PoliticsPDP, CUPP Condemn Failed Assassination Attempt On Ekweremadu by storm001(op): 12:42am On Nov 07, 2018
By Dirisu Yakubu

ABUJA – The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, Tuesday condemned in strong terms, the alleged attempt on the life of the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who was Tuesday morning attacked alongside members of his family by assailants, at his official residence in Apo, Abuja.

The PDP in a statement by its spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan expressed fear over the safety of the lawmaker, adding that certain forces are bent on silencing him.
It noted that the attacks on the Senator have assumed a frightening dimension since he became Deputy Senate President, even as it called on the authorities to do a holistic probe of Tuesday’s latest invasion of the lawmaker’s residence to unravel the identity of those behind the alleged assassination plot.

“The PDP draws the attention of Nigerians to the series of uninvestigated security threats around the person of Senator Ekweremadu.

“Nigerians could recall that on November 17, 2015, a similar attempt was made on
Senator Ekweremadu’s life by some assailants on his way to work. Though that attack was reported to the authorities, there have been no
investigations by the security agencies. No arrests have been made and no culprit has been brought to book.

“Instead, the Senator has been a subject of unrelenting harassments and attacks on his person and office since his emergence as Deputy Senate President, including the May 26, 2017 invasion of his official quarters
by security agencies, purportedly in search of phantom caches of arms, and the July 24, 2018 siege of his official residence at Apo Quarters.

“These were in addition to the invasion of the Senate chamber and carting away of the mace on the day Ekweremadu presided, in an otherwise very secure Three Arms Zone.

“The PDP family is, therefore, worried about the relentless attack on the Deputy Senate President, which we believe is part of a scheme to silence him,” the statement read in part.

The party called for an immediate wide-range probe into the attack “as well as an assurance from the federal government on the safety of the Deputy Senate President, as the nation is not ready to accept any harm on his person or his family at this critical time.”

On its part, CUPP described as “shocking” news of the botched assassination attempt, saying opposition figures were no longer save in their own country.

In a statement by its first spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, the coalition called for the interrogation of the arrested alleged assassin to ascertain the real sponsors of the failed move to harm the key opposition leader.

“The President should immediately sack the Inspector General of Police, IGP, and appoint a gallant and committed officer of the police that will help check the growing internal insecurity in the country,” the statement read.

A yet to be identified gunman is being held by the police in Abuja after he was apprehended during an invasion of the Abuja residence of the deputy president of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

The man who has reportedly not divulged his mission, was part of a group of men who surreptitiously entered Ekweremadu’s house early on Tuesday morning, Mr. Uche Anichukwu, special adviser on media to the Deputy President of the Senate disclosed in a statement.

“The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, his wife, and son escaped an assassination attempt at about 4am on Tuesday. One of the

“The armed men discreetly evaded the security at Ekweremadu’s Apo Quarters residence, to gain entry into his house.

“The attackers, who could not immediately shoot in order not to attract the attention of the security personnel on duty, took hold of his son, and commanded him to lead them the Senator’s bedroom.

“It was at the Senator’s bedroom that a struggle ensued, leading to the arrest of one of the assailants with dangerous weapons and housebreaking devices, while the rest managed to escape.

“The arrested member of the gang has, however, refused to divulge any information on the operation and has been handed over to the police.

“Ekweremadu, his wife, and one of his sons were in the house at the time of the attack.

“It could be recalled that the lawmaker narrowly escaped an attempt on his life in Abuja on November 17, 2015.

“Although the 2015 incident was reported to the security agencies, nothing has been heard about the matter till date.”

The World Cup often marks a watershed in players' careers, and a few of the game's biggest names may choose to stand down now Russia 2018 is over

#1 Sergio Aguero | Argentina

The Manchester City star will be 34 when the next World Cup arrives, and has suffered mixed fortunes in international football compared to his brilliant club record.
Getty

#2 Lionel Messi | Argentina

Messi's fourth World Cup campaign ended once more in disappointment, as his Argentina team were muscled out at the last-16 stage by France in a thrilling 4-3 defeat. The Barca star will be 35 when Qatar comes around and with such upheaval in the Argentina set-up, it is by no means certain that he will commit himself to four more years of gruelling transatlantic travel to represent his nation.

#3 Marcelo | Brazil

Marcelo saw his long-time Brazil team-mate Dani Alves ruled out of contention prior to Russia 2018 with an injury that means the great right-back's World Cup career came to an end. While the Madrid star is slightly younger than Alves, he will still be 34 in 2022.

#4 Luka Modric | Croatia

Modric was a rock for Croatia all the way through their amazing World Cup adventure. But the playmaker is another for whom Qatar 2022 will see a long way away right now. The Real Madrid man will be 37 by the time the ball gets rolling in four years' time.

#5 Mohamed Salah | Egypt

At just 26, Liverpool's fantastic forward should have no problem in making the cut for Qatar. But Egypt's exit from the World Cup was accompanied by strong speculation over Salah's international future, which could yet push him into a premature retirement.

#6 Cristiano Ronaldo | Portugal

Ronaldo made an explosive start to the 2018 World Cup with a hat-trick against Spain, making the Real Madrid star an early Golden Boot contender. But the forward failed to keep up that early momentum and drew a blank as Portugal went out to Uruguay in the last 16 and now, while there has been no official announcement, he may decide to bow out of the international arena.

#7 Thomas Muller | Germany

Having starred so impressively at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, Muller failed to leave his mark on Russia as Germany crashed and burned in the group stage. With a rebuilding process expected now from coach Joachim Low, his future as a part of the national team building towards Qatar is by no means guaranteed.

#8 Sergio Ramos | Spain

The Roja captain will be 36 in 2022, making him a long shot to last until the next World Cup. His unmatched commitment and drive, however, means that if anyone can go on to an incredible fifth finals, it is the Madrid stalwart.

#9 Luis Suarez | Uruguay

Like his strike partner Cavani, time is against Suarez if he wishes to make his fourth World Cup finals. The Barcelona star will be nearing his 36th birthday in Qatar, and will first hope to regain his best form for club and country after a comparatively disappointing 2017-18 campaign.

#10 Edinson Cavani | Uruguay

The Paris Saint-Germain striker came up big for the Celeste after a quiet start to the World Cup, smashing two past Portugal to prove his goal-scoring prowess. But he limped off in that clash and missed out on defeat to France. At 31, Cavani may step aside as Uruguay search for future striking stars for Qatar.
