https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeCqnX2lPnM ''It was hell'' Peter Okoye shares his experience after himself, his wife and daughter tested positive for COVID19 Singer, Peter Okoye, this afternoon revealed himself, his wife Lola and their daughter Aliona, tested positive for the novel Coronavirus. In a video he posted online, Peter said he was the one who first tested positive with the virus. ''For the past three weeks, I have been ill and most people didn't even know what was wrong with me. I kept it to myself. It has been three weeks of hell for me and my family. I had COVID19 for about three weeks and it happened to me. I was sick and I tested positive. The reason why I came out to say it is because I am going to encourage a lot of people concerning this whole social distancing, getting used to sanitizing your hands, disinfecting your environment, wearing your face mask and all that. It's been hell for this family in this house. Not just me. Even two of my domestic staff. After a week, my daughter caught the virus as well. It was sad that when she caught it, the doctor insisted that she has to be self isolated in her own room but my wife did something very courageous. She said no. I was sick and I was being self-isolated in my guest room. I couldn't even see my sick daughter and I was feeling so bad. I felt so bad because I felt that I am the one who actually brought the virus to the house. It was so bad that I had to be calling her on video, checking on her. The next day, my wife did someting very courageous. She picked our daughter from her room, held her and took her to the master bedroom and she called me and she started crying. I asked her what happened and she said I cannot live this girl alone. I would rather be infected and be with her. Five or six days later, my daughter was pronounced negative. When she was pronounced negative, we knew it wasn't going to end there. The next day, Lola became positive. It has been hell but we had a bad experience. I just want to tell everybody that this COVID19 is real. Don't take it for granted. I am happy to announce that my wife, myself, our daughter and two of our domestic staff all of us are now negative''he said

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5eaqi5SZ8LU Police on Wednesday in Abuja has arrested and paraded three female suspects for a failed attempt to move 818 rounds of live ammunition from Kano State to Yenagoa in Bayelsa State. The suspects along with 36 others were paraded before newsmen by the Force Public Relations Officer, FPRO, Frank Mba, a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), for alleged offences ranging from kidnapping, cattle-rustling to gunrunning amongst others. According to him, the suspected owner of the ammunitions, one Yower, who is currently being detained by the military, had concealed the consignment inside a half bag of rice and instructed one the suspects, his wife, Elena Yower, to take it to the motor park in Kano to be delivered to another suspect, Favour Bello in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. He said that on getting to the motor park, the motor boys complained that the half bag of rice was rather too heavy and became suspicious which made them open it and discover the ammunitions. The FPRO appealed to the members of the public to always cross-check any parcel or load being given to them for delivery so as not to fall victim of any eventuality. Narrating her role in the incident, Mrs Elena Yower said that of her husband of seven years instructed her via telephone to take the half bag of rice to the motor park for onward delivery to one Miss Favour Bello in faraway Yenagoa in Bayelsa State, and that she had no knowledge of the contents of the bag rather than it was half a bag of rice her husband told her. Mrs Yower described her husband as a gentleman who might have been influenced by his friends in their desire to acquire material things in a hurry and she insisted that she only carried out her husband’s instructions. She said that she only got to know that the ammunitions were concealed inside the half bag of rice when the military police came to arrest her and detained for one week before being moved to Abuja for further investigation. In her confession to the press, Favour Bello confirmed that she was actually expecting the parcel from Kano having been duly briefed by Yower who is now being detained by military authorities over the incident. In a related development, the Police also paraded a 29-year-old suspect, a father, who specialises in robbing car hire service operators of their vehicles at gunpoint after giving them poisoned edible things or soft drinks. The suspect who identified himself as Moses and an artist said that he was in the business to raise money to purchase his instruments. He said he has stolen several vehicles after he was released from prison recently. Moses said that the stolen vehicles were sold off at giveaway prices, explaining for instance that a Golf car was sold for ₦80,000. Speaking on this development, the FPRO warned car hire service operators not to take any edible thing from passengers in whatever any guise. Also, another suspect who specialises in stealing of motorcycles was also paraded. The suspect who claimed to be a motorcycle rider confirmed to have stolen close to 40 motorcycles, and that each was sold at ₦60,000. The exhibits recovered from the suspects include seven AK-47 rifles, three pump action guns and other weapons. