@house,urgent reply is need 4 dis issue:

i just figured out that in d ds-160,person paying 4 trip is sponsor;but d problem is that i entered my mum as person paying 4 trip, cos i thought they meant "person paying 4 flight",but my sponsor is uncle.

If asked,"who is sponsoring u",I'm planning on saying,"my uncle is my sponsor, while my mum is paying 4 trip",then if asked,i'll say "i thought paying 4 trip meant paying 4 flight" to avoid discrepency, cos if i say uncle alone n d VO sees d discrepency,it might lead to denial. Urgent reply is needed plsss! My interview commences in less than 45 mins
if you still have time and if it's still possible, fill another ds 160 in the way u feel it's right and update your profile on your appointment page otherwise do as already advised.

Thanks for that succint response. You know,i selected an option to reschedule my appointment,in which if an earlier date becomes available, which would be two weeks earlier at least,it will be automatically scheduled for me(According to them). But ,until that happens,my original date remains valid.

i was only thinking of "taking the bull by the horns",myself, hoping it doesnt backfire. And,considering my original date is in March, can i still afford to "gamble"?please respond.
Does this mean Dexterousg = Gbenge 77?

I think you can give it a try since march is 2mths away.

If the date you have now is already close (within the next 2wks) and already competitive then "Ya don chop ya cake be say ya don chop ya cake."

You could be very much lucky no one picked the date before you come back to your original date.

The bottom line is, you are not guaranteed your original date. QED.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FRIENDS.I am a regular follower of this thread for more than a year but never had a reason to comment or ask questions. Now I have one & I want everyone to help me. I will soon be going to the embassy for my f-1 visa and here is a brief detail of my academic standing.

Presently, I am a 400level student of university of Ilorin studying chemical engineering. Immediately after my 300level academic section, I applied as a transfer student to a varsity in NEWYORK with 1st choice program as CHEMICAL ENGINEERING and 2nd choice as COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH MATHEMATICS. Now I have been given admission to study COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH MATHEMATICS.I have also been asked by the school to forward my statement and passport for them to issue my I-20 but I am quite reluctant to go forward with the process due to how I perceive my case from the angle of the CO. There is a big question, I may have problem giving a satisfactory answer to, if actually asked by the CO.

CO: Why leaving your program (I am already in 400level) to start over somewhere else, isn’t that a waste of time?

**** Note that I applied as a transfer student and the school promised to evaluate/analyze my already taken courses, I know I have taken most of their 1st  & 2nd year courses (they are general courses & I saw it through their website), so I may be lucky to be enrolled in year 2 or 3.can I pick points from this to assist my answer.

CO: You are already studying chemical engineering, now you are going for COMPUTER SCIENCE WITH MATHEMATICS, Why transferring to a program that is unrelated to your previous program of study??

****Personally I prefer COMPUTER SCIENCE to ENGINEERING FIELD any day, anytime, in fact I am a web designer & help friends in solving network and software issues at school for a fee, I am ambitious to explore more of the computer science world, but that’s just me, how can I convince the consular who may look down on me like some kind of unserious fellow. I have been thinking of well sounding response to those questions but each time I come up with ideas, I will later end up saying to myself that the consular will hardly buy into it and may probably say  ‘‘I AM SORRY , YOU WILL HAVE TO GO BACK AND FINISH YOUR STUDIES, I CANNOT ISSUE YOU BLA BLA BLA’’
I now turn to my good nairalander to please  help suggest points/ideas that I can use to prove myself worthy before the consular. Please don’t read and ignore, please, pleas, plea, pls help.

I AM YET TO REPLY THE SCHOOL FOR MY I-20 REQUEST, AS I WANT TO BE SURE FIRST IF I HAVE A GOOD DEFENDABLE CASE & THE TIME IS TICKING AGAINST ME.
Just found out UNILORIN had been running a Chemical Engineering programme since 2008 today, so you must probably be the first set?

Anyway, to the crux of the matter, like you've realized, it is a very much dicey situation, considering the extent to which you've gone with your undergrad programme in Chemical Eng but it is not impossible.

Really, Computer Science with Mathematics and Chemical Eng are not too "divergent". You might want to give technical explanations for the seeming gap by telling the VO that the use of software programs for Process Design, Modelling, Simulation and Control stoked your interest in writing programs and developing similar modeling apps which has fueled to your intention to study Computer Science with Mathematics , just some stuff to make it less deviating.

Like some house members have pointed out the most reasonable thing to do is to finish your undergrad and go for your masters in any area of your interest later on (which is, most likely, what the VO might be thinking too). It is understandable if you find it difficult taking this advice cos you must have put in a lot of efforts and resources at this stage.

My guess is, you have a clearer picture of the situation now, so the options are yours for the taking.

P.S.
You can go ahead with getting your I-20 while trying to make a decision on whether you want to honor your admission or not, as you get more advice.

Please i need your response. I want to ask anyone that have register for GRE exam online before if it is still possible to register online using credit card cos i check their site and i saw there that Nigerian are exempt from the online registration. I will prefer to register online cos it cost just $190(30k) compare with some1 registering with the prometric center. i need more light on it as i will to ask a friend from USA to do that for me as soon as possible. Thanks
THIS REPLY IS FOR EVERYONE WHO IS YET TO TAKE THE GRE.

