what are you saying?

I don't really get your questions but if you're asking about the question I priorly asked

It's about why white garment prophets place candles in specific order when doing deliverance or prayer

Church denominations are still being formed. There are many reformers and disagreements even in the pentecostal fold. So would you say there are also unbiblical practices by the parent Pentecostal churches like Living Faith?

Dayo Olutayo left Living faith church to form Good tidings
Bishop George Adjeman left same church to form Winners Ghana chapel

And a whole lot!

Haha, c'mon my brother, how can you compare this with the protestant reformation. Why will you compare a pastor that formed a new church because he's not pleased they transferred him to another branch with Martin Luther 95 theses.

The reason of churches created with the protestant reformation is very valid. I'm guessing you don't know the history for you to make this comparison.

Like I said, I just want clarification, don't reply me from the view that I hate white garment church. I don't hate any church and have no problem with new churches created.

This thread started out so bright before going sour at the end.

I would have loved to see more of fxmasterz and otipoju argument rather than the character assassination that is playing at the end of this thread, because I learnt a lot from those two.

To the white garment church goers, we're just trying to understand your doctrine because it appears as a strange practice to us. Otipoju has done a lot of justice in clarifying some of your practices but there are still some parts I'm not satisfied with like the part of the candle lighting, some of the white garment prophets will go as far as placing the candles in specific order to do their deliverance or prayers.

This practice tends to bear resemblance with the occultic people's own. This is what led to the scepticism around your doctrine. Please know that this question is born out of sheer curiosity.

And to those using Catholic as a point of defence, it is actually weak because why would their be reformation that gave rise to many church denominations in christendom if Catholic practice is perfectly christ-like. The reformers disagreed with the unbiblical practices of Catholic which led to the formation of new churches.

I also think learning with books is a little bit underated, everybody wants to buy the latest hot course on Udemy. Hey, books are great too; when I started out with Java course on sololearn, everything thing looks like Greek to me. Yeah, I downloaded the Mosh Hamedani tutorial, but I knew it won't be enough without the premium course and I don't have the funds... guess what I did?

Went to my search bar and typed "best book to learn Java Quora". I got a ton of recommendation from quora but the name of a book kept repeating itself like a recurring decimal "Head first Java"; even in the comment section of Solo learn.

grin I quickly went to pdfdrive dot com to get the book and everything in Java began to make sense ever since.

Many prefer videos which is totally fine, but if you are just starting out.. Never underestimate the power of books especially if you don't have a Laptop. A lot of gems are on the pages of a book that an Udemy course will probably ask you to pay for.

Then, I will recommend learning Java first for those who want to have a strong background of OOP... If you have the time and resources, speak Java! You can never go wrong with this language. More importantly, you can't escape from object oriented programming. When you learn Java, you are simply learning OOP. OOP is Java and Java is OOP. My opinion though, am still learning....
You spoke my mind, the best way to get the hang of OOP in my opinion too is book. I struggled with it at first until I got the aforementioned book and consumed it. Though I had to read it twice before understanding the concepts well.

After finishing my first read, I practiced sometimes with it and I detect I'm still missing something, which prompted me to read it the second time and I caught the missing parts.

Most of the posts here reek of inferiority complex. How I wish the government can add history to our educational curriculum, it will go a long way in honing average Nigerians intelligence and our reasoning will be more rationalised than engaging in baseless disagreement like black man can't be eminent and whatnots.

About the case of IQ, do yourself a favour by browsing quora on the bias and flaws of IQ measurement. And before you start thinking I'm trying hard to defend blacks Africans, I'm not disputing the fact we will get the low IQ mark due to factors like high illiteracy, poverty, poor infrastructure etc. But all these boil down to individual mindset, have you thought about it why Nigerians who traveled out are excelling higher than the acclaimed high IQites in their countries. It just depends on angle you want to see yourself (positive/negative).

So if you chose to only see the negative aspect of yourself and hereditary that you are inferior to other race despite you still being educated, good for you. But don't expect others to subscribe to your school of thought.

You need to know programming languages are just tools for us with little peculiarities to each other ( i.e, they can more or less do the same thing), and the peculiarities can even be worked on with dependencies and framework.