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGV0ZLq1Mrs The Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Union Pensioners (NUP) on Tuesday took to the streets of Owerri to protest four months in unpaid arrears of pensions owed them by the state government. The protest a heavy gridlock on the roads leading to Government House as the protesters chanted and called out Governor Hope Uzodimma to address them. Speaking at the protest in front of the entrance of the government house, Iyke Ohaneje, Chairman, Pension Intervention Committee, of the Imo State chapter of the NUP, expressed the pensioners’ displeasure over the unpaid arrears. ‘We are here because of the four months pension owed us by the state government. We are not happy and can’t continue to be patient while we suffer in silence,’ Ohaneje said. The Imo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has, however, disassociated itself from the demonstration. In a statement press statement by the state chairman, Austin Chilakpu, in Owerri, maintained that NLC has been dialoguing with the state government on the pension matter, adding that it is also aware of the fact that there were still a number of contentious entries on the pension payroll which, according to the NLC, the government is sorting out to ensure a comprehensive and clean pensioners’ list. He also said that the government has assured organised labour that all outstanding pensions will be paid soon. Chilakpu said that the NLC will soon address the public on the rot in the pension scheme, just as he appealed to the pensioners to exercise a little patience, saying that he is confident that the issues will soon be resolved and the outstanding pensions paid. He, however, emphasised that the Union was not in support of the protests because the pensioners may unwittingly make themselves vulnerable to infiltration by those who do not mean well for them, adding that the protesters did not receive approval from either the NLC or the police to embark on their action. Meanwhile, Governor Hope Uzodimma has assured the pensioners that their outstanding payments will be settled on Friday. While apologising for the delay in payment of the pension arrears, the governor explained that his administration met a lot of anomalies in the mode of payment used by the previous administrations. Governor Uzodimma, who addressed the pensioners through the Secretary to the State Government, Cosmas Iwu, stated: ‘A lot of things were not right when we came. We have been trying to make sure we do the right thing by sorting out the service ones from those no longer in the system but were still receiving their pension. Please, be patient. We are going to pay between now and Friday.’ Source: https://www.sunnewsonline.com/imo-pensioners-protest-unpaid-arrears-governor-vows-to-pay-friday/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmi_UqTRWbY The Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday, fixed June 30 to deliver judgment in the suit filed by Dino Melaye challenging the passage of the Infectious Diseases Bill Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu fixed the date after taking arguments from parties in the case. The bill, which is sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila and two other lawmakers – Pascal Obi and Tanko Sununu- seeks to empower the Federal Government to convert any property in the country, including private property, to isolation centres. The bill also seeks to empower the government to, upon mere suspicion that a person is infected with an infectious disease, arrest and detain the person for as long as necessary, among others. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Melaye had, on May 5, claimed that the provisions of the Bill violate his fundamental rights, among which are rights to the dignity of person, personal liberty, right to private and family life, right to freedom of movement and right to own immovable property in Nigeria. While the clerk of the National Assembly is the 1st respondent, the Clerk of the House of Representatives, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Attorney General of the Federal (AGF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) are 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th respondents respectively in the suit. Justice Ojukwu had, on June 1, adjourned the matter until June 15 while advising parties to restrain themselves from actions that could jeopardise the suit. Earlier, Counsel to Melaye, Nkem Okoro told the court that the matter was for continuation of hearing. Okoro urged the court to grant all the reliefs sought by his client in the application. However, Kayode Ajulo, Counsel to the Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; lawyer to the AGF, M.L. Shiru and Kehinde Oluwole, who represented IGP, urged the court to strike out the matter for lack of merit. They argued that a bill, which was yet to become a law, could not have infringed on the plaintiff’s fundamental rights. In her argument, Shiru, who represented the AGF, stated that the country’s constitution provided for separation of powers among the three organs of government. “And in explaining this doctrine of separation of powers my lord, we refer the honourable court to the case of AGF and Guardian Newspapers. The citation are supplied in our preliminary objection my lord,” she said. According to her, in view of the principle of separation of powers as applicable, we are quite aware that the