Assalamu alaykum,
I think the best way to find a good wife witout breaking Islamic laws is for one to go old school.

Ask your mother/sister to find a suitable girl for you (she must know plenty),
If her appearance fits your taste,
Get her father's permission to visit her and get to know her (in front of her adult mahram).

@mazaje

Assuming you are a muslim,
i want you to remember that belief in Jesus as a messenger of Allah(SWT) and his message is compulsory.
Therefore, i urge you to stop attributing these so-called lies to Jesus.
Attribute them to the authors of the bible instead.

And say: "Truth has (now) arrived, and Falsehood perished: for Falsehood is (by its nature) bound to perish."

Assalamu alaykum,

For a detailed explanation of the prophet's(SAW) prayer, please read this:

http://www.qss.org/articles/salah/toc.html

It is one of the best explanations using authentic hadiths.

However, i was told by my islamic tutor to overlook the author's position on saying
Assalamu alan nabiyyi
[Peace be on the Prophet].
in the tashahud after the death of the prophet (SAW).

My tutor told me to maintain what the prohet (SAW) taught since he(SAW) never asked the companions to change it after his death.

Errors in prayer that must be avoided are explained here http://www.qss.org/articles/errors/toc.html

I don't think you guys love the prophet (SAW) more than Abu Bakr(RA). Did he celebrate mawlid Al-nabi?
Every Muslim must consider the following saying of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam very seriously, Jaabir reported that the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam used to deliver his sermon with this opening:

"The best word is the Book of Allâh and the best way is that of Muhammad. The worst deed is innovation and each innovation is a deviation from Islaam." [Sahih Muslim: (vol. 2, p. 410, no. 1885).]

Brothers and sisters,
We should try and change this generation to suit Islam instead of changing Islam to suit this generation.

How can Queenisha be judged when she'll be on the right hand of God asking Him to have mercy on your soul because you refused to accept Christ when you were in the world?

Praise be to Allaah.

The fatwa of the shaykh (may Allaah have mercy on him) says that the traveler is allowed the dispensation of shortening and combining his prayers, and of not fasting so long as he is still considered to be a traveler because of the general meaning of the texts. This was also the view of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah before him. But the majority of scholars say that the traveler may only avail himself of the dispensations attached to travel so long as he does not intend to stay for four days or more. This is more on the safe side, and this was the fatwa of Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him).

Whenever there is a difference of opinion between our ulamahs i always try to be on the safe side. However, if your intention is to go back after you finish, you may be considered a traveller, but try to be on the safe side.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Can Women Be Leaders In Islam? by subzeeero(m): 12:22am On Aug 17, 2008
Men and women are equal in islam but with different roles to play in the society. The roles assigned to each sex automatically fits it because it was prescribed by their Creator.

“Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allaah has made one of them to excel the other…” [al-Nisa’ 4:34].

It is also clearly indicated by the hadeeth of Abu Bakrah who said that when the Prophet SAW?S (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) heard that the Persians had appointed the daughter of Chosroes as their queen, he said, “No people who appoint a woman as their leader will ever prosper.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 13/53).

This is a very sensitive issue as the world is now filled with the belief that women should do everything while the role of women in the society has been clearly explained in the qur'an and sunnah of the prophet (SAW). This is nothing but the plot of the unbelievers and they have succeded to some degree considering the behaviour of some of our women.

There is no dispute among the scholars that one of the conditions of the imaam or leader is that he should be male, therefore i urge my brothers and sisters to stop debating on this issue due to its clear and sensitive nature.

Islam for Muslims / Re: What Is The Position Of Islam On Slavery? by subzeeero(m): 4:39pm On Jul 13, 2008
It is permissible for there to be a physical relationship between a man and his female slave just as there is between a man and his wife, unless he marries her off  to someone else, in which case it is not permissible for him to have intercourse with her because it is not permissible for a woman to be in an intimate relationship with two men at the same time.

A female slave owner does not have to be married in order to gain possession of his female slave.
NB: it is not permissible for a man to have intercourse with a female slave until she has had a period from which it may be ascertained that she is not pregnant. If she is pregnant then he must wait until she gives birth. Their honour was not considered to be permissible to anyone by way of prostitution, which was the fate of female prisoners of war in most cases. Rather Islam made them the property of their masters alone, and forbade anyone else to also have intercourse with them, even if that was his son.

I think that the slave must strive to satisfy his master, therefore i don't think a slave's consent is an issue, but i don't know anything about whether a master needs consent to have sex with his slave or not. All i know is that Islam  teaches us to be fair towards them, treat them kindly and not to over-burden them.

Religion / Re: Whats Your View About Pork (meat From Pig) As A Christian by subzeeero(m): 7:31am On Jul 13, 2008
" The pig also because it is a splitter of the
hoof but there is no cud. It is unclean for
you. None of their flesh must you eat and carcass
           you must not touch. "
                                Deuteronomy 14:8 ( Bible)

BIBLICAL ASPECT OF THE PROHIBITION

Old Testament

The Jews and the different christian sects and denominations
believe  in the Old Testament. Adherents   of   other   religions
alleged that the  prohibition  was already superseded by the New
Testament. This  cogent argumentation is inconclusive. No one  can
specifically  point  out  that Jesus  Christ  (PBUH)  lifted  the
prohibition. On the contrary, he upheld it  he declared:

" Think not that I have come to abolish the law
and  the prophets: I have come not to abolish
them but to fulfill them."  (Matthew 5:17 RSV)

Jesus Christ (PBUH) was obviously referring to the  existing
Law of his time , the Mosaic Law !- in which the Law  prohibiting
pig as article of food is mentioned. ( Leviticus 11:7-11)

" As for any beast that is a splitter of the hoof
but is not a former of the cleft and not a chewer
of the cud, they are unclean for you. Everyone
touching them will be unclean. "
                                    Leviticus 11:26

In addition, the book of Prophet Isaiah said:

