The government has started repair works on pipeline destroyed by militants

– This is coming even after Niger Delta Avengers warned the government not to repair it

The federal government has dared the Niger Delta Avengers and proceeded with the repair of pipelines destroyed by the militants.

The Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for destruction of oil and gas pipelines in the region and has warned the government not to carry out any repair on the facilities or face their wrath.


The militant group warned on June 13 that no repair should be done until the right atmosphere for dialogue is achieved.

“We are going to redirect and reactivate all our activities if the government, oil companies and their services firms do not heed these modest warnings of not carrying out repair works and suspend the buying of crude oil from our region, as we await the right atmosphere that will engender genuine dialogue,”

The militants bombed pipelines belonging to the Nigeria Gas Company on Wednesday, May 26 at Ubefan Creek in Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri south-west local government area of Delta state but in spite of their warning, the federal government had started repair works in the region.

Vanguard reports that there was a heavy military presence in the region as soldiers escorted repair workers.

Residents in the area conformed that soldiers were escorting badges, tugboats loaded with equipment and personnel heading for the repairs of the damaged facility.


Chief Moses Bebenimibo who is the chairman of Kunukunuma Federated Communities confirmed that repair works were going on but complained that Melcurt Nigeria Limited that was handling the maintenance did not involve the host communities.

He said he or the communities were not approached by the repairers at all and accused the federal government of being interested only on the oil that flows in the communities and not the well-being of the people.

“They are good in using the military to always intimidate and subdue us in matters that affect us as a people from this end.”

A final year student of the Technical College, Ikorodu, Lagos State, Iseoluwa Omomowo, has disappeared while running an errand for his stepbrother’s wife in the Ebute-Meta area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the 28-year-old Ilaje, Ondo State indigene, had gone to withdraw N8,000 from a First Bank of Nigeria Automated Teller Machine on Saturday, but he did not return home.

It was gathered that by Monday, his cell phone had been switched off.

Our correspondent gathered that efforts by the family to locate his whereabouts had been abortive.

His stepbrother, Dr Omoteyinshe Oluwole, explained that the victim was the family’s last child, adding that he had been living with him for about five years.

Oluwole, a medical doctor, said he was in Sagamu, Ogun State, when Omomowo went missing.

He said, “He started living with me in 2011. He is a final year student of Electrical Department of the Technical College, Ikorodu.

“On that Saturday, I sent some money to my wife’s bank account. My wife asked him to withdraw N8,000 from the ATM. After withdrawing the money, he was supposed to go to the Lagos Island to get a pair of trousers from my tailor.

“At exactly 12.28pm, she received an alert on her phone that the money had been withdrawn from the account.

“Around 4pm, my wife called me that she had yet to see my brother and she was going to the market and needed somebody to stay with our child. I called him on the telephone, but he didn’t pick his calls.”

Oluwole said when he called the tailor, he was told that his brother had yet to arrive.

“Around 6pm again, I called the tailor again, and he said he had not seen my brother. We called his cell phone repeatedly, but nobody picked the calls.

“At 9pm when he didn’t return home, we thought he had gone to watch football at a viewing centre. The police said we could not report until after 24 hours,” he added.

A family friend and lawyer, Ige Asemudara, said the family had gone to different police stations, as well as prayer houses.

He said, “In one of the places we went to, we were told that he was abducted by some people and they would still release him.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dolapo Badmos, said, “The case was reported to us on Sunday. We are investigating the matter.”

In other not to be humiliated while on the throne, some senators including those who had vowed to remain with him to the end of his trial at the anti-graft court, yesterday, asked the Senate President to consider the resignation option so as to save the Senate, as an institution.

Vanguard gathered that the option was thrown to him at a special meeting held by a group of some loyal senators, who followed him to his Maitama residence, shortly after the end of yesterday’s trial at the court.

But as Saraki is considering the option, senators of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, appeared to be at loggerhead with their counterparts in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, over the Senate President’s successor.

While the APC senators are insisting on producing Saraki’s successor, those of the PDP are favorably disposed to anointing one of their own, a development that has further polarized the Red Chamber.

A senator of the PDP fold, who spoke to Vanguard late yesterday, but on condition that his identity would not be mentioned, said Saraki was given the option of resigning basically to save the institution of the legislature.

‘”I can confirm to you that at a special meeting held yesterday, we asked the Senate President to consider the option of resignation.

“We believe that doing so would preserve the institution of the Senate, “he said, refusing to speak further.

Asked whether the Senate President was considering the resignation option, the lawmaker said ‘” this was just thrown at him this evening. We believe that he would do the right thing.'”.

Meanwhile, names of senators Abdullahi Adamu, representing Nasarawa West from the APC and Suleiman Adokwe of the PDP were being touted as possible replacements of the Senate President to press time.

Unemployment is the harbinger of Boko Haramism, harbinger of IPO¬Bism, OPCism and militancy in the Niger Delta. It is a scourge and serious disease condition that we must fight and that is why we are in this ministry and government. We have job creation programmes under the supervision of the Vice President and other inter-ministerial ones that will be rolled out very soon.

By the time we roll out, more funds will be put into the economy. Let us warn that the funds are not for stealing.

The only difference between APC and PDP is the stealing of the lots of floating funds. Many of the elite were grabbing these floating funds and they are the ones protesting that they are not happy with the present government.

Those complaining especially the elite are members or loyalists of the PDP. We are not bothered because we are going to continue with our common-people’s programme and I want to assure that the tide will soon change.

So, we are waiting for the budget. Don’t forget that we are not the ones that appropriate funds but the National Assembly. We have given them budget, done some alterations and amendments as needs be in areas where some people try to mutilate and we are waiting for now.

