aspirant wears bulletproof vest to primary A Lagos State governorship aspirant, Mr. Babatunde Gbadamosi, popularly known as BOG, caused a stir at the Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party governorship primary when he arrived the venue in a bulletproof vest. Gbadamosi, while addressing journalists at the venue, said he wore the vest in order to protect himself from being hit by a stray bullet following the violence that erupted earlier in the day. Although the party leadership had said the violence was caused by thugs loyal to the opposition party, Gbadamosi said the real perpetrators of the violence were from within the PDP. Gbadamosi said the violence was part of a plot to intimidate the almost 1,000 delegates that have converged on the venue. He said, “I am wearing the bulletproof vest because I am afraid of being shot at but I am urging all my supporters to come and not be intimidated. “There is fear of intimidation and some people in the party want to intimidate the delegates but we will ensure that everyone will vote fearlessly and as it pleases them.” He said it was unfortunate that the party leadership was supporting an aspirant. He, however said the leaders would have their say while the delegates would have their way. When asked if he was confident of winning, he said, “Would I have paid over N11m to purchase the form if I was not confident?” By Eniola Akinkuotu Source Short URL : http:// www.osundefender.org/?p=198905 |
The most awaited memoir by Baba seem to b out,or wl soon b on sale in d next few days..Baba have ds to say... Former president of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo has insinuated that Patience Jonathan, wife of the president, Deziani Alison-Madueke, Petroleum Minister, Stella Oduah, former Aviation Minister and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Finance Minister are all ‘Presidents’ of Nigeria, noting that Goodluck Jonathan comes behind the quartet and is the weakest of them all. Extracts from the three-volume autobiography of Obasanjo, titled, “My Watch” revealed how critical he is of Jonathan’s administration. “Five presidents in Nigeria, these were his wife, Deziani, Oduah, Ngozi, Goodluck Jonathan and that he was the weakest of the five,” Obasanjo said in ‘My Watch’. Obasanjo also said Jonathan is incapable of governing well because he his selfish, weak-willed, callous and incapable of rising to the challenges of running a complex country like Nigeria. According to SaharaReporters, an attempt by Buruji Kashamu, a senatorial aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun state and a close associate of President Goodluck Jonathan, to stop the publication of a three-volume book by Obasanjo, appears to have failed as the book is set to go into circulation in the coming days. A source close to Obasanjo has confirmed that copies of the former president’s exhaustive autobiography were already available to buyers in print and electronic form. Grab your copy!!! I come across this write up,I feel its nice for d guys to read it though its much but pls I beg of u try nd read so d guys in the house will stop clapping. This was not what I really set out to do. Since I did the piece ‘And she died’, I have been inundated with protests from men. How could I make men look like monsters and women like saints? Women are mean, ask Adam. A few male readers shared their experiences in the hands of daughters of Eve and some of the stories are quite moving. So I went ‘digging’, asking more men ‘we’ have dealt with over the years what they think of women. My research findings were baaaad. Women are bad. Girls are badder. What to do? Publish the evils that women do and how they often catch up with them. That was what I wanted to write about this week. That is one topic I will write as soon as possible. But not today. Today, I’m not really going to hit the men, ahem, at least not like that. Let’s just say I want to draw their attention to some obvious facts they daily ignore. Now, I must confess that this piece was triggered by a text message joke I received from a co-conspirator. Here goes; 11 people were hanging on a rope under a helicopter. There were 10 men and a woman. The rope was not strong enough to carry them all. So they decided that one of them had to leave, otherwise they were all going to fall. They were not able to agree on who that person would be. Until the woman among them gave a touching speech. She said that she would voluntarily let go of the rope because as a woman, she was used to giving up everything for her husband and kids or for men in general. She said she was used to always making sacrifices and getting little or nothing in return. As soon as she finished her speech, all the men started clapping… All the men, of course, dropped to their untimely deaths and she flew away alone in the chopper. Well, what can a woman do? That is the power of a woman, the brand only smart men recognize and ac knowledge. If there had been at least one of those 10 excitable men who could see beyond that woman’s ‘moving’ speech, he would be alive today. But don’t we all know that men don’t do much thinking when they see women they want? In my mind’s eyes, I could see the woman in that joke wearing a very short skirt, no bra and a top with a plunging neckline. How do you reason with a man drooling over ample cleavage? If you scream ‘Praise the Lord’, he won’t shout Halleluyah because he is far away in la-la land. The woman in that joke, I’m sure, also had smooth skin, probably fair skin. All 10 men simply threw their thinking caps in the air or how else do you explain why they all forgot that they did not have third hands and that once they started clapping they were going to drop to their deaths? That is exactly my point. A smart woman can make a man do whatever she wants him to do. We are that powerful. Oh, don’t even try to disprove it. Just save your energy for the next time a woman is delivering a speech and you need all your wits about you to hang on to life instead of clapping your way into an early grave. Of course, I’m the first to admit that there is something comforting about the sight of a woman. We were created like that. Every woman has the right gadgets to comfort a man, make him feel safe, give him life. That is the reason baby boys suck breasts more fervently than baby girls and when you wean him off breasts at 12 months, what does he do? As soon as he is old enough to recognize that there are other breasts apart from mummy’s own, he goes breast- hunting. Poor men, you can’t wean them off breasts. They need to be regularly nourished. Who’s complaining? Don’t forget that this piece is about alerting men to the dangers of their bad wild ways on the one hand and the powers of a woman on the other. No man should delude himself that his woman is powerless. If you doubt my sermon, ask yourself how much you spend on your daughter and compare it with how much your sons cost. Even your little tyke is twisting you round her pink fingers. A smart man works all day, sits on his butt for eight-straight hours trying to seal a deal. He finally gets it in the can, tired but happy. He drives home and sights these half clad daughters of Eve along the road and stops to give one a ride. He convinces himself he’s celebrating his new deal. Before you know it, he is expending more energy and spending money that is not yet in the bank. I see my sisters who have not much to show in terms of source of income living in posh apartments in choice areas of town and driving wonder-on-wheels. Who’s paying? Men who are clapping when they should be holding on firmly to the rope. Well, the girls are having fun and the men are not complaining. I just feel like warning them today. Men should stop thinking that it’s a man’s world. Please, it’s women’s device to keep you clapping. It suits even me to convince men that it’s their world. But it isn’t. My brother summed up this whole clapping- when-you-shouldn’t business when he said ‘men are forever prostrating for their women when the women are not riding them.’ I’m still trying to decode that one. Are the men still clapping? First published December 12, 2009 |
