I was talking to a student
who showed interest in the Accounting Package

Asked how he coped with combining

he said: ‘’It’s all about setting ones’ priority right!

since my 100-Level I got engaged in

and then ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants).

3. HAVE A DAILY PLAN FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO, AT WORK, HOME AND DURING YOUR STUDY TIME.

Consider writing down the things that must get completed in order for
that day to be productive. The reason you need to write them down
is so that you can be organized and not be overwhelmed.
Don’t let any impromptu task to easily hijack your plan, except if it is an emergency.

to begin a task as it does to actually complete it?
Since it takes some time to find the drive to begin,
distractions could destroy your productivity in a hurry.
The simple act of beginning to work already takes some time,
so it’s important to avoid distractions by having a daily To-Do List.

“WAEC Result is out.” Someone said

Immediately I heard this, my heart started racing on this day. I could not eat or sleep because I’ve been hearing all kinds of news.

Some people failed woefully, some passed but failed either Mathematics or English, some people barely made it past five credits. Bad news everywhere!

My parents were just hoping and praying I passed all my WAEC papers.

I refused to check my result on time because my cousin told me he failed two important subject and his parents almost ‘skinned him alive’. In fact, he confessed to me that his life was over.

In this age of technological advancement,


there is a limit to how an auditor can effectively


audit IT personnels without CISA.


So if all companies want to go the technology way because


it increases productivity and profit,


then all auditor should be able to audit the technological way too.



So for me, I wanted to be able to:


 Evaluate risk management practices


 Evaluate the value of the IT control framework

.
 Evaluate IT policies, standards, processes and procedures within the organization.


 Manage and monitor IT personnel.


In order words, I not only wanted to be an auditor but I wanted to be an IT auditor.



After I became a member of ISACA,


there was an opening at the organization where I worked,


the chief auditor resigned.


So the directors decided to do an in-house recruitment instead of outsourcing since


they knew some of us where chartered.



At the interview, I presented to the board how


I was going to establish audit controls within the organization


I also pointed out to them some leakages and


the sources of those leakages,


I presented some technology controls which


I suggested were to be adopted in the IT department of our organization


in order to curtail some of the excesses.



By the time I finished the presentation,


they told me right there that I had the job even though


they interviewed the others.





That was how I became the Chief auditor of my company


which more than tripled my income.

There are lots of activities that could act as distraction whenever
you are revisiting for the fourth coming ICAN exams,
funny enough some of these distractions might be unavoidable.
But, you can actually minimize distraction.

Most of the time, notifications from electronic devices
(phone, tablet, laptops, desktop and others) only add to the distraction.
In fact, most of us are so used to getting interrupted while studying,
even when there is no notification on our phone, we still check just to be sure.
Seems we have been configured to be distracted…… smile!!!
There are other forms of distractions at work and at home….. we will discuss them all.


These tips may help you to minimize distraction, increase your
focus and assimilation while revising.

1. TURN OFF THE DISTRACTIONS
You may want to turn off all notifications from smartphones and
desktops applications. Consider checking email only four times per day and
handling each inquiry only once.
Controlling your devices and not having that technology control you,
may help reduce distractions and increase your focus and level of assimilation.
You have spent a lot for this exam, so don’t allow anything to deprive you of SUCCESS this diet.

There are two reasons why IT auditors should use General Audit Software (GAS) products, such as Audit Command Language (ACL).
Firstly, there is the focus on fraud in recent years, according to the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE) and its 2009 "Report to the Nation" survey on fraud, more than 60 percent of all frauds are detected either by a tip or by accident. While internal audit has moved up on the list, there is clearly room for more proactive anti fraud programs.
Secondly, is that the demands on IT and internal auditors are increasing and auditors will need to become more efficient to fulfill all of the responsibilities and tasks assigned to them, and having the knowledge on Audit Command Language is one way to do so.
This helps you to reduce the time you use to audit and also enable you to conduct your activities in a most efficient manner.
Using ACL empowers you as an auditor to possibly have a better sense of direction in your audit procedures.
You will be able to perform some audit procedures to gain an understanding of the data (e.g., using PROFILE, STATISTICS commands in ACL). During these procedures,
You will be able to spot an anomaly or red flag
(e.g., negative amounts where there should be none).
The data in ACL are locked down as read-only.
There is no chance for the auditor to inadvertently change the data.
This inadvertent risk is much higher for IT auditors who choose to use a spreadsheet for analyzing and presenting transactions. While one can lock cells or sheets in Microsoft Excel, there is still the possibility of human error. It is almost non-existent in ACL.

