Very well said. Kidnapping is not the exclusive preserve of Fulanis as disclosed by this guy here. Well, it seems as if this comparison may not be too appropriate. All over the world sports pay higher than traditional professions. For instance, I do not know of any doctor or accountant who earns as much as C. Ronaldo or Messi as an employee.

While, it may be apt to agitate for improved employment conditions for government employees, these players need to be sufficiently motivated to wear the national colours. You may want to note that some of them earn huge amounts in their respective clubs and they may not be inspired if the country chooses to pay pittances.

Basically we seem to be in a better position now. For instance, in years prior to this particular year, I have never been able to obtain Personal Travel Allowance (PTA) from the bank at he official rate. When they romanticize the 2013-2015 era, I keep asking myself whether it wasn't the same era that many states and federal government had difficulty paying staff salaries. In that same era Nigeria missed out on debt repayment deadlines. Debts to GENCOs were accruing and airlines couldn't repatriate their funds because we could not provide them with dollars.

I completely agree with your submission. The renaming of established institutions contributes to the erosion of their brand equity. Our leaders need to evolve to the point where they understand how "little" missteps like this particular one affect the whole system.

Privatisation is not an automatic wand that ensures success. It works sometimes and fails some other times. NEPA has been privatised, where is the light? NITEL and NICON nko? NIGERDOCK and Nigerian Airways nko? Daily Times, name them..

We tend to over credit Privatisations with all sorts of economic success and miracles, that we forget to get to the root causes of the failures of government businesses in Nigeria: tribalism/nepotism and barefaced corruption.

Bank of China, Airlines in China, refineries in China, most service related companies in China, are all government owned. So why are they super successful in China, but same models fail abysmally in Nigeria?

It is not necessarily who owns the business, it is the cultural setting upon which the businesses operate that dictates their efficiency and profitability..

I agree with you that economic systems depend on environmental settings. In Nigeria Government business is often treated as not anybody's business. This is evidenced by the typical nonchalant attitudes of Nigerian civil servants towards government businesses, patrons and overall performance.

And in line with that, I theorize that within the Nigerian cultural context, socialism may not be able to thrive. Rather it may be exploited to fuel corruption.

The examples of NEPA, NIGERDOCK and AIRWAYS that you used may not suffice to discredit my position given that the privatisation of such entities was conducted in the purest sense of privatisation. Rather it was some government officials transferring the nation's assets to their cronies under the guise of privatisation. So, essentially the surviving entities were vestiges of our national incompetence. Till date, I hear about power holding companies requesting power consumers to buy transformers and what nots. This practice, carried over from the days of NEPA, doesn't reflect total privatisation! No Uber driver can tell a rider to replace his engine.

Read a lot about his father. Unfortunately, i was never around Nigeria all through his tenure. But I have never read anyone seriously talking bad about the man. That says a lot. I don't know whether this is because Nigerians have been so pulverised by their tyrannical presidents, so often that they have now lowered the bar to the minimum, or that the man was actually good. Which way, one thing that is very self evident is that until Tinubu, Nigerias presidents without any military background have proven to be more humane and people oriented in their policies when juxtaposed with the ex Generals that have messed up this democracy.

Yaradua was a decent and down-to-earth President. Although, his he tended towards socialism which some argue was not the best for us. For context, he reversed the sale of the refineries thereby preventing their privatisation. Since that time, trillions have been poured into the seemingly unending turn around maintenance schemes!

He entered power and everything scattered. Nigerians really have short memory. U need to remember how so many people died under this man. So terrible, it a dread that seldom even the supporters of this regime.

Buhari's regime might not have been spectacular but Nigeria was not driving herself to greatness under GEJ too. Under GEJ, more than 2/3rd of the Nigerian states were insolvent, owing staff salaries ranging from 9 months to 36 months in some cases. In that same era, Federal Government was borrowing to pay Federal Civil servants. This does not mean that I approve of any of the regimes, but just to set the record straight. God bless you.

How you came to the conclusion that my earlier write-up supports the "school is scam" hypothesis baffles me. Perhaps you misinterpreted my earlier submission. My take is that education is not a scam, if you must know. However, youths have to learn to be able to use their acquired education to add value.

Today, many youths see school attendance as being performatory, thereby acquiring certificates that are not backed by commensurate skill sets. Consequently, many are not employable and more importantly they cannot start something.

Of course, there are some youths there who have risen above this shortcoming. These are the ones making waves regardless of the unfavourable dynamics in Nigeria.

It is sad that in the history of Nigeria's, most times, Vice Presidents do not end up succeeding their principals as President. It happened only once, and that was because the Yar'adua died in office and GEJ became president. If Yarudua didn't die in office, it might have been difficult for Jonathan to become the president.

Well, the devaluation of naira is either a blessing or a curse to individuals depending on the side they find themselves.

For people who earn in dollars or pounds, it is a blessing. For people who have skill sets that they can deploy across the borders, it makes their services more attractive to people who may require their services.

Their is a reason why China deliberately keeps their Yuan value low compared to other countries that have same economic characteristics. And the reason is that cost of services and production is lower in China compared to those other countries, hence China remains the top country of origin of most of the produced goods.

I do believe that the Naira devaluation can be a blessing to Nigeria if other factors are tweaked. For instance, power or electricity should be taken care of and regulation and corruption should be tackled head on so that we can reap the benefits of devaluation.

This doesn't qualify to be described as abdication of responsibility because power generation and distribution had been privatized prior to this. What the current action of the FG does is to allow various state governments more latitude in regulating and administering energy in their various domains.

This is really the problem. You forgot to add that OBJ sold the refineries because of the unending turn-around maintenance that was serving as a conduit for siphoning the country's wealth. However, Yaradua revoked the sale of the refineries and here we are today.

Former President Jonathan (GEJ) and his amiable wife are lovely people but the economy wasn't doing fantastic under him apparently not because of his doing but because of the structural imbalances in our economy.

For context of how unhealthy the economy was, about 2/3 of states in Nigerian federation were almost insolvent as underscored by their inability to pay staff salaries. Some states were owing between 8 and 18 months. Okonjo Iweala even disclosed that FG had to borrow to pay FG workers.

This is a very interesting question. I think it is important for us to stay abreast of the laws of the land.

The law allows you as a registered hunter to hunt anywhere in the country. Whilst there may be good reasons to question this law, as I often have to do myself, it is the position of the law today.

Now, as a southerner I think that our representatives and senators may need to do more to enlighten the people about their rights. There are certain organisations that we overlook but they may be important for our survival.

Thanks for your reasonable response to the fella you quoted. To add to your submission, it is not a secret that Nigerians enjoy disorderliness. The easiest pointer to that is the way Nigerians drive on the road, instead of maintaining single lanes you would often see them creating chaos on the road, except when there are law enforcement officers on the road compelling them to do what is right.

However, lessons are never learnt because Nigerians like to blame other persons but themselves. Until we learn to take responsibilities we ain't going no where as a people. It is sad.
