Humanity first left the solar system in 2012 when the Voyager 1 probe passed into interstellar space decades after leaving the planets behind. Now, there’s a second spacecraft beyond the limits of our solar system: Voyager 2. Luckily, Voyager 2’s instruments are in somewhat better shape than Voyager 1’s, so scientists were able to observe the transition from the heliosphere, which is dominated by the sun, to the interstellar medium (ISM). Both Voyager probes launched in 1977, with Voyager 2 heading into space a few weeks before Voyager 1. The two probes are physically identical, but they took different paths through the solar system. They took advantage of the “Grand Tour,” an alignment of the planets that occurs only once every 175 years. Voyager 1 visited and got gravity assists from Jupiter and Saturn before heading off toward the edge of the solar system. Voyager 2 swung past Jupter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. It made its last planetary observation of Uranus in 1989, almost a decade after Voyager 1 had started its long march toward the edge of the solar system. When Voyager 1 reached the edge of our solar system, known as the heliopause, it no longer had a functional plasma spectrometer. As a result, there was some debate about when, exactly, the probe left our solar system. So, we missed the expected transition from warm solar plasma to the denser cold plasma of the ISM. Eventually, measurements of local electrons and magnetic field shifts confirmed it was in interstellar space. Voyager 2 has just sent back data proving that it has also crossed the heliopause, and it had a fully functional plasma spectrometer. The transition happened about a year ago in November 2018, and the changeover was roughly in-line with what scientists expected based on Voyager 1’s indirect readings. As Voyager 2 crossed from the heliosphere to the ISM, it detected a 20-fold increase in plasma density. The approximate positions of Voyager 1 and 2. Voyager 1 and 2 crossed the heliopause at roughly the same distance from the sun, 121.6 AU and 119 AU, respectively. However, their exit points were about 150 AU apart. Scientists are studying the discrepancies in the data in hopes of gaining a better understanding of the boundary between our solar system and the wider galaxy. For example, Voyager 2 detected a continuous change in magnetic field directions as it crossed into the ISM, whereas Voyager 1 did not. Voyager 2 has also continued to see low-energy particles from the sun in the ISM, but Voyager 1 didn’t. It will be some time before we have more data to study. The only functional probe that has any hope of reaching the heliopause is New Horizons, which is currently flying through the Kuiper Belt. It could leave the solar system around 2040, but we don’t know if it will maintain communication with Earth that long.

The 3M22 Zircon or the SS-N-33 is a maneuvering anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile developed in Russia.[i] The Zircon’s estimated range is 500 km at a low level and up to 750 km at a semi-ballistic trajectory, but the state-owned media in Russia reports the range as 1,000 km.It’s a two-stage missile that uses solid fuel in the first stage and a scramjet motor in the second stage. This missile will be incorporated into the Kirov-class battlecruiser Admiral Nakhimov this year and the Pyotr Velikiy in 2022. Strategic Implications The Zircon missile is strategically valuable due primarily to its speed. In April 2017, it was reported that the Zircon had reached a speed of Mach 8 during a test.If that information is accurate, the Zircon missile would be the fastest in the world, making it nearly impossible to defend against due to its speed alone. Another valuable aspect of the missile is its plasma cloud. During flight, the missile is completely covered by a plasma cloud that absorbs any rays of radio frequencies and makes the missile invisible to radars. This allows the missile to remain undetected on its way to the target.

US President Donald Trump fired State Department Inspector General Steve Linick, saying he had lost confidence in the watchdog's ability to serve. Trump did not give a reason for his loss of confidence but said in a letter late Friday that his removal would be effective in 30 days. Linick, who was appointed inspector general in 2013 during the Obama administration, is the latest in a series of independent government watchdogs to be ousted in recent weeks. Democratic lawmakers heavily criticized Linick's removal, suggesting he may have been targeted for opening an investigation into Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Read more: US drops criminal case against ex-Trump adviser Michael Flynn 'Act of retaliation' House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel accused Trump of acting to protect "one of his most loyal supporters." "Mr Linick's dismissal in the midst of such an investigation strongly suggests that this is an unlawful act of retaliation," he said. He did not elaborate on the details of the alleged probe, but a Democratic congressional aide cited by news agency Agence France-Presse said Linick was looking into claims that Pompeo had misused a political appointee to carry out personal tasks for himself and his wife. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Linick was being "punished for honorably performing his duty to protect the Constitution and our national security.'' She said the dismissal marked an acceleration of "a dangerous patter of retaliation" from Trump.