I want to put it differently, the best time to repair a leaking roof is before the rain start to fall.
One of the main keys to success is early preparation.
You will never go wrong when you start preparing for
something early. Many students face the disappointment of
failing the exams on their first trial while only a handful get
the satisfaction of passing all of the exams on their first attempt.
So, how do we ensure a 100% success in the exam on
our first sitting in the exams?

Well, the answer is to start preparing for it early!
Early preparation provides us with some flexibility in our study
schedule and allows room for any distraction such as
unpredictable events. As humans, we are all

3. I always recommend that you look for ways of sharing with colleagues, what you already know about the subject matter. It is the greatest secrete of retaining knowledge.

4. Speak positively to yourself, assure yourself that you are capable of making it and you will.

6. Last but not the least, think success!! Success!! and success!! all the way.

At the beginning of last two month (December), I reviewed all my goals for the new year and realized that even though I have not achieved as much as I stated in my last new year resolution, yet I’m grateful.

Out of the 7 goals I planned to achieve last year, I have only achieved 1 and I failed at the remaining 6.

Initially I so was discouraged, but I decided to look inward and learn from my mistakes. So, I listed all the things that I have failed at last year, reviewed what went wrong and mapped out the possible solutions.

I decided to work on my failures by trying to achieve one more goal and just in the space of one month (January) I was able to achieve the goal.

For the month of Feburary, I have decided to achieve one more goal.

in preparing for your CIS exams with some tips to aid you achieve that.

Today, we will be looking at why self-discipline is
very crucial for your exams preparations.

The Merriam-Webster defines self-discipline as the
“correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement.”

This definition clearly shows the importance of self-discipline.

It implies that we have to regulate ourselves or
stop ourselves from certain behaviors if we are to improve.

Relating this to studying, it clearly means that
we have to stop certain things or take up new things while
studying so as to get the positive result we want.

Self-discipline also helps in increasing your self-esteem because
you are now able to achieve the goals you set for yourself.
With this, you get a boost in your confidence.
Basically, there are four major distractions all
professional students are faced with when trying to prepare for an exam.

They include; your work, friends, social media, family, and even too much of sleep…

Most of which are very important to your individual and family life.
But how do you manage some of these very important routines
in your life and still discipline yourself enough to
adequately prepare for your CIS exams

In addition to the tips I gave in the part one of
how to discipline yourself for your exams preparations,

The next step you need to take is to ensure that you start from small…

As the popular saying goes “Do not neglect little beginnings”
Self-discipline is not what you are born with. Self-discipline is
among the few virtues that you learn until it becomes part of you.

Like I mentioned in the first article;
why you should stop the habit of perfect timing,
you do not really need to wait until when you are fully ready and
prepared because that might not happen
anytime soon if at all it’s going to happen.

Starting small entails that you give yourself
a little target at a time and as you accomplish
those ones, you increase the task and set higher study goals for yourself.
If you continue like this, you will see that self-discipline is
not just to study for your exams but applying it to
other aspects of your life becomes easier.

If you want to be disciplined when reading,
try reading for 30 minutes without any form of
distraction and with maximum concentration.

When you have accomplished that, be happy and
commend yourself as you have started climbing the
ladder of self-discipline aiming at the top.

Lastly, ensure to keep to your study schedules;
as much as it is important to plan your daily study
routines, it is much more important to keep to the schedule.

Don’t plan your reading schedule and tell yourself
“I’m not sure I will be able to meet up with my studies today because of …,
so let me push it to tomorrow.”

As soon as you start making decisions to be
skipping your daily reading schedule,
your enthusiasm to practice self-discipline for effective study will drop.

Before you know it, you will be back to square one
where you were before; procrastinating on your exams preparations.

If you plan your study schedule, ensure to stick to it on
daily basis irrespective of your distractions. But if for
inevitable reason you skip a session,
try as much as possible to schedule a makeup time for it.
That way your level of enthusiasm of self-disciplining yourself will remain intact.

And much more importantly, try to acknowledge your victory…
When you are able to accomplish a certain task you give to yourself,
commend yourself, give yourself smiles, acknowledge yourself.

Self-encouragement and commendment helps to tell
yourself that you are fit for the task ahead even if they might seem tougher.

This is because as you journey through the
school of self-discipline, taking cognizance of
small victory and acknowledgment is important.

When I spoke with Ese in 2017 on the need for his own personal development, he gave a pompous reply

The Manager got to know about this and confronted the MD that the young man promotion was too early.

By the next month, the MD made the young guy the Branch head- he was placed over ‘Manager’ Ese.

Success means having the courage, the determination, and
the will to become the person you believe you are meant to be.