" Who sit in tombs, and spend the night in secret
places  who  eats  swine's  flesh  and broth of
abominable things is in their vessels;,  These
are a smoke  in  my  nostrils,a fire that burns
all the day. "  ( Isaiah 65:4,5b  RSV)

The New Testament
Despite the Biblical injunction prohibiting pork as food,
still  people  of other religious persuations insist  on  finding
ways  and  reasons  to justify their  consumption  of  prohibited
animals  arguing  that  said  Biblical  prohibition  was  already
superseded  in  the New Testament when in  certainly, no  one  can
specifically point out that Jesus Christ (PBUH) indeed lifted the
prohibition. On the contrary, Jesus (PBUH) declared:

" Think not that I have come to abolish the law
and the prophets. I have come not to abolish but
            to fulfill them. " ( Matthew 5:17 )

The  fact is, we will find in Mark 5:1-20 that Jesus  (PBUH)
even  permitted the foul spirits (evil spirits) possessing a  man
to  enter  into  the herb of swine. Since the  flesh  of  pig  is
unlawful  for  the  Jews, to  eat  and  since  it  is   considered
unclean, (Leviticus 11:7-cool consequently, the Jews are not to  keep
or  raise  them. This Biblical account states that  Jesus  (PBUH)
punished  the  owners  of  the  swine;destroyed  their   unlawful
livelihood and at the same time showed that pig is the habitat of
unclean spirits.
The  only provision in the New Testament alluded to  their
argument   is  in  Act  10:10-16.  Without  reading   the   whole
context, one  would be inclined to interpret it to mean  that  God
abrogated  His  previous command found on  Deuteronomy  14:3-8. An
alleged  apparition  of Peter on Acts 10:11-16  is  alleged  to
supersede  Deuteronomy 14:3-8, however, nowhere in the Bible  is  it
mentioned  that  Peter actually slaughtered and ate  the  unclean
animals  he saw in his apparition. The correct interpretation  of
this apparition was shown to him in Acts 10:25-28. Acts  10:11-16
therefore, carries   an   allegorical    connotation,r eferring
explicitly  to the Gentile nations or non-Jewish  nations.  Peter
was  told  not to call the Gentiles common  and  unclean  because
God's  mercy, blessing and forgiveness also encompasses  the  Non
Jews and life eternal also awaits the penitent.
In  the  Bible, Jesus(PBUH) likened to a dog and  pig  those
people whom after receiving divine teaching failed to profit from
them and abuses them for self-serving purposes:

" Do not give holy to dogs- they will only turn and
attack you. Do not throw your pearls in front  of
pigs-they will only trample them underfoot. "
                             ( Matthew 7:6 NEB)

The New Heavens And The New Earth

The  book  of   Isaiah   66:1-24, is an  oracle  of  the  new
heavens  and  the  new earth  prepared  for the believers. Within
the context, God condemns  people's practices such as eating   the
flesh of  pigs, reptiles, and rats.

" Those who sanctify and purify themselves
to go into the gardens, following one in
the midst, eating  swine's flesh and the
abomination  and  mice, shall come to an
end together says the LORD. "
                                 (Isaiah 67:17 RSV)

Therefore, the  prohibition    on  the  eating  of   unclean
animals  was  not  abrogated  during t he New Testament times.God
will  still  punish the transgressors in the fire that will never
quench. This will occur during the new heavens and the new earth.

DISEASES CAUSED BY PORK

The  following lists show germs or parasites that are  found
in   pork  and      some  diseases caused by them. Many of these
diseases  are contagious while some are proven fatal. This proves
that the more  science  advances the more Islam is shown correct
as a religion of God.

PARASITIC DISEASES

   a)  TRICHINELLA  SPIRATIS  ( Trichina worms )
It is the most dangerous parasite to man ( Rheumatism and
muscular  pain). The infected persons shown no symptoms, recover
very slowly some die, some  reduced to permanent invalids. No one
is immune from this disease and there is no cure.

   b)  TAENIA SOLIUM  ( Pork tape worm )
The  worm  causes malnourishment of the person  leading
to  anemia, diarrhea, extreme  depression  melancholia    and
digestive disturbances.  Cysticercosis  means that larva enter
the  blood  stream then settle down in one or more of the vital
organs of the  body,  for  example: brain, liver, lungs or spinal
cord.  They  grow  and   encapsulate, inducing  pressure to the
system around, resulting  in  dangerous  diseases    (diarrhea,
digestive disorder, anemia, chronic invalidation).

   c)  ROUND WORMS
Examples: Ascaris, which   may  lead   to   digestive
                disturbances, appendicitis, obstructive jaundice.

   d)  HOOK WORMS
           Examples:Ancylostomiasis,  which   may    lead    to
anemia, oedema, heart   failure   or retarded
growth  ( mental  and  physical), tuberculosis,
                 diarrhea and typhoid.

   e)  SCHITOSOMA JAPONICUM
Bleeding, anemia  and  other  syndromes.  If ova
are  settled in  the  brain  or spinal  cord, paralysis
           and death may occur.

   f)  PARAGOMINES WESTERMAINI
Infestation  leading  to  bleeding   of   the    lungs
           ( endenve haemoptysis)

   g)  PACIOLEPSIS BUSKI
            Digestive   disturbances    leading   to   persistent
            diarrhea; generalized oedema.

   h)  CLONORCHIS SINENSIS
          chlonorchiasis-obstructive jaundice, liver enlargement.

   i)  METASTRONGYLUS APRI
Causes bronchitis, abscess of the lungs.

   j)  GIGANTHORINCHUS GIGAS
          Cause   anemia and digestive disorders.

   k)  BALATITIDIUM COLI
Causes acute dysentery and general weakness.

BACTERIAL DISEASES

      1. Tuberculosis
      2. Fusiformis necrofurus: causing foot-rot which  is  very
         difficult to heal.
      3. Salmonella Cholera suis: causing cholera
      4. Paratyphoid
      5. Bruceellosis: Acute, sub acute and chronic. It may  lead
         to permanent disabilities.
      6. Swine Erysipelas: causing Erypelas in man.

