It's so unfortunate that you tag those who studied the humanities as mentally lazy. I bet my life that you cannot survive a semester in English and Literary Studies, History, and even Library and Information Science.

Some of you console yourselves, after raking in a pass or a third class degree, with the idea that you read Engineering or other Science Courses. That is just sad and hints at a fundamentally flawed sense of self esteem.

There is a reason why people study the Humanities and Social Sciences. Everyone is not cut out for science. Everyone is not a robot that crams useless equations, formulae, chemical signs, etc, that they cannot translate into real life technological innovations. As an Engineer, which I believe you are, what have you done to better the technological field in Nigeria? Have you designed anything useful? How wealthy are you? Are you wealthier or more renowned than Wole Soyinka? Is there even any Engineer that is more renowned than Chinua Achebe (who, if I may add, left Medicine and Surgery to study English)? How many Nigerian National Order of Merits award have Engineers won in Nigeria?

Stop feeding your ego with bunkum. Courses in the Humanities are not easy. Many of you criticising English here cannot survive a day of Shakespeare and a bout of Chomskyan Syntax. Can you apply theory to a text? Can you survive a wave of Soyinka and Okigbo? Can you even comprehend the bulk of history those in the Humanities encounter? English is highly relevant in modern Nigeria. Our official language is English and there are more than a thousand opportunities for those who read and have a deep passion for the course.

Without appearing too immodest, I make more money than many scientists and engineers, and I daresay, even you. What I practise has everything to do with what I read and I am into a wide range of critical sectors. The figure I make every daily on Fiverr as an English Graduate is enough to open an Engineering firm and employ Engineers if I wanted to.

And yes, English graduates and others from the Humanities can work in Shell or Chevron as PR officers, administrative officers, official writers, and in many other capacities. Infact, they can work virtually ANYWHERE and they have a place in EVERY firm you can think of. Or is it as Diplomats? Publishers? Librarians? Copyeditors? Content Writers? Social Media Influencers? Creative Writers? Name it!

Don't ever in your entire life refer to graduates of English or of any other course in the Humanities and Social Sciences as mentally lazy. In fact, for ever conceiving of such anomalous thought, you have become the mentally lazy youth whose view is limited and who feeds his miniature ego with delusions of grandeur. Truly great people do not belittle others to make themselves appear great. Change your ways now or your mental laziness will take its toll on you.
