2000 inmates reportedly released as hoodlums stage yet another jailbreak in Edo state

2000 inmates have reportedly been released after some hoodlums staged yet another jailbreak at Oko correctional facility in Edo state.

Nine persons were reportedly killed during this jailbreak.

This comes hours after hoodlums stormed the correctional facility located along the Sapele Road in Benin City where over 100 inmates were set free.

The state government has since imposed a statewide curfew that began 4pm today October 19.

Some Canadian police officers have been seen in a viral video protecting some #EndSARS protesters in the country.



The protesters had taken to the streets to lend their voices to the campaign against police brutality witnessed in Nigeria.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday was reported to have been in a meeting with the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan and the Speaker House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila over the EndSARS protests across the nation.

This was revealed in a tweet by Bashir Ahmad, the Special Assistant to the President on New Media.

After the meeting, the NASS representatives, Lawan and Gbajabiamila, “appealed to Nigerian youth to end the #EndPoliceBrutality protests across the country as the government heard and accepted their genuine demands and working to address all of them.”

Speaking, the Senate President, Lawan said; “Since the issues [raised by the protesters] have been accepted [by the government] the time has come for the protests to stop, government needs to have time to implement the demands of the protesters”.

There was an accident between two cars at the every busy airport road in abuja.

It involved a taxi a Toyota candy belonging to a man who claims he is a military officer.

According to the officer, he was about overtaking the cab driver, and unfortunately, the driver switched lanes without overtaking. This then made the camry owner hit the cab man from the back, and the cab now spun and landed inside the drainage.

At about 3pm on Sunday, 18th October 2020, some ENDSARS protesters were seen pouring out along the airport road, Lugbe in Abuja to block the highway.

Though police men were seen approaching the protesters, traffic has already started building up as at the time the video was being recorded.

The protesters blocked the two sides of the express Road, meaning no one can go towards the airport, and no one can enter Abuja city from the airport.

There was a Lone accident on the games village area of Abuja. A vehicle believed to be an Escalade was on top speed and lost control.

From the skid marks on the road, one should have an idea how fast the car was probably going, till it lost control and then hit a tree.

In the video, you will see the tree was uprooted and the car badly damaged, while passersby stopped to check if there were any casualties in the accident.

CKN NEWS can confirm that protesters have now shutdown the Abuja city gate defying orders issued by the FCT Security Committee yesterday.

As at now vehicle cannot come into or leave the city from the Yar'Adua Expressway.

Vehicles also heading out or coming into the airport cannot have a right of passage into the city centre.

If you are heading in or out of Abuja from the CITY GATE use the Kubwa Expressway as an alternative route

President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, says the National Assembly will ensure that the five demands made to the Executive by #EndSARS protesters are implemented.
Lawan gave the assurance on Thursday at plenary after the Senate was briefed by the Senate Leader, Yahaya Abdullahi (APC – Kebbi North) on the intervention by the leadership to wade into the matter.

Giving details into the meeting between the Senate delegation and the protesters yesterday, Abdullahi said, “We met with a view to pacifying the protesters and also extending our commiseration with them over what happened.

“They explained that in the course of their peaceful demonstration, they were accosted by some hoodlums, who they alleged were directed by the police to attack them; and how they were able to weather the storm and assemble at the National Assembly to inform us of their travails.

“We sympathised with them and received the oral complaints that they wanted to present to the National Assembly.

“They complained of damages to their vehicles and some physical injuries that some of them sustained. Fortunately, there were no major injuries or even violent death.
“We implored them to submit a catalogue of their complaints and the damages or injuries that were inflicted upon them so that these can be conveyed to the appropriate authorities for interventions.

“Today, the minority leader, as we arranged yesterday, was there on the ground to receive the catalogue of complaints.

“Unfortunately those complains are not ready, so whenever they are ready, the leadership is going to compile and submit them to the appropriate authority for attention.

“I just wanted to inform my colleagues, so that we put this particular issue on the record.”

In his remarks, Lawan, who described the demands by the protesters as legitimate, said the National Assembly would prevail on the Executive arm of government to ensure expeditious implementation.

He, however, urged the protesters to go back home so as to give the Federal Government the chance to see to the implementation of their demands.

“We took a motion sponsored by Distinguished Senator Oluremi Tinubu on the challenges that we face, especially with respect to the SARS activities across the country and, of course, we took far-reaching resolutions.

“Nigerians, let me say, have the right to peaceful demonstration. When they feel very strongly about issues, they can do so to call the attention of the leaders of this country for appropriate action to be taken.

“I believe that the government has responded, SARS has been disbanded and all the five demands of the protesters have been accepted.

“What I’ll urge here is if such demands have been accepted, then we should expedite taking action to actualize them.

“I believe that when protesters demands are met, their goal should have been achieved. Therefore, there is need for our compatriots to go back home and give the government the chance to quickly and expeditiously implement those demands.

“Both chambers of the National Assembly have identified with the protests that they are legitimate protests and demands.

“I think the next vital step is for the protests to stop because the initial reasons for the protests have been accepted as facts and the government is trying to do everything possible.

“I urge the government, and that includes us, that we should push to ensure that those demands of the protesters that the executive side has accepted to implement are implemented as quickly as possible,” Lawan said.

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, yesterday kicked against the recent sale of gold bar by Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), saying the governor has no right to sell the mineral resources that belong to the federal government.

Omo-Agege who spoke during Senate plenary, while contributing to the general debate on 2021 budget, wondered why a state governor will have the audacity to sell gold bar to the apex bank.

