am I the first person to write ICAN exam?”...........

I still can’t stop laughing when I received that replied from one of our students.
I won’t want to spoil your Xmas and New Year fun, afterall,
all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.


While it’s nice to ‘Partee after partee’ this festive period,
chances are you’ll still need to keep studying to make sure you’re totally
ready for next diet ICAN exams.This is very important considering the fact that
we will have 3 diets for ICAN exams next year 2020.

If you party all through December and part of January,

The answer is NO, you can choose not to be distracted because you need to pass ICAN exams.

SO, HOW CAN YOU AVOID DISTRACTION AND STAY FOCUS WHILE STUDING?

1. Always put your phone on silent mode and place it away from you while studying, don’t even but it vibration mode.


2. Turn off your Internet access…. Did I hear say “NO” .
Well, it is just an advice so that you can pass your exam.

3. Ask people (Your spouse, children or friends) to give you privacy or better still, look for a private place of study or maybe use the library.

4. You need a time table to plan your reading time and be very strict with yourself on this. You can request for our 30days success blueprint.

5. When you notice any form of distraction; admit it,
say out loud “this is a distraction” and take a deep breath and stop the distraction.
This will help your subconscious mind to define what is a distraction to you
and learn to ignore it.

If you ask 100 people what their problem is 99 out of the 100 will complain about money, true or false?

In search for the money most of us have forgotten to take care of our health. Some people even feel like the whole 24hours is not enough for them. So they constantly skip sleep.

Some people even say they can’t sleep more than 4 hours a day because anything more than that is too much, they don’t feel fulfilled because the money as to be made.

It’s true, I agree with you, this money as to be made, no time for dulling…

But you also need to be alive to enjoy the money you are trying to make or gather. Have you thought about this- that all the money you are trying to gather for your children and family- what if you are not in good health, will you be able to spend it?

God forbid! Good health is your portion

Research as shown that not having enough sleep can lower your life span. Without enough sleep, over time, the memory circuit becomes water lodge

Also your body will be prone to more diseases like brain tumor, loss of memory at a younger age and the list goes on and on…

I would not mention all because the aim of the message is not to scare you but to encourage you to have a longer and healthier life. So you will be able to see your children and be able to communicate well with them at your old age.

So the question is how many hours should I sleep as an adult?

An adult should sleep nothing less than 8 hours a day and children 10 hours a day.

The other question maybe, if I find it difficult to sleep, how do I sleep?

First you have to put your phones away, switch off any form of light, reduce any strenuous activity one hour before bed time. And finally, have a regular time you sleep everyday both on weekends

I hope you start sleeping well from today

Yes I think I agree with the reply one of students that was sent to me after we announced that we are commencing ICAN lecture this week.

In his words “I don’t think ICAN Telegram lecture should start now, since we are still awaiting result. What if I fail a course in one of the courses I wrote last diet.

By the time I want to join the lecture for the course I failed, the lecturer would have done much in his lecture?”

We actually commence the lecture because of those that did not write the last Nov diet but want to write March 2020 diet.

If we have to wait till the result is out, maybe Dec would have gone, so we will be left with January, February and few days in March.

Our aim is to help you finish the topics in the syllabus before the exam so that you can have 100% chances of success in your ICAN exams.

In addition, never assume that you might fail any of the courses you wrote in the last diet, what if you pass it!!!

As parents, we become more anxious when our children get to the teen age; 13, 14 or 15years. You begin to really worry about how your child’s future is going to turn out

I was surprised so I asked why he thought that

His take was that WAEC had been set up in a way that most students cannot pass their papers at a sitting

According to him, during her brother’s time he made sure they went for extra lessons and even employed a private tutor for them but they still had to write the exams twice

He just wished there was a way his daughter could write her exam in SS2 and quickly move to the university before his retirement

I sensed the worry in his voice so I told him he needs to do something different for his daughter if he doesn’t want her to repeat her exam twice

He was very interested in knowing how. So I told him about the WAEC video lecture

I know Preparing for exams can be very demanding.