You can actually use a GTB debit Naira MasterCard to register online but the card holder must be profiled for Internet banking and must have a small hardware device (called "token"wink issued by the bank. Only the exact NGN equivalent of USD190, at the bank's prevailing exchange rate shall be debited from the card holder's account.

Please note that this information is NOT valid for TOEFL registration.

Yeah, its supposed to be sent directly to the new school from your previous school and they realise that so they wld understand if you explained to them. We have students' copies of transcripts too which is not compulsory for you to have but if you have excellent or good grades on it, you might wanna get a personal copy, it can greatly boost your chances cos the VO can assess your academic capabilities.

If you present a transcript, then be ready to have questions thrown @ you from it, just be prepared.
Well replied.

Hi everybody, I am new to this post, being following it since nov 2011, I recently went for my own interview and I was denied at lagos on the 8th of dec but my problem is that they took my original SEVIS receipt. I have already booked anoda appointment for feb and I have asked the school to defer my admission from spring 1 to spring 3 resumption date which is in march 2012, the school said they will issue me a new i-20form but am I going to pay for anoda SEVIS fee? They said the fee lasts for abt a year but I don't have my original receipt. I don't knw what to do. Please!! Help!!
Ebele,

I am surprised that your SEVIS receipt had to be withheld or is there anyone in the house who has experienced same?

You can call the embassy to verify it was not a mistake to withhold your receipt.

Meanwhile, you don't need to pay for another SEVIS fee. Even if your sch's issuing a new I-20 your SEVIS ID remains the same, since it's the same school. So print the online receipt which is ok for the interview.

On a different note, pls share your experience so that you and others can learn from it.

@House, maybe we should make it a house rule: Anybody who wants some help/advice from the house should share his/her experience. "No share, no ear"

and you, yes you you! we are expecting a BIG TESTIMONY in six days and counting *wink*

My Destiny,

Why do you think the VO was asking the same question over and over again?

He asked a clear question: "Why are you going to the US?"

Simple sample answers are: "For business", "For my undergrad", "For my grad studies", "For a fashion show", "To watch world cup", "To go and see the Statue of Liberty", "To go and charge my phone battery (lol)"etc etc etc

but u already jumped to question #2 answering "Why the US?". See the difference?

The VO must've been really disappointed. Going forward, it's really good you shared this cos, trust me, you won't fumble on this question again.

Wishing u all d best

[b]I ended up spending the whole day at the airport no thanks to Aero angry, I got back to base a lil after midnite but the joy of my interview overwhelmed all the frustration Aero wanted to put me through. Anyways here's how my interview went at the Abuja embassy:

After all the normal fingerprinting and stuffs, we sat down on the queue waiting to be interviewed. I observed there were 4 VO's and cubicle 7 was the cubicle to avoid  grin (she is the new "chinko" and was denying everyone and impatiently too). I secretly prayed against getting her but God refused my prayer cos He had already placed my Visa in her hands.

VO: Pass me your documents.

Me: (Passed my travel documents, educational documents and financial documents)

VO: (Picks up my passport and looking into my I20) Why did you choose to study IT at Minnesota State University Mankato? (she seemed to have a problem pronouncing "Mankato" so I corrected her and told her the correct pronunciation).

Me: I chose MSU Mankato because their MS IT program has a flexible, practical-oriented curriculum designed to address and proffer cutting edge solutions to the ICT needs of businesses and organizations which suits me perfectly as a working professional. The curriculum allows a perfect blend of my major interests: Software, Networking, and Databases. Moreover, my present job requires expertise in these areas which means I will be able to immediately apply the skills acquired during the program on my return to Nigeria.

VO: What do you do?

Me: I work as a Systems Analyst at the University of XXXXX. I manage and maintain web projects, servers, email and elearning systems.

VO: What are your plans after graduation?

Me: I'll have to return immediately to my job as I'll be on a study leave throughout my program duration. I'll also have to work with my present employer for at least 2 years after my program which is a condition for granting the leave. In the not-too-distant future, I intend to start up my own IT consulting firm.

VO: Your visa is approved. Take this form ,  bla bla bla (I no hear the rest cos of happiness).
Me: Thank you (forming calmness) grin

Note that she didn't check any other document apart from my passport and I-20. No questions about finances/sponsor, transcripts, GRE/TOEFL (which I didn't even have). Looking back now, I know it was just God's favour. People were shocked she finally gave someone but them no know say na Baba God sign am. Special thanks to Square65 for putting me on my toes with the mock interview and also for your prayers and encouragement. Jummy, I am so happy for u. Congrats!

To your oblivion, d statements in bold already addressed your home-ties with which, evidently, d VO was satisfied.

So where d party at?

To all, I hope we've all learnt that

1) nothing like "Visa don finish for dis yr"

2) While visa approval does not depend of sevis payment, making d payment and having evidence to show same cld be an index of your genuineness abt ur purpose of travelling. Moreover, If u have not paid (or u don't have d receipt) before ur interview, do not fret just go with confidence and give ur reasons y it is so. I have a strong belief that if they've decided to issue u a visa, sevis payment cannot be an ONLY reason for denying. d worst u cld get in dat situation wld be a call back.

3) WAKANOW.COM IS NOT FRAUD

4) More house members will be granted dis month than d those of the last 2mths combined together. (Did I hear an Amen?)
