"Sunak says, ‘a man is a man and a woman is a woman’

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Oct. 4 that “we shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be.” (Video: Conservative Party)

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak asserted his stance on gender identity in a speech Wednesday, stating it was “common sense” that “a man is a man and a woman is a woman” — a remark that sparked criticism from transgender rights activists and elicited fervent applause from attendees of the Conservative Party Conference.

After promising to legislate that “sexual and sadistic” killers would spend their lives in prison, Sunak listed other positions he said “shouldn’t be controversial,” including “for parents to know what their children are being taught in school about relationships.”

“Patients should know when hospitals are talking about men or women,” Sunak continued during his closing speech at his party’s annual gathering, held this year in Manchester. “And we shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be. They can’t. A man is a man and a woman is a woman — that’s just common sense.”

In April, Sunak made headlines for agreeing with a conservative interviewer’s suggestion that all women — rather than 99 percent — “haven’t got a penis.”

He took a less strident tone at the time, stating that “we should always have compassion and understanding and tolerance for those who are thinking about their gender,” but that “the issue of biological sex is fundamentally important” to women’s rights and women’s spaces.

School is a ‘nightmare’ for trans and nonbinary kids. Here’s why.

In June, PinkNews, a British news outlet that covers the LGBTQ+ community, accused Sunak of mocking trans women as it published what it said was a secretly recorded video of the prime minister talking during a meeting with conservative MPs.

In the video, a man purported to be Sunak is heard joking that Liberal Democrats party leader Ed Davey “has been very busy” trying to “convince everybody that women clearly had joysticks.”

“You all know I’m a big fan of everybody studying maths at 18, but it turns out that we need to focus on biology,” the man in the video said.

A spokesperson for the prime minister defended those comments, saying it was “a joke aimed at a political opponent rather than a specific group.”

While gender identity is a hotly debated topic among politicians in Britain, a survey from Ipsos, published in June, found that most Britons think transgender people face discrimination. A 2022 survey of about 5,000 Britons from the think tank More In Common also found that 46 percent of respondents agreed with the statement that “a trans man is a man and a trans woman is a woman.” Less than a third said they disagreed.

After Sunak’s speech Wednesday, India Willoughby, a prominent transgender newsreader, accused the prime minister of “putting people in danger and inciting threats to their lives” in a video posted to the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

“We now have a British government and a prime minister that has said that it doesn’t recognize trans people,” Willoughby said. “If you don’t acknowledge a group of people exist, then obviously that group of people don’t have rights.”

More than 2,800 potential transgender hate crimes were reported between September 2001 and February 2022, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Service in Greater London. The number of reported incidents significantly increased starting in the mid-2010s, jumping from 75 incidents in 2013 to 428 in 2021."

No fewer than 90 schoolgirls in a Kenyan school have been reported ill after having difficulties walking, BBC reports Wednesday..

Kenyan health authorities say the health crisis is currently under investigation as the students have been admitted to hospital.

The female students from Eregi Girls High School, located in the western part of the country, were reported to also show symptoms of knee pain.

A regional director of education, Jared Obiero, said that “the education department, the county government and public health department are giving a commitment that the children will be treated.”

Earlier on Tuesday, a senior official from the country’s Ministry of Education who visited the school assured the worried parents that the situation was under control.

He said classes would continue as normal for other students.

It’s reported that blood, stool and urine samples of the sick students have been sent to laboratories in a neighbouring city in the nation’s capital, Nairobi.

It's better we end election in Nigeria, let everyone carry gun, whoever win in the gun battle should govern.

Guber poll: One killed, many injured as APC, SDP clash in Kogi

Supporters of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and All Progressive Congress (APC), on Friday, reportedly clashed during a campaign rally in Koton-Karfi area of Kogi.

It was reliably gathered that some of the supporters of the party attacked one another with dangerous weapons during the rally.

According to an eyewitness account, the governorship candidate of the SDP, Alhaji Murtala Yakubu Ajaka took his campaign rally to Koton-Karfi ahead of November 11 governorship election.

However, during the rally, crisis started when the supporters of the SDP and the APC allegedly attacked each other and destroyed vehicles and many people were also injured.

The Koton Karfe Peace initiatives have also condemned the shooting of a member of the All Progressives Congress in Koton Karfe.

A woman was reportedly killed during the campaign rally.

Meanwhile, Director Communications, Mr Faruk Adejo for Muritala Yakubu Ajaka Gubernatorial Campaign Organization, Social Democratic Party (SDP) in a statement issued alleged that Security personnel protecting The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Governorship Candidate in Kogi, Alhaji Muritala Yakubu Ajaka on Friday, successfully repelled gun attacks by political thugs in the State.

He mentioned that several supporters of Ajaka sustained bullet wounds after the attack, which occurred on his way from a rally to the town’s Central Mosque for his Jumat Prayers.

His words, “In continuation of his campaign of violence and intimidation thugs had earlier opened fire at the rally venue at about 10:30 am when supporters began gathering ahead of Ajaka’s arrival to flag off the event at 1:00 pm.

