A British teacher who tried to cling onto the leg of a Cambridge University student before she jumped to her death from a plane has been hailed "Wonder Woman".

Ruth Johnson was tonight identified as one of the people who tried in vain to stop Alana Cutland, 19, from plummeting 3,700ft out the aircraft as it flew above Madagascar.

Ms Johnson is currently trying to come to terms with what she witnessed.

The 51-year-old, who lives in Banbury, Oxfordshire, where she teaches at the £8,000-a-term Winchester House School, frantically tried to hold onto the teen for several minutes as half her body hung out the plane.

Tragically Alana, from Milton Keynes, slipped from her grasp.Local police chief Spinola Nomenjanahary reportedly said the teacher had screamed "come back, come back" as she had tried to save her.

He is said to have added: "Ruth said it all happened so fast she was lucky to even catch hold of her leg in time".

The teen's body has not yet been found and her family believe she was hallucinating on prescription drugs and didn't intend to kill herself.

Ms Johnson's bravery has now been described as "stunning" by her husband Matthew Smith.

He told the Daily Mail: "She's our Wonder Woman. We are all so proud of her.

A nurse has revealed how she lost both of her legs and an arm after a chesty cough turned into sepsis.

Jayne Carpenter, 51, began coughing up phlegm in April 2016 and within a few days she was short of breath and struggling to walk.

But despite getting increasingly ill she didn't go to the doctors because she 'didn't want to make a fuss'.

When she finally visited her GP at 9am on the morning of May 1 she was advised to go to A&E but they had no idea she had the early stages of deadly sepsis.By 11am, Mrs Carpenter, from Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, was diagnosed with pneumonia and severe sepsis and rushed to intensive care.

Her body had overreacted to the flu and started stacking its own organs and tissues.

By midnight, she slipped into a coma when her organs started to fail due to septic shock.

Her blood pressure had dropped to a dangerously low level because of the sepsis - a violent immune response to an infection.

She'd developed small blood clots in her blood vessels, which prevented blood flowing to her fingers, hands, arms and legs.

The Guardian newspaper was today branded 'inhumane' after claiming David Cameron's wealth and status meant he only suffered 'privileged pain' when his disabled son Ivan died aged six.

The former Prime Minister's new autobiography 'For The Record' says that he and his wife Samantha were plunged into 'darkness' when their eldest child passed away in 2009.

Mr Cameron revealed that his son suffered near-constant seizures from birth - some lasting hours - before succumbing to organ failure shortly before his seventh birthday.But in response to his memoirs, the Guardian's leader column, written by an unnamed senior editor, said today: 'Mr Cameron has known pain and failure in his life but it has always been limited failure and privileged pain'.

It added: 'Had he been trying to get the system to look after a dying parent rather than a dying child, he might have understood a little of the damage that his policies have done'.

The opinion piece was published in the newspaper this morning before 'privileged pain' was deleted completely from later editions. It was also amended online after an uproar over the use of the phrase.

A spokesman for the newspaper has also issued an apology and said: 'The original version of this editorial posted online fell far short of our standards. It has now been amended, and we apologise completely' - but did not say sorry directly to Mr Cameron.

The newspaper is under fire today and was accused of lacking 'humanity' and 'empathy' for the plight of Ivan Cameron and his bereft family.

A family are at ‘rock bottom’ after thieves ransacked their home and stole a life-saving medical pump used to keep their disabled three-year-old alive. Toddler Emily Anderson has cerebral palsy and cannot eat or drink, relying on the pump to get food into her stomach. Her parents say that without the back-up pump her life is now ‘at risk’ and they are pleading for its return. Paula Ratcliffe and John Anderson were at Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital at the time of the break-in, caring for their baby daughter Mia, who is just seven weeks old and has a rare life-threatening condition herself. Speaking from Mia’s bedside, Paula said: ‘I’m just disgusted. Whoever did this is the lowest of the low and I just can’t believe someone would do this to us.She said the family, from Doncaster, Yorkshire, are now ‘living on the edge’ as the pump they do have only has a 12-hour battery life which means they are terrified of it breaking down. Paula said: ‘If the person who did it has a heart then they’d return it. It doesn’t have any use to anyone else.’ The Sick Children’s Trust has funded the family’s stay at accommodation near to the hospital since Mia was born in August while they juggle caring for Emily and their two older children, Katie, 15 and Charlotte, 11, while being in hospital with their new baby.

