Politics / Fayemi At 56: Roles He Played In Ekiti And National Politics by sojiboy(m): 11:22am On Feb 01, 2021
Fayemi at 56... Courageous Warrior who chooses his battles carefully
Little wonder Yoruba says, Moja Mosa la un mo akinkanju, Akinkanju to ba Moja, ti o Mosa, iru won lo un bo'Ogun lo (literally, a warrior chooses his battle wisely).

He fought for almost three years before retrieving the mandate freely given to him by Ekiti Kete and was sworn in as Governor on Oct 16, 2010. His days in office throughout the constitutionally approved 4years of stay in office didn't come without different challenges; but he selected his battles and conquered whichever he set out for. Most notable of the battles is his re-election in 2014, where he accepted electoral results and concede defeat to former Governor Ayodele Peter Fayose, despite having the knowledge of the electoral fraud perpetrated without recourse to war in the state.

He left Ekiti State only to be saddled with the management of the presidential primary election of the APC as Chairman and the shadow election which was free and fair produced Buhari as the party’s flag bearer. This didn't come without a fight - for him to compromise electoral results for the then moneybags in APC but his discipline and determination to be an unbiased umpire, carved a niche for him as the very first Nigerian who conducted presidential primaries without rancor within the party. Erelu's husband, Fayemi, came out triumphantly as he was celebrated across the globe for the exceptional record making and breaking. Despite the efforts of powers that be to exempt him from the 2015 Buhari presidential campaign committee, Buhari insisted on Fayemi's inclusion in the campaign team, which made JKF the head of the Strategic and Planning Team of the campaign committee.

Did I forget to tell you that Fayemi was favourably positioned to run as Buhari’s running mate, there was a campaign of calumny against Fayemi by a group led by a notorious Ado man, where he used his pseudo-journo skills to downplay the popularity of Ilufemiloye in Ekiti and Southwest as a whole, but after a very deep negotiation, Fayemi who knew when to and not to fight, gave in to even lesser opinion not because he wasn't eminently qualified but saw the battle to wrestle power from the then Pdp led Govt more important than anything agreed to let go.

After the NOW CALLED ABUJA BOYS, where denied the Vice Presidential ticket, Osinbajo was brought in. This didn't come as easy as thought, because the Abuja boys also fought many underground battles to deny THE CAPO Dei Capi of the same Ticket; but for the bigger war ahead against PDP, they conceded the ticket to him but not to his person. Still Fayemi was in the Strategic and Planning Committee of the election, which President Goodluck Jonathan will never forget anytime soon.

After Buhari's victory in the 2015 election, the battle of who becomes what started and either by choice or by force, Fayemi was the centre of the noise especially from the southwest and Ekiti in particular. Different political names sprang up to be appointed as Minister from the state when Fayemi a former Gov, Chairman Apc presidential primary election and Chairman strategic and planning committee was tactically downplayed by Judas and Spoilers of the State but Buhari being so sure of the stuff the war expert (JKF) is capable of, against all odds appointed Fayemi as Minister for Mines & Steels. Did the Battle end there? NO, did Fayemi despite all the challenges fight back? NO, he conserved his energy for bigger battles; little wonder he won the Ekiti 2018 Apc primary election effortlessly despite being the last contestant to show interest in less than 3 months of the said election. After the primaries, the Chief Strategist made peace with his co-contestants in less than 15 days and got set to wrestle power from the PDP in the State, and the rest is story today. Fayemi was sworn in for the second time as the 3rd democratically elected Governor on the 16th of Oct 2018.

The battle didnt end there, as the legal battle between him and Eleka of PDP lasted for a while. That of Engr. Segun Oni didn't conquer him; local and national politics got his name in almost every politics (local, regional and national). The contest for Nigerian Governors Forum came; Fayemi won the contest unchallenged, as Mallam El-Rufai of Kaduna, who happens to be his close friend stepped down to make Fayemi the NGF Chairman.

The agitation for the creation of Southwest Security Network codenamed "Amotekun" was a fight of point of duty after the NGF Election, where Fayemi talked tough, challenged the presidency and the Nigeria Police Force on the need to protect our region. He didn't shy away from the fact that he had northern friends who saw the creation of Amotekun as a threat to their kinsmen in the southwest, as much as nothing will kill the lofty dream of Amotekun. Fayemi thus reassured the safety of law abiding citizens irrespective of the tribe, colour, language or even nationality. Akeredolu despite preparing to slug out his second term ambition as Ondo state Govenor, gave all his best; likewise Makinde the only PDP governor in southwest.