Viral Diseases
      1. Small pox: is was a source of infection to man.
      2. Japanese B-encepphalitis: It is the source of infection
      3. Influenza, foot mouth disease, gas tro-enteritis of  the
         new born babies.

Protozoal   Diseases  :  Toxo  plasma  goundii-  It is a very
dangerous diseases.A new born baby of an infected woman may die
within  few  days  or weeks after delivery. But if he  survives
he may develop blindness or deafness. In adult chronic exhaustive
fever with enlarged liver and spleen may occur. Pneumonia,    or
celebro- spinal meninggitis which may lead to death or  madness.
The patient may become blind and deaf too.

Fats  In  Pigs:
Pork contains more fats than  other  meats.
Therefore, people  who  are  fond  of  pork are more obese  than
others.  Cholesterol  is higher  in their blood thus making them
more  prone  to  asthereosclerosis  cardiovascular accidents and
sudden  death.

Other Diseases :
Flesh of the pork  is hard to digest and may
lead  to chronic  digestive disturbances. Pimples, boils, cysts are
common  in   pork   eaters. These are some of the  parasites  and
diseases  found   in  pork and/ or the skin of pigs and certainly
there  are  many  more.  There is still no means of killing these
parasites, in  the  tissues, neither has anyone found a method of
expelling  them,  even   produced  any specific treatment for the
diseases.
Islam for Muslims / Re: Moslems And Life After Death by subzeeero(m): 9:46pm On Jul 12, 2008
Mohamad i know is a prophet but how do you involve him in your prayers or do you just read about his exemplary lifestyle?, Do you make supplications to him during prayers?

Muslims supplicate only to Allah(SWT) but we send blessings to the prophet(pbuh) as explained in the prophet's words below:

‘When any one of you prays, let him begin by praising his Lord, then let him send blessings on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), then let him pray for whatever he wants after that.’
(Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3477, and Abu Dawood, 1481)

Anyone who supplicates to the prophet has committed a sin so big that he has gone out of islam. This is because the prophet(pbuh) is the best of Allah's creations but only Allah(SWT) has the power to grant requests.

" Nor call on any besides Allah, such can neither profit you, nor hurt you. If you do, then you will surely be one of the zalimun(i.e the polytheist)" (Qur'an 10:106)

, How many wives did he marry? Who are his descendants?,
The beloved prophet(pbuh) had 12 wives, a maximum of 9 at one time because 3 died.

(Hence) no blame whatever attaches to the Prophet for (having done) what God has ordained for him. (Indeed, such was) God’s way with those that have passed away afore-time- and remember that God’s will is always destiny absolute!) (Al-Ahzab 33: 38).
Therefore, do not question his lifestyle because he only did what Allah(SWT) commanded him to do.

Islam makes all people equal before Allah. The only criteria is fearing Allah as He says,
"Lo! The noblest of you in the sight of Allah is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware " (Al-Hujurat 49:13).
Therefore his descendants have no special treatment. I don't really know if they exist or not.

Whats wrong with pork
Pork prohibition is also found in the Bible:
" The pig also because it is a splitter of the hoof but there is no cud. It is unclean for you. None of their flesh must you eat and carcass you must not touch. "
Deuteronomy 14:8 ( Bible)

" Let him find out which is the best food ( to be had ) , Eat of the best foods We have provided for you . "
( Holy Qur'an 18:19;7:160 )

Abstention from eating pork is a measure to safeguard health.Of all the domestic animals, pig is the most
avaricious, eating anything including human excreta. It is thecradle of harmful germs and parasites. Its meat is carrier of diseases to man, thus making it unfit for human consumption.

CHARACTER OF PIG
All types of animals are lawful to be eaten whether those living on land or in the water except those animals specifically forbidden in the Holy Writings revealed by the Almighty Creator and the sayings of the Prophet with clear and well defined injunctions.
Pig belong to the forbidden animals, and not allowed to be eaten by the believers. Pig eats almost anything dirty and they are very lazy animals. It is the most avaricious of all domestic
animals. Amongst all animals, pig is the cradle of harmful germs. It's meat serves as carrier of diseases to mankind. It is this very reason that made it unfit for human consumption consumption.

what do you do as a moslem if you mistakenly eat one? vomit it and ask your Allah for forgiveness?

I think one doesn't need to vomit. He should seek forgiveness but no one will be punished for what he did by mistake because Allah(SWT) is fair to everyone.

So you are not allowed to fart during prayers? What if you mistakenly fart during prayers? do you stop the prayer and clean and start all over again?

You need to be in a state of ablution during prayers, farting nullifies the ablution, therefore you need to perform ablution again.

Look at it this way.
Your creator Has made you from nothing, and given you sustenance. You need to do something to thank Him, or pay tribute to Him. The least you could do is to obey Him and follow the path which He has designed for you.

We are required to be in an enhanced state of purity while praying (salat - not the same as normal supplication). Therefore all you have to do is obey.

However, Allah(SWT) listens to all those that supplicate regardless of their state of purity as long as a person is a muslim.

Do you have a time limit because we discharge from our privates everyday. Again, what is the significance of washing the privates afterall God created the privates originally for discharge?

No, there is no time limit. The body waste discharge is considered as filth, therefore one has to clean himself after every discharge. Islam encourages cleanliness and maintenance of good hygiene.

However, most people like to go to the toilet before praying because absolute concentration is required in prayer, and any little discomfort or pressure to discharge something may affect your concentration.

All Praise be to Allaah.
The following verse from the Holy Qur'aan applies to such a recalcitrant and unobservant person (interpretation of the meaning):

"Then there has succeeded them a posterity who have neglected and lost the prayers, and followed their lusts; thus, they will face devastation (on the Day of Judgment, i.e., he will face Hell)." Surat Maryam 19:59.