honourable court can interfere in legislative processes when there is only a defiance from the provisions of the constitution. “However, this power can only be exercised in respect of enacted laws and not legislative bills and we urge your lordship to uphold our submissions in the preliminary objection and decline to grant the reliefs of the applicant,” she remarked. She stressed that the National Assembly had the powers to make and amend laws as provided by the constitution. The lawyer said although Melaye had laid emphasises on Sections 6, 29, 30 and 47 of the proposed bill, she urged the court to “dismiss all the reliefs sought by the applicant on the provisions of the bill as vexatious and annoying.” According to her, the application falls short of fundamental rights application. “The applicant has not proved that the bill infringe on his fundamental rights. “A bill is not a law yet and if it is not a law, how can it infringe on his right. “Therefore, application of the applicant should be discountenance by the court,” Shiru said. The lawyer asked the court to also award a cost against the applicant (Melaye) for bringing such application before the court. The bill which has scaled second reading seeks to establish the Erosion Control and Prevention Commission. Sponsor of the bill, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (YPP – Anambra South) in his lead debate on the bill, said the establishment of a commission for the purpose of erosion control and prevention had become imperative in view of the catastrophic impact of erosion in several parts of the country. |

Lawan stated this in the speech he delivered to his colleagues to mark the beginning of the 9th Senate’s second legislative year, which began on Thursday. He said, “In order to support and enable the government to raise the necessary funds for national development, there were requests for approval to borrow, both from the domestic and foreign sources. “We have approved foreign loans of about $28bn in the last one year. “We had ensured proper scrutiny for the desired projects and programmes of government, the conditions of the facilities before approving such borrowing requests. “The task ahead of us is to ensure tracking, monitoring and supervision of how the loans are applied. “We must ensure that the target projects remain, and that there is value for money also.” Lawan said the current experience of low revenues to government was a challenge to the lawmakers to think and evolve additional sources of funding government projects. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8l-i-RhgBzE President Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the Osinbajo led-Economic Sustainability Committee, saying he has accepted it as a “National Plan”. He said his administration was committed to implementing the recommendations in reference to Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s appeal to Buhari to implement the report and not allow it to gather dust on the shelf. Buhari said Federal Government support for local production, manufacturing, significant support for the informal sector and MSMEs and the expansion of the Social Investment Programme to provide succour to more Nigerians among others would be implemented. “I’m pleased to hear that the Economic Sustainability Committee consulted with all the National Economic Councils and the National Assembly, and I look forward to our continued partnership with one focus to implement what I consider a national plan,” the President said. While congratulating the Osinbajo-led Committee for completing this critical national assignment in good time, Presicent Buhari said the focus of the plan would help stimulate the economy and create millions of jobs especially for youths through massive programmes in the agriculture and agro-allied sectors and other sectors of the economy. Buhari spoke at the Council Chambers when he received the ESC’s plan entitled “Bouncing Back: The Nigerian Economic Sustainability Plan.” He said the committee was established because “during these uncertain times, the government saw the need to act quickly and avert the worst; while government continues to seek ways of supporting businesses and industry. Buhari said the administration was determined “to support business especially sectors facing difficulty as the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resultant socio-economic lockdown”, while it focuses on implementing the recommendations of the national plan. According to him, the recommendations will help in developing a truly competitive economy that can support the people and secure the future. “I congratulate the Economic Sustainability Committee for completing this critical national assignment in good time.” He also commended Nigerians for their resilience in adapting to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the efforts of health workers whom he said, “continue to play critical role in keeping our country safe.” Earlier, the Vice-President said the Committee was motivated by President Buhari’s “directive to come up with a plan that would to provide succour to Nigerians, taking into account the dangers posed to the economy by the global economic slowdown, which also resulted in a drastic fall in crude oil production and prices, with serious implications for government revenues and foreign exchange earnings.” “We are confident that if the proposals are taken as a whole and implemented conscientiously, Nigeria will avert the worst of the impending economic headwinds, and covert this crisis to a victory for the Nigerian economy.” The President had appointed his deputy to chair the committee to develop a clear Economic Sustainability Plan in response to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. To prosecute the assignment, Osinbajo had chaired several meetings with members of the Committee, National Assembly leadership, State Governors, the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (EAC), among others. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QiL-cEOSIZ0 ‘Boko Haram has metamorphosed from a group of religious zealots into an industry’ —Senate President Ahmed Lawan ABUJA – PRESIDENT of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, having taken a cursory look at the modus operandi and actions of the Boko Haram, said on Thursday that the group has stopped being a religious sect and has now become merchandized as a big industry. Speaking in Abuja, Lawan said that Boko Haram now consists of people from different religions and from different countries. The President of the Senate spoke after the presentation of a motion on the resurgence of killings in Borno North by Boko Haram insurgents. The motion was sponsored by Senator Abubakar Kyari, All Progressives Congress, APC, Borno North and Co-sponsored by Senators Kashim Shettima, APC – Borno Central and Ali Ndume, APC Borno South. Meanwhile, the Senate has resolved that Ahmad Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, will meet with President Buhari to discuss security challenges arising from the activities of Boko Haram insurgents and bandits in parts of the country. Lawan in his remarks said, “Boko Haram has metamorphosed from a group of religious zealots into an industry. It is an industry because what they do is not religious. They have people from different faiths and countries who are part of Boko Haram. Lawan who lamented how the activities of Boko Haram had persisted despite so many resolutions and efforts by the Senate to stop them, said, “This senate passed so many resolutions including the reports of the various ad-hoc committees we set up, senator Kabiru Gaya once headed a committee on insecurity and he toured many parts of the northwest then I also chaired another committee with public hearing and everything with all the service chiefs were invited but it has persisted. “I don’t want to say meeting the President is something that we have to reveal if we do, but of course it is natural that issues like this will be of interest for us to discuss with the President, and we have been doing that. “What is necessary is for us to persist. Our Armed Forces have their challenges, and therefore, we will continue to look at those challenges and try to address them. “However, where anybody is found wanting, our stand should be that people should occupy offices based on their performance. “There’s no point if somebody is not registering successes for such person to continue to be there, but that is if you give that person the necessary tools to fight. So, we should give them the necessary tools and then we hold them accountable. “We will do that in addition to of course meeting Mr. President, it is not going to be the Senate President, I’ll make sure that I have my colleague in the House of Representatives because this is a national question.” Earlier, Kyari while relying on order 42 and 52 of the Senate standing rules, lamented the killing of ninety persons which included women and children on Tuesday 9th June, 2020, by Boko Haram insurgents following an attack on Foduma Kolum village of Gubio Local Government. The lawmaker who further bemoaned the resurgence of what he described as “senseless killings” by the insurgents in recent weeks, said seventeen people were killed in Gajiagana, Magimeri local government on 17th May, 2020; and another thirty-three persons killed in Nganzai local government on 22nd May, 2020. According to him, “these attacks are becoming very worrisome in view of the fact that the Nigerian Armed Forces recently started recording successes in the fight against insurgency.” Kyari raised alarm that, “these attacks which have led to the massacre of hundreds of people, also includes other Winona acts such as cattle rustling, kidnapping, abduction and forceful displacement of people from their ancestral communities.” He further expressed concern that “with the coming of the rains and farming season, the land is terribly insecure with marauding insurgents at bay. The consequences of food shortage can better be imagined.” In his contribution, former Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume (APC – Borno South) who lamented the inability of the Armed Forces to completely cripple insurgent activities in the North-East, however, called on the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, and his counterpart in the House of Representatives to meet with President Buhari to discuss the spate of insecurity in northern Nigeria. Senator Ndume said “We have been doing this for the past eleven years that is since 2009 when this started. In 2015, we had some kind of relief when this government took over. But it is not over until it is completely over. “The problem is not restricted to the North East. We have banditry re-insurging every time and increasing; we have issues of banditry and herdsmen conflict in the North Central and other security challenges. “What I will suggest is that Mr president you have to step a step further. It is