Fayemi as a warrior took the battle ground to Ondo state where his long time friend Akeredolu contested his second term, despite all threats from opposition both within and outside APC family, Fayemi with the support of other of his APC colleagues and the overwhelming votes of the masses, secured victory for Aketi as second term Govenor of the Sunshine state. I deliberately skipped the APC Party Chairmanship, as though Oshiomole keeps fingering Fayemi as one of the Governors who wanted him to fall, Fayemi had severally denied his involvement in Oshiomole's plight, but for the fact that Oshiomole lost out and he claimed Fayemi is the arrowhead, shall we not call him a warrior?

Fayemi was among many, who fought for Nigeria's democracy through the creation of "Radio Kudirat" to amplify the voice of the voiceless, and many of these stories are flying around the internet, but my concentration is the latest.

At 56, Fayemi has fought battles selectively and you will agree with me that his name has been dragged into the 2023 Presidential election by many political analysts as he is seen to be qualified for the number one political office of the country. As much as I am not in any position to determine whether he should contest or not, since the world has seen the potential in him, I will advise the governor of Ekiti State with the popular German writer- Bertolt Brecht's quote, which says "If you fight, you might win; if you don’t, you have already lost." But the, the victory of Progressives in the Ekiti 2022 elections will determine how easy 2023 pendulum will swing in favour of Dr. John Kayode Fayemi.

MINMUM WAGE: EKITI GOVERNMENT, LABOUR REACH AGREEMENT ON CONSEQUENTIAL ADJUSTMENT FOR SENIOR WORKERS

The Government of Ekiti State has signed an agreement with Organized Labour on the implementation of minimum wage and consequential adjustment for workers in core civil service and Local Government Service as well as Judiciary and Health workers in the state.

The implementation of the consequential adjustment commences in January, 2021.

The new development is a product of a series of meetings between labour leaders and government negotiation team as well as meetings with the state Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi at the tail end of last year.

In the new agreement which was jointly signed by the government negotiation team and labour leaders in the state on Tuesday evening, it was agreed that the salaries of officers in the civil service be adjusted.

Adjustment for GL13-17 will be implemented by the government based on the recommendation of the Economic Review Committee which will comprise labour and government representatives as allocation improves, while implementation for officers on GL 07-12 will commerce by January 2021.
Workers on Grade level 01 to 06 have been enjoying the new minimum wage since October 2019.

It was also agreed that government would not retrench, victimize or intimidate any worker as a result of the implementation and no labour leader would be penalized or sanctioned over roles played in the course of the negotiations.

“It was jointly signed that this agreement has brought to an end the agitation on minimum wage and consequential adjustment for officers on GL 01-12 and shall be implemented for officers on GL13 and above without prejudice”, the document stated.

The Head of Service, Mrs 'Peju Babafemi, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Oluyemi Esan and Permanent Secretary, Office of Establishments and Service Matters, Mr Bayo Opeyemi, signed on behalf of government.

The Chairman Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Kayode Fatomiluyi, Secretary, Comrade Gbenga Olowoyo; Chairman NLC, Comrade Kolapo Olatunde, NLC Secretary, Comrade Akinyemi Taiwo; Chairman Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Sola Adegun; and Secretary, Comrade Lawrence Kulogun, signed on behalf of Labour.

The Head of Service, Mrs 'Peju Babafemi expressed profound gratitude to the Government for creating a conductive and peaceful environment for Ekiti Workers.

She affirmed that Ekiti is blessed with cerebral, hardworking and diligent officers in the public service who are ready to deliver on the agenda of government to the people of the state.

"I want to assure the workers that the administration of Governor Kayode Fayemi is committed to their wellbeing. On this note, I urge all our workers to continue to put in their best", she added.

The Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Kayode Fatomiluyi, speaking on behalf of Labour, said the journey towards signing the agreement was quite hectic and involved serious brainstorming sessions. He added however, that he was happy that both government and labour have come to a conclusion.

He stressed further, that "the organized labour have confidence in our amiable Governor that he walks his talk and we want to believe that what we have signed (today) is in the best interest of our teaming members".

