KDF training their future enemies.

Reminiscent of the 2009 -2010 period when kenya trained 000s of Somali troops who would later alshabaab
Yeah, I thought about it too when I saw the pictures. But the 2009 move was a cluster fvck, , there was no structure, we just trained ppl and sent them back. But this time there is a legitimate govt with its own structures and has been fighting the enemy for some time now.
And what choice does KDF have. If you listened to the CDF of KDF interview on how the recent maritime ruling by ICJ will affect KDF operations and relations in Somalia going forward .. you could deduce that his thinking was right now Alkebab is the real and current enemy ...
It's better to deal with an aggressive but legitimate and conventional state/nation than ragtag militia that will use any means necessary to achieve their goals including targeting civilians.

Russia takes a shot at F35 program while launching it's 5th Gen fighter video made my day with this part... "Please renew your subscription ; cheesy cheesy"

The promotional video also includes a sequence where an actor opens an ammunition box only to find it empty, and shows a tablet displaying an error which reads “Please renew your subscription”. The segment can be interpreted as poking fun at the F-35, as the aircraft is often criticized as being over reliant on the monitoring of its manufacturer.

I believe we can all agree that this is a pan African military forum and as such new users like chakib MUST be welcomed with both arms open.
This thread has been around for more than 10 years and in most times it's been mostly the usual suspects (people from the same countries) posting pics, so if an Algerian wants to cover all that time in one fell swoop, let them feel free to do so!
People from outside Nigeria don't just get to this thread because they saw an ad on some random website, they do so because they were searching for info about African Militaries and this thread was like finding a gold mine.

I pray that one day Egyptians, Ethiopians, Sudanes,Rwandans, Ugandans, Senegalese, Malians ... Even that country/state called Rep.of Saharawi (I hope I got that right) .... All represented fully!!!!
Ps: How about just one female military enthusiast and maybe an actual soldier high up in the chain of command who occasionally pops up to correlate or correct members when they post stories that are not factual or need corroboration

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mining_industry_of_the_Democratic_Republic_of_the_Congo

Imo, another country should be allowed to take over the ENTIRE landmass in exchange for security and development for min 30 or even 50 yrs. Said nation is free to dexploit ALL AND ANY NATURAL RESOURCES. That wuld be better than what they're suffering now.
What if we go the other way and stop any outside forces from exploring any of those precious minerals for those 50 years and let nature take it's course... Maybe they will go through there own mini evolution process and be ready to take their place in the world after that.

This is fantastic news.

Any renders for what the ship would look like?
The ship will be a wagon ferry for carrying a train and its cargo i.e a train loaded with containers or oil tankers rolls into the ship after being divided into 4 parts, the ship then sails to the destination port and rolls out and continues its journey.

1. The biggest challenge is to manage the production process, everyone in the industry knows that smiley Look at Tesla, their products are highly innovative and there is demand but still they struggle in terms of quantity and quality. The success of VW and Toyota is based on their unmatched perfected supply, logistics and production management. This is why those mentioned countries followed this route.

2. People ignore the fact that the Ezwugu MRAP and the ARA 1 have nothing in common, beside the they are based on a Ukrainian truck chassis. The ARA 1 design has some foreign influence - by SA engineers.
Stop thinking about billion dollar companies where millions of pre-orders are made even before production hits the assembly line .... Tesla, Toyota, VW are all established and trusted brand names, while what we are talking about here is basically creating a startup and you're already stuck at the idea of not meeting demands, so basically we shouldn't even bother doing the research and prototyping cause well we will never be able to produce 500,000 units a year when we become established brand name?

Covid-19 was a wake up call that Africa needs to start depending on ourselves in Research, Science and Technology... Would the Nigeria Airforce have made a ventilator if they used your logic? https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/394604-coronavirus-ventilator-fabricated-by-naf-ready-for-use-official.html

Where did they suddenly get this expertise to fabricate this life saving equipment especially given the fact that Nigeria had only 350 ventilators before the pandemic https://www.brookings.edu/blog/future-development/2020/07/02/how-well-has-nigeria-responded-to-covid-19/

What's stopping NAF airforce going back to the design board and perfecting this ventilator then mass producing it for every hospital in Nigeria and possibly beyond? This should be the new way of thinking.. lets put money in research and see what our brightest minds come up with before we even think about how we are going to mass produce the successful prototypes that they come up with.