A south London mother has told of her son’s struggle to rebuild his life after he was stabbed in a random attack.

Brett Connolly, 26, was heading home after seeing a friend when he was brutally knifed outside a neighbour’s house in Rock Close, Mitcham.

He was rushed to hospital where doctors initially gave him a two per cent chance of survival, his mum told the Standard.

He has made a “miraculous” physical recovery since the stabbing on July 23 but is finding it harder and harder to cope psychologically, Felicity Connolly, 66, explained."Horrific doesn’t come close to describing what he’s been through,” she said.

He was stabbed through the cheek, down the back of his throat and again in his leg with a Rambo knife. He can’t speak properly at the moment because his voice box has been damaged, he can’t eat solid foods and he can’t work.

“There’s a long road ahead in terms of getting him physically back on track, but what we’re really focused on is getting him help to tackle his PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).”

Ms Connolly and her family are raising money to get private counselling for the dad-of-one, who is fighting to come to terms with what happened to him.

“The whole thing was such a shock. This is a close knit neighbourhood - we’ve never had any problems with violence. Brett just can’t make sense of it.”

“He’s never been affiliated with gangs or anything like that. He’s had a job ever since he left college and has always just been friendly and laid back with everyone.”

The 66-year-old said her son has been unable to get the urgent mental health support he needs due to long waiting times for specialist care.

An "out of control" teenager has been jailed for stabbing a father-of-four in the chest who was trying to protect his son.

Shaun Pilkington, 18, of Eastbourne Road, Southport, was sentenced to four years and 10 months in prison after pleading guilty to knifing a dad, William Hughes, in the chest earlier this year on April 19.

Mr Hughes, 34, previously told the ECHO he thought he was going to die from the attack , on Birch Street, Southport.

Sentencing, Judge Andrew Menary, QC, said Pilkington was "dangerous" and someone who "responds aggressively whenever his behaviour is challenged".Liverpool Crown Court heard how Pilkington, who appeared via video link from HMP Altcourse, had threatened to stab Mr Hughes' teenage son earlier on the day of the attack.

Simon Duncan, prosecuting, said: "Mr Hughes' son saw the defendant at about 4pm and he [Pilkington] said 'I'm going to stab you up'."

He added: "He understandably called his father."

Mr Duncan said Pilkington and other youths encountered Mr Hughes later in the day, at about 7.40pm, and "stared across at him", before getting off his push-bike and telling the doting dad he had a knife on him.

After Mr Hughes told him to stay away, Pilkington reached into his hoody to pull out a small knife.

The teen then lunged at Mr Hughes and stabbed him in his chest, above his lung.

A young footballer died under the wheels of an express train just 12 hours after he broke off his romance with his girlfriend over texts he found on her phone.

Jacob Standbridge, 21, stepped in front of the high speed passenger locomotive after he texted his mother saying: 'I love you mum so much. Thank you for everything you have done for me. I'm so sorry'.

Jacob - known as Jake - suffered multiple injuries in the 6.30am impact on October 13 last year at Sandbach railway station in Cheshire and died at the scene.

He had split up with Ciera Barnes the previous evening after he became upset about texts he found on her phone but a coroner ruled it was not clear whether he intended to take his own life.

An inquest heard Jacob, a sports teacher, from Sandbach had played in midfield for the Stoke City Academy and other clubs then after studying a BTECH in sports management was offered a job providing sports training programs for local schools.He had intended to propose to Ciera during a trip to New York and the pair bought a house together. But an inquest heard their relationship became troubled after he began taking steroid injections then coming off them.

His mother Karen told the Warrington hearing: 'Sometime in January 2016 Jacob met Ciera, although he had had lots of casual girlfriends she was his first love and became part of the family.