It will be recalled that the negotiation meeting was put on hold in March 2020, following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to that, Government had commenced the implementation of the minimum wage for the junior officers in October 2019. Governor Fayemi however directed that negotiations should resume in November 2020, which led to the signing of the agreement on Tuesday.

Long Journey and side Attractions to 2023

The journey to 2023 has commenced despite the fact that we still have more than 1100 days ahead of us. But just like Ekiti State Govenor, Dr Kayode Fayemi earlier prayed in one of his interviews on Channels TV, “may God keep us all till then”.

Different intrigues have started playing out ahead of 2023, starting from Arewa lecture in Kaduna state where Fayemi was a guest speaker, and in the just concluded NANS election where Fayemi’s name was mentioned more than the contestants, and then later to the recent interview on Channels TV.

These and many more of Fayemi's activities have generated so many opinions about the governor in both the Northern and Southern part of the country. And believe me, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

The question as to who qualifies for the number one office in the country. Section 131 of the 1999 constitution states that a person may be qualified for election of the office of the president if:

1. They are a citizen of Nigeria by birth;
2. They have attained the age of thirty five years;
3. They are a member of a political party and are sponsored by that political party;
4. They have been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.

From the foregoing, anybody who meets these conditions is a potential aspirant for the position of president.
In terms of preparedness for the 2023 polls, both PDP and APC have been working around the word "Zoning", which both have said is not a written arrangement in their Constitutions but it must be respected. While the PDP is looking towards the north in desperation to get back the lost glory of their party, the APC is looking at the fairness of power rotation as Buhari, a Northerner, is the first president the party had produced. Majority of leaders of the party have however been clamouring for power to shift to the South.

South? Yes South! Which part of the South? Considering its cordial relationship with the North, population and political sagacity, Southwest is the most favourable geopolitical zone in the contest to come, little wonder then that some have started with South West Agenda.

South West Nigeria is one of the geopolitical zones of Nigeria, consisting of Ekiti, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Osun and Oyo states.
It is majorly a Yoruba speaking area, although there are different dialects even within the same state (Wikipedia). Of the Six states, Ogun state, on the one hand, has been majorly favoured having produced President, Vice President and Speaker of the House of Representatives while on the other hand, the best Ekiti has ever produced is the NGF Chairman in person of Dr Kayode Fayemi.

While Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s name is being peddled around for the 2023 polls by his followers, the Jagaban of Borgu has never publicly shown or denied interest in the said office. The mention of Fayemi has sent shivers into some camps as the Chairman of the Governors Forum keeps taking notable steps that have attracted both knocks and accolades. Notwithstanding, he is qualified for the position of president come 2023.

Nigeria being a very religious country has seen the Yoruba Christians sending signals for their turn for the top seat, which according to some analysts is the best for APC, as majority of the Northerners are Muslims. If any South Westerner is to be picked today, religion would be a major factor and a Christian will be most favourable. Asiwaju is a Muslim but he could be converted to Christianity overnight to make the ticket an easy goal for him. If Fayemi, a catholic eventually shows interest, he would enjoy the overwhelming support from the North because it will also pave way for a Muslim Vice President which the northerners are most likely going to favour.

Yesterday some notable Ekiti men took the very bold decision of launching South West Agenda, another moves that is worthy of applaud and as well has kept Ekiti in limelight of political discourse. While some sees it as an act of betrayal of their origin, some others see it as a high level of political consciousness in Ekiti.

For no reason will any Yoruba man support anything outside theirs which will make PDP a great loser; the two leading names in APC are from Ekiti and Lagos state (Southwest, Nigeria), whosoever the permutations favours as a Yoruba man gets my support. If today Kayode Fayemi declares to contest, I will never use left hand to describe my father's house. As an Ijero man, Fayemi will get my backing and so will it be for other Ekiti Indigenes who launched SWAGA yesterday. As the coast becomes clearer by the day, I pray that more Yoruba men indicate interest; this will make the other geopolitical zones know that we are very much ready for the contest and nobody from the zone has the exclusive incontestable right to the APC Presidential ticket.

FAYEMI MOURNS HARRY AKANDE'S DEATH

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has commiserated with the family of the late business mogul and former Presidential aspirant, Chief Harry Akande, who passed on Saturday, aged 77.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Yinka Oyebode, the Governor described Akande's death as an unfortunate and irreparable loss not only to members of his family and the good people of Oyo State but to the nation at large.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors' Forum said the late Akande worked his way to the top, built a solid business empire and became influential across the globe through dint of hard work, brilliance and diligence.

