Oga Lexus…
This your thought process is like asking people to migrate to Dutse (Jigawa State) or Nguru (Yobe state) or Zungeru (Kebbi State) or Monguno (Borno state) or Oye-Ekiti (Ekiti State) or Abatete (Anambra State) or Nembe (Bayelsa State) etc….

In ALL the places I mentioned above, they can get a 5 bed bungalow for less than the price of a 1/2 bed face-me-I-face-you in Abuja or Lagos.

Question is: Are there jobs? What (really) is the point of moving away from London to Hull or Sunderland or Middlesbrough or Newcastle or Durham or etc… and there are no jobs there? You buy/rent cheaply, but there are no jobs. What’s the point?
Absolutely 💯... England has about 26 million jobs. 20% of those are in London. London is just 2% of England o... So, 2% land mass has 20% of the jobs.

It's just like Lagos. People outside Lagos always said "Leave Lagos if the rent is high!", but will they leave their jobs and career to go to more affordable City? It's not an easy situation.

Remember, London is the financial capital of the world so it's not easy for people with certain expertise to find good jobs outside London

This is the beginning of attempting to catch a monkey, on a tree ..........😛😂

Loads of other cities available........ Explore wider options .......... We can't all reside in London......😜😭
I was responding to her comment about London not insinuating we would all reside there o cheesy

However, can you mention some of these available Cities outside London that someone who works in London can explore?

We had had this conversation here before and people were mentioning Croydon, Kent, Dartford, Cambridge etc. but those areas are not cheap!

Many are not looking for houses in London but Houses within a 90 minute drive from London yet even that is not cheap in decent areas

I don't agree with this statement oo especially in London. Rent is coming up higher than mortgages and rent is increasing yearly but mortage is decreasing as your loan to value is decreasing
The Math speaks for itself, especially in London. If you are lucky enough to find a property in London for £450k, which is very unlikely, you would pay about £2,400 in Mortgage repayments monthly while you would have been renting at like £1,800 or less for a similar property.

I'm all for Mortgage, but just pointing out that, with the current interest rates, renters shouldn't expect a lower Mortgage payment when they switch.

Are you saying, your 25% is £100K.........

Time to either relocate or downsize........ 😂🤣
You ancestors say this a lot grin. Houses are no longer that cheap o, and these are not London or majestic houses: just normal houses in decent Cities close to work. For one working in London, for instance, it's hard to get a house below £300k that you won't be travelling hours to work

Zahra29:
I agree, on the whole it sounds like a good opportunity especially for those already paying rents that are comparable or even higher than a mortgage.
With the current rates, many Mortgage payments are higher than rents. Typically, someone in a 2 bed flat paying £800 gets a Mortgage for 3 bed house and monthly payments jump to £1,500 or more.

If affordable, it's a good opportunity EVEN with the increased payment.

So worrisome but same behaviour from back home now creeping in here. Another thing that hurts are those ones charging people for information. You come on NL to learn for free, get what you want and next thing you see them advertising one-on-one to 'advise you' eeeeeiiii cheesy Imagine oga Lexus and Justwise monetizing their experience on here ....but meh we all go alright las las. To think the person even came here to solicit advise but didn't see it fit to share speaks volume......whoever you are chop your employer oooo! cheesy cheesy cheesy
So, all the information the guy shared is useless because he didn't give out personal datahuh

He gave everything about how to search for the job but it's "behaviour from back home" and "monetizing" because he didn't feel comfortable sharing the name of the Company? He gave detailed steps of how to find it on Indeed, if it's no more there, then the opening has closed, why should people bombard the Company?

Can't you see with the care work stuff he mentioned, it's not even wise to say the Employer name in public?

I better prepare, all the information I share here, the day people ask me for personal data and I don't share, I become "selfish".

The whole thing is not just fair especially with the hustla guy saying that terrible statement of minimum wage and British citizens won't do it, all because he didn't get the Employer name he requested? What kind of bullying is that?
TravelRe: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by Solumtoya:

How many Nigerians do you think the company recruited? Why do we think so negative like this? Its a bloody company's name, no one is asking for his full name and address.
Exactly, only the guy knows best why he doesn't want to share and he's well within his right.

It's not negative but cautious thinking.

With the "bloody" company name, anyone could search the full name and address.

Still for the sake of argument o...

We don't have to go so far, see how "positive" the guy who is asking for the Company name is, saying "minimum wage, survival jobs that a lot of British citizens don't even want to do, what will you do if it's a £100K/year job?"... And you are asking why we think so negative. We think so negative because people are mean and, according to Albert Einstein, infinitely stupid cheesy

Lets assume for the sake of argument that someone actually contacted the company saying...Nigerian they recruited gave out their company's name, what is wrong with that? The job was advertised in indeed which is a public job site.

I can understand if the job was through connection and was not advertised in public at all.
Sure, for the sake of argument, here we go:

The guys also stated that he works at a care home and he's not sure whether to quit for this particular job.

Someone may write to the Company saying "The Nigerian you recruited on a 3-month contract works in a care home like me too, so give me a job". Meanwhile, he may not want his Employer to know that detail. I really don't want to stretch how far people can go

My point is: This is an anonymous public forum, people should respect the limit to which people feel comfortable sharing personal data. And no one should be called selfish or talked down on for exercising his right.

