Caveat: This is the longest Nairaland post you will ever read in your life. grin

We had our interview in Lagos. ....

......I was impressed by the quality of work put in by the VO. I believe she had a memorable time with us too because when I said, “Have a beautiful day”, she flashed her beautiful white thirty-two, then replied, “You too”.

All the best to everyone still anticipating, congrats to everyone celebrating. Apologies if I wore you out with my lengthy post. grin
I really enjoyed reading this...and I'm sure I'm not the only one who did!
Beautifully written, but even more so because of the beauty of honesty.

Congrats

semilore12:
sorry to bother you superdad...may i know why your MIL wasnt given an accommodation in Doha? I intend travelling with my mum and daughter through Qatar so trying to weigh my options. Thanks in advance
Hi @semilore12
MIL's ticket (bought based on when she got the visa- about a week prior to departure) was said to be a "promo" ticket despite being far more expensive than DW's ...and so her ticket didn't qualify her for accommodation.
TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 5 by SuperDad: 5:36am On Dec 04, 2017
Back to the purpose of this thread grin grin grin

In the spirit of giving back (Don't you just love that line)

DW (& MIL) flew Qatar @ 33 weeks + 4 days with Medif (Submitted via their email 5 days before and approval confirmed on phone), Port Health & Doctor's Report.

The Flight was smooth all through but no hotel accommodation was given MIL for the 9 hour stopover in Doha...so both DW & MIL paid 50 USD each to get access into the lounge to eat, rest and shower there.

Fast forward to the Atlanta
POE experience....(Visa was B1/B2 that DW obtained for a vacation last year which DW & I went for...she wasn't pregnant at the time, and this was clearly stated at her visa interview)

DW - Hello...Good afternoon (handed over her passport as well as her mum's)

CBP - How are you today? Travelling together with your sister?

DW - No, she's my mum...

CBP - Really? She doesn't look old enough to be your mum...

DW - (chuckling) She's over 60...

CBP - what do you have there? (he noticed she was carrying a clear file)

DW - I'm actually here for childbirth so I brought along my correspondence with my doctor, the hospital and the US embassy as well as payment receipt(we had paid the hospital bill online)

CBP - Let me have them... (she handed them over to him and he started perusing them and got to the point where he saw that the actual hospital bill was $14400 but that she was entitled to a 75% discount if we paid at once bringing my bill down to $3600...)
So how much exactly are you paying?

DW: $3600...since I made the payment at once, I got the discount...

CBP - is there any other payment yet to be made?

DW- yes, my doctors fee which is to be made at my first appointment is well as the payment for the labs and paediatrician...

CBP - How do you plan to pay those bills?

DW - I have cash with me as well as my cards

CBP - How much do you have with you?

DW - $ 9350

CBP - Got that right there with you?

DW - Yes (she immediately started making moves to bring out the cash from her handbag but he said she shouldn’t bother)

CBP- Where would you be staying?

DW - With my husband's uncle and his family...

CBP - So when is your due date?

DW - Dec. 20

CBP - Oh really?! My son was also due on Dec. 20 but came on the 15th...

DW - Wow... I won't mind that as well (she also desires 15th actually)

CBP - So how long are you staying?

DW - 3 months.. To return January ending

CBP - Really?! If I were you, I would stay much longer... (Trick Question? Who knows)

DW - I have to get back to work and my airline allows babies that young fly...

CBP - For me, it doesn't matter what the doctor, the airline or work says... I would stay as long as I want....
So I'm giving you till May just in case you want to stay longer (so he stamped her passport and gave her the usual 6months permit...he stamped same for her mum).

DW - Thank you so much though I won't be staying that long...

CBP - Do have a good day...

DW - You too... Thank you so much

Off to Agric
Her beans were put in some kind of sieve only for one miserable dead weevil to show up o...hence it was seized.
Kolanuts for a relation were allowed but every nut was cracked open o.
All others were allowed (Egusi, Dry Fish, Elubo etc lol - all labelled and in separate nylon packs)

DW & MIL are now chilling and counting down.

Praise God! ...and immeasurable thanks to all who have contributed to this platform, making it what it is.

@podada, I mean which airport do you plan to arrive (POE) in the US ...that can be a determinant for cheaper rates

What airport are you considering? Also many airlines have blocked out some dates for Promo fares around the festive season...departures before Dec 11 (or departures on Dec 25/26 Interstingly) should be relatively cheaper...

Hi @violetann
I'm pretty sure no one would respond to your request...not because they don't want to help...but because this is a DIY thread!
So type in "hospital newark" in the search space below, chose "travel" to streamline results, and note the findings (repeat same on Google too and note the findings)...then load an IDD package on your phone to make international calls cheaper and call the numbers respectively to confirm details yourself and begin a correspondence.
All the very best!

