PoliticsDo You Know General Muhammadu Buhari? by Tbillz(op): 6:33am On Jan 13, 2015
In less than two months from now, Nigerians are going to take a political decision which is capable of making or destroying the entity known as and called Nigeria. This is the presidential election slated for Saturday, February 14, 2015, a day which I regard as one of history for our country.

Everyone knows today the strength and weakness of Jonathan because he is the current president of the country. To be sure, democracy is not a doctrine of perfection. So, President Jonathan is not being presented here as a perfect leader. No one except God is ever perfect.

Fortunately for the people, General Buhari had once headed this country as a military man. It is therefore our duty to present to Nigerians what Buhari had done while in office as a head of state against what Jonathan is doing.

As soon as Buhari took over power in Nigeria in the early hours of January 1, 1984, he employed pure military harshness and bravado to govern the people of Nigeria. On daily basis, soldiers in full battle gears were let loose on the people of Nigeria going about their normal business. Petty traders using kiosks in front of their homes not only had such kiosks pulled down, but they were usually thoroughly caned and detained, after losing their sole employment.

Urinating in public places was outlawed without law. Yet, there was never a single public toilet facility around. If you were seen or caught urinating in the open, you were publicly flogged by Buhari’s soldiers. Overnight, the regime wanted the streets of Lagos to look like those of Washington D.C. or London, or Paris or Amsterdam and such other dainty capitals of the world!

Patriotism suddenly became the battle cry of the Buhari regime, which was good, if not forced down the throat of the people. Patriotism is a good thing. But it must be earned by the state. A state that takes good care of all its citizens from the cradle to the grave naturally expects such citizens to be patriotic. And usually, such citizens are patriotic.

The Buhari regime was a military government with an attitude.

Before I am done here, let me recall that one of the first tasks of the Buhari junta was the invasion of the private residence of Chief Obafemi Awolowo. The soldiers sent to the Apapa residence of Chief Awolowo rummaged his documents and vandalised his papers.

Chief Awolowo’s dream for Nigeria was far beyond such childish pranks and trivialities that constituted the corner-stone of Buhari’s administration. Chief Awolowo was the country’s chief crusader against anti-democratic forces and was known throughout the world as an indefatigable fighter for the right of man. Throughout his life, Awo struggled to get the economic ship of the Nigerian state on course.

Yet, the same Buhari will now want off-springs and followers of Awo, Jakande, Onabanjo, Bola Ige, Ajasin, Ambrose Alli, Nwobodo, Rimi,Goni, Barde, Solomon Lar and other crusaders to vote for him.

PoliticsHello Mr. President, How Market? by Tbillz(op): 6:26pm On Jan 10, 2015
Deceiver of brethren whose belly is his god. Little wonder the former President Obasanjo said "I know Femi Fani Kayode, give him food to chop, he will sing and dance for you."

What manner of a president would be this consumed by personal ambition to the extent of no longer recognizing what bitter division is all about? How can a president be persistently holding his political party’s (PDP) meeting in the State House and did not see that as an initiation of division?

How can a president of a country, who claims to be a Christian be gallivanting from one church to the other like those that Jesus called Pharisees, making political statements without giving a damn to the sensibility of others, more so that a chapel has been built in the State House to make his religious belief a private affair; and yet thinks he is not dividing the country along religious lines?

They go from church to church, from Jerusalem to Galilee, yet they do not stop stealing government money! They love God with their mouths but their heart is far from God. Hippocrates! How can a president of a country yearning for national integration allow a group of rag tag supporters like TAN to go to the extent of dividing Nigeria football supporters club by inscribing ‘TAN, Supporters of Goodluck’ on the T-Shirt worn by supporters of a national football team during the Africa Cup Qualifying Match?

Indeed, I agree that such a president needs a parent. Thank God he has found one among his type. His newly adopted father is Babangida. Babangida has endorsed him. However, Babangida has also made it clear that his government was run by angels given the scale of corruption which prevails in Nigeria of today.

