Nelton: Nigerian businessmen whose businesses were looted and plundered were also law abiding citizens doing business in South Africa so pleaseee. While I do not support a reprisal attack because of course we are not animals like the south Africans, there is a need to send out a strong earning to the south African people that we allow their businesses to survive and thrieve should not be taken for granted, even when we know that they have over the years exploited our simplicity and hospitality by paying us back with outrageous tariffs, under paying our citizens working for them and so many other things. Yet this has not promoted us to act the way they are acting. h MTN Nigeria is almost like a Nigerian business. 99 percent of MTN staff are Nigerians so whats the point? |

It is not as easy as you're making it sound, MTN Nigeria won't just leave their businesses at no cost for another company to take over. Besides, it was Nigerians that brought MTN to Nigeria. |

blakky97: if there was a nigerian telecommunication company in s.a; by now it would have been reduced to its trellises. im not supporting that any violent action be taken? but it takes someone who did not see any picture or video of the killings and maiming that the so called xenophobia brought in its wake; to take such a firm standing against boycott as a form of protest. this is a struggle to force the s.a government into taking an action that can at east pacify the people who lost their loved ones in the attack. besides, the statement of this Goodluck of a person sounds more of a threat than a solidarity speech to me. he only forgot to add that our darling mtn; employer of 2 million nigerians; saver of the Nigerian economy from crashing, can be nationalised and made to function in the same capacity without anybody necessarily been thrown on the streets. My Friend, MTN is not the south african government. If you want to protest, go to the south african embassy and protest not MTN offices. |

cap28: MTN are only concerned about their profit margin they couldn't care less iif 1 million Nigerians are lynched in their country, first of all the owners of MTN are white and as you well know whites do not give a shi.t about black African lives therefore we need to make it clear to them that we will no longer continue to be treated as passive, docile slaves. Hit them where it hurts by boycotting their services because in doing so yhou will be speaking to them in the only language that they understand - the language of money and power.
This is our chance to make them understand that we are not the fools that they think we are.
Just let this boycott get underway and you will see how quickly their govt will move into action. The last thing Zuma and his cronies want is for white owned businesses like MTN to withdraw their support for his corrupt regime. Dude, you don't live in Nigeria and you won't be affected by the economic consequences of your demands. That's all I can say. |

Lest I forgot, corruption should attract death sentence. I know pro-jona won't like this as they already begging for Ibori's release. They will come here and say everyone is corrupt, so we should fold our hands. Hate it or love it, Nigeria is a dirt poor country when we compare ourselves with more advanced countries. Yes, the money we spend on running government should be reduced but even that, we are still poor. Heck, even if we stop financial corruption in Nigeria, we will still not be rich enough to cater for the needs of 170 million people. |

cap28: MTN are slave drivers who are using you as cheap labour, you can see from their press releases that they don't even feel the need to speak to you in a respectful manner. No iota of respect. Think about it, they are in your country and listen to the tone they use to speak to you, warning you as if you were the one that started the problem. YOu need to show them who is boss and send out a very clear message so that they understand that you are no fool, let them go to hell with their pitiful slave labour wages, Do you know that Nigerians are the largest number of subscribers on the whole continent? They should be doing everything possible to pacify you not threatening you as if they hold all the aces. Call their bluff and kick them to the kerb and lets see who will be crying at the end of it all. MTN and other south african companies have condemned the events occurring in their country, I see no reason why we should cry more than the bereaved. Nigerian and Indian companies pay worse than MTN. Also, MTN makes a lot of money from Nigeria because of their highly effective business model. There's no point in showing them who's boss or whatever, that unreasonable and it should only happen on events that were caused by MTN. |

Don't waste Niger Delta money on a such a futile venture. What happened to the economic diversification your party promised? Also, you must have heard that Boko Haram now has the backing of the wealthy ISIS and other terrorist groups. You have a bigger problem than you've imagined. Finally, you should endeavor to tell your people to go to school and get an education. Every economic plan you have for them will be worthless if they can't read or write. Thank you. |

He who has ears. Irate Nigerians that are calling for the closure of MTN should understand the consequences. MTN is a law abiding company doing in business in Nigeria, the events occurring in their originating country shouldn't be used as an excuse to promote further divisions between the countries. They're a major stakeholder in the Nigerian economy and we should give them the respect they deserve. We should boycott Shell and other IOCs that degrade our environments with their business operations. Besides, its hypocrisy that a country like ours with a rich history of human rights abuses would seek revenge over acts human rights abuses in another country. |