Fayemi said the Ibadan-born Billionaire ventured into the Nigerian politics with the intent of using politics as a tool for social and economic change, but could not achieve his dreams of ruling the country as a presidential hopeful on the platform of the then All Nigerian Peoples Party (ANPP).

The Governor however said that Chief Harry Akande played politics without bitterness because his decision to participate in politics was to deepen democracy and create a system that caters for the masses and not for self-aggrandisement or wealth acquisition.

Recalling his first meeting with the late politician in England during the struggle for the revalidation of the June 12 presidential election won by the late Chief M.K.O Abiola, Fayemi said the late Harry Akande was a great supporter of the struggle.

"The news of Chief Akande's death came as a shock. He was indeed a great man, and a refined politician who envisioned a system that would cater for the Nigerian masses. There's no doubt that he had a great reputation across the globe as a successful businessman and a peace-loving politician.

“I first met Chief Akande in the heat of the June 12 struggle in England. He was very committed to Chief Abiola’s electoral victory and supported wholeheartedly those of us at the forefront of the struggle to respect the sanctity of that election and rid Nigeria of militarydictatorship.

"This is a great loss not only to his family and the people of Ibadan, but the country as a whole. We are however consoled by the fact he lived a good life, impacted many lives and left a good name and legacy.

"It is my prayer that the Lord will grant him eternal rest and give his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. On behalf of the Government and people of Ekiti State, I commiserate with the Government and people of Oyo State", the Governor said.

FAYEMI RAISES PANEL ON SARS’ BRUTALITY, RIGHT ABUSES
…..TO REVISIT CREATION OF LCDAs

The Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi has revealed that his administration is taking steps to ensure justice for victims of police brutality in the state through the setting up a Panel of Enquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS and Related Abuses in the state.

He equally unfolded plan by his administration to revisit the creation of the Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) to develop the grassroots and bring governance closer to the people promising to forward a bill to that effect for immediate consideration.

Dr. Fayemi spoke on Friday while presenting the State of the State Address on the floor of the State House of Assembly, Ado-Ekiti before the state legislators and other distinguished personalities as part of activities marking his two years in office.

The State of the State Address was attended by the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, the First Lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; Houses of Representatives member, Hon. Femi Bamisile, members of the State Executive Council and traditional rulers led by the Chairman of the State Council of Obas/Alawe of Ilawe Ekiti, Oba Adebanji Alabi and community leaders.

Governor Fayemi, who had earlier in the morning addressed a large crowd of ENDSARS protesters at the Fajuyi area of Ado-Ekiti, said his administration was setting up a panel to look into cases of human rights abuses and brutality by the disbanded squad.

He said: "In line with the recommendation of the National Economic Council, I have today constituted a Panel of Enquiry and Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses in the State.

"The panel will look at all verifiable cases of SARS brutality and fatality and ensure offending SARS officers are identified and prosecuted appropriately while victims or their families are duly compensated.

"Membership of the panel will include a retired judge of the State High Court as Chairperson, and representation from Civil Society Organisations, including youth groups.
"The Honourable Attorney-General will publish additional details, including giving information on how our citizens can access the panel.

“My administration will continue to participate actively in this national dialogue; we have suggested that consideration should be given to the merit of decentralizing policing in Nigeria. We have also proposed that the Nigerian police council should be enshrined in the constitution of Nigeria to be more active and regular in its oversight function of policing.
“Irrespective of our diverse condition however, I believe what we have in common is our collective desire for a police institution that works in the interest of all Nigerians, irrespective of age, gender, economic status or any other difference. Our own people should not be criminalized or stigmatized simply on account of what they wear, the car they drive or the gadget they carry.”, he added.

Addressing the agitation for a revisit of the Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) that was dissolved by the immediate past administration, Governor Fayemi said his administration, having reviewed the development has decided to revisit the issue and would be forwarding a Bill to the Assembly for consideration.

According to him, "After extensive consultations, my administration has decided to revisit the creation of Local Government Development Areas.

"I have therefore directed the Honourable Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice to re-present a Bill for the establishment of Local Government Development Areas in Ekiti State for the immediate consideration of the State Executive Council and subsequently for Legislative scrutiny.