“The rally was already underway when thugs with sophisticated assault Rifles arrived and started shooting sporadically.

“Party supporters scampered in different directions while the fiery thugs descended on the event equipment namely podium, canopies, chairs, Public Address Systems.

“They fired bullets into the giant speakers, smashed several hundreds of chairs and canopies, and then sustained the gun fire for over 15 minutes,” he said.

Ajaka, who arrived at the venue about 2 hours later, praised supporters and party faithful who bravely returned to the venue despite the attack on hearing the approach of his siren.

He condemned the attack and urged the supporters not to be intimidated.

He mentioned that it was while leaving the rally venue with supporters escorting his motorcade to Jumat Prayers that they ran into a barricade on the road.

He disclosed further that the Murtala Yakubu Ajaka Gubernatorial Campaign Organisation has formally reported the attack to the Kogi office of DSS and the State Police Command.

In a swift reaction, the Coordinator of the Koton Karfe Peace initiatives, Iliyasu Jato while speaking on the issue said a lady whose name is still unknown, was in an APC programme when the thugs allegedly shot her.

“Today’s action is glaring.

“Until we begin to go after the aggressors and those causing violence, we may be chasing shadows.

“I call on the security agencies to fish out those who caused today’s attack.

“Is this how they want to come and govern the State? We expected them to come with superior campaign promises, but this is not the case,” he stated.

Iliyasu called on the security agencies to beam their searchlight in the direction of the incessant attacks in the State.

Whereas I am a supporter Alex Otti, and I'm a proud son of Igboland, but I'm skeptical about this Owaza Seaport Ish.

I am begging for answers to the following questions;

-When was the Feasibility study commissioned by Gov. Otti?.

- Which company did the Feasibility study, and the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)?.

- What's the financing arrangement?. Is Abia bouyant enough to undertake such capital project, or is it PPP arrangement?. If PPP, who are the partners?.

- How Navigable is the Owaza port, Azumiri is pretty navigable, nobody know much about this Owaza.

- He said he's flagging off of the project tomorrow, does it mean that both the Feasibility study and the EIA has been done and dusted, and has the federal government given her approval because we know that Port Operations is the business of the federal government.

I come in peace men and brethren, I'm just asking relevant questions that pricked my heart.

Illegal Mining: Environmental Disaster Inevitable – Enugu Commissioner

*... as gov't taskforce seals illegal mining sites at Nsude, Akwuke

*…residents, communities kick, call for prosecution

The Enugu State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Prof. Sam Ugwu, has lamented the extensive damage illegal coal miners had done to the environment in the state.

The Commissioner, who is the Chairman of the Committee on Review of Mining Activities in Enugu State, disclosed this while carrying out environmental assessment and enforcement of the state order sealing the sites of the illegal mining activities at Nsude and Akwuke communities, both in Udi and Enugu South Local Government Areas, respectively.

Leading a team of experts alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Energy and Mineral Resources, Mr. Kingsley Nnaji, the Commissioner said the illegal deforestation, diversion of water bodies and degradation of hundreds of hectares of land by the miners could trigger ecological disaster if nothing was done to prevent further unregulated mining activities in the state.

According to him, “It is unfortunate that this kind of damage is going on in Enugu State without the approval of the Enugu State Government. It is very very sad. The government is not happy about it, and we will continue this way till we close all the mining sites in Enugu State. It has caused a lot of ecological damage.

“It will take many years for Enugu State to recover from this humongous damage on our environment.

“We are really worried about what is going on, and we are sealing them. These criminal acts are unacceptable. There will be no more activities here. We will be monitoring them morning and evening and ensure the places we have sealed are not tampered.”

However, Prof. Ugwu, while serving a letter of invitation on the miners, said those with genuine mining licences, approvals and other evidence of compliance with the standard practice should visit the State Government for verification.

He further called on genuine investors who are willing to invest in the energy and minerals sector of the economy to approach the state through the laid down process, maintaining that the government was interested in making the state attractive for investors by derisking investment flow.

Meanwhile, residents and communities across the state have continued to protest against the activities of the illegal miners, saying that the miners had been threatening them with security agencies and unlawful arrests by operatives illegally attached to protect them at the various sites.

They called for the arrest and prosecution of those destroying the environment, insisting that the miners had no stake in the state as most of them were not from the state even as the coal was being transported outside Enugu State for industrial use and export purposes.

An environmental expert in the state, Engr. Amara Victor, said the mining activities should be taken as a time-bomb that would trigger ecological and environmental catastrophe if the state government did take decisive steps to enforce the closure of those sites.

Engr. Raphael Edeh, a soil and environment impact assessor, who had been following the trends of the illegal mining activities, called on the government to go after the culprits destroying the state and the insiders colluding with them, adding that the state could soon experience landslides and earthquake if no proactive measure was taken.

He said the environment in certain communities were presently contaminated such that farming activities and water could no longer be safe for drinking as the miners had already destroyed their sources.

At the mining sites at Nsude and Akwuke were a number of heavy-duty trucks, excavators, caterpillars, coal-loaded trailers, among other machinery used for the illegal mining activities.