For whoever would need this info I stumbled upon, (especially mamas due between April & May 2018 and would perhaps be needing to travel from March and May 2018) , it seems there's a Virgin Atlantic deal to ATL for 420k now...

You are absolutely and 100% correct.
On arrival to one of their health centers, I was told that all their OBGYN are fully booked till January 2018.
I had my mouth opened and looked at my belly, because I know this baby is coming out way way before then.

Wow! That was some risk...but boldness too...and eventually protocol was broken for your sake smiley
Hope the costs aren't back-breaking though?
There'd be no issues...and ALL your needs would be supplied!!!

Hi @Ayotundesh
Wow...how did you pull off Grady? I called Grady a few months ago and we were told they officially stopped accepting international patients since Jan 27 this year o!
TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 5 by SuperDad: 1:11pm On Oct 31, 2017
Thanks for your reply daks01!
So does that mean you can actually get a Virgin Ticket with those long stopovers without necessarily having a UK visa (since you saw passengers who flew without UK visas) ? The info was communicated to me when I intended buying a ticket as a must!
Some of us dads may not mind those long stopovers for those commensurately ridiculously cheap deals when going to join DW o... cheesy

daks01:
Pls did you need a transit visa, flying Virgin Atlantic...and If you didn't, how long was your stopover pls?

Thanks superdad, as for virgin God is watching them! I didn't need a transit visa cos I have a valid uk visa although I didn't need it cos my layover was about three hours. But there were lots of people on my flight that had long layovers like 20hrs that were told in Naija when they were checking in that they'll be given transit visas and put in hotels when they get to Heathrow. Only for people to get there and those ones told them nope! The only thing they did was the ones that had valid uk visas were told to go out of the airport and sort themselves out, the ones that didn't were told to go stay at one lounge like that. I don't know how the lounge was tho but I don't think it could've been that comfortable for that long period, I really felt bad for them. There was even pregnant woman going to LA the following day, they told her the same thing. So that's my gist about virgin, don't fall for their bobo in Naija!
TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 5 by SuperDad: 6:44pm On Oct 29, 2017
Sorry to learn about your refusal ugoguchy!
As adviced by many here, Pls reapply and reapply ASAP!
You are on the side of truth & propriety...you did things properly, as best as you could.
From my 'small' experience, people with valid cases who were turned down mostly are given when they reapply ASAP...it seems to communicate some boldness & confidence as to the credence of your facts & circumstances at being deserving of a visa... #MyOpinion
VOs are human and like all humans, sometimes facts can be misunderstood, not-properly-read etc. A few pages back, someone was called for an interview after DropBox, only to be told she was called in erroneously.
Another VO, would be unwise not to more carefully review the facts at your reapplication.

Secondly, your husband has a valid visa. The strength of one's spouses travel history should also be a plus when reapplying...especially if you are planning to travel together at your planned trip .

Thirdly, the beauty of the truth is consistency of the facts. Don't fall to the temptation to "polish" a few facts based on suggestions here and there... Stick to your story, since it's true

Finally, maybe you should do Lagos.

Just did my follow up interview and was denied
Am here to actually rant, because i really dont know why i was been denied, when i got my visa in 2014 the VO asked what i was going to do in the US,we told her we were going for vacation that christmas, which we actually went for,she also asked me if i was pregnant and i told her yes,d next question was if i was going to have my baby in the US ,and i told yes i will and she gave a form with some medical stuffs on it,my visa expired and i applied through drop box and i was called for an interview, the VO asked my longest stay in d US i told her 3months,she asked what i was there for i told her i went to have my baby, she was like did i declare i was going to have my baby during my interview,i told her yes and even showed her d form i was given, she was like yes it shows here i saud i was pregnant but that it not written here that i will have the baby in US,i thought she was trying to pull my legs,i told her i cleared stated that during my last interview and she still insisted is not in her system, asked for my receipts,i gave her all even my zero balance, she typed and asked what i do,i told her, where my DH works i told her and she and gave me the pink form....am just trying to wrap my head around it because i was sincere right from the start and i have all my receipts and zero balance, please who elas has been on this situation should please help me here...we are suppose to go for vacation this Christmas,my hubby got his visa...when can i reapply

Hi guys! Like you say, in the spirit of giving back, just got into the USA and I had to to do this cos this journey won't have been possible without nairaland.
Had an existing visa I got before I got pregnant, hadn't used it so I sent change of intent and got the generic reply. My aunts and cousins here researched and researched cos I'm going to Colorado. We finally found a very affordable deal (will post the details later) Don't want to post any details here till I go there first.
So I flew virgin at 34wks 5dys, they accepted my fit to fly, flight was uneventful, landed at JFK by

Hi Ayob3.
As someone stated earlier, it depends on the doctor (and also the hospital the doctor has delivery privileges in...as some doctors accept but sometimes clearly state that their hospitals don't.)
Since your doctor has stated they accept, i'd advice the results are at least the typed kind...as results from most general hospitals in Nigeria (though valid here) are hand-written, which is unacceptable in many places around the world.