People have being sharing links and company's name here for ages, that is exactly one of the reasons thread like this exist, He got the job already so sharing the link will not cost him the job, the company will not recruit more than they needed just because he shared their names here.

If it was referral link he will be spamming this thread begging people to use it.
I'd love to see other posts where people were sharing their current Employer's names

Have to disagree bro. Apart from the other things that have been cited, the fellow might just prefer to keep his identity truly anonymous ous. We don't know the size of the company and how unique his Nigerian identity is, such that his activity here will be traceable. It might even be possible to find out his full identity via LinkedIn et al if one knows where he works.

Not holding brief for the person but there are many reasons why people might not want their NL profiles to be traceable to their IRL identities. The conclusion that he is hoarding the info is not fair.
It's so unfair!

Imagine the statement that he's "hoarding minimum wage, survival jobs that a lot of British citizens don't even want to do"

Very careless yarn!

It’s not any dangerous mindset, no dey guilt trip people into sharing information they don’t want to share. The person mentioned Indeed, that alone is enough. When he resumes the job, he fit share the info or he fit no share, it’s his prerogative. Abeg live and let live.
The way some people talk is very funny. He should share the name of his Employer so people start writing mails to them saying "A Nigerian you just recruited informed me there are openings" or such stuff. Let the guy even start first na. He's answering all other questions but you're calling him out because he's refusing to share personal details of his Employer to complete strangers on a public online forum!

There's nothing selfish about it. The entitlement on this platform is getting a bit much. No one owes you such private information, people share what they're comfortable with and it's very wrong to call them selfish for doing so

It's perfectly okay if he doesn't feel comfortable sharing the name of his Employer on Nairaland. He already gave enough info on how to search for the job.

The thing is mathematics can be very funny. We are just talking based on assumptions and not hard data.

Until someone sits down, with all things being equal, and give both parties. (Party A - an immigrant renting a house) (Party B - an immigrant who is owning a house with 5% down payment)

Lets assume party A rents for 5 years and he saved up about 20% down payment for a mortage of 20years on a house of 200k

Lets assume Party B has always owned a house on mortgage with a down payment of 5% for a house of 200k for 20 years.

I dont know who would have saved more money. I wish there was hard data we can work with to see which is better, to save up enough deposit for a mortage while still paying rent. Or just go into the mortgage market from the on set even if we have only 5% deposit
The Mathematics won't be too hard but one has to make so so many assumptions in such calculation. Rates of Interest changes, Asset Appreciation, Rent hike, etc. There are no hard and fast rules and the preferred option will change with slight adjustment in any of those assumptions

Also, gurus….what’s the take on shared ownership?
Apartment or house?
Shared Ownership: No. The limitations are much, you still rent the "un-owned" part.

Apartment? No. In addition to the above, Service charges can increase drastically.

These are my personal takes but it will vary depending on circumstances, factors, etc

Stocks & Shares ISA.

Last year, a veteran on this thread shared a link. I downloaded Freetrade app. I have been saving for house deposit using moneybox LISA.
Now, I am in position to be saving £100 weekly. I would really like to be buying sticks & shares on the Freetrade app.

My problem is, I don’t know which ones to buy. What constitutes intelligent buying. And which ones to avoid.

Please can people help me? I understand you will always add the ‘No financial advise’ disclaimer. But please. Any pointers? Or sharing of experiences?

Firstly, if you're investing in S&S, you should typically leave the funds there for up to 3 to 5 years cos while 1 or 2 years might result in loss position, you would typically recover in 3 to 5 years.

As a beginner, you could do well to avoid individual stocks and invest in ETFs and Index Funds and Mutual Funds. They are a collation of well-selected individual stocks that reduce the risk for the investors. For instance, the most popular: S&P500 which tracks US' top 500 largest listed Companies. So, even if many Companies start failing, your risk is spread across: so some will crash, some will rise. That way, it averages about 10% per Annum. This means that it may be -9% this year but next year may be +25%

A platform like Vanguard has many such ETFs of Bonds (lower interest, lower risk) and Shares. The best is a mixture of both as Vanguard does in their Life Strategy Funds.

Lastly, watch out for the fees. Always go for funds with very low fees.

Watch a few videos on these keywords I mentioned and you should be fine. I am thinking of doing a few videos myself so I can point y'all to them.

NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE O

Honestly if your ultimate goal is to save towards buying a house then stock and share is not the right tool to use considering the risks involved. During the pandemic a family friend was saving to buy a house and they decided to start investing in stock and share while economy reopen. By the end of 2021 they have lost closed to £30,000. They have to start afresh again saving
Awww... they ignorantly jumped into Stocks and Shares and probably invested in individual stocks. Could be brutal.