'But it seemed to be in the last seven to eight weeks of his life that things with Ciera became rocky, and this coincided with the period he started to use steroid injections.

'He felt she had changed and didn't love him anymore. He once broke down in front of me and told me that he loved Ciera but she was messing with his head. I reassured him that ups and downs were part of a relationship.

'When he talked about his relationship with Ciera at times I felt that he was building it up in his mind. What hurt him most was disloyalty. He was very loyal to friends, family and girlfriends and I think that is the thing he valued above everything else really.

A mum has relived the horrendous ordeal of witnessing her baby son fight for his life after contracting sepsis.

Austin Henry, who was born with just one partially-functioning kidney, was just eight months old when he became seriously unwell.

The vulnerable tot spent eight days in intensive care in hospital where doctors and nurses tried desperately to save him.

"The memory of seeing him with all these machines and wires attached to his tiny body still haunts me," said his mum Laura, 33."I had to consider the fact that we might lose him, but I didn't want to ask because I was too scared that the answer to my question would be 'yes'.

"That period just felt like we were in some kind of strange dream where we had no idea what would come next."

Laura, from Baglan, Neath Port Talbot, found out Austin had problems with his kidneys during her 20-week pregnancy scan.

She was booked in for a cesarean section at the University Hospital of Wales , Cardiff, in early January - but that all changed when she began having contractions at her auntie's dinner table on Christmas Day in 2016."I was timing my contractions on my phone underneath the table while 14 of my relatives were eating. They didn't twig what I was doing," she said.

"I told my husband James not to drink anymore alcohol just in case. When I got onto the sofa the contractions started getting more intense and I knew I'd need to get to hospital."

Laura and James made the trip to Singleton Hospital in Swansea where an emergency cesarean was carried out that same evening.

"It was quite a surreal situation. I'd been celebrating Christmas hours earlier, and now I was lying on the bed barely able to move my head after my epidural," she said.

A US husband has spoken out over the murder-suicide involving his wife and his mistress, revealing the last text messages she sent him moments before their deaths.

In 2018, Jennair Gerardot’s life was turned upside down when she discovered her husband of more than 20 years, Mark Gerardot, was having an affair with a younger woman.

Enraged by her husband’s betrayal, she embarked on a secretive mission to uncover the extent of her husband’s affair which lead her to kill both his lover, Meredith Chapman, and herself.

“There were emails and text messages indicating what she planned to do,” Radnor Township Police Superintendent William Colarulo said in a news conference.

In a revealing interview, Mark told US TV Network ABC’s 20/20 how the affair played out and ended with his wife sending him disturbing texts before committing the crime.

After their marriage was in a rut and Jennair had lost her job in 2017, Mark explained that they moved to Delaware for a fresh start.

Mark found work at the University of Delaware while his wife remained in South Carolina for a month-and-a-half as she arranged their home to be rented out.At his new job, Mark immediately hit it off with his colleague, Meredith Chapman, who was 15 years younger and also married.

Weeks later they expressed their feelings for each other and started having a secret affair.

When Jennair arrived in Delaware, she knew something was up and pressed her husband about her suspicions.

“She finally asked me, ‘What is up with you? You’re acting different’,” Mark told 20/20.

“She said specifically, ‘It’s Meredith, isn’t it?’”

Doctors at the Battor Catholic Hospital have been forced to perform an emergency surgical procedure to deliver a 13-year-old girl who was defiled, impregnated and left with life threatening condition, of a baby girl.

For 34 weeks, the girl never attended antenatal clinic and survived on only one cedi a day, causing her to develop preeclampsia in its worse form, a medical condition doctors explained threatened her life with stroke and death.

Mary (not her real name) was immobilised by her condition; her legs and feet became heavily swollen.

“The young girl came at the right time,” Dr Bernard Atuguba, the obstetrician and gynecologist specialist who examined and diagnosed Mary, told our correspondent Josephine Frempong.According to the medical director, her BP was “very high” and she had “protein in her urine”, for which reason they had “deliver her within the shortest possible time”.

