Every element of economic backwardness regarding Nigeria's oil resource curse is thoroughly exposed in the article. Mismanagement - Management structure: cost of governance, red tape/bureaucracy, nepotism, lack of skills, knowledge and ethics. Corruption and bureaucracy - Incoherent decision-making skills, ignorance, power, politics and control. Lack of accountability and transparency, responsibility and legal guidelines governing conducts in public offices. Theft - Money laundering, embezzlement, deception and false accounting. Depletion of resources, thus ignoring long-term growth opportunities - Since all eyes have been on the oil industry in Nigeria, whatever resources available will continue to be channelled to the sector to maintain productivity. On the other hand, other industries and sectors (SMEs included) are consistently ignored due to a lack of resources. As long as oil is produced and the money keeps going in to feed such production, the oil industry remains cyclical. Since all eyes are on the money, idiots will continue to ignore the necessary requirements for growth and development - infrastructure, jobs, industries, etc. Economic consequences: Inflation - increase in prices due to excessive demand. FUNNY TO THINK WE HAVE OIL IN ABUNDANCE! Poverty - you know the deal. Unemployment - you know the deal. Diversion of resources - Errr.... IBORI! Socio-political tension - Need I say more? Public awareness has a dramatic effect on the mindset of the rulers - paranoia, disillusions and pressure may lead to more poor decision making, affecting long-term strategic decisions (IF EVER THERE WAS ONE IN NIGERIA) Lack of governance - The fact that the incumbent president, under whose nose these atrocities happened, has peeled back like a Caribbean banana and continued to watch shows a disregard for the national constitution. The fact that he is a puppet doesn't make things any better either. I COULD CONTINUE TO CRITIQUE THE GUY BUT I CAN'T BE BOTHERED. Legal Consequences - Well, the Nigerian legal system is a joke anyway. This only heaps more shame on it. I COULDN'T BE MORE CONVINCED BY THE ARTICLE,PARTICULARLY THE RECOMMENDATIONS. I JUST WANT TO SAY TO SOME FOOLS WHO ALWAYS JUMP ON BOARD AFTER ARTICLES REGARDING NIGERIA ARE PUBLISHED, CLAIMING FLAWS IN DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS. YOU HAVE TO KNOW THAT STATISTICIANS AND ANALYSTS ALWAYS ENDEAVOUR TO PROVIDE AS ACCURATE ANY PUBLICATIONS OR RESEARCH. IF YOU THINK THEY WAKE UP AND SUDDENLY DECIDE TO CONSTRUCT INFORMATION IN THEIR HEADS YOU MUST BE AN IGNORANT DREAMER. By the way, this is just one of the scams under Jonathan's administration. Revealedtv: Who knows maybe Jonathan is the worst president we have had. Nigeria should be treated as a business entity, not a country or state. Mismanagement by managers should be challenged. They need to be shaken up. Why create more states when the states we have are nothing to write home about? The names of the states alone are quite dodgy anyway. They should merge the businesses (states) together with different zones and departments. Obviously, they would need to cut costs and reduce the cost of governance itself. That way, there is a re-established management structure with each individual/department remaining responsible and accountable for their acts while working towards the organisational goals - in this case, bettering the merged states. With 36 businesses (states) spread around the country, we could consolidate the businesses, making them easier to manage. The businesses should not be dependent on the environment, rather, the environment depends on them. Once the states are merged and there are investments in infrastructure including good roads, electricity, communication, etc, then competition amongst local industries/sectors begins and there is a different type of environment. That way, domestic competition continues to exist and in the process, there is economic growth and development. Business policies addressing governance (code of conduct, ethics, legal issues, security, development... and the rest) should be imposed. In the states