It is one of the situations every student would want to avoid in life if given a choice. The level of stress experienced in writing exams always increase during the exams period.

This stress could have a negative impact on both our physical and mental health, therefore reducing our ability to perform well on exam days.

Research has shown that this level of anxiety is as a result of uncertainty from us in terms of our level of preparation.

DEVELOP A STUDY PLAN:

Most of the students don’t plan how they’ll prepare for CITN exam. They just tell themselves that they’ll study as much as possible then hope for the best. This isn’t a wise approach at all.

Preparing for an exam is like taking on an important project. If I may ask; would you start building a bridge without first coming up with a plan?

Would you just begin construction and “hope for the best?”

I don’t think so...

In a similar way, it’s important to outline in writing, a strategy for how you’ll get ready for your CITN exams.

HERE ARE SOME QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER AS YOU DEVELOP YOUR PLAN:

• When will I start studying?

• How many hours each day/week will I block out to study?

• Which topics do I need further clarifications on?

• Which assignments will I review?

• How many exams questions will I need to practice in every topic I study?

• How many times will I review my Jotted notes and materials and my Starry Gold Comprehensive

• What distractions am I likely to face, and how will I overcome them?

With these questions in mind, you will be able to strategize and eliminate every hindering obstacle. Remember as the saying goes, “Failing to plan is planning to fail”.

Don’t leave your preparations to chance, as that might not guarantee you an adequate preparation;
make sure you have a plan for your CITN exams.

According to the bureau of statistic, in the first week of December 2019, Nigeria Banks have sacked over 2,929 workers.

Jumoke who was one of the workers that was sacked went on Twitter to lay her outburst. She said that she was one of the active workers in her department yet she was sacked.

So I DM her and asked her few questions;

Starry: Hello Jumoke, sorry for what happened to you.
Jumoke: Hi, but who are you.
Starry: Just let me be a shoulder you can learn and cry on. I really empathize with you.
Jumoke: ok thanks.
Starry: Can I ask you few questions?
Jumoke: Kindly go ahead.
Starry: Were you the only person in your department?
Jumoke: No, we’re two, the second person was not sacked.
Starry: Please give me the full details why you think you were sacked.
Jumoke: I worked in Micro-finance bank and I’m very good at using Accounting software used in the company. I go the extra mile such that I close late just to make sure there is no outstanding task to be done.

I also go to work sometimes on Saturday. But my colleague that was retained has only an edge over me, she is the one that handles all our manual excel document, she analyze and format the data before it is uploaded into the accounting software.

Once it is 5pm, she is on her way home and had never been to work on Saturday even though she would be paid bonus if she came.

I still can’t figure out why they should sack me but retained her.

I want you to be the judge, if you were the owner of the company, if you have to sack one of them, who will you sack?

Busy people think that getting more things done in the sanctioned eight or nine hours at work is the way to go. They fit in too many tasks in their to-do list only to end up moving most of their tasks the next day.

Productive people know too well that they do not need 40 tasks in their to-do list.

They take a less-is-more approach when it comes to planning their work day by only accomplishing those that are important.

P.S: There is a huge difference between being busy and being productive. You can be busy all day and still feel like you’re behind on accomplishing your goals.

How I wished I had wrote last diet ICAN exams,
I had to skip the exam because of the work load in the office.
A colleague of mine advised me to plan ahead, like 3 months to ICAN exam,
So that I can study for just 1 to 2 hours a day and will finish studying the
2 courses I was to write but I ignored because I felt I was too busy.

This week I received a promotion letter too and was transfer to another branch….
Of course I am very happy about it but my work load multiply times 3,
now I work on Saturday and even on Sunday sometimes just for the new branch
to meet the monthly target.

Now I am not sure I will be able to write ICAN exam in the year 2020 because
I need to prove my worth that I am capable as a manager.

I am not complaining or regretting but I just want my story to encourage
all ICAN students to start early preparations even when they think they are busy.