I do not know why people are frowning at Babangida’s endorsement of Jonathan. The exchange between the two men-united by expertise in science and art of corruption-is mutually beneficial. Through words, Babangida has endorsed Jonathan. Through acts, Jonathan has canonised Babangida. Combining the two, it can be said that what Babangida can do, Jonathan can do even better.

Nevertheless, God is fighting back already, the people’s blind eyes are opening, the Dark Ages have almost passed out of our land. This market will soon be over; but before then, and as TAN would say, "Keep on doing it Mr President." The dealers with you are more than the minders who tell you the truth! Hello, Mr. President, how market!

CareerPlanning For Financial Curveballs by Tbillz(op): 7:26pm On Jan 01, 2015
Planning for life's little surprises

There’s an old saying that “life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.” How true for many of us. An unexpected pregnancy, an exciting job offer abroad, a new love… These things often happen when we least expect them. The key, however, to turning such surprises into positive experiences comes down to a bit of foresight and financial preparation. The right groundwork can help you manage expectations, allowing you to achieve goals that at first may seem daunting — be it early retirement or living a clutter-free life. Analysing your current situation and making a plan on how to get from point A to point B are key. It’s not all down to fate. Click through the arrows above to see how you can control your destiny.

5. Yes, you can retire before your 40th birthday

There’s retiring early, and then there’s retiring early. In the US, the average adult retires at 61, but it’s possible to hang up your working hat sooner. In some countries, such as India, many workers aim to retire as young as 45 or 50. It requires serious organisation and financial commitment, but it’s not impossible. You just have to start now. “People don’t really start thinking about retirement until their 40s,” said Helen Hogan, an investment adviser in Missouri in the US. “The earlier you start, the better, because of the power of compound interest.” Retiring early requires having no debt, which means paying off student loans, consumer debt and even your mortgage on an accelerated schedule. It also involves keeping your fixed costs down, and even downsizing your lifestyle. The less you have to pay each month toward living expenses, the more you have to sock away toward your early dream retirement — and the fewer bills you’ll have to pay when you stop working. Of course, retiring at 40 isn’t for everyone. Consider that you’ll have decades ahead of you without the daily office routine or coworkers to keep you on track. “Some people get depressed after retiring because they miss the office,” Hogan said. “They really need to think about what they’re going to do with their time.” Read more on retiring before most of your peers. 4. Making the big leap: Not marriage, just moving in

Living together outside of marriage is something that’s becoming more acceptable and common around the world. Cohabitation is the fastest growing type of family structure in the UK. In the US, three out of four women have lived with a significant other by the age of 30. It’s “almost expected now,” said Hilary Hendershott, a financial planner in California in the US. But merging households involves more than sending out change-of-address cards. There are discussions you should have first about finances, budgeting and household responsibilities. You should be on the same page about your future and what you would do if life throws you a curveball, such as an unexpected pregnancy. “Many times people have issues when life situations pop up because they never asked each other the right questions,” said Melisa Alaba, a life coach in Illinois in the US. Have you had a frank conversation about how you’ll handle the bills? Are you thinking of buying property together? (Bad idea.) Did you know it’s not wise to move all of your money into a joint account? Read more about moving in without marriage. (Thinkstock)

3. So you’re having an ‘oops’ baby

An unexpected pregnancy can throw your life — and budget — for a real loop. Having a child is a tremendous financial obligation. In the US, raising a child from birth to age 18 will run you more than $240,000, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Bringing up a child in the UK to age 21 is estimated to cost about £222,000 ($376,679), according to UK insurer Liverpool Victoria. If you suddenly realise you are pregnant, you and your partner “need to have a serious sit-down to review and discuss finances,” said Carmen Wong Ulrich, co-Founder and President of ALTA Wealth Management in New York City. “Assess your current situation before freaking out about the future.” For instance, what’s going to happen to your family’s work situation? Will one parent have to take time off or leave a job? Squeezing an extra person into your plan involves looking at the big picture — from your job to your retirement plan to budgeting for the baby gear you need to buy. Don’t panic over an “oops” baby, said Brian Frederick, a financial planner in Arizona in the US: “The big thing is to be flexible…Take a deep breath and come up with a new plan.” Read more on preparing for an unexpected pregnancy. 2. Price shock: The sting of moving abroad