Once they approve the budget as proposed, we roll out our programmes” he said.

A 67 year-old Lebanese has been allegedly slaughtered by his close associate in Kano. The State Commissioner of police, Muhammad Musa Katsina on Tuesday said, the incident occurred at the deceased resident located at Unity Road of Kano Central Business District.


The Police boss said that 4 suspects have already been arrested in connection with the gruesome murder of the Lebanese, adding that “they have so offered useful information”.

Details of the incident, Mr. Katsina said would be made public in due course. A similar incident occurred last week where unknown assailants slaughtered one Kabir Umar Gumel in his Yakasai home in the municipality barely 4 days he was declared missing by the family.

The Department of State Security has informed the court that there is likelihood that witnesses for the trial of the director of Radio Biafra Nnamdi Kanu might not testify without protection.
The DSS said it is important that the witnesses are protected from the public

Speaking at the hearing on an application made by the DSS, the prosecution counsel, David Kaswe told the court that it is obvious the defendants are absent.

He however said the application is one that can be heard on the absence of the defendant.

Having no objection from the defense counsel, Chuks Muoma, the judge, John Tsoho ruled that hearing on the application commence.

The prosecution informed the court that attached to the motion on notice is a seven paragraph affidavit by one Etim Okon with “heavy” reliance on all paragraphs especially paragraph four.

He said the crux of the application is to seek protection for the witness the prosecution intends to call in for the trial of Kanu, in the interest of justice.

“My lord, I have looked at the counter affidavit served by defense, I observed with the greatest respect that the argument as canvased by the defense shows a misconstruction,” Kaswe said.

But in his defense, Muoma said the prosecution had all the time to reply to his addresses by way of written address.

He urged the court to disallow the prosecution’s oral address and if already on record should be expunged by the court.

My lord, the is a misconstructionas to whether we a asking for a secret trial or a witness protection,” the defense said.

He asked the court to draw a distinction between a secret trial and protection for the witness – which he said that they are asking for.

He added that witnessesare also unwilling to testify without some form of protection.

But Muoma called on the court to ask the prosecution to go back and read the application before the court.

He said the prosecution’s application implies that masked individuals will be testifying before the court.

But in clarification, the prosecution said his application is to allow witnesses most of whom he said are civilians protection.

He added that most of the witnesses reside in the geographical location of the defendants.

He also said that the court should take into consideration that since the arrest of Kanu, there has been protest in the defendant’s region.

But Muoma said, on the contrary, violence in the areas are being mainly constituted by the federal government whom he said have unleashed terror on individuals going about the normal activities.

Arguing further, Kaswe said the application is harmless and majorly asks that only accredited journalists cover the trial.

Kaswe said: “We also asks that these press men will not make public identities and residential locations of these witnesses.“

But the judge in his response said the question is whether the prosecution’s last prayer is in cognizance of his prayers.

Tsoho also asked the prosecution to be consistent with the prayers and reliefs sought.

But Muoma citing section 364 of the 1999 Constitution as amended said there in no provision for “masquerades” to testify as witnesses.

Muoma said: “An accused person under our jurisprudence must be confronted with his accusers eye balls to eye balls.”

He added that Nigeria operates a system of procedure on a common law under the Administration of Criminal Justice Act
“My lord, it is compatible and common sense with jurisprudence that you cannot accuse someone on the streets in public and try him in the bedroom,” Muoma said.

He said the tenets of justice out ways the application by the DSS and that there is no merit in the prayers sought.

He also said that secret trial is for terrorism not for the kind of offences – possession of firearms and management of an unlawful society – that the defendants have been accused of.

Nnamdi Kanu later arrived in court during procession. As at the time of filing this report, the judge adjourned the matter till 2 pm for ruling.

Millions of British drivers face rising petrol prices after crisis talks between oil giants Saudi Arabia and Russia led to a freeze on output.

An unprecedented meeting behind closed doors between the two nations saw them agree to keep oil production to January levels in a bid to stop prices plummeting further.

The worldwide oil glut has seen the cost of a barrel plunge to a 12-year low of under $30 and analysts predicted it could crash to $20 as fierce rivalry between the oil producers saw no signs of a slow down.

But Tuesday's agreement in Doha, Qatar could mark the death of cheap petrol for UK car owners as motoring groups say the end of the 99.9p a litre bonanza is just weeks away.

Oil prices have already rallied from $30 to $34 a barrel and AA spokesman Paul Watters said: “The players in the oil market are seeking to address this glut so the roller coaster will start all over again.

“This has nothing to do with an oil shortage - it’s all about managing the price and drivers are always the victims when something like this happens.”

And Simon Williams, RAC spokesman added: “The £1 a litre petrol may disappear within weeks as we see a few more dollars added to the price of a barrel of oil.”

Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi admitted price was at the heart of the output freeze.

He said: “We don’t want significant gyrations in prices, we don’t want reduction in supply, we want to meet demand - we want a stable oil price.”

While oil ministers from Saudi, Russia, Qatar and Venezuela have agreed to the freeze rather than a cut in production, all eyes will be on Iran tomorrow (Wed) as it holds talks in Tehran with Iraq and other oil producing nations to state its position.

Until now it has vowed to pump a million barrels of oil a day as it is playing catch-up with rivals following the recent lifting of sanctions.

While the oil giants slug it out, there are fears that Britain’s 30 million drivers could be hit with a double whammy at the pumps as Chancellor George Osborne is eyeing up fuel duty to plug the budget deficit and balance his books by 2019.

Fuel tax has been frozen for four years but next month’s budget could see it rise in line with inflation and boost his coffers by £3 billion.

The RAC said: “We are very concerned that the Chancellor will increase fuel duty and are expecting the worst for the budget.”