Here was my routine: wake up, do my work, watch TV, and go to bed.
This was a regular day in my life not long ago.
It was not too eventful and not challenging,
and to be honest, the less challenging it was,
the less stress there was for me—at least that was what I thought.


I had been working in this small company for a few years,
and my income was not up to where I had wanted it to be.
In fact, it was pretty far away from the amount I had floating around in my head.
But still, I went through the same motions every day and was okay with it.
This was because i will resume to work by 9:30am and close by 4:00pm, at times 3:30Pm.
And the funny part is that I was always hoping that I will one day reach that amount.


I am a big believer in taking action to CREATE THE LIFE YOU WANT,
and at that point I thought I was taking action.
That wasn’t true, but a lie I was telling myself in order to
remain in my comfort zone that I was.


Occasionally, big ideas on how I can develop myself
and pave way for success will come floating in my head,
but I kept brushing those ideas off because they were outside of
my comfort zone.


Then one day,
I came across a book that gave me what i called; “The Success Principles”.
I learned that if I was ever going to see a change
in my career and life, I had to PUSH OUTSIDE MY COMFORT ZONE.
I had to take the risks that scared me and
FACE MY FEARS heads-on in order to realize
what I was capable of and what I could accomplish.


I now realize that I was stressed about not succeeding,
in large part because
I was unwilling to get uncomfortable.
It was when I realized this and started facing
my fears squarely. I started tackling and doing what I knew
will bring me glory that my life changed tremendously.


I know that the payoff of stepping out of your comfort zone is
worth the initial nervousness that will be whispering,
‘Get out of here and go back to what feels familiar and safe.’
But it’s what you must do,
if you must achieve that career dreams to better your life and that of your family.

Here are few things that may be holding you back from doing something that will bring you glory;

The Feelings of Rejection: Rejection can lead you to feel like you’re not good enough,
since it often leads to criticism, from yourself or someone else.
Use this criticism to learn how you can improve in order to succeed.
Once you know what you have to develop on,
you can work on those areas and try again.
If you keep learning and growing, you will succeed.

For instance, if you sit for an exams and
failed because your performances were low, you could easily feel like
an incompetent person who can’t get what he want,
then you give up, and never attempt the exams again.
Or you can take the failure, learn from it, and come back stronger.
There’s literally nowhere to go but up.
Learn all you can about the exams (or whatever it is you do).
With some practice and persistence, you will eventually pass your exams even better.
A little rejection is inevitable,
but if you’re willing to keep trying, you will see both progress and results.

Fear: Fear holds so many people back in life.
Fear of the outcome, fear of the unknown, fear of not being good enough,
and fear of failing—we go through them all.
You can pile fear on top of fear until eventually you find it easier to just
forget the whole idea and do something that makes you comfortable.
Fear stems from our beliefs about ourselves,
which come from our experiences and feedback
from family and friends. If you have had a negative experience with something,
then you may fear experiencing that negative feeling again.
If you have been told that you can’t do something,
then you might be fearful that you really can’t do it.
You need to remove these limiting beliefs and
push past the fear. You can do this
by using positive affirmations about yourself
and consistently using positive self-talk to boost up your confidence level.
It also helps to surround yourself with people
who believe in you and your abilities and push you forward to face your fears.


Inability: Sometimes we know that we can’t do something,
and sometimes we have tried to do something before and failed.
For instance, if you have never tried swimming before,
taking on the challenge of swimming across a lake may seem unrealistic.
On the other hand, if you have tried to swim across the lake before and failed,
then you may hold the belief that you just can’t do it.


Fortunately for us, inability is something that everyone can push past.
With enough effort, you can learn almost anything you set your mind to.
You just have to find the information or help and start learning and practicing.
You just have to start small and keep going…

This affected my education till Senior Secondary School,
even when I became wiser and knew that it was
from a place of love.
By then it was a bit late because I had failed
a lot and repeated some classes.

This got me thinking…
Maybe if she had paid attention to the problem
and not me, I would be more motivated
to change or do better .

Also

My aunt’s son Seun was very stubborn
he didn’t like to read at all. Anytime his mum asked him
to read, he would practically hit his leg on the floor and grumbled.

When my aunty noticed this
she spoke to him calmly to understand
what the real problem was
and she addressed the reason he was always
reluctant to study.
With this, he became motivated and was ready
to learn because he didn’t feel like he was attacked.

