Politics › Orji Declares 70 Per Cent Of Aba Structures Illegal by Sunofgod(op): 9:56pm On Aug 19, 2011
From Gordi Udeajah, Umuahia

GOVERNOR Theodore Orji of Abia State has declared 70 per cent of structures erected in Aba, the commercial hub of the state, as illegal.

Orji said on Monday that his government was set to address the malady without minding the consequences.

Recently, a task force headed by the Security Adviser to the Governor, Captain Udonsi Awa (rtd), demolished some illegal structures in the state. The task force will also review the conversion of unauthorised areas and buildings into motor parks, shops and markets and compel the culprits to move into designated areas.

Orji spoke when members of the Aba Global System of Mobil Communications (GSM) Association paid him a visit to solicit for his assistance to have a GSM Plaza.

The governor lamented that all efforts made by the government to sanitise Aba had failed because of the attitude of the residents who are mostly traders.

He said: "I will be failing in my duties if I do not return Aba to its old glory. Things have to be corrected and we will not get tired of having illegal premises locked up or demolished. When the right business and orderly environment is put in place like the government is striving to do, investors will come".

The group's leader and Managing Director of Mckings Systems Ltd, Mr. Marcel Ezeh, said: "We have come to thank you for the enabling environment created by your government for business to thrive and the checking of kidnapping. We are pleased to observe that the environmental task force is at work in Aba, demolishing illegally erected structures and opening up blocked gutters and drainages".

He, however, told Orji that "while the task force should pursue its assignment relentlessly, your government should please set up a committee to advise on the immediate creation of alternative business settlements for artisans, traders and craftsmen, who are being displaced".

Ado Ekiti-Awoman believed to be in her 30sin Iyin Ekiti, Irepodun/Ifelogun Local Government Area of Ekiti State, has given birth to a strangelooking baby.

Thewoman, (name withheld) and a mother of two, was pregnant for 13 monthsand was said to have undergone several tests atvarious private hospitals inthe statewhere she was assured of aset of twins.

Weired baby delivered by a woman in Ekiti

She was said to have delivered the strange creature at the General Hospital in the town through a Cesarean Section in the hospital at about 2.15 pm lastThursday.

The birth of the fearful baby caused a stir in the hospital as medical officials were seen discussing the strange birth , while others trooped to the hospital from the town andneighbouring communities to see the"strange baby''

Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr. Wole Olugboji, confirmed the delivery.

His words; "There was a woman who gave birth to a strange baby at General Hospital Iyin. The baby is dead but the mother is okay."

He said the mother of thebaby was still unconscious due to the sedation administered to her before the CS to ensure she did not see the creature.

The commissioner noted that the strange birth was quickly disposed off to save the parents from embarrassment.

Vanguard gathered that the woman's husband was present in the delivery room and approved of the quick burial of the strange creature.

A source at the hospital told Vanguard that the strange ‘baby’ hastwo bulging eyes and few strand of hair on the forehead. The creature had no brain. Its head was open at the back and you can see mucus inside the head instead of brain. It was a strange creature that nobody seems to have seen before."

Another source said that the creature was very tiny at birth. The delivery was abnormal as the fluid which was drained from the mother's body was in excess. The baby must have been deformed due to the effects of some drugs or herbs. That is why we always ask pregnant women not to take any drug unless prescribed by a qualified doctor. We cannot rule it out that the deformity might have been caused by concoction. It is possible."

Politics › Seizure Of 130 Houses Sparks Protest In Lagos by Sunofgod(op): 9:46pm On Aug 19, 2011
Sesan Olufowobi

http://odili.net/news/source/2011/aug/17/819.html

One hundred and thirty home owners in Ilamoshe community in Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, Lagos State, on Tuesday protested against what they said was the illegal seizure of 130 houses in the community at the office of the state Attorney-General in the state government Secretariat, Alausa.

The protesters, who arrived at the secretariat around 11am with placards, demanded the immediate intervention of the government.

Some of the placards read, 'Ilamoshe under siege;' 'our house are under lock and key;' 'Save our soul;' 'Save us;' and 'I am 87 years old, I can't sleep under the bridge;' among others.

The Chairman of the Ilamoshe Community Development Association, Mr. Val Iwuchukwu, told journalists that the residents had been locked out of their houses since August 5 by hoodlums.

He explained that the residents were first served with quit notices for illegally occupying the land which the notice said did not belong to them.

Iwuchukwu explained that the residents had purchased about 150 plots of land from one Odubada family about 30 years ago before another family, Samuel Ojo family, started laying claim to the land after a court judgment.

The residents said their investigation revealed that the Ojo family, which sent the quit notice, had won a land case against the Odubada family both at the High and Appeal Courts over the land in question.

They said they had inaugurated a committee to have dialogue with the family through their counsel, Cornelius Odunsi, but their efforts failed.

"That is why we have come to the governor to intervene. There are over 100 thugs now in the community that are tormenting our children. There are over 130 families that have been unjustly ejected from their homes by the hoodlums," he said.

Chairman of the Council, Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, who led the residents, said the protest was aimed at seeking the intervention of the state government to compel the plaintiff to enable the residents to have access to their homes.

He said in executing the court judgment, the family exceeded the stipulated boundary, thus harassing the residents who had nothing to do with the judgment.

"We are demanding the immediate unlocking of all the gates of houses that have been locked for the past one week. We are demanding that the Ojo family be brought to roundtable so that we can engage them," Bamigbetan said.

"We insist that the Ojo family has to respect the rights of the residents to collectively engage them in bargaining for the best way out of the matter. These residents are also insisting that many of them are not affected by the court verdict, they are requesting that the plaintiff in this case should be transparent enough to present the exact boundaries and exact configuration of the territory they are talking about, so that we can identify the number of properties within this territory and then we know those who are actually affected and who are not."

