I was talking to a student

We start telling and encouraging ourselves not to worry because we are in control of every arrangement and preparations for the exams when in reality we are not

As well as wasting what could be constructive study time, evidence suggests that procrastination is unhelpful for a number of reasons.

Research from a number of Universities backs up the idea that spacing your study over a longer period gives you better understanding of the subject matter and a better memory retainingcapacity of what you have studied.

And much more importantly, free you from cramming and intense anxiety resulting from trying to meet up with the exams date

In most cases, cramming can lead you to believe you have studied the important thing well and will remember them in the exams hall,

But instead in the exams hall,we will start recognizing some fragrance of what we crammed here and there that we can’t constructively and reasonably put together again when the exams question appears in front of us.

And then the only thing that will be left of us will be regrets of why we could not start preparing for our exams early enough like the story of the lady in part one.

Rushing and struggling in the last minutes to prepare for your exams is less likely to help you remember the important information you will need to write your exams and be successful.

So by leaving your study until the last minute, you are likely to feel worse and perform below your real ability!

When you just look at your child and wonder
“why is it that this child so lazy and
unmotivated to do anything especially school work?”

you focus your energy on that child changing

When I was younger my mum complained
a lot about me being too slow and not smart
even at my home chores and my school work
She talked about it like I deliberately decided
to be slow or not smart

This made me feel like she didn’t really care
about me even when I know she is my mother
I didn’t really feel like changing to be smarter
or better,
it just made me more stubborn

This affected my education till Senior Secondary School,
even when I became wiser and knew that it was
from a place of love.
By then it was a bit late because I had failed
a lot and repeated some classes.

This got me thinking…
Maybe if she had paid attention to the problem
and not me, I would be more motivated
to change or do better .

Also

My aunt’s son Seun was very stubborn
he didn’t like to read at all. Anytime his mum asked him
to read, he would practically hit his leg on the floor and grumbled.

When my aunty noticed this
she spoke to him calmly to understand
what the real problem was
and she addressed the reason he was always
reluctant to study.
With this, he became motivated and was ready
to learn because he didn’t feel like he was attacked.

As an educationist, I have discovered
that the problem with most children and teenager
is they feel unmotivated to read.
But if you make the problem all about them
and not seeking to know the problem and
why they act the way they act,
they will continue to throw tantrums and be more difficult

This is how you can go about it
Let your child know that you care about
who he or she is as a person

Connect with your child over things
that interests him or her (this works a lot)
and then bring up the conversation about the problem
and how you can both find solution to it
Discuss their favourite hobbies with them

This will help your child to understand that
while he or she may be struggling, you’ll be there the entire way.
And this feeling will actually motivate your child
to do better I their education

In the previous article, I gave one question to ask yourself before giving up on your CIS career dreams, so today, I will be giving you three questions to ask yourself before you make that decision of giving up on your CIS career dreams

2. Is the reason I really want to quit pursuing this goal worth it?

Often the primary reason to why you want to abandon this project is because you are afraid it will be another wasting of your time and resources all over again.
Because you are afraid you are going to fail again
But if you don’t keep going, you will never know how far you could have gone
And you will miss out on being the person you would have become.

3. Am I acting on impulse or emotion instead of thinking things through?

Sometimes our emotions give us hints about what we want and what we should do,
But other times, they are just responses to stress, and maybe even indications we are on the right track.
If you act on that moment of intense emotion; be it anger, fear, or frustration,
You may regret it once the wave has passed.
So sit back, take note of what you are feeling
Feel it fully, without judging it or yourself.

4. How much have I already put in?

How much have you invested?
How much money and time have you devoted to becoming chartered?
How many sacrifices have you made?
Are you really willing to chalk it all up as a loss Just because you are not feeling confident in your abilities?
What about the career opportunities that accompanies it?
Are you ready to take that risk to regret later?
I guess not…
Because as the saying goes; the pain of discipline is always better than the pain of regret.
Let me conclude by asking you this question;
Assuming your best friend was in your shoes, would you advise him or her to give up because he can’t possibly reach his goals?
I also guess not…
I guess you would practice your finest motivational speech and help him see what a great potential you see in him or her.
Unless you are secretly a “frenemy” who hopes he fails in life
The truth is that you would push him to his best…
So why not push yourself?
It may sound tacky, but you need to be your own best friend,
More than anyone one else in the world,
Deserve your own believe and motivation.
If after asking yourself all these questions and still feel determined about your decision to give up,
Then good luck to abandoning your dreams goal of becoming a stockbroker.
But if you don’t…
If there is some lingering doubt, then keep working towards that dream that you know will elevate your career and give you that self-fulfillment.