By completely ceasing to perform prayers, a person is judged to be a kaafir, based on several ahaadeeth of the Prophet (peace be upon him), one of which is:

"The obligation and pact between us and them (the munaafiqeen, the hypocrites) is the prayer, so whoever abandons it has indeed committed kufr (i.e., become a kaafir, a non-believer)." (Tirmidhi, hadeeth #2621, and it is sahih) The meaning here is that the hypocrites are guaranteed their security and immunity from being fought by the Muslims as long as they perform their prayers; if they abandon their prayers, then they are among the kuffaar, and are subject to being fought and killed in the war against them. The Prophet further says, "What is between a person and committing shirk (associating partners with Allaah) and kufr (disbelief) is abandoning the prayer." (Sahih Muslim, #82)

one who does not pray, is to be shunned--no one should eat the meat he slaughters; he is not to marry a Muslimah; he is not to inherit a Muslim relative; he is not allowed to enter Mecca; upon dying he is not entitled to Muslim burial rites such as the washing of the body or the shrouding or the funeral prayer; and his inheritance is to go to the the community fund and not to his inheritors. @luv2talk
The poster asked for the position of islam on slavery not the attack on islam using slavery.

How did non-Muslims treat slaves?

Attitude of the Jews towards slaves:

According to the Jews, mankind is divided into two groups: the Israelites form one group and all of mankind is another group.

As for the Israelites, it is permissible to enslave some of them, according to specific teachings contained in the Old Testament.

As for people other than the Israelites, they are a low-class race according to the Jews, who may be enslaved via domination and subjugation, because they are people who are doomed to humiliation by the heavenly decree from eternity. It says in Exodus 21:2-6:

“If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything.

3 If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him.

4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.

5 But if the servant declares, 'I love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,'

6 then his master must take him before the judges. He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life”

As for enslaving non-Hebrews, this is done by taking them captive or overpowering them, because they believe that their race is superior to others, and they try to find a justification for that slavery in their distorted Torah. So they say that Ham the son of Noah – who was the father of Canaan – angered his father, because Noah was drunk one day and became naked as he was sleeping in his tent, and Ham saw him like that. When Noah found out about that after he woke up, he got angry and he cursed his progeny who were descendents of Canaan, and he said – according to the Book of Genesis 9:25-26): “Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers.’ He also said, ‘Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem.’”

In the same chapter (v. 27) it says: “May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his [or their] slave”.

In the Book of Deuteronomy 20:10-14, it says:

“When you march up to attack a city, make its people an offer of peace.

11 If they accept and open their gates, all the people in it shall be subject to forced labor and shall work for you.

12 If they refuse to make peace and they engage you in battle, lay siege to that city.

13 When the LORD your God delivers it into your hand, put to the sword all the men in it.

14 As for the women, the children, the livestock and everything else in the city, you may take these as plunder for yourselves”

Attitude of the Christians towards slaves:

Christianity confirmed slavery as it had been affirmed beforehand by Judaism. There is no text in the Gospels that prohibits or denounces slavery. It is remarkable that the historian William Muir criticized our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) for not immediately abolishing slavery, whilst overlooking the attitude of the Gospels concerning slavery, as there is no report from the Messiah, or from the Disciples, or from the churches concerning this issue.

Rather, in his Epistles, Paul advised that slaves should be loyal to their masters, as he says in his Epistle to the Ephesians, where he enjoins slaves to obey their masters as they would obey the Messiah:

“5 Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ.

6 Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart.

7 Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men,

8 because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free”

(Ephesians 6:5-9).

In Grand Larousse encyclopédique, it says: It comes as no surprise that slavery has continued among Christians until today; the official representatives of the faith have affirmed its validity and accepted its legitimacy.

… to sum up: the Christian religion approved fully of slavery and still does so today. It is very difficult for anyone to prove that Christianity strove to abolish slavery.

The saints affirmed that nature makes some people slaves.

Churchmen did not prevent slavery or oppose it; rather they supported it, to such an extent that the philosopher saint Thomas Aquinas supported the philosophical view that agreed with the view of religious leaders, and he did not object to slavery, rather he praised it because – according to the view of Aristotle – it is one of the conditions in which some people are created naturally, and it does not contradict faith for a man to be content with the lowest position in life.

Haqaa’iq al-Islam by al-‘Aqqaad (p. 215).

In the Dictionary of the Bible by Dr. George Yousuf it says: Christianity did not object to slavery for political or economic reasons, and it did not urge believers to oppose their generation’s views with regard to slavery, or even debate it, and it did not say anything against the rights of slave owners or motivate the slaves to seek independence; it did not discuss the harm or harshness of slavery and it did not enjoin the immediate release of slaves.

It did not change anything in the nature of the relationship between master and slave; on the contrary, it affirmed the rights and duties of both parties.

Contemporary Europe and slavery

It is the reader’s right, in this era of advancement and progress, to ask questions about the pioneers of this progress and the numbers of people who died because of the way in which they were hunted, and who died on their way to the coast where the ships of the English Company and others would wait, then the rest died due to changes in climate. Approximately 4% died as they were being loaded onto the ships, and 12 % during the journey, let alone those who died in the colonies.

The slave trade continued at the hands of English companies that obtained the right of monopoly with the permission of the British government, then gave free rein to British subjects to enslave people. Some experts estimate that the total number of people seized by the British during slavery and exiled to the colonies between 1680 and 1786 CE was around 2,130,000.

When Europe made contact with Black Africa, this contact led to human misery during which the black people of that continent were faced with a major calamity that lasted for five centuries. The states of Europe came up with evil ways of kidnapping these people and bringing them to their lands to serve as fuel for their revival, where they burdened them with more work than they could bear. When America was discovered, the calamity increased and they became slaves in two continents instead of just one.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica says (2/779) on the topic of slavery: Hunting slaves in the villages that were surrounded by the jungle was done by lighting fires in the straw of which the corrals surrounding the villages were made, then when the villagers fled to open land, the British hunted them down with whatever means they had at their disposal.