"May I use this opportunity to appeal to this House to give the Bill the urgent consideration that it deserves, the Governor said, with a thunderous applause form the audience.
Presenting the scorecard of his administration in the last two years backed with relevant statistics, the Governor said appreciable progress had been made in the execution of life changing policies and projects for the benefit of Ekiti people despite the prevailing economic challenges.

The Governor noted that the five pillars of governance which include Agriculture and Rural Development, Governance, Infrastructure and Industrial Development, Knowledge Economy and Social Investments were being diligently pursued to improve the standard of living of the people.

He noted that the first year in office was used to lay a solid foundation for the legacy projects which are now in various stages of completion, adding however, that the economic challenges brought about by COVID-19 pandemic led to the review of the 2020 Budget.

The Governor said: "Despite the challenges brought on by COVID-19 pandemic, we have remained committed to completing all unfinished projects by previous administrations and following through with those we initiated.

"We have done this to demonstrate that regardless of our partisan leanings, Ekiti State remains our common heritage, and we must do all we can to lay a foundation for sustainable development.

"Today, I address you with restrained joy but a strong conviction that despite the challenges we have faced in the past year, we are making visible progress and steady strides towards our goals for Ekiti.

"I am happy to report back that despite the economic realities of the year under review, we are making remarkable progress with our Agro-Cargo Airport project.

"All the necessary documents are being perfected and work is ongoing at the site. Ekiti Agro-Cargo Airport remains a priority for us and we project that it would be completed in record time before the end of my tenure."

The Governor disclosed that his administration will shortly present a bill to the Assembly with a view to ensuring that it becomes mandatory for all successive governments to present an annual State of the State address for the consideration of the State House of Assembly.
Earlier, the Speaker of the Ekiti House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye, said the achievements recorded by the Fayemi administration in two years "are too visible to be ignored even by the morbid critics."

The Speaker lauded the Governor for consistently delivering good governance to the people despite the shortfall in the allocation coming from the Federation Account and putting the state on the path of sustainable development.

He promised the commitment of the Assembly to drive a legislative agenda that would resonate with the five pillar agenda of the Fayemi administration

Fayemi's Wife reiterates government’s commitment to curb Gender Based-Violence

The First Lady of E kiti State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, has reiterated the Governor Kayode Fayemi led- administration's commitment to continue putting in place legal and policy frameworks that would end female genital mutilation (FGM) and other Gender Based Violence practices in the state.

The Governor’s wife stated this during an advocacy meeting with the State's GBV management committee in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday.

The meeting was organized by Care for Population and Reproductive Health (CPRH), an NGO working with Ekiti State Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) survivors.
Mrs. Fayemi said Ekiti had all it takes to fight GBV, stressing that the state has in place laws to curb gender based violence. These, according to her, include the Comprehensive GBV laws which is the first of such policy in the country as well as the whistle blower policy for FGM.

"Part of the provisions made for GBV victims include treatment, care and protection at the sexual referral centre and the provision of other intervention through the help of Office of the SDGs. We now have other services, such as comprehensive support services, Permanent Shelter for victims in distress, Community engagements (ownership), Coordinating mechanism and the FGM task force who apprehend perpetrators.", Mrs Fayemi said.

Speaking on the need for continued education on the menace, she said: "We need to educate our people. They need to be taught on how to apply the law into their lives, all I want to see is that the work gets done."

Mrs Fayemi said Obinrin Kete women empowerment programme will be launched soon, adding that the platform will provide a platform where women will be empowered to do some businesses to support themselves. She cited an example of the case of Mama Jolaade Osho from Ikere who was being called many bad names before her office took over her case and eventually she died with a sweet song in her mouth.

The Director of the Care for Population and Reproductive Health (CPRH), Prof. Oladosu Ogengbede in his goodwill messages said “Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) can be prevented through the hard work of the committee to save the generation unborn. Let us see how we can impact positively.

He also promised to partner with the First Lady and the State Ministry of Women Affairs to end GBV/FGM in the state.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Alhaja Mariam Odunlade, in her remarks thanked the First Lady for her great efforts in gender advocacy in Ekiti State.
She said the state has recorded the highest legislation by way of prohibiting all forms of gender and harmful practices such as the female genital mutilation, Sexual Assault and all violence against women and children which forms the reason for the establishment of sexual assault referral centre (SARC) in Ekiti State.