The WAEC examination is
one of the most important exams
that will grantee your child stay in the university.

Some months back,
it was announced that some WAEC results were impounded
by the council because they were involved
in some sort of examination malpractice
about 26 years ago.

How does this affect your preparation
for the March diet ICAN exams if you stay in Lagos?
I spent close to three hours on a journey of
30 minutes from Egbeda to Ikeja.
That’s three hours of wasted time,
a time that would have been used to do more productive things.

This would be worse on Saturdays because of
the different owambes within the Lagos metropolis.
Imagine going for your ICAN class and
you are stuck in traffic for two, three hours,
you would have missed part of the class
and even get to the class exhausted.

P:S: Spending three hours in traffic isn't a good idea
for you as you prepare for your march diet exams.

I was surprised when I saw the news
on December 4th 2019,
the West African Examination Council(WAEC)
withdrew some 1992, 1993 candidate examination certificate.

Upon reading the news,
I discovered that those results were impounded
because they were involved in all
sorts of examination malpractice.

You might want to say it's been
26years ago, yes but this has
a lot of other implications.

I also read that
Joint Admission and Matriculation Board(JAMB)
has also identified those candidates
and are taking steps to work with
the institution they graduated from
to denounce their certificate.

After reading the news, it got me thinking
“this could have happened to me
if I was involved in some sort of malpractice.”
So,
“Can I allow this to happen to my children?"

A child who you have celebrated
because he/she has written,
passed his/her WAEC, passed JAMB,
got admission and even graduated,
only to realize all those achievements
will be withdrawn and reversed because
of an action that you could have prevented.

Nothing beats peace of mind
knowing you got all your achievements
without cutting corners to achieve.

You can save yourself and your child
the stress, trauma, shame and agony
that comes with this kind of situation
by helping them prepare adequately for their exams.

and solve enough past questions

1. Practice, Practice & More Practice


It is impossible to study calculation subjects properly by just reading and listening. To study calculation courses, you have to roll up your sleeves and actually solve some problems.

The more you practice answering the calculation problems, the better.

Each problem has its own characteristics and it’s important to have solved it in numerous ways before tackling the exam.

There is no escaping this reality, to do well in a calculation exam,
you need to have solved a LOT of problems beforehand.

2. Review Errors

When you’re practicing with the problems (questions), it’s important to –

Work Through the Process for each Solution.

If you have made any mistakes, you should review them and understand where your problem-solving skills let you down.

Understanding how you approached the problem and where you went wrong is a great way of becoming stronger and avoiding the same mistakes in the future.

3. Master the Key Concepts


Do not try to memorize the processes.

This is counter-productive. It is much better and rewarding in the long-run to focus on understanding
the process and logic that is involved. This will help you understand how you should approach such problems in the future.

Remember that calculation subject is SEQUENTIAL, so it’s important to have a firm understanding of the key concepts that forms the basis for a topic before moving on to work on a more complex solutions which are based on understanding the basics.

How am I supposed to meet up now?”
Whether you’ve fallen behind on your preparations
due to chronic procrastination or something totally out of your control,
it’s fine. You’ve got this.
Here are some top tips to help you complete your preparations in time for the exams;

Don’t panic…

It’s natural to feel the need to panic when you realize
you’re no longer on track with your preparations.
When you feel your heart is sinking and the frustration rising,
stop and take a moment to calm down.
There is absolutely no point in panicking,
it will only make you feel worse and stop you from
focusing on your studies.

It’s now more important than ever
to keep your cool –
reading with a level head will allow you to focus
and absorb what you’re reading.

Please don’t start comparing yourself to others
who seem to have gone far ahead of you.
Dedicate your energy instead to catching up with your own work.