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Justice Sector Reforms, Mr. Lanre Akinsola who spoke with the residents, said the Commissioner, Mr. Ade Ipaye, had received the petition on the matter and had since set up a committee to resolve it.

ABUJA- Former Military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida has given notice of his intention to marry a new wife following the demise of his wife, Dr. Maryam Babangida.

In an exclusive interview with Vanguard ahead of his 70th birthday today, Gen. Babangida debunked claims that he secretly married a wife about four months ago asserting such a marriage existed only in the imagination of some section of the media.

In the wide ranging interview, Babangida linked the military intervention led by Gen. Sani Abacha that sacked the interim government of Chief Ernest Shonekan to the agitation of civil society even as he justified his support for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in the 1999 presidential election as the best decision at that time. He rated Obasanjo a success based on the fundamental parameter of unifying the country which he said informed his selection at that time.

On speculations that he had secretly married, "I have not re-married. You are not the only one who heard. A close friend of mine heard and came to the house to find out. I took him around to all the rooms a wife would have been if I re-married. It is the soft sell media that would like to make huge sales that come up with that type of story," he told Vanguard.

But in a session with selected newsmen in Minna yesterday Babangida gave notice of his readiness to marry.

"Yes, I will get a new wife, no name yet but I know what I want and who is coming into this house and one thing I cannot also tell you now is when exactly she is coming in."

Gen. Babangida who was full of life and radiating with smiles throughout the interactive session said he gives glory to God for successfully navigating the turbulence that characterized political office especially as a Military President.

He, however, ruled himself out from further partisan political pursuit saying:

"I am now 70 years. By 2015, I will be about 75 years so at that age, what would I still be looking for. Count me out. That time, I will be in Minna to attend to people who call on me for political and other consultations," the former military president said.

Recalling his saddest moments in life, Gen. Babangida said it was when he lost his bosom friend simply identified as Lt. Col Mohammed in 1974 who he said died in a crash and also the death of his wife, Maryam.

He, however, recounted his most joyful moments to be the day he got married and when he was appointed the military president for the country after a successful military coup.

Gen. Babangida described the public execution of his bosom friend and colleague, Gen. Vatsa following allegations of a coup plot as the most traumatizing decision ever taken in his life. He prayed never to find himself in such a position again.

According to him, "it was a military law which could not be amended. We all got caught up in the coup Decree of 1976 which gave no room for an alternative but only death through public execution. If I tell you that it was not traumatizing, I must be lying and I pray I will never find myself in such a situation again."

The former military president also touched on other National issues such as the amendment of the constitution of the country, the re-occurring June 12 issue and the way forward for the country.

Jonathan congratulates IBB

President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday congratulated Babangida on the occasion of his 70th birthday which comes up today. A statement by Dr Reuben Abati, prayed God Almighty to bless him with "many more years of robust health, prosperity and continued distinguished service to our nation.”"Looking back over the past 70 years, I am sure that you, your family and indeed your larger family of associates and admirers do have cause to be grateful to Almighty God for having granted you a life of great accomplishment and abiding fulfillment."

"You did not only rise to the pinnacle of your chosen career in the military, you also rose to become President of Nigeria for eight years," President Jonathan wrote.

so how would you feel if masses of unskilled uneducated Europeans descended on Nigeria. in Zimbabwe white people have their farms looted and burnt, even in south africa white people are now discriminated against  and yet Africans here are treated fairly Africans? hypocrisy? Is a lebanese person born in Nigeria Nigerian, no he's lebanese who happens to be in Nigerian same applies for an african in the Uk.
Firstly, Africans are not treated fairly in europe.

Secondly, a white man born in Zimbabwe is not Zimbabwean - He's a European.

Just as Africans are not the majority landowners in Europe, Europeans cannot be the majority landowners in any country in Africa.

Mugabe was right in what he did in Zimbabwe. Just as Idi Amin was right in what he did in Uganda.

Africa is for Africans.

She has a point - there are so many useless graduates in Nigeria.

But they are a product of our useless educational system.

The same Govt that refers to them as a burden helped created them - so the Govt needs to take responsibility.

Many wouldn't have obtained degree's from a foreign institution because their standards of education are a lot higher.

Maybe Nigeria needs to re-introduce polytechnics?

Corruption can be found in all the above systems. No matter whats implemented in Nigeria there will be a tendency by a few to dominate the majorrity.
Politics › Another Nigerian Killed In London. . . . . . . by Sunofgod(op): 7:02pm On Aug 15, 2011
Kevin Chibueze died at 1pm following surgery at the Royal London Hospital, Whitechapel.

Just hours earlier, at 4am, paramedics and police were called to the scene in High Road, close to the police station.

Detectives believe two groups, containing 15 to 20 people in total, were involved in a disturbance following a private party at a property off High Road.

The argument spilled out into High Road, and then into the car park next to Lidl and Fitness First, where it is believe the teenager was stabbed.

An incident room has opened at the Homicide and Serious Crime Command under Det Ch Insp John Macdonald.

Mr Macdonald said: “There were people shouting and bottles thrown in what is a busy area even at that time of night.

“My appeal is to members of the public who may have seen what was going on to contact us and also anyone involved in these two groups to come forward and tell us what happened.”

A post-mortem examination on the body of Mr Chibueze, of Croydon, will take place on Wednesday in East Ham.

Forensics officers have spent most of today at the scene of the stabbing, with a cordon in place form Ilford Police Station to Lynton House.

Anyone with information is asked to call the incident room on 020 8345 3985 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
