Jubilation as Latest Ethiopian Airplane, Boeing 787 Lands in Enugu:

Business activities were temporarily halted at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu on Saturday as the latest passenger plane Boeing 787, 900 series belonging to Ethiopian Airlines landed at the airport.

Travellers at the airport had expressed delight at the berthing of the aircraft, said to be less than two months old.

The 350-passenger capacity aircraft flown by Captain Mulatu Abebe from Addis Ababa landed at the Enugu airport at about 11.30 am amid cheers from residents who gathered to welcome the flight. It is the first time the two months old plane was landing on Nigerian soil.

Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, who was full of smiles while receiving crew members and passengers that boarded the aircraft, said his administration would continue to partner the airline to make their stay conducive in the state.

He stated that the target of the government was to ensure that more international flights come into the state, stressing that since the start of the operation of the airline in Enugu, more passengers are trooping to travel through the state.

“I want to place it on record that we are not resting to ensure that bigger aircrafts operate the international route of this airport. It will increase the flow of passengers because Enugu is safe and secured. Today is a wonderful day, the first time such a plane is landing in Enugu state and capital of the south-east. Enugu state government is happy that in this administration such a thing is happening.

“This is not the target, this is a small plane compared to what we are expecting to be landing in this airport. We expect bigger plans and more aircrafts to be landing. I know Ethiopian will say it is a competition, but no matter the number of plane landing here, we still have enough passengers because a lot of people want to travel from Enugu. It is more convenience for us instead of going through Abuja or Lagos”, Ugwuanyi, who was represented at the occasion by his Special Adviser, Special Duties, Uwakwe Azikwe said.

On his own, Anglican Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Rev Emmanuel Chukwuma, said the inaugural flight was a welcome development, stressing that the airline has reduced the sufferings of southeast travelers since their operation in the state.

He however appealed to the federal government to speed up action for the completion of the international wing of the airport as well as rehabilitation of the local wing.

Chukwuma also urged southeast and south-south businessmen to use the opportunity provided by the latest aircraft to boost their businesses and warned against acts that could compromise security and integrity of the airport.

He prayed God to continue to grant safe trip on travelers of Enugu route. Ethiopian Airline’s Traffic and Sales Manager, Ato Biniam Addisu said the airline operates in more than 100 destinations all over the world, adding that it presently has several aircrafts and considers Nigeria as its second largest market.

HUNDREDS of indigenes of Benue State residing in five states of the Southeast geopolitical zone on Saturday staged a peaceful protest in Enugu the Enugu State capital over the incessant killings of their people living in their home state by suspected Fulani herdsmen. The states are Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo.

The protesters who had initially planned to begin the peaceful demonstration at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu before they were stopped by the Police, shifted to Nike Lake Hotel at the outskirts of Enugu metropolis apparently to avoid clashes with security operatives.

The Spokesmen of the protesters, Chief Abel Abah the Ochidoma of Enugu State, Reverend Ternenbe Tor of Universal Reformed Christian Church and Dr David Wayas of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in their separate speeches, told reporters that they were under the auspices of “Concerned Benue Indigenes Resident in Eastern Nigeria”, and appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to do the needful by stopping the incessant killings.

They vowed to defend themselves if the authorities refuse to check the spate of killings in their home state, wondering why the President Buhari led Federal government classified the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as a Terrorist group while the Fulani herdsmen who have been killing innocent people are left to roam about the streets scot-free.

The group also expressed their support to the anti-grazing law enacted by their home State Governor, Ortom, and called for its implementation. They also insisted that the anti-grazing law is meant to protect their people from the menace of Fulani herdsmen.

They also called on the Governors of the South East of the country and other political leaders in the country to come to the rescue of Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau States, predicting that the South East zone is likely to be the next target.

Some of the placards carried by the demonstrators read: “Enough is Enough of the Benue Killings by Terrorists Herdsmen”, “Cattle cannot be given more attention than human lives”, “Your cows are not more valuable than. Human lives”.

An attack on Southern and Middle Belt leaders, on Friday, by the chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum (NGF), Governor Kashim Shettima of Borno State, elicited a prompt rebuke from the leaders.

Shettima, who led a delegation of some northern governors to Benue State over recent killings by Fulani herdsmen in the state, described Southern and Middle Belt leaders as “political dinosaurs” with nothing more to contribute to national development.

The leaders, in their response, described the statement as rude and uncouth, saying “no well raised” person would address elderly persons as the northern governors did.

Leaders of the pan-Yoruba political organisation, Afenifere, Ohanaeze and Middle Belt Forum, had, on Wednesday visited the Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, to commiserate with him over the recent killings and mass burial of 73 people in the state. They called for a restructuring of the country.

But on Friday, leading Governors Simon Lalong (Plateau), Malam el-Rufai (Kaduna), Yahaya Bello (Kogi) and Mohammad Abubakar (Jigawa), Shettima described the southern leaders as old men who were living in the past with “nothing to give Nigeria again.”

The deputy governor of Osun State, Chief (Mrs) Titilayo Tomori, also joined the team to represent her governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola.

The governor, who used the visit to lash at leaders of the Joint South and Middle Belt Forum, expressed disgust that people were trying to make politics out of the crisis, stating that “none of those people could say they know problems of this state than the governor.”

Shettima, who refused to condemn the activities of the herdsmen throughout his speech and during interaction with newsmen, said problems were created by men and only men could find solution to the problems.