A fear faced is a fear defeated…

Look at the contents of your syllabus and make a note of the topics you
feel least comfortable with.
You might feel like avoiding these topics to read them
but actually these are the ones you should start with.
They might seem scary now but once
you dive in and break the topics down you’ll begin to understand them.
This will even help you gain confidence
as the topics worrying you most are now out of the way.

Read exams past Questions and their mark schemes…

Past questions are effective revision tools
and are good for checking if you’ve really understood the subject.
Ideally, you are to do all the papers in exam conditions
then cross check your work with our solutions on the members area.
Studying the past paper questions and solving them
will enable you to be familiar with the questions and
also to picture them while in exams hall.
For Maths questions, take note of the steps shown
in the mark scheme so you know how to lay out
your answer to maximize on your method marks.
You can also look through exam papers to find questions on
topics you don’t understand. Practice these questions
instead of the paper as a whole for some intensified and targeted revision.

Study smart…

Pick the best resources to study from depending on
how much time you have left before the exam.
For Instance; if it is only limited time left but lots of work to do,
use revision guides and videos rather than
textbooks or making your own notes from scratch.
It might feel like you’ve run out of time to revise
so use your time efficiently. Have some revision notes on hand
while you’re on the bus or waiting for the kettle to boil.
But while doing that, just be careful
and don’t spend every spare minute you have on revisionand overload your brain –
it’s important to know your limits!

Don’t wait to ask for help…

If you come across something that has you completely lost
don’t be afraid to ask for help.
Go to our telegram platform and ask the lecturers or
even your friends to go through the topic with you.
It’s too close to exams to just ignore
what you don’t understand and
it’ll save you some precious time if you get someone to help you.
If you’re generally feeling like the stress of exams
is becoming too much, speak to someone you trust

Talking about your worries is often all it takes to make them feel better.

Do you know that you can start your accounting career
immediately after you finished Secondary School?
But most commercial department students of secondary schools are
not aware of this, according to a recent survey

If you start ATS after secondary school, you would have
become a Chartered Accountant before you
graduate from the university.

This is how it works;
After your SSCE, in a year, you will finish ATS 1 the first diet and
ATS 2 the second diet because in a year there are two ATS diets.
The next year, you will finish ATS 3.
While in the university, since you have ATSWA certificate, you will start ICAN from
Skill Level because you will be given exemption for Foundation Level and
one paper in Skill Level(Audit and Assurance), it means you will not write any paper in
Foundation Level and one paper in Skill Level which is Audit and Assurance.

So in your year 1 in the university, you can write ICAN Skill Level and
in year 2 you can write Professional level.

You may ask, but how will I combine all the ATS courses with
my school studies? The answer is simple,
what you will be learning in the university is almost
equivalent to ICAN courses, if you are studying accounting,
but
if you are studying other courses, the truth is
your brain is still fresh while you are still in school and
it can accommodate as much as you allow, so no shaking.

This means by the time you graduate from the university,
you would have become a Chartered Accountant.
This will give you an advantage as a young graduated, in fact it is easy for
companies like PWC, Adekola Deloitte, KPMG, Accenture Inc and other
top accounting firms to employ you.

Isn’t that enough reason for you, your child or anyone you know to start their
accounting career journey immediately after secondary school?

let me share a feedback from the part 1 of this article.


“I have been a Chartered Accountant
for over 3 years now. Something
unbelieavable happened in my office recently.
There was vacancy for the post of Chief Accountant.


A colleague, Mr Orioye and I
were top contender for the job.
The company hired an outsourcing firm
to conduct the interview for Mr Orioye and I.



They panel started with an Oral interview,

P.S: Most time we don’t determine
what the labour market demand of us
as professionals, but decide to fit in by
updating our skill or do nothing and become outdated……

How I wished I had wrote last diet ICAN exams,
I had to skip the exam because of the work load in the office.
A colleague of mine advised me to plan ahead, like 3 months to ICAN exam,
So that I can study for just 1 to 2 hours a day and will finish studying the
2 courses I was to write but I ignored because I felt I was too busy.

This week I received a promotion letter too and was transfer to another branch….
Of course I am very happy about it but my work load multiply times 3,
now I work on Saturday and even on Sunday sometimes just for the new branch
to meet the monthly target.

Now I am not sure I will be able to write ICAN exam in the year 2020 because
I need to prove my worth that I am capable as a manager.