“She was immediately prepared for theatre after her BP was controlled, given medication to control seizures before performing a CS to deliver the girl of a baby girl”.

Dr Atuguba explained further that they had to perform caesarean section because the victim’s “cervix is not favourbale for her to go through normal delivery”.

“In 20 minutes, we delivered a female baby; 2.2kg. The survival rate is very, very good with this weight so baby is fine,” the doctor said.

This is the horrifying moment a mother abandons her newborn baby in a plastic bag behind a supermarket after giving birth alone in a nearby bush.

The baby was found naked with signs of hypothermia by the supermarket manager in the village of Cheremshan in Russia.

The unnamed 36-year-old woman, who already has two school-age children, started her contractions while walking on the street.

The mother delivered the baby in a bush alone and cut the umbilical cord herself.

The infant was then placed in a plastic bag and dumped behind the supermarket where the mother works as a cashier.

The FBI has released a photo of a disturbing teddy bear bomb a man left on a road where children could find it. Wesley Dallas Ayers, 27, is currently serving 30 years in prison for planting three real bombs and three fakes ones across South Carolina. One of the bombs went off and injured a man in the leg when he went to investigate. The bombs were all left in Anderson County during January and February last year. Around the same time, he planted three hoax bombs along with threatening messages that more powerful devices were to come. The viable bombs were ‘dangerous and lethal’, a judge found, ‘weaponised with shrapnel, concealed in household items, and publicly placed in or near roadways,’ the Department of Justice said.Judge Henry Herlong said it was only by the efforts of police and sheer good fortune that more people were not seriously harmed or killed. The man injured was driving with his daughter when he spotted glowing wicker basket in the middle of the road. The man stopped to examine the package and it exploded, causing minor burns to his leg. Police investigating found a piece of paper with Arabic writing referencing Osama bin Laden.

Three men who took delight in murdering a fellow inmate to show their dominance in prison are facing life behind bars. The trio used a pair of shanks made from a pencil and razor blades and a makeshift ligature to try and decapitate Ukrainian national Taras Nykolyn at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes on June 5 last year. The Old Bailey heard the murder was carried out because Nykolyn was unable to speak much English and they wanted to display their power over the prison, including the guards.It was so violent jurors were given mental health assessments before the trial. Stephen Boorman, 34, sneaked up on Nykolyn in the prison yard and knocked him to the ground where Jibreel Raheem, 36, started kicking him in the head and slashing him with one of the shanks. Boorman then used the second shank on Nykolyn’s head and neck. Prosecutor Amjad Malik QC said ‘[Boorman] was trying his best to slice away at the neck of Mr Nykolyn’.
James Brabbs, 33, then took a piece of cloth that had been fashioned into a ligature to try and decapitate Nykolyn. Mr Malik said: ‘It was used as a piece of material that could lever into the cut – into the neck – and to be used almost as a piece of cutting material going through the neck once it had been cut.’ Brabbs then stood on Nykolyn’s back then repeatedly tugged on the ligature in a bid to remove his head. Prison officers tried to intervene but one of the guards was told: ‘Don’t come any f**king closer or you’re going to get shanked as well. Don’t come any closer to this gate or I’ll slit your throat as well.’ Mr Malik said: ‘He wasn’t irate, he was talking normally. It just appeared like normal conversation. He wanted to stop any attempt by those officers to open that locked gate and intervene.’ Boorman, who strutted around the yard like he was putting on a show, shouted over the melee ‘he’s dying on this yard today, it’s as simple as that’.

A man who told his wife he had a 'present for her' before brutally stabbing her has been convicted of attempted murder.

Shaun May placed a tea towel over his wife Laura's eyes before asking her to guess what the 'present' might be.

As she lay there, he began counting down from 10, while walking about and muttering, 'come on Shaun', a court heard.

He then launched the sickening attack in which he stabbed her so hard between her shoulder and neck the handle of the knife broke, the Mirror reports.May, 34, appeared at Maidstone Crown Court last week where he admitted to the attack but denied attempted murder.