Those are my 2cents

SuperSixSeven:
China, South Korea and Turkey did not start with clumsy inventions. No nation would spend 100s millions on second class arms just to support the local defence industry.
These countries followed a better plan: First they layed the foundation of their defense industry by license building foreign equipment and platforms. And then with a functioning industry at the base, manned with a well trained workforce, they acquired successively more and more technology-transfer deals to catch up. Today their academically educated workforce can innovate into new fields and produce state of the at equipment. This takes decades and not just will but also a huge amount of financial resources that we dont have at the moment.
That's the kind of close minded thinking that makes us not even bother starting our own defense industries in the first place..... You don't need to be making "license built" weapons for you to make quality products 10 years from now... you can go from zero to 60 pretty quick these days. And if the expertise and the experience isn't there, there are plenty of experts in the diaspora working in world renowned companies that we can bring back home to give us the expertise that we need....

I mean, look at the Ezwugu MRAP that Nigeria makes, first version looked like they took a chassis and wielded armourments as a body and called it an MRAP, It looked funny, it looked to heavy.... A few years later, each newer version looked more professional, and now if you put that MRAP in the middle of others in a Military exhibition show in Dubai or Paris, no one will doubt that it belongs there.

And if you think about it, Manufacturing equipment isn't the biggest challenge to owning an invention, the biggest challenge is designing and simulating that the product works even before you make the first prototype for testing.... When you are license building something you don't get to make decisions or gain a lot of experience on this part, You are making products that have already been designed and tested, you are basically following step by step instructions made by the real inventors. So we can start by sending our brightest to these institutions to learn from the best before coming back to do wonders.

So I say, lets pick our brightest minds from universities to make those 2nd class indigenous equipment worth hundreds of million(in research)... Lets then test them and learn from where we went wrong and try and improve on it.... 30 years from now, we will be asking ourselves why we start right after independence for we would be years decades ahead.

Excellent analysis! We urgently need to think of coproduction and ToT of not just sexy FSBs but all platforms from UAVs, transports, light attack planes and choppers.
Not as IMPOSSIBLE as say just a mere decade ago: China, India, SoKor, SA,Turkey, Pakistan and even Indonesia are now busy in aerospace ventures looking for developing country partners. They know the first in the door will benefit for decades.
I heard India was shopping for an African partner for their Rudra.
By mid table 2030s the West stranglehold on aerospace tac tech will have died.
One decade ago, If I read something like this, I would have said its wishful thinking but As we have seen time and time again, its not too late to start your mil industrial RnD.... some countries started with sh!!t that looked funny and they were ridiculed for their so called inventions, 10-30 years later, and no one is laughing anymore, They are exporting - selling and eating into the pie of those that used to laugh at them.
All is needed is political will, a set of strictly followed timeframes run by good management team and full budgetary allocations and soon enough we will be surprising ourselves with each newer version of our prototype.

I first heard a decade ago some used F 15 EEs were inbound,a massive 35 birds with low frame/powerplant. Since then nothing and I really think the story was BS. Those heavy twin engines start at 80 mn USD FAC,5 mn USD annual operating cost. It makes sense to go for the single engine F 16 Block 60 at 70 mn USD, 4 MN USD annual cost.

A KAF flyguy told me around 2012 a team was checking out prospective Russian airframes, can't rmbr which exactly and nearly cried when Vlad said,"you guys have probox money and want a VX! That can't go."
Uncle Sam will never sell us advanced fighters, We will have better luck going for UH like black hawks, Chinooks, light and heavy transport or light attack hellos from them, we can maybe convince (after intense lobbying) US Congress for us to get away with attack helos but never fighter jets.

USA won't sell fighters unless it benefits them geopolitically, strategically, diplomatically etc and right now we don't have any leverage(the war on terror doesn't meet that threshold) Back in the 70's when we received advanced (at the time) fighters, it was a totally different. To the north, Ethiopia and the whole horn of Africa including Somalia to the East was looking to USSR , So too was Uganda to the west, To the South Tanzania was getting goodies from China... Kenya was thus in a strong position to incentivize the US to provide some serious deterrence that their 'ally' can use to counter any aggression, just like Iran was to the US in M.E when the received f-5s similar to Kenya in the same decade. Such kind of perfect storm where the stars align - cold war scenario is never gonna happen.

I would suggest we look to EU for advanced fighters. Several EU countries have already announced that they are going to stop aid programs to Kenya by 2025(if I rem correctly) and instead they are going to switch their diplomacy to a more trade/business centric relation (equal partners sort of thing) where we will no longer get preferential zero-tariff treatment when exporting goods to them, we will have to negotiate bilateral/multilateral trade deals where principal of reciprocity applies.
It is with such countries where they are likely to treat us as business clients/customers when we have the cash to order their advanced fighters rather than US who is more than likely going to treat us like a child asking his father to buy him an Uzi thinking its a toy.

China and Russia too won't ask alot of questions if we have the cash at hand but it would take a shift on policy for that to happen.

