The USS Indianapolis had delivered the crucial components of the first operational atomic bomb to a naval base on the Pacific island of Tinian. On August 6, 1945, the weapon would level Hiroshima. But now, on July 28, the Indianapolis sailed from Guam, without an escort, to meet the battleship USS Idaho in the Leyte Gulf in the Philippines and prepare for an invasion of Japan. The next day was quiet, with the Indianapolis making about 17 knots through swells of five or six feet in the seemingly endless Pacific. As the sun set over the ship, the sailors played cards and read books; some spoke with the ship’s priest, Father Thomas Conway. But shortly after midnight, a Japanese torpedo hit the Indianapolis in the starboard bow, blowing almost 65 feet of the ship’s bow out of the water and igniting a tank containing 3,500 gallons of aviation fuel into a pillar of fire shooting several hundred feet into the sky. Then another torpedo from the same submarine hit closer to midship, hitting fuel tanks and powder magazines and setting off a chain reaction of explosions that effectively ripped the Indianapolis in two. Still traveling at 17 knots, the Indianapolis began taking on massive amounts of water; the ship sank in just 12 minutes. Of the 1,196 men aboard, 900 made it into the water alive. Their ordeal—what is considered the worst shark attack in history—was just beginning. As the sun rose on July 30, the survivors bobbed in the water. Life rafts were scarce. The living searched for the dead floating in the water and appropriated their lifejackets for survivors who had none. Hoping to keep some semblance of order, survivors began forming groups—some small, some over 300—in the open water. Soon enough they would be staving off exposure, thirst—and sharks. The animals were drawn by the sound of the explosions, the sinking of the ship and the thrashing and blood in the water. Though many species of shark live in the open water, none is considered as aggressive as the oceanic whitetip. Reports from the Indianapolis survivors indicate that the sharks tended to attack live victims close to the surface, leading historians to believe that most of the shark-related causalities came from oceanic whitetips. The first night, the sharks focused on the floating dead. But the survivors’ struggles in the water only attracted more and more sharks, which could feel their motions through a biological feature known as a lateral line: receptors along their bodies that pick up changes in pressure and movement from hundreds of yards away. As the sharks turned their attentions toward the living, especially the injured and the bleeding, sailors tried to quarantine themselves away from anyone with an open wound, and when someone died, they would push the body away, hoping to sacrifice the corpse in return for a reprieve from a shark’s jaw. Many survivors were paralyzed with fear, unable even to eat or drink from the meager rations they had salvaged from their ship. One group of survivors made the mistake of opening a can of Spam—but before they could taste it, the scent of the meat drew a swarm of sharks around them. They got rid of their meat rations rather than risk a second swarming. The sharks fed for days, with no sign of rescue for the men. Navy intelligence had intercepted a message from the Japanese submarine that had torpedoed the Indianapolis describing how it had sunk an American battleship along the Indianapolis’ route, but the message was disregarded as a trick to lure American rescue boats into an ambush. In the meantime, the Indianapolis survivors learned that they had the best odds in a group, and ideally in the center of the group. The men on the margins or, worse, alone, were the most susceptible to the sharks. As the days passed, many survivors succumbed to heat and thirst, or suffered hallucinations that compelled them to drink the seawater around them—a sentence of death by salt poisoning. Those who so slaked their thirst would slip into madness, foaming at the mouth as their tongues and lips swelled. They often became as great a threat to the survivors as the sharks circling below—many dragged their comrades underwater with them as they died. After 11:00 a.m. on their fourth day in the water, a Navy plane flying overhead spotted the Indianapolis survivors and radioed for help. Within hours, another seaplane, manned by Lieutenant Adrian Marks, returned to the scene and dropped rafts and survival supplies. When Marks saw men being attacked by sharks, he disobeyed orders and landed in the infested waters, and then began taxiing his plane to help the wounded and stragglers, who were at the greatest risk. A little after midnight, the USS Doyle arrived on the scene and helped to pull the last survivors from the water. Of the Indianapolis’ original 1,196-man crew, only 317 remained. Estimates of the number who died from shark attacks range from a few dozen to almost 150. It’s impossible to be sure. But either way, the ordeal of the Indianapolis survivors remains the worst maritime disaster in U.S. naval history.

