In civilised countries, if a person kills another person, be it in a military coup or not, be it 50 years ago or yesterday, even in self defence, there will be some sort of judicial enquiry into what happened. Even now in The Hague, second world war criminals are still answering for there crimes 70 years after that war ended. He was the highest ranking military officer at the time and the right person to take over. Even the Northern military officers knew that and had little or no qualms with his ascension to power. The problem was his decision not to deal with the proponents of the coup which bred suspicion and the unquenchable desire to revenge what they believed was an Igbo coup.
