General surgery is a surgical specialty that focuses on abdominal contents including esophagus, stomach, small bowel, colon, liver, pancreas, gallbladder and bile ducts, and often the thyroid gland (depending on local reference patterns). They also deal with diseases involving the skin, breast, soft tissue, trauma, peripheral vascular surgery and hernias.

General surgeons may sub-specialize into one or more of the following disciplines:

1. Trauma surgery/ Surgical Critical Care

2. Laparoscopic surgery

3. Colorectal surgery

4. Breast surgery

5. Vascular surgery

6. Endocrine surgery

7. Transplant surgery

8. Surgical oncology

9. Cardiothoracic surgery

10. Pediatric Surgery

If the above still does not cure their deep levels of ignorance then nothing else will.

There are 9 and not 10. I have been wisely advised to stop offering you niblets of knowledge especially when you never seem to soak them up and I am going with that advise. Thanks for the attention and your questions do not necessarily deserve an answer from me not when you already drew a conclusion. Recently been reading on challenges of young doctors in the NHS recently.
It must be hectic.

It's beyond hectic. Now we have a lot more female doctors here unlike how it used to be. We are now probably at par with the male professionals when it comes to numbers and the struggle is always there to measure up to them as those who were first on the scene.

Lots of patients often prefer running to male doctors than us but it's changing gradually and I thank God for that. It has challenged us females to strive and become more and I am doing just that.

Trauma surgery is a surgical specialty that utilizes both operative and non-operative management to treat traumatic injuries, typically in an acute setting and normally focuses on the abdominal area along with any given 'Emergency' field they may be required to serve upon. Trauma surgeons generally complete residency training in General Surgery and often fellowship training in trauma or surgical critical care.

Under General surgery you can choose to have sub specialties and I chose trauma surgery due to my field of focus. However my core specialty is General Surgery.
