I understand your angst but it is unfortunate that there was a lacuna in the constitution as INEC was not mandated to transmit electronically. It is that constitutional lacuna that we should seek to block so that we can have better clarity with respect to our elections.

In all good conscience the PEPT couldn't have done that. Atiku's as well as Obi's counsels hinged their arguments on the (non-)qualification of Tinubu to contest the election. They ought to have committed themselves more to demonstrating how they won using the polling unit results supplied by their agents. Having not done that, no one can blame the judges.

You claim you own a piece of land that someone else is already occupying. You approach the court and instead of tendering receipts, bank transaction details to backup your ownership claim you went into the argument of how the other person wasn't qualified to buy land in the first instance. To reclaim that land go hard o.

Going forward, INEC should get the national assembly to pass a bill that will enable Nigerians with valid PVCs to vote online.

This way, we don't spend billions on elections, people can vote at the comfort of their homes, there won't be voter intimidation and suppression, and contestants won't have any need to go to court because technology promotes transparency and accountability.

This strategy is important if we really want to make progress as a country.

In the same way, it is not the volcano warming the earth; rather it is the carbon emissions that warms the earth. In both cases, the volcanic eruptions emit gases that either cause warming or cooling of the earth through some phenomenon.

I guess we are saying the same thing. It is the volcano that generate the sulphur dioxide which becomes sulphuric acid when it mixes with water. It is the sulphuric acid that screens out part of the heat from the sun that reaches the earth surface leading to cooling. The claim that it leads to population reduction is anecdotal and is still being debated by research scientists.

However, my intervention was just to corroborate the poster that said that volcanoes have both cooling and warming effects.

Warming through carbon related gases such as Carbon-dioxide and cooling through sulphur related gases. You can Google for more information on the phrase "volcanic winter".

He was warned against it by same economists but he refused to listen. GBP is going to 1,200 naira now...just one pound. I am quoting you because of my interest in non-targeted or what I call blanket subsidy. In my opinion subsidies should be targeted at the goods consumed ONLY by the poor man. Conversely goods and services consumed by the poor and the wealthy should never be subsidized.

My thesis is based on the fact that most industrial consumers of subsidized inputs have the tendency to maximize their profits at the detriments of the masses regardless of the subsidies they enjoy. And when the subsidy is not targeted the poor gets the wrong end of he stick.

Imagine, the hypothetical scenario where government subsidizes electricity by say #40 per unit. The poor man who consumes 5 units per day enjoys subsidy of #200 per while a wealthy industrialist for instance who consumes about 10 million units per day (this is assumed of course) enjoys a subsidy of #400 million per day. If the industrialist refuses to reflect the subsidy in his pricing (as most Nigerian industrialists are likely to because of greed) the poor is robbed. Hence, I argue that blanket subsidies in Nigeria do not serve the cause of the poor man.

In some countries, COVID lasted for more than 2 years though. And beyond that, even where it lasted for just 2 years the damage done goes beyond 2 years. To restart some manufacturing processes and plants that were suspended, time was needed. And many plants needed to wait for supplies from their global suppliers. There were backlogs that needed to be served and delays and congestion in ports of different countries affected logistics.

In this instance, SIEMENS is right to be talking about an extension since both parties could not have foreseen the pandemic that prevented the contract execution. Well someone else may argue that when a patient is hemorrhaging the first thing to do is to stop the haemorrhage before additional interventions. If one likens the removed subsidy to the loss of blood, the speed of implementation may be justified. Only one who is privy to the accounting books of the country will be able to tell how bad things are. Of course, we all should have an idea that this economy has been near comatose since around 2013 when Okonjo revealed that FG was borrowing to pay civil servants. Subsidy ought to have gone since Jonathan proposed it in 2012 but it is better late than never. The other thing that needs attention is the cost of governance.

My take is this,if emilokan balablu would be wise :merge EFCC and ICPC and all other duplicating anti corruption bodies into a single anti corruption ministry or you may still retain them as agencies or bodies,but the head,being Marwa should have status equivalent to that of a minister and the agency also so designated.
Having Marwa just as an agency head does no service to his dedication to duty and the important work he does.
You could also leave it as an agency but have him report to the presidency only with his post being redesignated as that of a 'National Corruption Adviser',having same status as the National Security Adviser,such that all corruption cases go through the new office to be headed by Marwa and him reporting direct to the presidency only.

Nice suggestions you made there. I just want to add that, that guy Marwa should contest for the Presidency of this country sometimes in the future.

People should seek knowledge for the sake of solving problems. Problem solving is what can make you the money either as an employee or as an entrepreneur. Whether, digital skills or non-digital skills people should learn to solve problems and make money.

Price control is very different from subsidy.
When the government distributes free fertilizers, that is agricultural subsidy
and it has no conditions attached.

If the government mandates that house rent in Lagos should not exceed 1 million per annum
or that DSTV cannot charge more than 10K per month.
That is price control, it has nothing to do with subsidy as the government contributes 0%
to landlord's building materials or Satellite maintenance.

When a private entity want to participate in a government-controlled industry and agreed to abide
by stated rules, there is nothing wrong if the DPR decide to punish defaulters as none of them were
forced to participate.
They applied of their own volition and went through a lengthy approval process willingly.
You cannot collect a conditional subsidy fund while at the same time want to operate freely.
It is never done. You either agree to the terms or exit the industry.

New York has rent control for certain apartments with ZERO subsidy. The funny thing is that investors aren't running
away from New York real estate. In fact, it is a highly active investment market. Anyone who doesn't want to be subjected to
rent control simply avoid dealing in the regulated sector.

Back to the subsidy vs price control.
If a body awards 50% scholarship to a student(a kind of subsidy).
The school cannot start crying about price control because the student is
only paying half of the fees. That is illogical. No price is being controlled!

In the Nigerian situation, the subsidy had some element of price control as in most cases the Government claims to pay for the shortfall so that selling price does not cross some threshold and then the Government fixes the price.

As far as I am concerned, the subsidy ought to have gone long before now. For instance, the industrialists like Dangote who consume millions of litres per day for of subsidies fuel per day do not reflect the enjoyed subsidies in their prices. Secondly, given the penchant for fill nationally owned companies with families and friends by those in power, it is best that organisations like NNPC go into extinction.

The only way that fuel subsidies might have made sense is if there was a way that the subsidies could be targeted at a segment of the population and not a general one. For instance you alluded to the school giving some particular students scholarships; that is akin to targeted "subsidy" and not a "general subsidy".

Again, if government continues with subsidy investors may not be attracted to the refining sector, except if government will be buying the refined product from them and subsidizing them too, to ensure that operate profitably. That seems to make much sense to me.