According to him, the gold found in any state belongs to the federal government, adding that the revenue generated from such mineral resources like gold are to be shared among all the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He said: “Not too long ago, we saw the Governor of Zamfara State come before the CBN to present a gold bar worth close to about N5billion. The gold bar was presented for sale to the CBN. Mr. President, our people are beginning to wonder who owns this gold that is being sold to the CBN.


“They don’t sell oil in any of the Niger Delta states. I am wondering why the governor of a state should be selling gold bar from Zamfara State to the CBN. There are two problems with that. We believe that whatever revenue that ought to come from that transaction belongs to the entire country and not to the state government. That is number one and we should actually look into that. That is an area we really need to develop. There is a lot of revenue that could come from there that will take the burden from these international borrowings.”


It will be recalled that Item 39 under the Exclusive Legislative List of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) states that mines and minerals including oil fields, oil mining, geological surveys and natural gas are exclusively under the control of the federal government.

Also, the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act 2007, which was passed into law on March 16, 2007, to repeal the Minerals and Mining Act, No. 34 of 1999 for the purposes of regulating the exploration and exploitation of solid materials in Nigeria vested the control of all properties and minerals in Nigeria in the state, and prohibits unauthorised exploration or exploitation of minerals.


The Act further stated that all lands in which minerals have been found in commercial quantities shall from the commencement of the Act be acquired by the federal government in accordance with the Land Use Act.

Commenting on the budget, Omo-Agege canvassed for sustainable peace in the Niger Delta region so that the daily oil output can be realisable.

He said: “For us to be able to achieve the 1.86million barrels per day, certain things must be in place. We must maintain the peace in the Niger Delta Region before we can achieve this. Mr. President, when I say this, it begins to sound like a broken record. Every day, for those of us who represent the Niger Delta, we hardly sleep. We are very worried about every concern because these people are the golden eggs that take care of this economy.


“But Mr. President, they are jobless. There is nothing for them to do. It is very important that the youths of these communities are engaged. The only way to engage these youths is for the oil companies, who explore oil in these communities in the Niger Delta that they help in creating jobs for the youths and the only way to do that is to have their business operations headquarters located within the Niger Delta.

“In the absence of this, you will have all the youths participating in this agitation against SARS. The only reason they are in the streets is because there are no jobs to engage them. Once again, I want to appeal that the oil companies doing businesses in this country should relocate their headquarters to the region”.

Enyinnaya Abaribe, minority leader of the senate, says the 2021 budget of N13.08 trillion presented to a joint session of the national assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari is unrealistic.

Speaking on Tuesday during a debate on 2021 budget estimates, Abaribe faulted the assumptions the appropriation bill was premised on.

The budget is based on an exchange rate benchmark of N379/$ and crude oil production of 1.86 million barrels per day (including 400,000 barrels of condensate) at $40 per barrel.

Capital expenditure in the budget is estimated at N2.083 trillion which represents 29 percent of the total budget. It targets three percent GDP growth and 11.95 percent inflation rate.

However, the minority leader said the budget is “nothing but old news.”

“This budget is nothing but the same. We have a budget based on unrealistic expectations. We are not also so sure what the oil situation is going to be,” he said.

“If the budget is based on assumption, I agree but why are not assuming properly. I want to go ahead and say it does not reflect the understanding of the fundamental challenges of today.

“This budget is nothing but old news. Every time the same old news, nothing new.”

On his part, George Sekibo, senator representing Rivers north-east, wondered why the funds earmarked for capital projects is less the deficit.

“The budget of 13.08 trillion has a deficit of 5.20 trillion. How can the capital project be lower than the deficit? I hope when we get the money, it is properly utilised,” he said.

Ike Ekweremadu, senator representing Enugu west, expressed dismay that the projected debt to GDP ratio is over three percent.

“For the first time, the debt to GDP Ratio is over 3%. I want the committee on finance and appropriation to find a solution to this,” he said.

“I have been very worried about the way we are going in terms of borrowing. I am concerned about the loan being given by China. They will not let you go off any of the debt because all the monies are for specific projects and if they are not done they take over,” he said.

Debate on the budget was adjourned till Wednesday.

Governor Bello Matawalle has said that the state government has so far saved 31 kilograms of refined gold as a reserve for the state government.

A statement by Zailani Bappa, the Special Adviser on Public Enlightenment, Media and Communications to the governor, said the move was meant to boost the financial base of the state.

“Already, we have an offer of N5 billion from some interested partners to be supplying them with gold bars over a period of time,” Mr Matawalle revealed.

“The Gold was wholly mined and refined by our local miners. It is a measure we are taking to ensure that the mineral resources in Zamfara benefit the people.

Mr Matawalle said the government will continue to save gold for the state in designated banks, and ensure that the state gets the respect it deserves by having the security needed for any business transaction.

He said the gold was purchased by the state government and the idea is also meant to boost the trade in the state.


“The situation today is that a few people mine the gold, take it abroad and trade it out there without a single benefit for the people in the state. This is what we want to change,” the governor said.

Mr Matawalle recently took some of the gold bars to President Muhammadu Buhari where the president said it was the first time anyone physically showed him the Zamfara gold.

Recall that Governor Seyi Makinde had confirmed that a young Nigerian was shot dead at the #EndSARS protest which held in Ogbomoso yesterday October 10.



It was further learnt that Jimoh's father is a driver who arrived home to meet the corpse of his son after getting a call that he's been shot.



It is being alleged that Jimoh was shot by a policeman during the protest in Ogbomosho , but the Oyo state police command has denied the report stating that non of its officers was involved in any shooting.