President Trump has taken the extraordinary step of threatening to close down social media platforms. The threat came after Twitter added fact-check links to his tweets for the first time. The battle between the president and the social-media companies has been brewing for a time. But now it feels as though an all-out war is looming between Donald Trump and Twitter ahead of the US presidential election, in November. Last night, a couple of Trump tweets raging about "fraudulent" postal ballots in US elections featured - for some users but not all - a strapline linking to what Twitter called "facts about mail-in ballots." This then led to a page debunking the president's claims but featuring articles from two organisations he regards as his sworn enemies, CNN and the Washington Post. It took him no time to fight back, tweeting: "Twitter is completely stifling free speech, and I, as President, will not allow it to happen." Then, on Wednesday morning, the president woke up and raised the temperature even further with this two-part tweet: "Republicans feel that social-media platforms totally silence conservatives voices. "We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen. "We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. "We can't let a more sophisticated version of that... happen again - just like we can't let largescale mail-in ballots take root in our country. "It would be a free-for-all on cheating, forgery and the theft of ballots. "Whoever cheated the most would win. "Likewise, social media. "Clean up your act, now." Conspiracy theories So does he mean any of this? It is very hard to see Congress passing laws to strongly regulate or close down social-media platforms. The president refers to free speech. But as a private company, Twitter is free to police its platform as it sees fit. Nevertheless, for Twitter's chief executive, Jack Dorsey, this is undoubtedly just the start of a clash that will continue right up until the November election. In recent days, he has been under huge pressure to do something about President Trump's tweets. Now, he has acted but not in a way that might have been expected. There has been a furore over the way the president has used Twitter seemingly to endorse a baseless conspiracy theory about one of his critics, the TV presenter and former Republican Congressman Joe Scarborough. President Trump has repeatedly suggested the death in an accident, in 2001, of one of the Congressman's aides, Lori Klausutis, is a "cold case" that deserves to be reopened by the police. And that led the widower of Ms Klausutis to write to Jack Dorsey, pleading with him to remove the president's tweets because of the pain they were causing her family. So far, Mr Dorsey has refused, apparently convinced the president's Twitter feed has protected status because it is part of the public record. Nor was there any attempt to correct the inaccuracies in the tweets. Adding a fact-check to the tweets about mail-in ballots appears to fit in with a new Twitter policy on protecting elections. It warns users they may not post or share content that may interfere in elections or might suppress participation. Last night, another baseless conspiracy theory - this time about a made-up crime involving Donald Trump in 2000 - was posted by an account called TheTweetofGod. It too has neither been removed nor fact-checked, perhaps because Twitter realises it would be accused of inconsistency. The president's Facebook page also features his diatribes about mail-in ballots and Joe Scarborough, with no sign of any fact-checking or limits on sharing such material. But that's not to suggest it will escape his ire. Last week, the president tweeted: "The radical left is in total command and control of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Google." And he intended to "remedy this illegal situation". There have since been reports the White House might set up a special commission to investigate the claim. Whatever the social-media companies do about their most famous and controversial user is bound to cause anger on one side or another. They can look forward to a long hot summer.

To who it May concern, This is an open letter am writing,to all those who I tagged because of their strategic importance to this country.its on news recently, of how an African American was brutally murdered by a racist white American cop officer.while the world condemns this act, there is something we ought to learn from this.it proves the saying that the whites will always continue to see Africans as inferior until they raise up to the Challange and change their mentality.in Nigeria today, politicians see political positions as a means of enriching themselves, friends, family members and as a blessing from god.you see, there is a total decay accross all Nigerian critical sectors today.ranging from health, education, politics, development and progress.infact, the country had come to a standstill without any meaniful progress.corruption had killed everything and everything in Nigeria now had turned into politics, and tribal division propagated by politicians, to currently led the country into a state of quagmire.look at Somalia and Yemen,Nigeria may disintegrate into those situation due to greed and shadiness our politicians propagate.one thing is certain, there is no amount of lie, deception, that can cover the truth because the truth must always prevail.we have qualified educated youths, scientists and graduates, yet our Politicians give contract to Chinese and other whites who treat Africans as trash in their own country, but come to Nigeria to dictate and become VIPs contractors handling contracts for us nigerians.its a shame that since 1960,Nigeria government can't even construct quality roads for it's populace.all juicy road contracts goes to the whites.how many Nigerians had the chinese, Indians, polish,Americans invited to handle construction projects for them in their country.but reverse is the case in Nigeria because all our institutions, had been rendered incompetent, underequipped, and quota system takes over the norms, while the whites operate based on merits, nigeria is operating on tribalism and quota system.one thing is certain,no matter how we Nigerians asslick the whites we would always be seem as inferior and sub humans to them.you can't mess up your country and expect to be treated as a king in another man's land.in due time,u will always been placed in your rightful place. Majority of Nigerian teachers and lecturers, had sold their dignity and respect for a seed of peanut.these teachers/lecturers no longer follow the ethics of their work, but resort to collecting of bribes from students and engage in other corrupt acts.its a shame that in Nigeria today, pupils sitting for primary school certificate exams and JSSCE exams are been shown expo and they pass due to corrupt practices from the teachers.imagine these young lads exposed to corruption at such tender age,and you expect a better Nigeria in the future.have we not noticed a sharp decline in morals and values by our youths today,it because of what they are been exposed to at a young age.nigerian teachers and lecturers should leave a good legacy behind because tomorrow they might not be there to correct their mistakes. Nigerian lawyers are not excluded from the plaque currently ravaging Nigeria, they ought to be the most learned and rightful people to help alleviate Nigeria from the shackles of corruption but rather they helped pushed Nigeria deeper into the waters of corruption, today the rich usually go scott free from their crimes as long as they can pay the bail,we have lawyers that defend hardened criminals in court, just because of money today the Nigerian judiciary had become a shadow of it's self due to corruption from it's hiarachy down to the bottom.know wonder Nigeria judiciary can no longer be be last hope of the common man, because they allowed themselves to be used as pawns in hands of corrupt men.the saying goes, what goes around comes around.when you help install impunity and evil as an order of the day, don't cry when the same impunity and evil is melted out on you by the evil society and persons you helped to defend at one time or the other at the point of your life as a lawyer or judge. Nigerian police are another different case entirely, they no longer have respect for the uniform they wear, the lives of people they protect, and the ought of integrity they swore,on the day they joined the force.you see police men carrying out brazen conduct right in braid day light, and allow themselves to be used in perpetrating evil.to those evil hearted police men,I just want you to know that evil a man do no matter how small small lives with him and even after him after he had long died.one day the evil we committed would visit us or our generations, and someday everyone will give account to his maker. Thank you |