My only regret is that what If I get a bigger job offer but It requires that I must be a Chartered Accountant……. Hmmm ‘yawa don gas be that ooo’

Hope you are not scared of what the outcome of your

1. PUT A TIME LIMIT ON THE WORK.

Most teachers will not expect younger kids to work longer than a half-hour on homework from any particular subject but demand your child’s teacher for a time limit.

If your child struggles (while actively trying) and exceeds the limit, write the teacher a note explaining that’s all that could get done.

Contact the school.

If homework or a project is turning into a dreaded battle, talk with the school. Don’t wait for your next conference.

It’s obviously time for some new insights and new strategies.

2. HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN HOW TO ORGANIZE HIMSELF.

This is a life-long skill that can be taught, but it can be challenging to do so. However you can help your child discover the organizational tricks that will work for him by sharing some of your own.

“It’s very difficult to teach children to be organized if it is not in their nature (or yours),” says guidance counselor Linda Lendman, M.S.W.

“Encourage your child to label everything. Develop strategies, like the ‘must-do list’ before you leave school (put math book in backpack).

Schedule a weekly ‘clean out the backpack and clean off your desk’ time so papers don’t build up. Be patient, and try not to place blame.”

3. RECOGNIZE THAT SCHOOL WORK WILL NEVER BE CONFLICT-FREE.

No one ever raised a child without a homework battle.
“There is no conflict-free homework strategy for most kids,” says Michael Thompson, Ph.D. “At times, kids will find it fun and fascinating.
Other times, it may be something they just have to do and you have to help them find the structure for getting it done.”

4. Understand your Doubts

Sometimes you can get stuck trying to solve part of a question and find it difficult to move on to the next stage. It’s common for many students to skip this question and continue on to the next.

You should avoid doing this and instead spend time trying to understand the process of solving the problem. Once you have grasped an understanding of the initial problem, you can use this as a stepping stone to progress to the remainder of the question.

Remember: calculation courses require time and patience to master.

It is a good idea to study with a friend who you can consult with and bounce ideas off when trying to solve complex problems.

5. Create a Distraction Free Study Environment

A proper study environment and a distraction free area could be the determining factor when solving complex equations or problems.
Some people belief studying with music can help create a relaxing atmosphere and stimulate the flow of information, you may want to try having suitable background music (just instrumental without the voice) to foster an environment of maximum concentration.

6. Create a Dictionary

Some CIS subjects have specific terminology with a lot of vocabulary.

I suggest you create Notes with all the concepts, terminology and definitions you need to know. You should include their meanings, some key points and even some sample answers so you can consult them at any time and recap.

7. Apply the calculations to Real World Problems
As much as possible, try to apply real-world problems when approaching calculations. Looking for a practical application can help change your perspective and assimilate ideas differently.

Budgeting, for example, can be used in everyday life to predict the outcome of spending and determine whether it’s going to be deficit or excess…

Oh and don’t forget that it’s also important to have confidence in yourself and face the exam knowing that you have prepared properly!

Thinking of waiting till a month to your ICAN exams before you starts your preparations?

You think it would be feasible enough to use one month or three weeks to get yourself ready for the
exams and still make it?

Well no doubt a very small percentage of students can still thrive on the last minute “cramming”. But most of us aren’t able to do so not to talk of the uncalculated risk involved.

You are definitely better off being well-prepared in advance for the exams than waiting to cram at the last minute. You need to give yourself enough time to study and you need to plan this in advance.

Starting your preparations now will not only increase your chances of success, but will also give you the level of confidence that you need to conquer the exams.

But how do you get started and what do you need to do?

The best place to start is to determine what type of approach and techniques that will best suite your learning style and schedule

Should you allocate two hours every day for your studies? Or you should allocate one hour during weekdays and dedicate more hours during the weekends?

How much time to allocate will depend on the level of your busy schedule and activities. If you are a type that always go to work early and return back late from Monday to Friday, you can consider using one hour every day during the week and maybe five hours or more during the weekends.

Next, take the exam syllabus and write down how many exams (Courses) and the content of the various courses. Once this is completed, spread the breakdown over the month period before the exams actually begin.

