Politics / Federal Government Is Committed To Developing Sustainable Infrastructure by spartanobad(m): 9:22pm On May 08, 2016
The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola , has restated the
Federal Government’s determination to develop stable power supply, good road
network and affordable housing for Nigerians.
This is contained in a statement made available
to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday
in Abuja by the Minister’s Special Adviser
(Communications), Hakeem Bello .
It said that Fashola gave the assurance when he
spoke at the African Alliance 2016 Investors Day
in Lagos.
It stated that the ministry was determined to
achieve results by doing things differently to
develop sustainable infrastructure to convert
current challenges to opportunities for economic
growth.
He was quoted to have decried the problems
inherent in the entire power chain, “from
distribution to transmission, generation and gas
supply, including a cross-cutting liquidity
problem”.
The statement said the existing gap of meter
supply in the distribution segment of the power
chain had created enormous opportunities for
local production for estimated three million
consumers.
“Local producers or investors are expected to
meet a significant local content participation that
would help Small and Medium Enterprises
supply an estimated three million consumers
who needed to be metered. Apart from
metering, the distribution companies have aging
assets: Transformers, ring main units, poles,
cables, breakers and so on, some of which are
20 to 30 years old. It is a problem on one hand
and enormous opportunity on the other hand,”
it said.
The statement stated that the ministry planned
to complete about 47 transmission projects to
deliver 1,000 MW more carrying capacity this
year to expand national growth plan.
The statement said that the Federal
Government, in spite of low oil revenue, had
upgraded budgetary allocation to ensure
completion of existing roads across the six geo-
political zones.
“This is the first step to sustainability. But it is
not enough to budget. It is important to
implement the budget and use the finances
properly. We plan to phase 206 roads over three
years to ensure completion or substantial
progress of existing roads with heaviest traffic
and strategic economic significance in each of
the six geo-political zones.”
The statement also reported the Minister as
saying that an agreed common purpose and
parameters must be defined to have a
sustainable and affordable housing design that
had national acceptability.
The minister disclosed that the Federal
Government, in partnership with the private
sector, was on a Nigerian housing model that
would consider geo-political cultural differences.

Politics / FG To Launch "Change Begins With Me" Campaign by spartanobad(m): 6:59pm On May 07, 2016
Nigeria’s Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed has said that the Federal Government is in the process of launching a massive nationwide campaign tagged “Change Begins With Me” . Mohammed who made the statement during a courtesy visit to the corporate headquarters of The Guardian, noted that the soon to be launched campaign followed requests by people who have approached the government over what they considered the distorted values in our society. According to him, They are worried about the erosion of values, widespread indiscipline, dwindling integrity, poor attitude to work, etc. They say it is time for the government to launch another War Against Indiscipline, WAI. If the Danfo driver will stop drinking “paraga” before hitting the road, if the patent medicine store operator will stop selling fake drugs, if the average worker will carry out his or her duties diligently, our society will be a better place. He noted that the campaign will begin with a Summit on National Rebirth, Values and Ethics in July. The minister also said that the 2016 budget will be used to lift Nigerians out of poverty. “We plan to do this through six social intervention areas that will greatly impact on the economy as well as on lives: 500,000 graduates are to be employed and trained as teachers, 370,000 non-graduates (artisans, technicians) to be trained and employed; one million people (farmers, market women, etc) to be granted loans to set up small businesses; Conditional Cash Transfer to be made to the most vulnerable people (not unemployed graduates); School Feeding targeting 4.5 million school children and Bursaries/Scholarships for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) students,” he said. Politics / Dickson Probes Bayelsa Salary Funds by spartanobad(m): 6:51pm On May 07, 2016
Simon Utebor, Yenagoa Bayelsa State Governor Seriake Dickson has inaugurated a nine-member judicial commission of inquiry to investigate fraudulent falsification of government payroll and other accounts. The governor, in a statement by his media aide, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, on Saturday, said the measure was part of his efforts to sanitize the civil service and entrench corporate governance in the state. Justice Doris Adokeme is the chairperson of the commission while Mr. Victor Slaboh is secretary. The commission which has two months to conclude its assignment is also to extend its investigation into payroll fraud to the eight local goveenment areas in the state. This is just as the Nigeria Labour Congress, Bayelsa State branch, said though the probe panel was a step in the right direction, it should, however, not be used as a witch-hunt against genuine workers. “Labour unions have no reservations about the Governor’s probe panel provided it is targeted at uncovering payroll fraud. However, the probe should not affect the genuine workers in the state, ” Chairman, NLC, Bayelsa, Ndiomu John-Bipre, said on Saturday. On the issue of unpaid salaries of workers, John-Bipre said the NLC was still in discussion with the government, noting that the congress would still meet with the government next week. Dickson, while inaugurating the commission at the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, gave an eight-point term of reference to its members, with a charge on them to investigate in full the circumstances surrounding the state’s payroll of public servants from 2003 till date. He described the task before the commission as important and sensitive to the survival of the Bayelsa State. The governor mandated its members to also uncover the person or persons, cartel or gang involved in the suspected fraudulent distortion of the payroll and nominal roll of public servants from 2003 till date. He stated, “The commission is expected, among other things, to reveal the identities of the perpetrators of the suspected fraudulent falsification of salaries in ministries, departments and agencies of government as well as determine, where possible, the exact amount of government money that may have been lost through the criminal activity.” According to Dickson, the commission has the responsibility to uncover the method employed by the suspected perpetrators in depriving government of large sums of money. The governor urged the committee members to recommend measures to recover such stolen funds. He also called on the commission to make any recommendation as it might deem fit to strengthen government’s accounting and payroll procedures for the future, adding that such measures had become imperative to block leakages of government funds in view of the prevailing economic challenges.