not just this motion, I think you need to see the President and talk one on one on this issue.” Accordingly, the Senate urged the Federal Government to direct, as a matter of urgency, the Nigerian Armed Forces and relevant security agencies to beef up personnel and equipment deployment to critical areas especially in and around the Lake Chad shores in order to flush out the insurgents. The Upper chamber has called on the Federal Government to direct the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to immediately send relief materials to the victims of these attacks. The Senate also urged the Federal Government to immediately begin the implementation of the recommendations of the “Report of the Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Nigeria Security Challenges: Need to Restructure, Review, and are-Organize the Current Security Architecture” as way of addressing the nations current security challenges. The Senate observed a one-minute silence in honour of those who lost their lives in the attacks by insurgents. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Bo3Md73Hvs 280 ex-terrorists reintegrated to their communities, 603 others to graduate July – DHQ The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that it has successfully reintegrated 280 ex-Boko Haram terrorists, including 2 Chadians, back into society through their respective national and state authorities. Director, Defence Media Organisation, Major General John Enenche, who made this known at a media briefing, said Operation Safe Corridor, established in 2016, has admitted a total of 893 ex-Boko Haram fighters. He said a total of 603 undergoing a De-radicalization, Rehabilitation and Re-Integration (DRR) Programme and would be graduating by July. Gen Enenche, while noting that Deradicalization is the first stage of the programme after a medical screening, including taking of DNA sample, is conducted, listed other processes before admitting the candidates into the training to include psychotherapy, psycho-spiritual counseling, drug abuse intervention, art therapy, sports/recreation and introduction to western education to counter the BHT ideology. He described the operation as a success story, saying feedbacks from those reintegrated are positive. He specifically pointed to a particular case in Bama, Borno State, where an ex-fighter who learnt to barb as a vocation has successfully empowered 4 locals and is happily married with children. Gen Enenche used the opportunity to give an update on operation safe corridor. ‘The concept of Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC) is that of a unique non-kinetic operation aimed at giving hope to ex-combatants who willingly give up their arms to embrace peace. It is a Defence Headquarters (DHQ)-led multi-agency humanitarian effort based on De-radicalization, Rehabilitation and Re-Integration (DRR) of ex-combatant Boko Haram members that willingly surrender, which was established in September 2015 and became operational in 2016. ‘Operation SAFE CORRIDOR (OPSC) is guided by among other provisions such as International Humanitarian and Human Rights Laws. It is being administered by 468 staff drawn from 17 organizations including the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN), Law Enforcement and Security Agencies, other Federal Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) including North East Development Commission (NEDC) as well as locals from Gombe, where the DRR camp is located. The scheme also enjoys widespread collaboration and support of local and international NGOs. The key implementation partners are: a. United Nations International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF). b. International Organization for Migration (IOM). c. United States Agency for International Development (USAID). d. Department For International Development (DFID). e. Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD). f. North-East Regional Initiative (NERI). ‘Deradicalization. Deradicalization is the first stage of the programme after medical screening including the taking of DNA samples is conducted. It covers; psychotherapy, psycho-spiritual counselling, drug abuse intervention, art therapy, sports/recreation and introduction to western education to counter the BHT ideology. ‘Rehabilitation. The rehabilitation package of the programme includes; training in barbing, carpentry, cosmetology, farming, leatherworks, shoemaking, tailoring and welding. They will be issued with starter packs (basic tools) and provided with take-off funds. ‘Reintegration. Reintegration aspect of the DRR programme is the most delicate and longest phase that lasts beyond the camp. It entails a transitional justice initiative involving family linkage with the assistance of IOM and UNICEF among others. Administration of Oath of Allegiance is also conducted at this stage. The panel is headed by a judge of the Federal High Court with members drawn for relevant agencies. ‘Gleaning from the concept and conduct of Operation SAFE CORRIDOR, it is not a process of assembling raw repentant ex-combatants to inject back into the society by the Military. Rather, it is an international best practice for conflict management backed by relevant laws with the concurrence of key stakeholders such as international organizations and MDAs among others. ‘Since its inception in 2016, OPSC has admitted 893 ex-combatants for the Programme out of which 280 including 2 Chadians have been successfully reintegrated back into the society through their respective national and state authorities. Presently, there are 603 of them undergoing the DRR Programme and would be graduating by July 2020. The Operation is a success story as feedbacks from those reintegrated are positive. A particular one in Bama who learnt barbing as a vocation has successfully empowered “locals and is happily married with children.’ SOURCE: https://www.sunnewsonline.com/280-ex-terrorists-reintegrated-to-their-communities-dhq/ |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_lMkZ6Ng4U The National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, sitting in Abuja has upheld the victory of Senator Smart Adeyemi of the APC in the November 16 Kogi West Senatorial rerun election. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had declared Adeyemi who garnered 88,373 votes as the winner of the poll against Dino Melaye of PDP who scored 62,133. But Melaye had petitioned the tribunal seeking for him to be declared the winner of the election or on the contrary, the election is quashed for INEC to conduct fresh election. But the tribunal in a unanimous ruling on Wednesday said the prayer of the petitioner cannot stand as the Petitioner’s witnesses failed to substantiate their claims in the petition to warrant granting Melaye his prayers. The also held that the Petitioner failed to prove non-compliance with the standard of electoral acts in the election. The tribunal said all the 71 witnesses called by the petitioners contracted themselves during cross-examinations and made “worthless, unreliable and unmerited statement’ that cannot be relied on. The court also rejected the videos and other documents presented by the Petitioner during the final written addresses, because they were not pleaded uring proceedings. The Tribunal subsequently dismissed Melaye’s petition and upheld Senator Smart Adeyemi as duly and lawfully elected in the Kogi West Senate election. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxZoq4TCUU4 The Federal Government is to spend N2.951 trillion (as against the N2.4 trillion approved in the earlier bill) on debt service according to provisions contained in the revised 2020 Appropriation which has just passed its second reading in both houses of the National Assembly. Members of both chambers however frowned at the increase in the debt serving provision from N2.4 trillion approved in the 2020 budget in December 2019, to the new figure of N2.95 trillion. The revised Appropriation Bill saw a reduction in the 2020 budget as passed by the National Assembly in December 2019 to about N10.51 from the initial budget figure of N10.59. The revised 2020 Appropriation Bill however made no provision for petroleum subsidy, while oil production was reduced from 2.1mbpd to 1.93mbpd. The oil price benchmark was put at $25 per barrel. Moving the motion for the budget to be read a second time, Leaders of both chambers, Senator Yahaya Abdullahi and Rep. Ado Doguwa said that N398.505 billion is for Statutory Transfers. The budget of the National Assembly was however reduced from N128 billion to N115 billion in the revised budget. N4.928 trillion has been set aside for Recurrent (Non-Debt) Expenditure while the N2.230 trillion is for contribution to the Development Fund for Capital Expenditure for the year ending on 31 December, 2020. Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi, in his lead debate, recalled that the 2020 Budget was predicated on oil production of 2.18 million barrels per day and a benchmark oil price of $57 dollar per barrel with an exchange rate of N305 to one U.S. dollar. According to him, the outbreak of the Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19), and its rapid spin into a global pandemic has brought about corresponding economic consequences. Abdullahi said that as a result of the pandemic, “there has been a slow-down of global economic activities as most countries are on lockdown with movement only limited to essential goods or persons performing essential services. “Correspondingly, international oil prices have plunged triggered by the Saudi-Russia Oil War and weakening global demand. “Further to the above, most of the assumptions underpinning the 2020 FGN Budget have had to be revised in the face of current realities, as Nigeria is vulnerable to the current global economic disruption caused by the Covid-19 crisis which has led to decline in Crude-oil prices and spikes in risk aversion in the global capital markets. “Prior to the outbreak of Covid-19 Pandemic, the Nigerian economy had been characterized by wavering external sector and improving internal economic indicators. “Over-dependence on oil revenue, constrained fiscal space, low foreign and domestic investments and declining foreign reserves made the economy disproportionately vulnerable to the twin shocks of crude oil price/production collapse and a health crisis affecting negatively the informal sector which accounts for over half of the Nigeria’s GDP.” The Senate Leader noted that currently, Nigeria’s foreign reserves have declined to $35.9 billion in March, 2020 from $44.7 billion in April, 2020. He attributed the decrease to the impact of the decline in crude oil receipts. He said “the uncertainty and general decline in global economic activities caused by the Covid-19 Pandemic have further dimmed the prospect of reversing the downward trend in Foreign Portfolio Investments (FPIs) in the Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTBs).