His wife said the couple 'really loved each other' and had been together for six years before the attack.

On the day of the attack, May had got up at around 5am after saying he had 'heard a sound'. He came back to bed and the couple had sex, after which May told his wife: "I've got a present for you. Would you like it?"

Mrs May told the court: "I said yes and he told me to close my eyes, which I did.

"He told me to lay on my back, which I did and he placed something over my eyes. I thought it was a tea towel."

He then paced the room while counting down, but Mrs May said he never got to zero and she began to get impatient.

She told the court: "I said to him, 'This had better be a puppy', because we had talked about having one, but he said, 'It's not a puppy'.

The salty marine air was coming off the bay as we crossed the grounds of San Quentin State Prison just before midnight and entered the building that houses the death chamber.

It was December 2005, and I was about to witness an execution. Stanley “Tookie” Williams, one of the early leaders of L.A.’s Crips gang, was to be put to death by lethal injection.

I was one of three dozen people who assembled in a small amphitheater. Some knew Williams; others knew the four people Williams had shotgunned to death. I was there because members of the media are invited to bear witness.

Curtains separated us from the chamber, as if we were awaiting a show. And then they were pulled open to reveal the man who was about to die.

The attendants had trouble pricking a vein for the lethal injection. They kept trying and Williams grew exasperated. Finally, success. He turned to look at each of us, through the window, before closing his eyes.

I left the prison thinking I was fine, but for weeks after, I’d find myself restless and disturbed by what I had seen. I had no soft spot for Williams. But the sight of a man being executed by the state in a choreographed ceremony, because we deem murder a heinous crime, still haunts me.

A mother has shared of her worst nightmare after her toddler son fell straight onto a pencil which lodged inside his mouth.

Mum Bri Skrypinski said she heard an 'almighty scream' from her son Thomas during a family gathering in at her house on the northern Gold Coast in Australia.She rushed to his aid and found a pencil skewering his face through the top palate.

In a frantic emergency call that was released on Tuesday, desperate Bri can be heard detailing the injuries to paramedics.

She said: "He has fallen, he had a pencil in his mouth, it has gone right up into his palate,

"We cannot get [the pencil] out, it is jammed.

"He is bleeding everywhere. What can we do, we can't stop the bleeding."

Four-month-old Thomas can be heard wailing in the background as Bri told him 'it's okay'.

She carried on describing Thomas' condition and said: "He's completely alert but there's blood coming out of his nose.

"He's starting to go purple in the face."

A Wisconsin mother was shot dead as she taught her teenage son to drive in a road-rage incident on Friday.

Tracey Smith, 46, a sergeant who worked for the Wisconsin Department of Corrections was teaching her 17-year-old son behind the wheel in Milwaukee when the pair were involved in a minor collision with another vehicle.

It set off a chain of tragic events that ended with the mother being shot right in front of her son.Milwaukee Police wrote in a tweet, 'This stemmed from a minor accident that occurred. The passenger of the vehicle that was hit got out and confronted the [driver] of the striking vehicle,' police said in a statement Monday.

'Words were exchanged and the driver of the striking vehicle pulled out a firearm and shot the passenger.

'The suspect fled the scene and witnesses drove the victim to a local hospital. Life-saving measures were done upon her arrival, however, she passed away.'

In actual fact, the 17-year-old son whom Smith was teaching ended up driving his own mother to hospital where she later died from her injuries.

A newlywed couple were killed when their car collided with a truck just minutes after taking their vows in Texas.

Harley Joe Morgan, 19, and Rhiannon Boudreaux Morgan, 20, who knew each other since the eight grade, were pulling out of the driveway of a courtroom in Orange County where they tied the knot when the accident occurred.

Police said Harley Morgan was driving a 2004 Chevrolet when he collided with a 2015 Ford F-250 pickup truck towing a trailer carrying a tractor and traveling south on Highway 87 on Friday at 3pm, according to KDFM.