Always remember you may want to give some subjects more study time than others.

You’ll have to find a balance that you feel comfortable with and that will suit you best.

Additionally, after every topic thoroughly studied, pick up the practice questions based on the topic studied in our member’s area and solve.

After solving it, you can again access the solutions in the member’s area to compare with yours. This will help relieve your anxiety and boost your confidence on every topic studied.

You may have already known that ICAN has updated their syllabus which have taken effect this November 2019 diet.

In order for you to get yourself fully prepared for the exams,

There are some key elements you need to be aware of in this new syllabus…

One of the good news about the ICAN new syllabus is that ICAN has signed a consensus agreement with other foreign Chartered Institutes.

What this means is that, with your ICAN (ACA) you can be certified without writing any exam for the following; Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

All you need is just few years of working experience and, yes, without writing any exams.

In addition to that;

• In Financial Reporting and Corporate Reporting, there are some IFRS accounting standards that were not effective in the old syllabus which will be included in the new syllabus.
Besides that, few new ones just released are going to be tested now.

• Some of the key elements in Quantitative Techniques (QA) that have been scraped and has been added to Performance Management and Case Study.

• In the exams structure, nothing changes in foundation, but in Skills and Professional, question one is now compulsory which is going to be 40marks and that question one in every diet will come from the Core Topic Area.

• If you wrote Foundation last diet and you are to move to Skill level now, you are allowed to combine taxation which has been moved to foundation with the skill courses in your exams.

• In Case Study, you will be given a Case two weeks to the exams for proper study.
Please note that, it’s the case you are going to be given and not the question and requirement, the question and will be given to students on the day of the exams.
Also the maximum pages now for case study is 30 pages as against the previous 15 pages.


• Please note that what the examiner will be testing for in your Case Study is your analytical skills, which means that at the end of your analysis or answers, you are expected to give summary.

• Marking of exams now is going to be onscreen marking which means that it’s going to take a minimum time for ICAN to release their results. To that effect, there will now be three diets in a year which is going to be March, July and November.

• Registration for the exams will no longer be allowed at the last minutes of the exams as there will now be a deadline for registration. Which means after the deadline, ICAN will accept your payment but will not allow you to sit for the exams for the diet but will instead, carry the registration over to the next diet.

Please note that according to ICAN; as they have simplified things for the students with the Core Topic Areas for each subject which is going to be 40% of your total scores, the marking scheme now will be stricter.

1. Practice, Practice & More Practice


It is impossible to study calculation subjects properly by just reading and listening. To study calculation courses, you have to roll up your sleeves and actually solve some problems.

The more you practice answering the calculation problems, the better.

Each problem has its own characteristics and it’s important to have solved it in numerous ways before tackling the exam.

There is no escaping this reality, to do well in a calculation exam,
you need to have solved a LOT of problems beforehand.

2. Review Errors

When you’re practicing with the problems (questions), it’s important to –

Work Through the Process for each Solution.

If you have made any mistakes, you should review them and understand where your problem-solving skills let you down.

Understanding how you approached the problem and where you went wrong is a great way of becoming stronger and avoiding the same mistakes in the future.

3. Master the Key Concepts


Do not try to memorize the processes.

This is counter-productive. It is much better and rewarding in the long-run to focus on understanding
the process and logic that is involved. This will help you understand how you should approach such problems in the future.

Remember that calculation subject is SEQUENTIAL, so it’s important to have a firm understanding of the key concepts that forms the basis for a topic before moving on to work on a more complex solutions which are based on understanding the basics.

Let’s continue on the outcome of the research.

These are the suggested activities that has turned the so called “ dull child” to smart and brilliant child.

1. WHILE TEACHING YOUR CHILD ,DON’T LET HIM/HER GET YOU FRUSTRATED:

When kids are having a hard time with homework or a school-related subject, they often explode with anger. Which makes the parent or teacher wonder “What did I do wrong?”