During the period from 1661 to 1774, for every million Black Africans who reached the Americas, a further nine million died during the hunting, loading and transportation. In other words, only one tenth of those who were hunted survived and actually reached the Americas, where they found no rest or relief, rather they were subjected to hard labour and torture.

At that time, they had laws which any wise person would be ashamed of.

Among these evil laws were those which said that any slave who transgressed against his master was to be killed, and any slave who ran away was to have his hands and feet cut off, and he was to be branded with hot iron; if he ran away again, he was to be killed. How could he run away if his hands and feet had been cut off?!

It was forbidden for a black man to become educated, and the jobs of whites were forbidden to coloureds.

In America, if seven black people gathered together, that was regarded as a crime, and if a white man passed by them it was permissible for him to spit at them and give them twenty lashes.

Another law stated that the blacks had no soul and that they possessed no smartness, intelligence or willpower, and that life existed only in their arms.

To sum up, with regard to his duties and service to his master, the slave was regarded as sane, responsible and punishable if he fell short, but with regard to his rights, he had no soul and no being, and he was not more than a strong pair of arms!

Finally, after many centuries of enslavement and oppression, there came the protocol to abolish slavery and strive to put an end to it, in a resolution issued by the United Nations in 1953 CE.

Hence their consciences did not awaken until the last century, after they had built their civilization on the corpses of free men whom they had enslaved unlawfully. What fair-minded person can compare this with the teachings of Islam, which came fourteen hundred years ago? It seems that accusing Islam with regard to this topic is like the saying, “She accused me of her problem then walked away.”

And Allaah knows best.
Islam for Muslims / Re: What Is The Position Of Islam On Slavery? by subzeeero(m): 3:35pm On Jul 09, 2008
@poster
Take your time and read this if you really want to know the position of islam on slavery.

Praise be to Allaah.

Discussing slavery and asking questions about it on the part of those who promote Christianity and try to divert people from following the religion of Islam is something that annoys the wise person and makes him point the finger of accusation towards the ulterior motives that lie behind these questions.

That is because slavery is well established in Judaism and Christianity, where it has taken unjust forms. They have many books which discuss that in detail and condone it. Therefore it makes you wonder: how can these churchmen call people to Christianity when Christianity condones and legitimizes slavery?

In other words: how can they stir up an issue when they themselves are up to their necks in it?!

The issue of slavery is completely different when discussed from the angles of Christianity and Islam, and when compared with the situation that prevailed at the advent of Islam.

Hence we must discuss this topic in some detail with reference to what is said in Judaism, Christianity and contemporary culture on this matter, then we will speak of slavery in Islam.

Many lies have been fabricated about Islam on this topic, at a time when criminals with lengthy track records are safe and nobody points a finger at them.

Islam and slavery:
Islam affirms that Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, created man fully accountable, and enjoined duties upon him, to which reward and punishment are connected on the basis of man’s free will and choice.

No human being has the right to restrict this freedom or take away that choice unlawfully; whoever dares to do that is a wrongdoer and oppressor.

This is one of the basic principles of Islam. When the question is asked: why does Islam permit slavery? We reply emphatically and without shame that slavery is permitted in Islam, but we should examine the matter with fairness and with the aim of seeking the truth, and we should examine the details of the rulings on slavery in Islam, with regard to the sources and reasons for it, and how to deal with the slave and how his rights and duties are equal to those of the free man, and the ways in which he may earn his freedom, of which there are many in sharee’ah, whilst also taking into consideration the new types of slavery in this world which is pretending to be civilized, modern and progressive.

When Islam came, there were many causes of slavery, such as warfare, debt (where if the debtor could not pay off his debt, he became a slave), kidnapping and raids, and poverty and need.

Slavery did not spread in this appalling manner throughout all continents except by means of kidnapping; rather the main source of slaves in Europe and America in later centuries was this method.

The texts of Islam took a strong stance against this. It says in a hadeeth qudsi: “Allaah, may He be exalted, said: ‘There are three whose opponent I will be on the Day of Resurrection, and whomever I oppose, I will defeat … A man who sold a free man and consumed his price.’” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (2227).

It is worth pointing out that you do not find any text in the Qur’aan or Sunnah which enjoins taking others as slaves, whereas there are dozens of texts in the Qur’aan and the ahaadeeth of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which call for manumitting slaves and freeing them.

There were many sources of slaves at the time of the advent of Islam, whereas the means of manumitting them were virtually nil. Islam changed the way in which slavery was dealt with; it created many new ways of liberating slaves, blocked many ways of enslaving people, and established guidelines which blocked these means.

Islam limited the sources of slaves that existed before the beginning of the Prophet’s mission to one way only: enslavement through war which was imposed on kaafir prisoners-of-war and on their womenfolk and children.

Shaykh al-Shanqeeti (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The reason for slavery is kufr and fighting against Allaah and His Messenger. When Allaah enables the Muslim mujaahideen who are offering their souls and their wealth, and fighting with all their strength and with what Allaah has given them to make the word of Allaah supreme over the kuffaar, then He makes them their property by means of slavery unless the ruler chooses to free them for nothing or for a ransom, if that serves the interests of the Muslims. End quote from Adwa’ al-Bayaan (3/387).

He also said:

If it is said: If the slave becomes Muslim then why keep him as a slave, when the reason for slavery is kufr and fighting against Allaah and His Messenger, so this reason no longer applies?

The answer is that the well known principle among the scholars and all wise people, which is that the previously established right cannot be erased by a right that is established later, and that what came first takes precedence, is obvious.

When the Muslims captured kuffaar, their right to possession was affirmed by the law of the Creator of all, Who is All Wise and All Knowing. So this right is confirmed and established. Then if the slave became Muslim after that, his right to escape slavery by embracing Islam was superseded by the mujaahid’s prior right to take possession of him before he became Muslim, and it would be unjust and unfair to annul the prior right because of a subsequent right, as is well known to all wise people.