FAYEMI CONGRATULATES AKEREDOLU ON RE-ELECTION

….says Ondo electoral victory a wake-up call for APC

The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi has congratulated Ondo State Governor, Mr Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) on his re-election for a second term in office.

Governor Fayemi in a statement in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, said Akeredolu’s electoral victory was an attestation to the fact the electorate would always reward a performing leader and administration with their votes.

Dr Fayemi also commended the people of Ondo State for their peaceful conduct at the poll, a situation which he said greatly reduced the pre-election tension in the state in addition to crippling the antics of purveyors of violence.

The Ekiti State Governor also congratulated the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for proper coordination. He also lauded the leaders of the party in Ondo State for closing ranks ahead of the election and working together to achieve victory for the party.

The Ondo State experience, he says, should be a wake- up call for the party that effective coordination and sincerity of purpose are necessary for electoral victory.

“It is a new day in Ondo State. Congratulations to my brother Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and a bigger congratulation to the APC members in the state. The biggest applause, however, goes to the good people of Ondo State for ensuring the election was held in an atmosphere devoid of rancour, violence and blood-letting as many had predicted.

“It is heart-warming to see the electorate reward Governor Akeredolu’s good performance in terms of industrialisation and infrastructure development of the state among others with electoral victory.

“To whom much is given, much should be expected. I have no doubt that the good people of Ondo State would witness a greater level of socio-economic, industrial and infrastructure development in Governor Akeredolu’s second term.
Governor Fayemi urged the APC leadership to build on the electoral success in Ondo State for future elections.

“It is a wake-up call that with a laser beam focus, proper planning, unity and sincerity of purpose, elections are almost always winnable. It is hoped that the various bye elections coming up at the end of the month will benefit from this renewed vigour and focus in our party”, Dr Fayemi added.

World Teachers’ Day: Fayemi commends teachers for contributions to nation building

Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has described teachers as major stakeholders in the drive towards nation building, adding that government policies in education sector cannot succeed without the unflinching support and cooperation of teachers.

Dr Fayemi stated this at the 2020 World Teacher’s Day celebration, in Ado-Ekiti on Monday. He urged the teachers to brace up for the tasks of rebuilding the school system which had been under lockdown in the last six months.

The Governor spoke just as the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Samuel Olugbesan and Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) Mr Sola Adigun, in separate presentations, commended the Governor for his giant strides in the education sector.

They cited introduction of free and compulsory education; renovation of schools; appointment of three tutors general among the secondary school principals; establishment of four new secondary schools to address the challenge of overcrowding in some schools and implementation of 2015 promotion with financial benefits, car and housing loans for secondary school teachers as part of the goodies the teachers had received from the government.

Governor Fayemi in his keynote address at the event enjoined teachers to maintain the hard work for which they were known in order to improve on the remarkable performance of students in their external examinations and other related academic activities as they are gradually returning to school.

He applauded the steadfastness and dedication of the entire teachers in the State, both in the public and private schools many of whom could not attend the ceremony which was held in line with Covid-19 safety protocols that disallow large gatherings.

In attendance at the event were the Deputy Governor, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi, Wife of Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Funminiyi Afuye; Commissioner for Education, Dr Olabimpe Aderiye; members of the state executive council and House of Assembly as well as other stakeholders in the education sector.

Speaking on welfare of teachers, Dr Fayemi who said there were other developmental projects begging for attention, however promised that government would continue to ensure payment of salaries as well as make more efforts to pay outstanding ones as economy improves.

The Governor reinstated his administration’s commitment to the welfare of teachers as well as students, said the outbreak of the coronavirus earlier in the year was responsible for the slight delay in the issuance of letters of employment to newly recruited teachers in the state. He however said that applicants that had already been interviewed would collect their letters soon.

Dr Fayemi also promised to look into the various demands of the teachers which include effecting promotion of teachers from 2015 to 2018; outstanding salaries of primary and secondary school teachers owed by the immediate past administration as well as making teachers advance to GL17.

He alerted the teachers to the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic was still prevalent, urging them to ensure proper use of the facilities provided for them in order to keep the pandemic out of the school system and from Ekiti state.