The young couple, who were both from the city of Vidor, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at the 2300 block of Highway 87. The groom's mother Lashawna Morgan and sister Christina Fontenot were driving behind the couple and witnessed the horror crash.

While still wearing the blood-stained clothing from when she tried to remove the high school sweethearts from the wreckage, Lashawna said her 'worst nightmare' happened before her eyes.

The devastated mom told KDFM: 'They had just gotten married. They haven't even been married for five minutes.

'Those two babies. The only thing that they wanted was to get married and start their life. The two of them had so many dreams.'

A 16-year-old alleged hitman had his head blown off in a gruesome shoot-out when he was dispatched with fellow gangsters to kill police in Mexico.

Juanito Pistola, also known as Commander Little, was inside a van with members of Hell's Troop on Tuesday when they were ordered to ambush police in the town of Nuevo Laredo, a smuggling gateway.

At around noon, Pistola and six others, armed with rifles and dressed in military fatigues, travelled in the van with Texas license plates and engaged the police in a gun battle close to the airport.High calibre rounds tore through their bodies and pictures of the aftermath showed Pistola's head taken clean off and the blood-soaked corpses of his comrades.

Another four members of Hell's Troop, a wing of the notorious Northeast Cartel (CDN), were killed in clashes with police in the town, Vanguardia reported.

Local media said that the vehicle Pistola died in had been used in an attack on the police several days before in a different part of the city.

Social media videos and narco-rap songs refer to Pistola as being a hitman in the ranks of the CDN since he was just 13.

According to Mexico's official news agency, Notimex, Pistola had been arrested by police in 2015.

According to reports, cartels often recruit minors to mainly work as drug smugglers.

Nuevo Laredo is of great strategic importance for the cartels because of numerous international bridges and its proximity to the US.

The brother of a Harry Potter actress and his friend were found dead next to railway tracks after a drunken night out, an inquest has heard. A traumatised mum who was heavily criticised by friends for placing her toddler son in a rear-facing car seat has told how it saved his life during a head-on car crash.

Mum-of-one Tathra Di Liberto was faced with every parent's worst nightmare last week when she received a chilling call that her toddler son Axton, 23 months, had been involved in a severe car crash.

The 35-year-old from Lowood, Queensland, had taken her son to stay with her mother Bronwyn the day before so Axton could spend time with his grandparents, who live an hour away, over the weekend.But the next afternoon, Tathra and her husband Anton, 34, discovered their son, along with Tathra's mum and brother Bailey, 21, had been involved in a severe head-on collision with an 'out of control' car.

'My parents love to have Axton stay with them over the weekend every so often, so they can spend some time together with their grandson,' she said.

'I'd dropped him off at their house on the Friday afternoon. Mum and I were actually discussing the rear-facing seat, as they were going to put it in their car.'Mum suggested to just turn him to the front, but I said not to, and helped her adjust it. And thank god we did. I got a phone call from my brother after 5pm the next day who told me that they'd all been in a car accident. I felt sick to my stomach.

'They'd not even got two miles from the house when it happened. They were just going to grab some dinner together. He said everyone was okay, but that him and mum were hurt. But luckily, Axton didn't have a scratch on him.'

Tathra's mum and brother were both injured, with Bailey suffering severe whiplash and seatbelt bruising, while Bronwyn had a tendon completely torn off the bone in her knee.

A man has miraculously woken from a coma after his wife spent five years by his bedside talking to him and playing his favourite songs. Li Zhihua, from Xiangyang in Hubei Province, China, fell into a coma after suffering a serious brain injury during an accident while on his way to work. He was knocked down by a motorbike in August 2013 while riding his scooter and doctors had told his wife, Zhang Guihuan, 57, that he would be in a ‘persistent vegetative state’, according to Chinese news outlets Btime.com, Cover News and Pear. However, his wife refused to give up and spent more than 20 hours a day for nearly 2,000 days nursing him and ended up losing 10 kilograms in weight as a result.
Mr Li woke up from the coma last year and says that although he couldn’t speak, he was fully aware of his surroundings and what his wife had done for him. Ms Guihuan had become his sole carer and would only sleep two to three hours a day so that she could feed and talk to him.
She would put food into his mouth, before gently pressing his tongue, as a signal that he could eat. A 13-year-old boy from Ireland smashed through an iron gate and plunged his family's rental car into the wall of a school while on holiday in Marbella.