Yes, it is good for the master to free the slave if he becomes Muslim. The Lawgiver enjoined and encouraged that, and opened many doors to it. Glory be to the Most Wise, the All Knowing. “And the Word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can change His Words. And He is the All‑Hearer, the All‑Knower” [al-An’aam 6:115].

“in truth” means in what He tells us, and “in justice” means in His rulings.

Undoubtedly this justice refers to owning slaves and other rulings of the Qur’aan.

How many people criticize something sound when their problem is their own misunderstanding. End quote from Adwa’ al-Bayaan (3/389).

Capture of prisoners during war was the most common way of acquiring slaves. Prisoners would inevitably be captured during any war, and the prevalent custom at that time was that prisoners had no protection or rights; they would either be killed or enslaved. But Islam brought two more options: unconditional release or ransom. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Thereafter (is the time) either for generosity (i.e. free them without ransom), or ransom (according to what benefits Islam)” [Muhammad 47:4]. During the battle of Badr the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) accepted ransoms from the mushrik prisoners of war and let them go, and the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) let many of the prisoners go for free, releasing them with no ransom. During the conquest of Makkah it was said to the people of Makkah: “Go, for you are free.”

During the campaign of Banu’l-Mustaliq, the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) married a female prisoner from the defeated tribe so as to raise her status, as she was the daughter of one of their leaders, namely the Mother of the Believers Juwayriyah bint al-Haarith (may Allaah be pleased with her). Then the Muslims let all of these prisoners go.

Islam is not thirsty for the blood of prisoners, nor is it eager to enslave them.

Thus we may understand the limited ways that can lead to slavery. Islam did not abolish it altogether, because the kaafir prisoner who was opposed to truth and justice was a wrongdoer, or was a supporter of wrongdoing or was a tool in the execution or approval of wrongdoing. Letting him go free would give him the opportunity to spread wrongdoing and aggression against others and to oppose the truth and prevent it reaching people.

Freedom is a basic human right which cannot be taken away from a person except for a reason. When Islam accepted slavery within the limits that we have described, it put restrictions on the man who exploits his freedom in the worst possible way. If he was taken prisoner in a war of aggression in which he was defeated, then the proper conduct is to keep him in reasonable conditions throughout his detention.

Despite all that, Islam offers many opportunities to restore freedom to him and people like him.

The principle of dealing with slaves in Islam is a combination of justice, kindness and compassion.

One of the means of liberating slaves is allocating a portion of zakaah funds to freeing slaves; the expiation for accidental killing, zihaar (a jaahili form of divorce that is forbidden), breaking vows and having intercourse during the day in Ramadaan, is to free a slave. In addition to that, Muslims are also encouraged in general terms to free slaves for the sake of Allaah.

This is a brief summary of some of the principles of dealing with slaves in a just and kind manner:

1 – Guaranteeing them food and clothing like that of their masters.

It was narrated that Abu Dharr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “They are your brothers whom Allaah has put under your authority, so if Allaah has put a person’s brother under his authority, let him feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears, and let him not overburden him with work, and if he does overburden him with work, then let him help him.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6050).

2 – Preserving their dignity

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: I heard Abu’l-Qaasim (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “Whoever accuses his slave when he is innocent of what he says will be flogged on the Day of Resurrection, unless he is as he said.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (6858).

Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) manumitted a slave of his, then he picked up a stick or something from the ground and said: There is no more reward in it than the equivalent of this, but I heard the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “Whoever slaps his slave or beats him, his expiation is to manumit him.” Narrated by Muslim (1657).

3 – Being fair towards slaves and treating them kindly

It was narrated that ‘Uthmaan ibn ‘Affaan tweaked the ear of a slave of his when he did something wrong, then he said to him after that: Come and tweak my ear in retaliation. The slave refused but he insisted, so he started to tweak it slightly, and he said to him: Do it strongly, for I cannot bear the punishment on the Day of Resurrection. The slave said: Like that, O my master? The Day that you fear I fear also.

When ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn ‘Awf (may Allaah be pleased with him) walked among his slaves, no one could tell him apart from them, because he did not walk ahead of them, and he did not wear anything different from what they wore.

One day ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab passed by and saw some slaves standing and not eating with their master. He got angry and said to their master: What is wrong with people who are selfish towards their servants? Then he called the servants and they ate with them.

A man entered upon Salmaan (may Allaah be pleased with him) and found him making dough – and he was a governor. He said to him: O Abu ‘Abd-Allaah, what is this? He said: We have sent our servant on an errand and we do not want to give him two jobs at once.

4 – There is nothing wrong with slaves having precedence over free men in some matters

- with regard to any religious or worldly matters in which he excels over him. For example, it is valid for a slave to lead the prayer. ‘Aa’ishah the Mother of the Believers had a slave who would lead her in prayer. Indeed the Muslims have been commanded to hear and obey even if a slave is appointed in charge of their affairs.

5 – A slave may buy himself from his master and be free.

If a person is enslaved for some reason but then it becomes apparent that he has given up his wrongdoing and forgotten his past, and he has become a man who shuns evil and seeks to do good, is it permissible to respond to his request to let him go free? Islam says yes, and there are some fuqaha’ who say that this is obligatory and some who say that it is mustahabb.

This is what is called a mukaatabah or contract of manumission between the slave and his master. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And such of your slaves as seek a writing (of emancipation), give them such writing, if you find that there is good and honesty in them. And give them something (yourselves) out of the wealth of Allaah which He has bestowed upon you”

[al-Noor 24:33]

This is how Islam treats slaves justly and kindly.

One of the results of these guidelines is that in many cases, the slave would become a friend of his master; in some cases the master would regard him as a son. Sa’d ibn Haashim al-Khaalidi said, describing a slave of his:

He is not a slave, rather he is a son whom [Allaah] has put under my care.