So you got that new job abroad. Congrats! But before you open a bottle of bubbly, make sure you’ve considered all the ins and outs of relocating yourself — and possibly a family — to a new country. “It’s a challenge, and it’s not going to be easy,” said Ryan Kahn, a career coach and founder of the Hired Group in California in the US. First, you have to wrap up your life where you live currently. Then you have to set up a whole new existence somewhere very far away, taking differences in cost of living into account. Housing may be twice as costly or taxes could take a huge chunk of your salary. “You could be looking at a great job offer making $50,000 more a year, but it might not be so great when you look at how much it’s going to cost you,” said Julia Chung, a financial and estate planner in Langley, British Columbia in Canada. Yet, there are numerous things you can do to make the move smartly. They range from negotiating a smart relocation package, to getting a head start on home and car purchases. What you overlook now may cost you and your family dearly when you arrive at the new assignment. “Someone’s spouse might be a teacher, and the assumption is that teachers can just go out and get another teaching job,” Chung said. “But it’s a really good idea to look at their industry. It’s surprising how much people don’t research this kind of thing.” Read more on the navigating the costs of moving abroad. (Getty Images)

1. The joy of living with less

There’s decluttering… and then there’s minimalism. The minimalist lifestyle is focused on removing everything from your life that isn’t essential or important. While your definition of “essential” might differ from your neighbor’s, the general idea is to make do with less. And the less you have, the less you must buy, store and maintain. To live with less is to free up your time and money for other things. It’s a time consuming process to divest yourself of your stuff, but it can be done, as long as you approach it with a plan. Gain some momentum by ditching the easy giveaways — coffee cups you never use and that horrible wedding gift. Find homes for other items at local charities or by using local classified sites (such as Craigslist) to find eager takers. “Throwing it all in the garbage can make you feel guilty or wasteful,” said Cristin Frank, US author of Living Simple, Free & Happy. A minimalist lifestyle also involves shopping mindfully, considering whether your space is right for you and getting rid of things at your own pace. “Comparing your progress to someone else is rarely helpful,” said Joshua Becker, a minimalist in Arizona and writer of the blog BecomingMinimalist.com. Read more on embracing a minimalist lifestyle. (Thinkstock)

PoliticsYou’ve Made A Career Of Lying – Soyinka Jabs Obasanjo by Tbillz(op): 10:44pm On Dec 25, 2014
Nobel Prize-winning poet and playwright, Wole Soyinka has delivered to scathing response to Olusegun Obasanjo on comments made by the former Nigerian President about Professor Soyinka in his new book “My Watch.”

Mr. Obasanjo had belittled Prof. Soyinka’s political expertise saying: “He is surely a better wine connoisseur and a more successful “aparo” (guinea fowl) hunter than a political critic, not to talk of what he would do as a politician…I take him seriously on almost all issues except on the political particularly Nigerian politics.”

But in a treatise, titled Watch and Pray, Watch and Prey, Soyinka labelled the former president an “infantile career liar.”

According to Soyinka, Obasanjo was“a seasoned predator on others’ achievements – he preys on their names, their characters, their motivations, their true lives, preys on gossip and preys on facts, preys on contributions to collective undertakings…even preys on their identities, substituting his own where possible. Well, hopefully he may actually believe in the inevitable End to all vanities?”

