By Richard Clarke
Arsène Wenger has given Robin van Persie perhaps the highest praise a striker can ever receive – by making comparisons to Marco van Basten.
The latter was perhaps the greatest all-round forward the modern game has seen. The Dutchman led his country to success in Euro 88 and AC Milan to a clutch of honours two decades ago.
Van Persie is hardly a carbon copy but, Wenger argues, the 26-year-old has strong technical similarities.
“I think he’s a Van Basten type,” he said. “By which I mean he’s a technical centre forward. He has that classy first touch, sharp movement and a short back-lift.
“I always thought he was more a first striker than second striker and I must say I love him there because he has a brain. He can play others in and he can score. His movement is intelligent around the box and if we score a lot of goals a big part is down to him.
“Look at the one he scored [against Birmingham on Saturday]. You can say it was a bit lucky but you need a specialist soft touch to control the ball in that situation. With a normal player, the ball goes five yards away but with his second touch he puts it straight back on his left leg and scores.” |

Jay Simpson QPR 4-1 Reading Tuesday, October 20 Jay Simpson scored his fifth goal in eight Championship games as QPR hit four past Reading. Akos Buzsaky opened the scoring with a free-kick shortly after the half-hour mark before Simpson volleyed in the Rs' second six minutes before the break. Rowan Vine made it three after 71 minutes and Patrick Agyemang extended the hosts' lead with 83 minutes on the clock. Brian Howard scored a consolation goal for Reading shortly afterwards but it was an impressive QPR who registered the victory to leave them just two points off the play-off zone.
Henri Lansbury Ipswich 1-1 Watford Tuesday, October 20 Watford's Nathan Ellington scored a stoppage-time equaliser at Ipswich on Tuesday evening. Henri Lansbury was withdrawn in the final minute of the match after making his seventh start for the Hornets. A Gareth McAuley header had put the hosts in front early on in the match, and they looked to be heading for victory until Ellington tapped home a Danny Graham cross in the 94th minute. The point sees Watford remain 12th in the Championship table with 18 points from 13 games.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas Blackpool 3-0 Sheffield United Tuesday, October 20 Jay Emmanuel-Thomas played 90 minutes as Blackpool continued their unbeaten home record with a 3-0 win over Sheffield United. The Seasiders took the lead on the hour mark when on-loan defender Marcel Seip headed home David Vaughn's corner. Jason Euell slotted home shortly afterwards to make it 2-0 and the third was added by Charlie Adam with eight minutes remaining. Blackpool remain fifth in the Championship table but are now just two points off pace-setters West Brom.Wenger - This squad is my most attacking yet

By Nick Teale Arsène Wenger believes his current squad could be the most attack-minded side he has ever produced. Arsenal are currently averaging three goals per game in all competitions having found the net 39 times in 13 matches this season. And the goalscoring is being spread across the squad too. No less than 15 players have hit the back of the net so far this term. At his pre-match press conference, Wenger was asked if this was the most exciting team he has managed. "In terms of goalscoring potential, certainly," responded the manager. "We have shown that up to now and there are still some offensive players who have not [been able to] contribute yet, like Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott. "Eduardo and Carlos Vela have not played many games, Vela has not played many games and they can all score goals." |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Bordeaux Vs. Bayern Munich [2 - 1] On Wed 21st by tayoccu(op): 10:08am On Oct 21, 2009 |
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/4/48/Girondins_bordeaux.png/140px-Girondins_bordeaux.png vs After a superb winning streak in the French League Bordeaux have suffered two straight losses, first against St Etienne and last Saturday against Auxerre. Penalty shots were decisive in Auxerre, after Bordeaux missed one in the first half the home took advantage on theirs in the second half when they decided with a penalty kick. Laurent Blanc rested star player Yohann Gourcuff in the fixture to have him ready for the Champions League fight, but had obviously to pay a high price. Bayern won but did not play convincing against Freiburg. Luca Toni made his first appearance from start but couldn’t end the forward goal drought in Bayern. Instead, it was 20-year old Thomas Müller that together with a generous own goal from Freiburg’s defender Du Ri Cha that were decisive for Bayern. Olic, Gomez, Toni and Klose have so far only scored five goals all together in eight matches and it is evident that Louis van Gaal, Bayern’s manager, haven’t’ yet find a solution on how to form the attack and which players to choose from. Bayern Munich are a different team without Robben and Ribéry. The situation for both is uncertain. Robben is most likely to be able to play on Wednesday, while Ribéry probably has to wait for a while to really get rid of the injury as van Gaal is tired of always seeing it flare up again as it has done during the whole season. Bordeaux have no serious injury doubt as play-maker Gourcuff probably reenters in the squad. As the group continue being undecided the fixtures become more and more important, so is this one. Both teams need points to hold the race with Juventus for the two top spots. Bordeaux are not in very good shape and Bayern are probably not losing in this match, a draw look probable but the Germans should have the best chances on the win. |