He has supported me with his good service; he is my hands and my arms.

Another result of the Muslims treating slaves in this manner is that the slaves became part of Muslim families as if they were also family members.

Gustave le Bon says in Hadaarat al-‘Arab (Arab Civilization) (p. 459-460): What I sincerely believe is that slavery among the Muslims is better than slavery among any other people, and that the situation of slaves in the east is better than that of servants in Europe, and that slaves in the east are part of the family. Slaves who wanted to be free could attain freedom by expressing their wish. But despite that, they did not resort to exercising this right. End quote.
Islam for Muslims / Re: Islam And Place Of Worship by subzeeero(m): 11:20am On Jul 08, 2008
The question was about praying in the graveyard and praying in a mosque with a grave in it. i think this will answer your question.

Praise be to Allaah.

1 – The issue of praying at graves

Praying at graves is of two types:

The first type is praying to the occupant of the grave. This is major shirk which puts a person beyond the pale of Islam, because prayer is an act of worship, and it is not permissible to do any act of worship to anyone other than Allaah. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Worship Allaah and join none with Him (in worship)”

[al-Nisa’ 4:36]

“Verily, Allaah forgives not (the sin of) setting up partners (in worship) with Him, but He forgives whom He wills, sins other than that, and whoever sets up partners in worship with Allaah, has indeed strayed far away”

[al-Nisa’ 4:116]

The second type is praying to Allaah in the graveyard. This covers a number of issues:

1 – Praying the funeral (janaazah) prayer at the graveside, which is permissible.

Example: if a person dies and you are not able to offer the funeral prayer for him in the mosque, then it is permissible for you to offer the prayer for him after he is buried.

The evidence for this is that this is what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah that a black man or a black woman used to clean the mosque, and he (or she) died. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked about him and they said, “He died.” He said, “Why did you not tell me? Show me to his grave (or her grave).” So he went to the grave and offered the funeral prayer. (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 458; Muslim, 956).

2 – Praying the funeral prayer in the graveyard, which is permissible

Example: a person dies and you are not able to offer the funeral prayer for him in the mosque, so you go to the graveyard and offer the prayer there before he is buried.

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “It is permissible to offer the funeral prayer for the deceased inside the graveyard just as it is permissible to offer the funeral prayer for him after he is buried, because it was proven that a woman used to clean the mosque and she died. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) asked about her and they said, ‘She died.’ He said, ‘Why did you not tell me? Show me to her grave.’ So they showed him and he offered the prayer for her, then he said, ‘These graves are filled with darkness for their occupants, but Allaah illuminates them by my prayer over them.’” (Narrated by Muslim, 956.)

From Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 8/392

3 – Praying in the graveyard – apart from the funeral (janaazah) prayer – this prayer is invalid and does not count, whether it is an obligatory prayer or a naafil(Voluntary) prayer.

The evidence for that is as follows:

(i) The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “All the earth is a mosque apart from the graveyards and bathrooms.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 317; Ibn Maajah, 745; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah, 606).

(ii) The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “May Allaah curse the Jews and the Christians, for they have taken the graves of their Prophets as places of worship.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 435; Muslim, 529).

(iii) Praying in graveyards may be a means that leads to worshipping the graves, or to imitating those who worship graves. Hence, because the kaafirs used to prostrate to the sun as it was rising and setting, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade us to pray when the sun is rising or setting, lest that be taken as a means that leads to worshipping the sun instead of Allaah, or to resembling the kuffaar.

4 – Praying towards the graveyard, which is haraam, according to the correct opinion.

Example: you pray with a graveyard or grave in the direction of your qiblah, but you are not praying in the graveyard, rather you are praying on some other ground that is close to the graveyard, with no wall or barrier between you and it.

The evidence for this being haraam:

(i) It was narrated that Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not sit on graves, or pray towards them.” (Narrated by Muslim, 972). This indicates that it is haraam to pray towards graveyards or towards graves or towards a single grave.

(ii) The reason why it is not allowed to pray towards a graveyard is the same as the reason why it is not allowed to pray towards a grave. So long as a person is facing towards the grave or graveyard in such a way that it may be said that he is praying towards it, then this comes under the prohibition, and if it comes under the prohibition then it is not valid, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Do not pray …” The prohibition here is on praying, so if a person prays towards a grave, he is combining obedience and disobedience, and it is not possible to draw closer to Allaah in such a manner.

Note: If there is a wall between you and the graveyard, then the basic principle is that it is acceptable to pray in this case and it is not prohibited. Similarly, if there is a street or a considerable distance which would mean that you cannot be regarded as praying towards the graves, then this is acceptable. And Allaah knows best.

See al-Mughni, 1/403; al-Sharh al-Mumti’ by Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 2/232.

2 – Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about the ruling on praying in a mosque in which there is a grave.

He replied:

Praying in a mosque in which there is a grave falls into two categories:

(i) Either the grave was there before the mosque, and the mosque was built over the grave. It is essential to shun this mosque and not pray therein, and the one who built it must knock it down; if he does not do so, then the Muslim authorities must knock it down.

(ii) Or the mosque was there before the grave, and the deceased was buried after the mosque was built. In the case the grave must be dug up, and the remains taken out and buried with the people (in the graveyard).

As for praying in such a mosque, it is permissible so long as the grave is not in front of the worshipper, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade praying in the direction of graves.

With regard to the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which is incorporated into his mosque, it is well known that the Mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was built before his death, and was not built over his grave. It is also well known that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was not buried in the mosque, rather he was buried in his house which was separate from the mosque. At the time of al-Waleed ibn ‘Abd al-Malik he wrote to his governor in Madeenah, who was ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez, in 88 AH, ordering him to dismantle the Prophet’s Mosque and add to it the rooms of the wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). ‘Umar gathered the prominent people and fuqaha’, and read the letter of the caliph al-Waleed to them. That caused them distress, and they said: “Leave it as it is, that is better.” And it was narrated that Sa’eed ibn al-Musayyib denounced the incorporation of ‘Aa’ishah’s room into the mosque, as if he feared that the grave would be taken as a place of worship.