Read Soyinka’s treatise here:

“I had fully attuned myself to the fact that our Owu retiree soldier and prolific author is an infliction that those of us who share the same era and nation space must learn to endure. However, it does appear that there is no end to this individual’s capacity for infantile mischief, and for needless, mind-boggling provocations, such as his recent ‘literary’ intrusion on my peace.

Perhaps I ought to interrupt myself here with an apology to some mutual acquaintances – ‘blessed peacemakers’ and all – especially in this season of ‘peace and goodwill to all men’. Please know that your efforts have not been entirely in vain. I had a cordial exchange with Obasanjo over the phone recently – engineered by himself, his ground staff and/or a chance visitor – when I had cause to visit his Presidential Laundromat for the first time ever. During that exchange, I complemented him on making some quite positive use of landed property that was acquired under morally dubious circumstances, and blatantly developed through a process that I denounced as ‘executive extortionism’. That obscene proceeding has certainly set a competitive precedent for impunity in President Jonathan’s recent fund-raising shindig, editorialized in The Punch (December 23, 2014) as “Impunity Taken too Far”. So much for the latest from that direction – we mustn’t allow Handing-Over notes between presidents to distract us for too long.

Creative conversion

To return to our main man, and friendly interventionists, you may like to note that I went so far as to engage him in light banter, stating that some of his lesser sins would be forgiven him for that creative conversion of the landscape – a conversation that he shortly afterwards delightedly shared with at least three mutual acquaintances. I promised a follow-up visit to view some mysterious rock script whose existence, he informed me, was uncovered by workers during ground clearing. The exchange was, in short, as good as ‘malice towards none’ that any polemicist could hope to contribute to the ongoing season of peace and goodwill. Obviously that visit will not now take place, any more than the pursuit of vague notions of some creative collaboration with his Centre that began to play around my mind.

That much I do owe you from my report card. Perhaps you will now accept that there are individuals who are born incorrigible but, more importantly, that some issues transcend one’s personal preferences for harmonious human relationships even in a season of traditional good will. The change in weather conditions sits quite well with me, however, since we are both acquainted with the Yoruba proverb that goes: the child that swears his mother will not sleep must also prepare for a prolonged, sleepless infancy. So let it be with Okikiola, the overgrown child of circumstance.

One of the incessant ironies that leapt up at me as I read Obasanjo’s magnum opus was that we are both victims of a number of distasteful impositions – such as being compelled again and again to seek justice against libel in the law courts. I felt genuine empathy to read that he still has a pending thirty-year case instituted by him against his alleged libelers! Judgment was delivered in my favour regarding one of the most nauseating only this year, after surviving technical and other procrastinations, defendant evasions and other legalistic impediments for nearly as long as his.

Resurrection ritual language

That leaves only a veritable Methuselah on the court list still awaiting re-listing under the resurrection ritual language known as de novo. Unfortunately, not all acts of defamation or willful misrepresentation are actionable, otherwise, my personal list against this newly revealed fellow-sufferer would have counted for an independent volume of the Nigerian Law Report since our paths first crossed during the Civil War. My commitment to the belief in the fundamental right of all human beings not to be lied against remains a life obsession, and thus demands, at the very least, an obligation of non-commission among fellow victims.

I must, therefore, reserve a full, frontal dissection of Obasanjo’s My Watch for later, most especially since the work itself is currently under legal restraint and is not readily accessible to a general readership. So, for now, let me single out just one of the most glaring instances of this man’s compulsive career of lying, one sample that the media can readily check upon and use as a touchstone – if they do need one – in assessing our author’s multifaceted claims and commentaries on people and events. I refer here to the grotesque and personally insulting statement that he has attributed to me for some inscrutable but obviously diversionary reasons. In the process, this past Master of Mendacity brazenly implicates an innocent young man, Akin Osuntokun, who once served him as a Special Adviser. Instead of conferring dignity on a direct rebuttal of an ignoble fabrication, I shall simply make a personal, all-embracing attestation

PoliticsBuhari Gets 44.5 Million Naira Campaign Funding by Tbillz(op): 10:25pm On Dec 23, 2014
The Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari (retired) says Nigerians have been contributing the sum of 100 Naira each for his presidential campaign for the 2015 general elections, insisting that he is not breaking any law as regards the funding.