While ascertaining that teachers has important role to play in the development of the society for improved future, the Governor urged the teachers to see their calling as one to assist in the personal and continual development of the learners.

He reiterated the commitment of his administration to pursue compulsory, functional, basic and free education to ensure that all school age children are in school in accordance with the mandate of the National Policy on Education Law.
Expressing his appreciation to the teachers, Dr Fayemi said,
“I Also commend you all for your immense contributions to nation building. I know quite well that policies in education sector cannot succeed without the unflinching support and cooperation of teachers. It will not be an overstatement for me to say that all of us have enjoyed the mentorship and benefitted immensely from the services of a teacher to attain our present status in life.

“In light of this, our government recognizes critical roles of teachers in the development of the education sector in Ekiti state. We will keep putting every measure in place towards empowering teachers, improving and professionalizing teaching through the activities of the Teaching Service Commission and the State Universal Basic Education Board.

“We are not unmindful of the importance of quality education to manage the socio-political and economic challenges being encountered by the society. A good and dutiful teacher is not just a person who teaches academic lessons, rather, he is the one who mentors and helps the learner in each sphere of his life.

Highlight of the event was the presentation of checks of N400,000 each to the best teachers in the primary and secondary school categories, among other prizes and promises to the teachers. The beneficiaries are Mr Abiodun Olukayode of AUD Pilot Nursery and Primary School, Ado Ekiti and Mr Owoeye Femi Samuel of St. Augustine Comprehensive High School, Oye Ekiti.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Education and Technology, Dr Olabimpe Aderiye expressed her appreciation to the governor for his efforts at repositioning the sector and ensuring welfare of teachers in the state.

FAYEMI APPROVES CONVERSION, INTER-CADRE TRANSFER FOR 603 CIVIL SERVANTS

The Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi, has approved the conversion and inter-cadre transfer of 603 officers in the State Civil Service.

The conversion and inter-cadre transfer were granted for the officers who obtained approved study leave to undertake courses of study in higher institutions.

The last time a major conversion and inter-cadre transfer were carried out by the State Civil Service Commission was in 2012 during Governor Fayemi’s first term in office.

Governor Fayemi said the approval was in line with the administration’s commitment to excellent service delivery through highly motivated work force, adding that the civil service remains a strategic partner in the quest for an all-round development of the state through effective implementation of the administration’s five -pillar development agenda.

He urged the beneficiaries not to relent on their oars in their quest for personal and professional development, assuring that his administration is committed to the transformation agenda of the state civil service.

The Head of Service, Mrs. Peju Babafemi, who disclosed the new development in her office, in Ado-Ekiti on Wednesday, said the Governor’s approval for the conversion/advancement was a reflection of his commitment to the welfare of workers and their capacity building.

Mrs Babafemi commended the Governor for his positive disposition to the enhancement of the career of workers in the State and advised workers to continue to give their best in terms of effective service delivery.

The Head of Service directed that the 387 officers in the senior category and 216 officers in the junior category would undergo due process in line with the extant rules before letters are issued to them by the Civil Service Commission and the Office of Establishments and Service Matters.

GOVERNOR FAYEMI' S PURPORTED SUSPENSION: A JOKE TAKEN TOO FAR

In his reaction to the purported suspension of Governor Kayode Fayemi by an unknown group, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Yinka Oyebode, described it as a joke taken too far.

Oyebode said the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a party is governed by laws, adding that members of the group cannot hide under their recent suspension to announce a dubious suspension they lack the locus to handle.

While one would have dismissed their claims as another failed attempt to polarise the party in the state, it is also important to put it on record that the action of the group smacks of criminal impersonation as none of those who signed the purported suspension letter were executive members of the party at ward, Local government or state level.

The action is but a joke taken too far as they never had such power they want to arrogate to themselves while they were members of the party, much less now that they have been suspended.

Governor Fayemi however remains unperturbed by this antics of suspended members.

Well meaning members of the public as well as members of APC are urged to disregard the news of the purported suspension as it only exists in the imagination of members of the group.

Dr Kayode Fayemi remains the indisputable leader of the APC in Ekiti State.

Politics / Fayemi: Online Campaign Poster Not Authorised By Me by sojiboy(m): 7:12pm On Aug 19, 2020
PRESS RELEASE

ONLINE CAMPAIGN POSTER NOT AUTHORISED BY GOV FAYEMI

The attention of the Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has been drawn to news reports of a campaign poster being purportedly circulated on social media by the Chairman of Ikere Local Government Council, Mr Femi Ayodele.