SkyBlue1: Nigerians think Nigeria is a rich country because they are ignorant. We are only rich in potential but in reality quite poor, some meagre cash with no assets (infrastructure) and a lot of liabilities. And having that in mind only makes the profligacy and corruption of past governments even more unforgivable. May 29th can't come fast enough. The obiagelli thread made me start this thread and believe me when I say that most Nigerians think like this. They simply multiply the price of crude oil by the amount of barrels exported and believe that's what we earn. They also believe that this money earned will turn Nigeria to Dubai in three years. This level of ignorance is destructive. |
Politics › Re: Why Do Nigerians Think That Nigeria Is A Rich Country? by Sweetguy25(op): 6:41pm On Apr 20, 2015 |
goofyone: I kinda agree with your post. But you'd be surprised Nigeria actually earns much more than that or at least should be earning much more than that. Since the whole bulk of the country's earnings go to recurrent expenditure, it's actually very hard to sustain development. It's like when you earn, say, 1.2 million per month and then you have to give 3/4 of that to siblings and friends, of course the remainder 1/4 will be hardly sufficient to run a home. Get it?
In addition, there's a lot of sabotage in the Nigerian system. There's bunkering, there's tampering with infrastructure and all sorts. All these set back any administration and unwarranted expenses are incurred Further cutting down money available for national development.
You see? I quite agree with you. Though i support Buhari to effect some changes, but if there isn't a radical alteration to the culture of spending in Nigeria, there's very little he'll be able to do to turn the nation around. Nigeria earns more than that in reality and that's if I tax and other IGR which amounts to about 2 trillion naira. This is still too small to properly take care of security in Nigeria. Even if we cut down on expenses and block loopholes, the money left will still be unable to take of our pressing needs. |

Seriously, its annoying. We should all face reality and acknowledge that we are poor. We are one of the poorest countries in the world.
We should not be carried away by reports that Nigeria makes 70 billion dollars a year from crude oil. 70 billion dollars is chicken change for 170 million people. 70 billion dollars is not enough for Lagos state; 70 billion dollars in not enough to fix the rot in our education sector; 70 billion dollars is not enough to give us that level of infrastructure we see in the developed world.
Nigeria needs to be earning revenues of about 300 billion dollars annually in order for any serious development to take place. There's no hope in sight that this will achievable in the next ten years.
To make matters worse, the way the money Nigeria earns is shared makes it very difficult for Nigeria to develop or for the money be used to achieve anything meaningful. As long as all that Nigeria does is get money from crude oil and share the money among all the state and local governments, then we are wasting our time. We have been trying that for the past sixteen years and nothing has changed. We should try something new
The truth is that we are decades away from development and the farther you neglect your education, infrastructure and economy, the harder and more costly they get in order to fix.
We failed to fix these problems in the early days when they were easier to fix, we have to live with the brunt of our failures and mistakes.
I wish Buhari well but I doubt if he can do much or create any impact. |
Politics › Re: Barcanista, Buhari's Social Program; More Of A Possibility by Sweetguy25: 4:35pm On Apr 20, 2015*. Modified: 5:03pm On Apr 20, 2015 |
Its not possible and its silly.
First of all 5000 naira monthly with the current inflation rate and exchange rates makes no sense. It wont lift anyone out of poverty. Aside the economic costs, the logistics, arrangement and management burdens will be entirely overwhelming that at the end of the day, not more than 1 million people would be able to access the funds. Nigeria won't be able to afford any social security programs in the next five years.
On the school feeding, I believe that the program won't be available to states with low poverty rates and high literacy rates. They won't need such a program in anambra, imo state or abia state. That will be their saving grace.
The only feasible way the federal government can raise the finance as fast as possible is if they sell their stakes in the various energy projects around the country. They would realise about 60 billion dollars instantly and they should ensure that the PIB is passed. If this is added to royalties and taxes, then the government can realize about 90 billion dollars by the end of the fiscal year in 2016. Even at that, the money is still too small.
And please Nigerians should understand that Nigeria is a poor country. Don't be fooled when you hear 90 billion dollars or 50 billion and then you think the money is enough to go round and solve all our problems. The budget of the Lagos state government alone should not be less than 5 trillion naira annually if we want to be serious about infrastructural and socioeconomic development. The federal government budget of 4 trillion naira is not even enough to take care of all the federal universities in Nigeria talk much about taking care of the needs of 170 million people.
Nigerians ought to know about our problems better than we currently do. |