General Buhari told a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday that he had adopted the approach by US President Barack Obama, when he asked his supporters to contribute towards his campaign.

He said that the crowdfunding project had so far realised the sum of 44.5 million Naira through direct deposit and sale of donation cards

The APC flag bearer had told supporters while delivering a speech on the day of the presidential primary election that he had no money to lobby or gratify any one, asking for their support.

The funds so far raised, according to him, showed the kind of support that he had received from Nigerians.

The former military Head of State, General Buhari, will on February 14 vie for the presidential seat with the incumbent President and flag bearer of the Peoples Democratic Party, Goodluck Jonathan.

PoliticsBuhari’s Running Mate: APC Leaders Favour Oshiomhole by Tbillz(op): 3:14am On Dec 15, 2014
Tinubu tipped for Senate President, may take ticket from wife

Barring any last-minute change, the coast now seems clear for Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, to emerge as running mate to Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, APC, as the party rounds off its series of caucus sessions today.

Buhari had emerged on Thursday as the APC presidential candidate at the party’s convention in Lagos, defeating close rivals like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Following Buhari’s emergence, the party leaders have been holding closed-door meetings in Lagos, to consider candidates for the vice president slot.

A source at one of the meetings said to have held at the Bourdillon residence of the party national leader in Lagos, former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu, disclosed that the APC had finally resolved to zone the position of Vice President to the South-South region.

The top member of the party who craved anonymity, said: “Initially, we wanted to zone the position to the South-West but we also put into consideration, the fact that President Jonathan is from the South-South and it may be unwise to take the Presidency away from the zone under the circumstance.”

The source added that two candidates were considered for the position, namely Edo Governor Adams Oshiomhole, and his Rivers counterpart, Rotimi Amaechi.

He explained that the party eventually saw the Oshiomhole option as more attractive for about four reasons.

“One, he is a former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress and as such, the labour force still see him as their leader.

“Two, he is a Christian from the Roman Catholic sect, which accounts for the highest population of Christians in the country

. “Again, Oshiomhole is vociferous, vocal and articulate in persuasive prowess, unlike Buhari who is not as such endowed with the gift of the garb.

“And above all, Oshiomhole speaks the Hausa language fluently as he grew up in Kaduna where he had his early education.”

The source further disclosed that the fact that the current national chairman of the APC, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun is not only from the South-South but from Edo State as with Oshiomhole, was put into consideration at the Lagos meeting.

“We have decided that Odigie-Oyegun should step down for the sake of Oshiomhole and it would seem he is showing understanding on the issue,” he stressed. The source also hinted that the South-West will now be compensated with the position of Senate President by the APC and that Tinubu was preferred for the position.

He said the former Lagos governor had been advised to consult with his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who has already won the Lagos Central Senatorial District’s ticket, to step down and forfeit the ticket to her husband.

“For all I know, we are moving on; there will be no rancour over position sharing,” the source assured.

The new update for the messaging app offers Group Stickers and adds a 60 second timer option for all platforms. The BBM for Android version has llandscape mode and Android 5.0 Lollipop support. The latest update for Android arrived on Google Play two days ago, and another improvement for the app on this platform is being able to see when your sent pictures have been received and viewed by a contact.

As for the iOS version 2.6 for iPhones and iPads, this will bring a new user interface for iOS 8 offering transparencies to the appearance and a flatter UI. The new update also has support for the larger displays of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, but is still rolling out and hasn’t reached the UK App Store yet. Meanwhile BBM on BlackBerry 10 is also being updated and this will enable users to share multiple attachments and pictures simultaneously.