I tried some brokers and approached my bank too secure a mortgage but all are declining cos I don’t have a permanent status yet. So I am thinking of saving instead and expanding the deposit percentage. Thanks in advance.
There are a lot out there but a good rate for secured and "safe" investment might still be like 5% or less

Your choice, Cash will give lower but guaranteed returns. Stocks and Shares should typically give higher returns but your funds are at risk of reducing

Not at all, building insurance does not cover regular maintenance. It is for eventualities like flood, fire/arson incidents, blown roof etc. If content insurance is added to the policy, then the contents of your house like your furnitures, electronics, etc will also be covered.
Oh, Wow. I had thought I could buy that peace of mind that renters get with a good insurance policy

Plus you can always overpay on your mortgage (almost all lenders allow 10% of the loan per annum), and when things get hard, pause the overpayment. Not using all your available cash also means having reserves for any repairs that crop up. One of the things a lot of first home buyers ignore is the amount of little work here and there that ends up wiping you out or you ignore it and it becomes a bigger issue. There's no landlord to call on!
I thought insurance would cover all the little work here and there?

Thank you for the correction. I stand corrected. What I intended to say is that the naira goes much further than the pound equivalent but that does not even matter, just saying.

Q: Why do you think many Nigerians are migrating? Nigerians migrate for various reasons. I for example, wanted to learn how to do things the proper way so I can contribute to the growth and development of Nigeria.

Q: What do you think is the annual salary of a manager in a Nigerian company? Since you left it open, my former colleagues who are managers now earn about £52k equivalent which is not too far from what I earn as a manager in the UK.

Q: How many active Nigerians in diapora have you seen return home to pick up a job? That's an individual choice, there are many, especially from where I come from, that return home. Heck, I spoke with lots of my friends back ome who have foreclosed the idea of moving abroad even though they have the means.

But as I said, it's all individual preference and what I like may not be what you like. That does not mean you or I are crazy.
Nigeria was good to me, may God give me the opportunity to pay her back.
Nice... I hope you get a good opportunity to go back.

BUT Very few industries will pay a Manager N48m per Annum. Good industries that pay well like Banking will pay less than half of that. The average will be somewhere around N10m which is N700k per month. So if one loses such good job of N48m, finding another might be tough.

Industries that pay well will be located in maybe VI or Abuja. Your monthly expense will be about conservatively N600k for a family of 5. This doesn't include:
School Fees of roughly N2m per Annum per child;
RENT of N3m (in a good, secure location).
If you decide to buy a 2012 SUV car like a Highlander, you cough out like N11m.
Prepare for heavy repairs and replacement on generator and cars too cause of high usage, bad roads, bad technicians and bad fuel.

All these are financial alone. Don't wanna talk about flooding, labour laws, kidnapping, robbery.

Nigeria is a great place, no doubt. We'd all love to stay back. BUT it's not hard to see why many people are leaving.

This used to be a thread where all opinions were valid. No question was considered stupid and everyone got along.

Today I have had people belittle others experiences by using negative words like "bitch" , "go back to Nigeria" , "you should be grateful " and others. I am sorry but those sentiments are not okay to share and definitely not in the spirit of the thread.

Can we have our old thread back please? Feel free to share your experiences of the UK.
If you disagree, read and pass. PEACE ✌️
The same you said "all opinions are valid"
The same you said some "sentiments are not okay to share"
The same you said people shouldn't share their opinions but "read and pass"

I just learnt "you should be grateful" is a negative word?

You can't love the thread only when opinions you consider positive are shared and try to force it to adhere. The ongoing conversation is extremely valuable for this thread. We need to understand these things: both those about to come and those already here. Real experiences, opinions and fact should be shared on it: that is the very essence of this thread.

I come in peace o grin

I totally agree with your comments. Aside from straight PR and bigger space in some provinces, I won't pick Canada ahead of UK. UK beats Canada in most other areas. Healthcare is even worse there. Tax are higher in most of the provinces, should we talk about mobile phone contracts, insurance etc. What about the extreme cold weather? UK is boring, Canada is worse. Different strokes for different folks.

Laslas, we will all be fine.
The job market is also similar.

I have an Indian friend who was a Banker back home, his wife who is also a Banker had the opportunity to be transferred to the UK on a Tier 2 visa. Same time, coincidentally, they got their Canada kini. Of course, they rushed to Canada. After staying for a month and meeting other Bankers who had moved before them and informed them that it was difficult to get a job at similar level in their home Country without the mighty "Canadian Experience" in industries outside Health and Techie Tech; plus the weather was so so bad, it was boring, etc etc, they quietly accepted the offer of the wife and moved to the UK. The Husband got a £50k+ job in a month, and in less than a year, got another of £60k+... He has his Canadian PR but never returned till date.

My wife's friend visited from Canada and couldn't believe how cheap things are in UK.

Canada... UK... Will always be pros and cons with both sides equalling out but Nigerians will always complain sha grin

The UK/Nigerian comparison is the funny one and typically done by folks who have not lived in both Countries in the past few years. Those who have lived in Naija, earning well and moved to this place know the CLEAR difference.

Cardiff? - cost of living is fair for a capital city but I find it a bit pricy for a small city of that size (my personal opinion though).

Newport is cheaper, located between Cardiff and Bristol. So you can live in Newport and work in any of the 2 cities.

In terms of work, I don't have first hand info on that but shouldn't be bad.... your work experience matters too though.