case, the lawmakers are deemed professional at all times, some rules should be followed to monitor behaviours and people owe an obligation to the business (state) to realise the business's goals. That way, there is a level of control, transparency, accountability, authority and a defined level of governance for the merged businesses (states). Each business (state) has the right to implement its policies according to the environment and its wishes to mould such environment to its advantage. They should be a two-tier governance level (STATE AND FEDERAL). SCRAP THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT STUFF! THAT DOES NOT HELP THINGS IN NIGERIA RIGHT NOW. THERE IS A NEED TO SHED THE "LOCAL GOVERNMENTS" BECAUSE THAT IS AN UNNECESSARY CHAIN OF COMMAND. THE STATE SHOULD BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE AFFAIRS OF THE LOCAL PEOPLE DIRECTLY AND IN COMMUNICATIVE WAYS. THE STATE SHOULD HAVE A CENTRALIZED DEPARTMENT FOR LOCAL AFFAIRS - NOT "LOCAL GOVERNMENTS". THERE DEFINITELY WOULD BE CONFLICTS OF INTEREST IF THERE ARE TOO MANY CAPTAINS ON ONE SHIP!!! Each business entity (state) reports to the Headquarters (Federal Government - the President and a FEW ADVISERS to make sound and logical decisions which should enhance the objectives of the businesses (states). There also should be a level of corporation between each business (state), regardless of the ethnicity, religion, sex, disability, age and values. There should be no room for discrimination. Everyone is working towards a common goal. As a business (state), it is essential to seek ways to be innovative and creative in order to remain competitive. Ideas should be shared amongst states. THIS INCLUDES PRACTISING GOOD EMPLOYEE RELATIONS, WELFARE, COMPETITIVE WAGES, CAREER DEVELOPMENT, HEALTHCARE INSURANCE, TRADE UNION MEMBERSHIP, FRINGE BENEFITS AND BLAH...BLAH. IN OTHER WORDS, FOR THE STATE, THIS TRANSLATES TO THE STATE PROVIDING BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS AND GOOD CITIZENS' WELFARE, THUS, BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS WHICH SHOULD BE THOROUGHLY OBSERVED AND IMPLEMENTED!!! The businesses should continue to provide job opportunities and benefits to several STAKEHOLDERS. That way, there is a win-win situation for both the business (profitability) and employees (job security, social benefits etc). This, to the states, translates to providing good governance, adhering to human rights and providing good standards of living for its citizens. UNTIL THESE POLITICIANS CONTINUE THEIR POLITICKING, IGNORING THE FACT THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL ISSUES PREVENTING GOOD GOVERNANCE OF NIGERIA, THEY WILL CONTINUE TO IGNORE THEIR SENSE OF LOGICAL THINKING WITH REGARDS TO MANAGING A BUSINESS ENTITY. YES, POLITICS AND BUSINESS ARE TWO DIFFERENT THINGS BUT POLITICIANS AND BUSINESSMEN ALWAYS AIM FOR THE AIM GOALS: GOOD GOVERNANCE(LAWS VS. BUSINESS CONDUCTS, SUSTAINABILITY (MAKING PROFITS VS MANAGING RESOURCES) AND LEGACY/REPUTATION (CUSTOMER LOYALTY VS. PERSONAL RECOGNITION). I have not lost faith in Nigeria. Rather, I have lost faith in its leaders and policy makers. Until these individuals are no more, I do not see any rehabilitative measures that could possibly restore an atom of faith in Nigeria and its citizens. I suppose the question should be, "Have you given up on Nigerian policy makers and politicians/rulers?". My answer to that would be a fat YES. But as for giving up on Nigeria, I haven't personally given up on Naija because I believe that, irrespective of our history of corruption, mismanagement and lack of integrity, if Nigeria is ruled by competent individuals with sound academic and practical understanding of governance, international affairs/relations, diplomacy, ethics, sustainability and society, there should be reasons to believe Nigeria will be one of the admirable countries in the world. Until then, I continue to hope that change will come to Nigeria. Momentarily, I have not given up on Nigeria. However, if events continue to unfold as they have been lately, I may just give you a different answer... |