Very sloppy, or a PR job, the media was all over the place, the don't even have the common sense to secure the area
From the videos I have seen, About 5 vehicles from where the suspect's vehicle was there was regular police car, ATPU went on foot , the moment the suspects vehicle were surrounded, two more vehicles from ATPU showed up to pick the suspects. This was a targeted operation, They knew exactly who and what they were after.

From the stories you here of Recce Squad and ATPU, this is how they operate. i.e in and out in minutes and they speed off to where ever they go to, then just as they leave, regular cops show up to cordon off whatever evidence or crime scene is left - sometimes the regular cops even take credit for it.

A source said the police were acting on information they got after arresting a recently apprehended terrorism suspect in Mombasa, who then revealed the details of the planned attack.
https://nation.africa/kenya/counties/mombasa/mombasa-police-arrest-two-suspected-terrorists-3521848

And BTW, it wasn't the whole media all over the place, It was just Nation Media - Me thinks Nation Media has been given access to make some kind of documentary, I have noticed a number of sensitive operations where somehow its only Nation Media that has HD images of the incident.

This is another operation that happened back in April, in which once again, only Nation Media had quality photos from the operation--- Looks like its the same guys

Guarded welcome for Kenyan troops in DR Congo flashpoint town

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/afp/article-9891357/Guarded-welcome-Kenyan-troops-DR-Congo-flashpoint-town.html
Kenyan soldiers poised to serve in the UN peacekeeping force in DR Congo have arrived in Beni but found a lukewarm reception in the flashpoint eastern city.

Local resident Adriel Tsongo, 30, said the troops from the East African country, making their first mission to strife-torn North Kivu province, "inspire a little confidence".

But, he said, "We do not trust the UN, and we wonder if these Kenyans will make a difference."

He took a swipe at the "very passive" UN force's FIB brigade, which was authorised in 2013 to take on a more offensive posture but is accused by locals of doing little to protect them from armed groups.

Why, after 20 years of... failures, are they adding more troops, saying that they will fight harder than the others?" asked student Benjamin Sivanzire.

He said the UN soldiers were "lazy" and predicted the Kenyans would not be able to do better than other units.

Such scepticism is deep-seated in Beni, a town of about 200,000 people that has suffered grievously at the hands of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

- Notorious group -

Linked by the United States to the Islamic State group, the ADF is considered to be the deadliest of more than 120 armed groups that roam eastern DRC.

The Catholic Church in the country says the ADF has killed around 6,000 civilians since 2013, while a respected US-based monitor, the Kivu Security Tracker (KST), blames it for more than 1,200 deaths in the Beni area alone since 2017.

The toll has risen sharply since 2019, when the militia appears to have become more radicalised, carrying out massacres in remote villages and taking survivors hostage.

Anger: In November 2019, a crowd stormed a UN compound on the outskirts of Beni over perceived inaction over ADF attacks
Angry protests, some of which have turned violent, have erupted in Beni over perceived inaction by the UN's peacekeeping mission, now more than two decades old, and the DRC armed forces.

As of May, the UN force, MONUSCO, listed its forces at 12,181 troops and 1,612 police, with a civilian contingent of 2,970 employees. The annual budget is around $1 billion.

The FIB, deployed notably in Beni, consists of battalions from Malawi, South Africa and Tanzania, now joined by the Kenyan troops.

The force is being strengthened with four "organic rapid intervention units" in order "to increase the presence on the ground for the protection of the populations", military spokesman Major Ari Foukory told AFP.

The Tanzanians arrived a few months ago, the Kenyans moved into their quarters on Monday and Nepalese and South African contingents are expected shortly, he added, without specifying the number of men concerned.

- Need quick results -

Kambale Musavuli, a taxi driver, said the situation in Beni was getting worse.

The presence of MONUSCO "didn't stop the ADF from cutting people's throats", he said, adding he hoped MONUSCO would "clear off".

"If the Kenyan troops want to earn the trust of local people, they have to start straight away with operations that give tangible results," Tsongo said
Otherwise, he warned, "we will again protest against this force, which isn't helping us at all, and demand its departure".

"What counts is the result on the ground," agreed Calvin Maliro, a youth leader in Beni's Bungulu district.

"We have heard that the Kenyans are used to fighting jihadists," said another youth representative, Jimmy Kighoma, for whom the new peacekeepers were "welcome" so long as they "aren't coming as tourists".

"We understand the public's exasperation, given the killings, the barbarism and violations of human rights," the FIB spokesperson said.
MONUSCO, he stressed, was not there to replace the Congolese army. Its main mission is "to ensure the protection of civilians", he said.