Umar wrote a letter to that effect to al-Waleed, and al-Waleed sent word to him ordering him to carry out his instructions, so ‘Umar had no other choice. So you see that the grave of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was not placed in the mosque, and the mosque was not built over it, so there are no grounds for those who try to quote this as evidence that people may be buried inside mosques or that mosques may be built over graves.

It is not permissible for anyone to discuss matters of sharee’ah except scholars of sharee’ah who are specialized and qualified to research and examine issues.

If you take the words of any other complete muslim who is not among the scholars of sharee'ah, you are doing so at your own risk, and you should desist from transmitting such opinions because if anyone uses it, you will get a share of the punishment, if it is wrong.

Fatawa: SINGING AND MUSIC ACCORDING TO SHARI'AH

Question:

Are singing, music and Qawwali all prohibited? I have heard that the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has granted permission for this. Is this true?

M. Aslam, London

Answer:

Before I reply to the question, you need to understand two things. The Islamic Shari'ah is not based on what people say and hear, but is based on the Qur'ân and Sunnah. Therefore, it is important that we check everything according to the Qur'ân and Sunnah. Secondly, if something becomes popular and common among people, it doesn't automatically make it lawful and Halal in Islam.

The previous question gives a reply to singing and music according to Shari'ah. In addition, note that the four scholars of different schools of thought have all strongly condemned such activities. Imam Shafi'i said, "If someone likes these things a lot, he won't even be eligible as a witness for anyone." Imam Abu Hanifah and Imam Ahmed bin Hambal stated that, "It is Haram."

Imam Malik said, "Those involved in singing and music are sinners and bad people."

Regarding the approval by the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم), he has given permission to meaningful poems etc. and not the obscene material we listen to nowadays. It is not permissible because songs nowadays contain obscene words and meanings; mostly women are singing and music has become a part of people's daily routine. Hence it is a time-wasting activity.

In the time of the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) companions and children used to sing songs on happy occasions of Eid and also at times to encourage people for Jihad, obviously being meaningful poetry.

Islam for Muslims / Re: What Is Jihad? by subzeeero(m): 9:24am On Jul 02, 2008
AA,

Jihad can never be translated as holy war, the Arabic phrase for holy war is harbal muqaddasa and it doesn't appear anywhere in the Qur'an.

It is disheartening to see somebody who has lost his faith for any reason, but for you my friend, it is more disheartening because you lost your faith because of worldly things(according to my understanding of your write up).

We have been reminded numerous times that this world is the paradise of the unbelievers and a prison for the believers, so don't expect everything to be going smoothly in your life if you believe. This is because, this world is a testing ground not a rewarding ground. You are to be tested with the things you mostly love to really certify your belief and if you pass, you are promised eternal bliss in paradise. On the other hand if you fail you get to be punished accordingly.

Success in this world is only for a limited time but success in the next world is eternal. So, don't judge your success by what you may achieve in this world as you will die one day and leave everything behind.

Pious people usually evaluate themselves if they don't face challenges in their life because they think that they have done something wrong and Allah is waiting for the hereafter to punish them.

My advice for my fellow nairalanders is to seek success in this world with caution, as we will leave everything in this world one day and face our Creator with our deeds.

Asamuel, i urge you to settle down and rethink what success you want and then choose a path that will take you to it.
Politics / Re: Kano Youths Inhale Gutter Odour To Get High. by subzeeero(m): 8:28am On Jul 02, 2008
I am not supporting the current government but gutter sniffing did not start during Yaradua's term, it has been there for a long time. People do all sorts of things to get high, some even sniff dirty footbal players' socks.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Music In Islam by subzeeero(m): 6:37pm On Jun 27, 2008
AA,
I agree with you that Islam is easy and we shouldn't make it hard, but the issue of using daff (the drum you described) is controversial because of the difference of opinion of major scholars. For example,

This hadeeth indicates that all musical instruments are haraam, including the daff.

‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The daff is haraam, stringed instruments are haraam, drums are haraam and flutes are haraam. Narrated by al-Bayhaqi, 10/222

But there are some ahaadeeth which indicate that it is permissible to beat the daff in some circumstances, which are:
Eid, weddings, and when one who has been away returns.

Some scholars believe that only women should do it and men should not copy them, while others believe that everybody can use it and in all circumstances.

Therefore, i urge my brothers in Islam to always avoid controversial issues if possible in seeking the right path.

Islam for Muslims / Re: Missed Calls From The House Of Allah! by subzeeero(m): 5:34pm On Jun 27, 2008
AA,
I just want to add to what my brother has written.

It is obligatory upon the one who hears the call to prayer given in a normal voice, without the use of loudspeakers, to respond and attend the prayer in congregation in the mosque from which the call is given, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "Whoever hears the call and does not come [to the mosque], there is no prayer for him, except for one who has an excuse." This was narrated by Ibn Maajah, al-Daaraqutni, Ibn Hibbaan and al-Haakim with a saheeh isnaad.

Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) was asked what counts as an excuse. He said, "Fear or sickness." Muslim narrated in his Saheeh from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that a blind man said, "O Messenger of Allaah, I do not have anyone to guide me to the mosque; may I have a dispensation to let me pray in my house?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, "Can you hear the call to prayer?" He said, "Yes." He said, "Then respond."

My dear brothers, i am afraid that our sentiments are blocking our logical reasoning. We need to find out what really transpired, what words were sang e.t.c before making judgements.
I believe verbal attacks should be retaliated by verbal attacks. So, whatever they said should have been retaliated verbally without the use of force.

However, if somebody abuses your mother in front of you, what will you do?
would you report to the police?

Have it in mind that the love for Allah(SWT) and prophet Muhammad(SAW) is more than that of the parents in a pious muslim's heart.