“You didn’t necessarily do anything,” Michael Thompson, Ph.D. advises

“sometimes when kids feel misunderstood at school or frustrated by a subject they get angry or provoke the parent — as a way of making you feel as helpless

or angry as they feel. It’s almost like your child is saying ‘would you hold my hopelessness for a while?’

Or

‘I need you to feel what I am going through, so I am going to make you angry.'”

The secret is that you must not react the way the child expected you to react, if you do, the child might lose interest in learning from you and if that happens, not matter you teach the child, he/she won’t understand.

Just keep your cool.

Then you have to make the child to know that you understand his frustration and you are willing to help. The child will sense that and will have open mind when you are teaching him.

Even if the child is perceived as being dull, an open mind to your teachings could lead him/her to become smart.

Kids are so smart, don’t let them outsmart you.

A perfect example of this was Akin, my neighbor’s son. The family has tagged him as the ‘black sheep in the family’ because he is not performing well academically but his siblings were the best in their respective classes.

His teacher has complained bitterly about his attitude, how he is always feeling frustrated because he was not understanding mathematics

Most times Akin was always sent out of the class.

His father eventually changed his school and suddenly everything changed. His new teacher had to address Akin’s attitude of feeling frustrated when learning and always told him to calm down that he will understand but it will take a gradual process.

The teacher told Akin to always be happy excited during lessons. Even though it took up to 5 months for Akin to start picking interest in Mathematics , he eventually became an average student.
What we noticed was that Akin loves his teacher and would say “My formal teacher understand mathematic better than my new teacher, but my new teacher made me have interest in Mathematics because he understands my weakness and helped to make me stronger”


P.S: There isn't necessarily one right learning style. By helping your child discover his preferred learning styles, could improve his or her learning rate.

I had a discussion with a class teacher who told me that some children are just naturally dull and that no matter how you teach them they will not just understand.

This got me thinking, so I did an eight month research on this issue.

I discovered that there are various researches on this topic already. One of the researches shows the reply of some randomly selected professional teachers, see their reply below;


To teach children who are somewhat dull but having a good brain, first we need to get along with them well. They have to feel comfortable in our presence only then they will open up and feel free and this makes the teacher and the student to establish a good relationship. Once a good rapport has been established the student can learn very well.


Every learner represents potential. It is up to the teacher to examine the material that needs to be mastered and like a skilled tailor create the learning condition in which all students will gain knowledge and be successful in gaining greater abilities.


You should make sure that your student is completely involved in the given task. It is your responsibility to divert his attention to the learning material. If you estimate the mental capability of a child accurately, it becomes very easy to provide him a well-tailored personalized program of learning. Definitely it will fascinate the child to a level suitable to learn.


Practically, you should determine which type of intelligence the student has( according to the Multiple Intelligence Theory); logical, natural..etc. Then, choose some activities or games suitable for his intelligence...This could perfectly work as a good start.


I don’t want to share the whole teachers’ feedback, so let’s examine these four feedbacks;

The valid point in the feedbacks show that the teachers approach is very important.

THE TEACHERS APPROACH: if a teacher noticed that a child is not performing well academically, it means that child requires special attention and the teaching approach needs to change for that child to start understanding well, but the teacher must first understand the child.

You are wondering that how many students a teacher can be able to attend to. I also wondered.

For a dull child, you can actually get a private teacher or use a different approach like using video tutorial.

1. TRY NOT TO GO OVER THE EXAM QUESTIONS:

On our ICAN Telegram platform, I saw a student saying that there was an error in one of the questions…….. You have already written the exams, nothing can be done about that, just pray for God’s favour.


Do not go home and start checking your textbooks for the correct answer to the exam questions. This will only increase tension and anxiety. You have written the exam, so put your mind at rest.


When I was in the hostel, back in the university, my roommate checked all the correct answers to the exam questions, he shouted “Mogbe oo ” that is, “I am finished ooo” and he fainted.
I guess he noticed that he didn’t do well.


But to our surprise, he passed that exam.


Why put yourself under unnecessary stress and tension? You have done your best, so leave the rest for God and the examiner.