Russian investigators have refused to drop a murder charge against three sisters who killed their abusive father as he slept, leaving a controversial case in legal limbo. The general prosecutor's office concluded earlier this year that the Khachaturyan sisters had been subjected to prolonged physical and sexual abuse. The killing should therefore be seen as "necessary self-defence", it said. That ruling had been expected to close the case. But a lawyer for one of the women has told the BBC that Russia's investigative committee has now rejected the prosecutor's position. What did the sisters do? Teenagers Maria, Angelina and Krestina Khachaturyan were arrested in July 2018 for attacking their father, Mikhail, using a knife, hammer and pepper spray. They later testified that their father had subjected them to prolonged abuse effectively holding them hostage in their home. The two older sisters could face up to 20 years in prison if the murder charge is eventually brought to court. Their mother, who had been forced to flee the family home for her own safety, has previously told the BBC that she and others complained to police multiple times over the years about the violence but were ignored. Abused sisters who killed father touch Russian hearts Russian domestic violence: Women fight back Russia may drop murder charge in sisters case What does the investigators' decision mean? "Formally, the investigative committee conducted an additional investigation but reached the same conclusion [as before]," lawyer Alexei Lipser explained, meaning that the original charge of premeditated murder still stands. "It seems the order from above remains the same," he said. However, as there is no new evidence, the lawyer believes the prosecutor's position will also remain unchanged. "Now, either the investigators have to agree with the prosecutor and change the charge [to self-defence] or it goes on ping-ponging back and forth," the lawyer said. How sisters' case sparked uproar The case prompted protests and a mass petition in support of the women and increased calls for a new law against domestic violence. In January, the prosecutor's office found that the Khachaturyan sisters suffered "beating, constant humiliation, threats and abuse, physical and sexual violence" and so developed a "defensive reaction". It concluded that experience made them "protect themselves by any means", an argument the investigative committee has now dismissed. The case cannot go to court unless those two parties agree on the charge. The three sisters are living separately in Moscow while awaiting trial, and are not allowed to communicate with each other. Speaking at a briefing on Wednesday, WHO emergencies director Dr Mike Ryan warned against trying to predict when the virus would disappear. He added that even if a vaccine is found, controlling the virus will require a "massive effort". Almost 300,000 people worldwide are reported to have died with coronavirus, and more than 4.3m cases recorded. The UN meanwhile warned the pandemic was causing widespread distress and mental ill health - particularly in countries where there's a lack of investment in mental healthcare. The UN urged governments to make mental health considerations part of their overall response. What did WHO say? "It is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away," Dr Ryan told the virtual press conference from Geneva. "HIV has not gone away - but we have come to terms with the virus." Dr Ryan then said he doesn't believe "anyone can predict when this disease will disappear". There are currently more than 100 potential vaccines in development - but Dr Ryan noted there are other illnesses, such as measles, that still haven't been eliminated despite there being vaccines for them. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed it was still possible to control the virus, with effort. "The trajectory is in our hands, and it's everybody's business, and we should all contribute to stop this pandemic," he said. WHO epidemiologist Maria van Kerkhove also told the briefing: "We need to get into the mindset that it is going to take some time to come out of this pandemic." LOCKDOWN UPDATE: What's changing, where? THE R NUMBER: What it means and why it matters GLOBAL SPREAD: Tracking the pandemic RECOVERY: How long does it take to get better? A SIMPLE GUIDE: What are the symptoms? Their stark remarks come as several countries began to gradually ease lockdown measures, and leaders consider the issue of how and when to reopen their economies. Dr Tedros warned that there was no guaranteed way of easing restrictions without triggering a second wave of infections. "Many countries would like to get out of the different measures," the WHO boss said. "But our recommendation is still the alert at any country should be at the highest level possible." Dr Ryan added: "There is some magical thinking going on that lockdowns work perfectly and that unlocking lockdowns will go great. Both are fraught with dangers. BBC News |

Breonna Taylor, a 26-year-old emergency medical technician (EMT), was shot eight times when officers entered her apartment in Louisville on 13 March. They were executing a search warrant as part of a drugs investigation, but no drugs were found in the property. The lawsuit accuses the officers of wrongful death and excessive force. It was filed by Ms Taylor's family last month and says the officers were not looking for her or her partner - but for an unrelated suspect who was already in custody and did not live in the apartment complex. Louisville police said they returned fire after one officer was shot and wounded in the incident. Hate crime charges considered over jogger killing Arbery mum 'believes there will be justice' At a press conference on 13 March, the department said its officers knocked on the door several times and announced themselves as police. But a lawyer for Ms Taylor's partner, Kenneth Walker, said he fired in self-defence because the officers did not identify themselves and he believed they were breaking in. The lawsuit alleges that the police then fired more than 20 rounds of ammunition into the home. The department has declined to answer questions on the case citing an ongoing investigation. "Breonna had posed no threat to the officers and did nothing to deserve to die at their hands," the lawsuit reads. "Shots were blindly fired by the officers all throughout Breonna's home," it added. The family, which is seeking compensation and damages, has hired a prominent civil rights lawyer to represent them. Ben Crump has represented the families of other high-profile black shooting victims, such as Trayvon Martin and Ahmaud Arbery. Mr Arbery was jogging in February when he was confronted by two men and fatally shot. The men have been arrested and the justice department is considering bringing federal hate crime charges against them. "We stand with the family of this young woman in demanding answers from the Louisville Police Department," Mr Crump said in a statement. "Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding her death, the department has not provided any answers regarding the facts and circumstances of how this tragedy occurred, nor have they taken responsibility for her senseless killing." |