Ayob3:
Good day mama and paps, please which does the Doc in the US accepts (test and scan results from General or Private hosptial)

Wow... This is big revelation o. So you can actually get LO's ticket booked without passport details?!

For anyone else who's tried this or is knowledgeable about this...Does this mean (based on the premise of booking LO's ticket without passport details) that one can buy an adult and infant return ticket when DW is leaving (which is significantly cheaper than buying a one-way for LO alone upon return to Nigeria)...and simply add LO's details after birth, when it's time for the return? Is this possible?

If this doesn't contravene any rules/laws, this may be a viable solution for airlines that only allow purchases of (usually expensive) one-way ticket for infants on return o...

It'd be great to get mulitiple views & opinions on this potential 'lifehack' for airfares o...lol

cutieb:
Pls o I'm overwhelmed with baby care so might not be able to reply everyone...
For budget sheet send me an email.
For Qatar go to their website and click your location which is US and it will list the customer care no that you can call...I called and booked without LO's passport details...it's not needed..I paid with my GTB naija debit card which was done when I called..gave the CC agent my card details and I was debited and transit hotel reservation was also done on the spot..

For leaving 14 days...I didn't tell anyone because I didn't want anyone to bad mouth, discourage or gimme unnecessary advise.. what I needed was the airnfant is fit to fly which is 14days old and also paediatrician's check up that my LOs is healthy that's all...

Hi Veleta,
In my opinion, I think most people who choose Atlanta have family/ accommodation there, as Atlanta hospitals aren't the cheapest....(otherwise one might as well just save costs by going to a cheaper city/state with lower bills and then rent a place ).
For the above reason, I suspect you may not get too many recent reviews of tips, but here's my simple suggestion/advice- Use airbnb.com ...that may be your best bet!
I stand corrected.

veleta:
Please guys that have used hospitals in Atlanta, any tips for rented apartments. Your inputs would be highly appreciated. Thanks
TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 5 by SuperDad: 8:21pm On Aug 08, 2017
Mega thanks Davsquared! The one in Atlanta is closest for me, so I guess that helps cone options down. Did you have any challenges paying before hand from Nigeria or did you pay whilst there? (Considering paying from here before leaving)

davsquared:
I used Northside in Atlanta . D hospital big oo.. with massive structures. I however heard dat the Forsyth branch is new so I guess it would have newer facilities. It was closer to where I stayed but I didn't know till after I had put to birth.

I think d thing to consider when making the choice is its proximity to where you will b staying.

Thanks a lot!

Hi mymy2015,
In my opinion I think they already stand good chances based on the info you provided all other things being equal

1. Funds should be kept in account(s) where they are now. Bulk transfers into an empty account are not a good idea...especially when close to interview dates. It might set off an unintended red flag.

2. Husband not going serves as a tie of some sort, making it more likely for her to be given the visa in my opinion.

3. Other advice... Tell the truth only; regular things mentioned here- budget sheet, doctor's correspondence, presentation of a reasonable estimate (15-20k in my opinion), evidence of sufficient funds; Communicating confidently and not giving one-word answers etc...and expect grace & favour (I hope those are now acceptable words here o... Lol)

mymy2015:
Hello House, a colleague of mine needs some clarifications;

He is sponsoring his wife for child birth (who is currently not working) and has the funds for the trip in his account. Planned visa appointment for next Monday, his concerns are;

1) should the funds be transferred to her account (a new account)

2) Husband not going on the trip due to work constraints, is this gonna be problem considering she is yet to resume any work here

3) any other advise to him to increase their chances of visa approval?

Urgent response will be appreciated.
TravelRe: Give Birth In USA: Cost And Procedures Part 5 by SuperDad: 4:45pm On Aug 08, 2017
Na wa o! Seems the really really low cost 'county' hospitals are systematically taking out international patients...are we getting a trend here?
I hope it's just a policy tilt and not that we have gone to "show ourselves" there again o... Lol

That's nice to know. So I guess for people who want to get theirs done in the US, asking if it's the "Gomco Clamp" method may be fairly good guide. The method commonly used in Nigeria is "Plastibel". Who knows, they may just be same in principle with different names.