Locals in the Spanish resort said it was lucky that nobody was killed as he crashed the powerful Audi A4 through two sets of iron gates and across a busy road.The car, which cost upwards of £28,335, is believed to have been written off following the accident on Wednesday evening.

It's understood the family were on holiday when the father left the teenager alone in the car.

Reports surfaced that the family were making their way to Malaga airport to fly home when they drove out from the Padel and Tennis Club in Nueva Alcantara, but video footage shows the teen in swimwear, suggesting they may have been going to the beach.The teen claims to have climbed into the driver's seat and accidentally knocked the motor of the automatic car into gear, according to the Irish Sun.

In a panic, he reportedly hit the accelerator instead of the brake and burst through the gates.

Both the boy and the father were left unharmed, but left a severe trail of destruction in their midst.

After the crash, the father could be seen comforting the boy, and walking around with his head in his hands.

Ty Logan, from Harrow, north west London, shared the video with his 46,000 followers showing knives he claims to have picked up on the street.Wearing a navy zip-up hoody, he starts off speaking directly to camera stating: 'Cuz, I see what my man's doing cleaning up the streets of London, so I thought I'd do my bit'.

Owami and Olwethu Mzazi believe they are “two bodies with one soul”. They say from birth they have been sharing everything – and they now share a husband.

The two say they have a bond that is “too deep” to explain, and didn’t have a hard time marrying the same man. They married TV director Mzukiseni Mzazi in 2011 in a traditional ceremony.

The twins say they were raised by their grandmother and were very poor. They say they were so poor that they even had to ask for money from people and couldn’t even afford sanitary towels.After matric, they wanted to pursue a career in acting. In pursuit of their dream, they met their husband Mzukiseni, who was then working as a director on television drama ‘Muvhango’.

Instead of giving them a break based on their skill and talent, Owami claims Mzukiseni made moves on them.

“Because he was our mentor before [becoming] our husband, we said to him ‘we are young, passionate young girls who want to be actresses, but we need someone who can mentor us to be on TV’. He said ‘okay’, and later on we got an SMS saying ‘I can’t help you if you can’t be my wives’,” Owami says.

“We sat down and said maybe this is God. We said let’s take a chance. We said ‘we don’t love you, we don’t see you as a lover, but we will take a chance and we will learn how to love you’,” says Olwethu.

When Amanda Scarpinati, of Athens, New York, suffered severe burns as a baby, she was being cared for by a kind, young nurse while staying in a hospital in Albany, N.Y. After 38 years, Amanda finally found that nurse and thanked her for her kindness in person.In 1977, after falling off a couch onto a hot steam humidifier, the then-3-month-old Scarpinati was taken to Albany Medical Center to be treated for third-degree burns on her head and hand. During her stay at the hospital, a compassionate nurse with long wavy hair tended to young Scarpinati, holding and comforting her.

A few of those moments were captured by photographer Carl Howard, and they were eventually published in the Medical Center’s 1977 annual report. A picture of the nurse cradling the young Scarpinati, whose head was wrapped in gauze, was even featured on the front cover of the annual report.

Scarpinati kept these heartwarming black-and-white photographs, and it was the photos that would lead her to seek out her former caregiver many years later.“It gives me chills every time I look at it,” Scarpinati told CBC/Radio-Canada’s show As it Happens.

Having to deal with scars and undergoing reconstructive surgeries for years, Scarpinati, now an adult, shared that those black-and-white photos had consoled her during this rather gloomy period in her childhood.

“As a child, things were very difficult for me. The children weren’t always the nicest … I would be called a witch because of my scars from the burns,” she shared. “I would look at that picture and I would always think, ‘Here is someone who cared for me with love and compassion.’ It didn’t matter what kind of scars or burns I had. It was just genuine. It was comforting.”