Crime / Young Mother Of Two Allegedly Beaten To Death By Husband In Their Home by spartanobad(m): 11:25am On May 07, 2016
Ronke Bewaji Shondewas allegedly beaten to death by her husband this morning May 6th at their home at Tiemo Crescent off Awori street in Egbeda Lagos. According to family friend who reached out to LIB, Ronke and her husband had a fight in the early hours of this morning at their home while their kids were sleeping. One neighbour later said he heard the noise coming from their flat early this morning but didn't think it was something horrific going on in the home. Around 7am, the couple's nanny came to the house to resume work only to find the house locked and no one was opening the door. She tried to call her madam but her phone was switched off. She peeped through the window only to find the couple's 6 and 4 year old kids crying and saying they couldn't wake their mum up. By this time, neighbours had also gathered and they forcefully opened the door to find Ronke's lifeless body on the floor, blood gushing from her head. The husband, Lekan Shonde, was nowhere to be found. Ronke's phone was also missing. He'd locked the kids with their dead mum in the house and took off with her phones. Her body has since been deposited at the mortuary. She was in her mid-30s. According to family friends, Ronke suffered domestic violence in her husband's hands for many years but refused to leave the marriage. Sad it took her losing her life for this to end. Quite sad!

Politics / President Buhari Signs 2016 Appropriation Bill by spartanobad(m): 11:10am On May 07, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday signed the 2016 Appropriation Bill of N6.06 trillion into law with an oil benchmark of $38 dollars per barrel. Buhari said at the event that through the 2016 budget, titled “Budget of Change”, the government seeks to fulfil its own side of the social contract. “This administration is committed to ensuring that henceforth the annual appropriation bill is presented to the National Assembly in time for the passage of the Act before the beginning of the fiscal year”. He said that in designing the 2016 budget, the administration made a deliberate choice to pursue an expansionary fiscal policy in spite of the huge decline in government revenues from crude oil exports. He said that was why it decided “to enlarge the budget deficit at this time, to be financed principally through foreign and domestic borrowings”. The president noted that all borrowings would however be applied towards growth-enhancing capital expenditures. He also reassured that in spite of the current difficulties the administration would work extra-hard to achieve its revenue projections. “Our revenue generating agencies are coming under better management and are re-oriented. The implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) is expected to contribute significantly to improving transparency over government revenues. Our determined fight against corruption is resulting in improvements in the quality of public expenditure. The work of Efficiency Unit, as well as other public financial management initiatives, are also contributing in this regard. The continuing efforts to reduce recurrent expenditures should hopefully free up more funds for capital expenditure in 2017 and beyond. I read the newspapers and listen to the TV and radio news; I hear your cries; I share your pains. I want to commend the sacrifice, resilience and toughness of all Nigerians, young and old, who have despite the hardships continued to have hope and confidence of a great future for Nigerians. But permit me to say that this government is also like none other. We are absolutely committed to changing the structure of the Nigerian economy once and for all,” he said. The president said government was working hard to diversify the economy such that the country would never again have to rely on one commodity to survive. He said the aim was that we could produce the food we eat, make our own textiles and produce most of things we use. “We intend to create the environment for our young peoples to be able to innovate and create jobs through technology.” He acknowledged that the journey might not be easy but in the interest of many, government had to tread the difficult path. “But I can assure you this government you have freely elected will work with honesty and dedication day and night to ensure that our country prospers and that the prosperity benefits all Nigerians, he said. Buhari expressed pleasure in the signing of the budget and thanked the leadership of the National Assembly for their cooperation.