I am not complaining or regretting but I just want my story to encourage
all ICAN students to start early preparations even when they think they are busy.

My only regret is that what If I get a bigger job offer but It requires that I must be a Chartered Accountant……. Hmmm ‘yawa don gas be that ooo’

Well, there is no basis for argument.

Kansas City Star because his editor felt he
“lacked imagination and had no good ideas.”

• Did you know that Walt formed his first
animation company in Kansas City in 1921 and
made a deal with a distribution company in which he
would ship them his cartoons in New York
and get paid six months later?

• Unsurprisingly, he was forced to dissolve his
company because he could not pay his rent and
was (reportedly) surviving on dog food.

• Needless to say, he went on to be nominated for
59 Academy Awards and he is a
great animator of our time.




4. STEPHEN KING:

It is termed ‘the king of talk’
• Did you know that one of his most successful books,
Carrie, was rejected by 30 publishers,
one of whom told him that “negative utopias” do not sell?

• Did you know that after so many rejections,
King reportedly gave up and threw the
manuscript in the bin?
Luckily,
his wife retrieved it and urged him to have another go.

• Did you know that he eventually published Carrie,
and the rest is history?


5. JK ROWLING

The author of the hugely successful
Harry Potter series has had anything but a smooth ride.

• Did you know that by the time she finished the
first of the Harry Potter books,
she was divorced, on welfare and with a child to support?

• Did you know that all 12 major publishers rejected
the Harry Potter manuscript?

• Did you know that finally, a year later Bloomsbury
accepted it and extended a very small £1500 advance?

No doubt, it was one of the best decisions the
publishing house has ever made.



6. COLONEL SANDERS

It’s never too late to start a fast food empire. Just look at Colonel Sanders.

• Did you know that it wasn’t until the age of 62
that Sanders, with a $105 social security check in hand,
pitched his chicken recipe to restaurants?

• Did you know that according to reports,
some 1,009 people rejected him?

• Instead of giving up, he hit the road and began trying
to sell his franchise-model chicken restaurant,
eventually he succeeded with a restaurant outside of Utah.

• It became the first Kentucky Fried Chicken and
the restaurant tripled sales in a year,
mostly from the colonel’s chicken.

The bottom Line is that every success has a failure experience within it.
So, you see, it’s rare that successful people have a smooth run.

some hurdles along the way that help you build strength and resilience .

Last diet, one of my students had this issue- overconfidence.

Tobi last diet, finished the syllabus and
solved enough ICAN past questions
and was ready to attack ICAN from
anywhere ICAN chose to pick questions from.
He did not know that he could fail that course.

Tobi had four courses left in Skills level.
He prepared well for two courses and the
other two courses, he did not prepare well for it.

In the exam hall, after attempting the two papers
he did not prepare well for, he did a re-check
to see any aspect that had errors and corrected it.
But for the other courses, he was too sure,
So he felt reviewing the work was not necessary
because he was so certain of what he wrote.

See some disadvantage here:

1. Overconfidence makes you to rate your

competence too high and makes you enter

into situations that are beyond your controls.

At the end of the day, there will be a

disconnection between what you think you know

(perceived ability) and what you actually know (reality).


2. It will allow you to start having

some thoughts that are not reasonable

which eventually leads to failure.


3. Overconfidence will not allow you

to do proper findings on the area of your weakness.

4. It will make you to be intolerant,

you will be so full of yourself,

you won’t want to hear other’s opinions



When ICAN result was released,
Tobi with his confidence went to check his result.
Tobi was surprised at the outcome,
He passed the two courses he thought
he did not prepare well for.
And
failed the other two courses he thought
was a concluded matter. He felt disappointed,
and was curious about what happened.

My question to him was,
“Did you review your work before submitting?”

Sometimes, over-confidence will make you
not to review questions properly before giving solutions,
and you’ll end mixing things up-
giving the right answer to the wrong question
and this will lead to failure.


However, it is not an excuse for
lack of confident in yourself.
Believing in your self will come
when you are sure to have done your best
by solving past questions in the Member’s area,
covering the video lecture at least two times,
attending the telegram class and participated.

I trust you will put in your best
into this ICAN March diet exam and
make sure you understand the question
before giving solution…. YOU ARE THE BEST…