Mr Ayodele is reported to be canvassing support for Dr Fayemi for the 2023 presidential election through the poster which was designed with the logo of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

However, mindful of the possible interpretation such an unauthorised act could be given by well meaning members of the public, we consider it important to state as follows:

Dr Fayemi does not have any knowledge of the campaign poster neither did he authorise Mr Ayodele or any person or group of persons to start a campaign on his behalf.

As a matter of fact, Mr Ayodele does not and cannot speak for the Governor on any matter, be it policy, administrative or political.

Governor Fayemi has reiterated over and over that he has a four-year mandate as Governor of Ekiti State and he is focused on actualising his promises to the people of the state through pragmatic leadership and systemic implementation of his administration’s five pillars of development.

This also serves as a note of caution to political appointees, government functionaries, political associates and groups to operate within the ambit of decency and steer clear of actions that are capable of distracting the government, the party and the Governor.

Politics / When Silence Is Golden _by Ashifatu Kamarudeen_ by sojiboy(m): 6:19am On Aug 19, 2020
*WHEN SILENCE IS GOLDEN*
_By Ashifatu Kamarudeen_

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt. -Unknown.

I am a practising Muslim, but I have adequate understanding of the Bible and I am aware of the verse that says: Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.

In the biblical version one is thought wise if one remains silent, but in the earlier quote by an "unknown," the word “wise” is not used. Remaining silent simply allows one to avoid the fate of being thought a fool or stupid.

The recent diatribe credited to the immediate past Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, against the Director General of the Progressive Governors Forum, Dr. Salihu Lukman, seems to tally with these two analogies.

I must confess here that I am neither a good friend nor a strong admirer of either Comrade Oshiomhole or Dr. Lukman. I have known both of them as firebrands and close allies in the labour union activity days. Not for once did Lukman come to me as a pushover or numbskull without a mind of his own, who could easily be manipulated by anyone, not even by Oshiomhole himself.

Dr. Lukman's radical nature is legendary. He is an activist per excellence and, as I earlier hinted, had been a close associate of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole all along. This perhaps explains his active participation in student unionism in the late 1980s, resulting in his becoming the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, in 1988/1989.

After his NYSC scheme in 1991, Lukman got an instant appointment as the National Secretary of the Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) in Lagos. In 1992, his activism caught the attention of Oshiomhole, who encouraged him and facilitated his getting appointed as the Research Officer of National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria in Kaduna, the same union which Oshiomhole served as the General Secretary.

In 2002, Oshiomhole, as the President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, again facilitated Lukman's appointment as the Education Secretary of the NLC, the position Lukman held until 2006, a year before the expiration of Oshiomhole's as the President. Lukman then returned to Zaria to form Movement for a Better Future as a platform for community organizing and development. From 2009, Lukman served as the General Organizing Secretary/CEO of Good Governance Group (3G). He was also among the group of 54 Nigerians that initiated the formation of the Save Nigeria Group, which he coordinated its activities in Abuja.

Is this the same person that Oshiomhole described as an empty brain with no mind of his own? And is this the same person that Oshiomhole wanted Nigerians to believe got foisted on him and the Progressive Governors Forum as Director General by the Chairman of Nigeria Governors' Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi?

Of course, with my little knowledge of Dr. Fayemi, I doubt if the latter would bother himself to respond to Oshiomhole's spat. Even in his silence, Fayemi's wisdom cannot be matched by Oshiomhole's. That anyone reasonable enough can attest to. Neither would I expect Dr. Lukman to try and disprove his "pig" status, as alleged by Oshiomhole. The pig is already known.

But the question to ask the flippant Oshiomhole at this juncture is this: Between him and Fayemi who first knew Lukman, and who is capable of foisting him on the other person, assuming Lukman is such a pliable personality?

I will like to conclude this view of mine with a short story:

Once upon a time, a student went to his teacher and asked a question: “Sir, is there any good in talking a lot?”

The teacher replied: “Toads and frogs croak night and day, yet no one pays any attention to them. But the cock crows at a certain time of night and wakes up everyone.”

The teacher smiled at his student and added, “This proves that no good is achieved by talking a lot. What is important is to say the right thing at the right time.”