As an educationist, I have discovered
that the problem with most children and teenager
is they feel unmotivated to read.
But if you make the problem all about them
and not seeking to know the problem and
why they act the way they act,
they will continue to throw tantrums and be more difficult

This is how you can go about it
Let your child know that you care about
who he or she is as a person

Connect with your child over things
that interests him or her (this works a lot)
and then bring up the conversation about the problem
and how you can both find solution to it
Discuss their favourite hobbies with them

This will help your child to understand that
while he or she may be struggling, you’ll be there the entire way.
And this feeling will actually motivate your child
to do better I their education

The New Financial Bill has the following strategic objectives:

• Reforming domestic tax laws to align with global best practices.

• Raising revenues for government.

• Quite significantly, the Finance Bill seeks to introduce sweeping changes to the laws covering seven different tax laws. This publication examines the implications of the proposed changes on various sectors.


Below are some of the important details in the bill you should know about:

• Excess dividend tax to apply only to untaxed distributions other than profits specifically exempted from tax and franked investment income

• Small businesses with turnover less than N25m to be exempted from Companies Income Tax


• A lower CIT rate of 20% to apply to medium-sized companies with turnover between N25m and N100m

• Commencement and cessation rules modified to eliminate overlaps and gaps to avoid double taxation and complication during commencement

• Minimum tax provisions amended to 0.5% of turnover and exemption only applies to small companies (less than 25m turnover), so non-resident companies will now pay minimum tax

• Insurance companies can now carry forward tax losses indefinitely, deduct reserve for unexpired risks on time apportionment bases while special minimum tax for insurance has been abolished

• Bonus of 2% of tax payable (medium-sized companies) and 1% for large companies for early payment of CIT

• Introduction of thin capitalization of 30% of EBITDA for interest deductibility. Any excess deduction can be carried forward for 5 years

• Deemed tax presence for non-residents with respect to imported technical and management services now taxable at a final WHT rate of 10%

• Any expense incurred to earn exempt income now specifically disallowed as a deduction against other taxable income

• Dividend distributed from petroleum profits now to suffer 10% withholding tax


But what has all the above got to do with your CITN career?

1. Every worker will now pay tax……………. Banks will now request for Tax Identification Number (TIN) before opening bank accounts for individuals, while existing account holders must provide their TIN to continue operating their accounts?..... It means your service is highly needed now.

2. Company must remit their tax before due date …………………. They need a certified Chartered Tax Practitioner to help the do this…. They need you.

3. CITN Professional Qualification is one of the pre-requisites for promotion to senior administrative cadre in the states Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Inland Revenue.

But what causes exam anxiety?

Exam anxiety can be caused by a number of things
1. A history of poor exam outcomes. If you have done poorly in an exam before,
either because you didn't study well enough or because you were so anxious,
you couldn't remember the answers, this can cause even more anxiety
and a negative attitude every time you have to take another exam.

2. Being unprepared. If you didn't study at all
or didn't study well enough, this can add to your feeling of anxiety.

3. Being afraid of failure. If you connect your sense of self-worth to your exam scores,
The pressure you put on yourself can cause severe test anxiety.
So now that you know the causes of exam anxiety,
How do you overcome this as you prepare November exams.

1. Make sure you're prepared. That means studying for the exam early
Until you feel comfortable with the material.
Don't wait until the night before. Being prepared will boost your confidence,
Which will lessen your exam anxiety, solving enough past questions too helps a lot.

2. Remove all negative thoughts. If you start to feel anxious or have negative thoughts,

"I didn't study hard enough,"
"I'm not sure I'm ready"
Push those thoughts away and replace them with positive thoughts.

can go far in helping to manage your stress level when preparing for your exams.

It happened that I went for my senior colleague's 50th birthday,
he introduced me to their only child Ifeanyi.
Ifeanyi is 20 years old, a final year student in the university and
he has just completed his professional level in ICAN.
I was really surprised that at 20 years, Ifeanyi was already Chartered.


His father told me that Ifeanyi started his ICAN journey through ATS
immediately after he finished secondary school.
Ifeanyi's parent were able to guide him through his
career journey because they are well informed.


My case was different,


I became a Chartered Accountant at the age of 36,
even though it looks like it was late, well I still thank God for his grace.
Maybe if I had a mentor or parent to direct me through

I wrote Jamb the year I finished secondary school but failed,
so I had to wait for another year, the next year I passed Jamb but

ICAN exams due to the nature of my job, I was
always very busy even on weekends, so I could not attend classes.


I had to force myself to write ICAN exams because
when had a new CEO, everything changed suddenly;
I felt humiliated, the junior staffs were all promoted
ahead of me and one of them was made the head of the department.
The company also came up with the policy that
it is compulsory for all Accountants to be Chartered.

I am not writing this in regret, but for all parents to learn how

As the exam is approaching,
there is tendency that you are feeling stress out,
exhausted,