Most BootCamp touch surface level, even freeCodeCamp, Documentation, Language Specification doc and books with Youtube works for the best. I did Aptech 4 years and never learnt anything useful. Self-learning has always worked, just read books, study and join some online open education.

Even in Andela BootCamp never went that deep, 1 year is not enough to teach core comp sci

Gooogle this stuff

Open Courseware and OSSu on github

all the best.
Thank you for this update. This is why it's good for experienced programmers to always share their experience.

I'm currently learning dart on freecodecamp, and surmising from the over-a-day duration of the video. I thought it will be very in-depth and it'll cover all scopes of the program but i was wrong.

Despite the tutor claiming to use dart to explain the basics of oop concepts that will turn a complete beginner to a programmer. I, having known oop concepts through java book, notice clearly that the man did not touch all oop basics, and the ones he explained was just brushed over and not profound.

Why do no one talk about designers? We are humans too cry

I'm a Product designer and I know for sure a designers Job is really tough yet we are hardly recognized. If somebody brings a topic about tech, the first thing on their mind is dev not even design.

Are there designers on Nairaland at all or is it only about Programming?

@ tmanis, you did well with the explanation to our Oga.

@ Telegon, savedInstance is still there but the modern way of designing android app prefer you to use ViewModel/LiveData and it is use in the MVVM pattern of design.

Thank you bro, I've also read the docs and I've seen that ViewModel is the best suitable for storing large amount of data. Seems my learning resource is outdated.

And op should keep up the good work of updating the thread, also with his sources of learning

I dont Know if youre familiar with android app lifecycle from onCreate() to ondestroy(). So what I mean is that sometimes when the system calls onPause() function on your app while it is running (by maybe rotating the screen, or call comes in, or you navigate to the homepage) , by the time it calls onResume() if the user is working with som data that has not been sent to storage, that data will be lost. The broad gist now is that ViewModel helps you to store that data, so its not lost, and LiveData helps you to keep updating the UI, such as changing the values of a TextView in real time from the LiveData without needing to manually write code to do that outside of the ViewModel class

I dont know if i explained it well, but thats how i understand it
Wow bro, I love your learning pace. But I'm curious about your way of storing data, isn't onSaveInstanceState method easier to use to store data than these two classes (PS I have never used the classes).

Okay boss

First, as mentioned here, I is the official support of Google. Java (as related to Android) is being phased out.. And I see myself ending up in on of the FAANG companies in 8-10 years, I want to be on the train getting up to speed especially Google and Netflix , not the one coming to a stop..

I actually started learning Java too. I'm self thought. I was finding it difficult to (think of ideas) and build a portfolio for myself as a backend person, portfolio projects that you don't need eclipse ide to run. I might also need a frontend person to help, if I want to do some fleshed out projects

Also, most job openings I keep seeing on LinkedIn and Twitter are always looking for Senior Java engineers... Rarely do you (I) see entry-level openings.

Full stack guys too seem more economical for small-medium companies. Why hire two people for frontend and backend, when you can get both in one

And those also have the advantage of using a framework of Javascript they are already familiar with to also handle backend...

To be frank, the reason I initially wanted to be a backend Java guy is quite lame lol, but it was because I wanted to go against the trend of majority of the people learning Javascript and becoming frontend developers... Till I got in...

I also feel like kotlin android development will leverage my experience with graphics design, and my love for consumer electronics.

I can still handle Java, if the need arises, but the simplicity of kotlin, coupled with the fact that it's the one Google is currently pushing seals the deal for me...

I just believe that one can be dynamic in this tech thing sha, and I want to explore things that catch my fancy, before I get locked in a space I don't really enjoy..

So that's it
Alright bro, so far you're well informed about your decision, you're good to go

We love to create shortcuts.

Despite this your preaching of getting a Cs degree if you can...... self-taught programmers will still pick jamb form and put mech eng or marine eng or medicine lol...knowing fully well that they intend to work as a programmer after graduation.
The bolded hit the nail on the head. I pray they listen

I've also been a victim of this your post, that's why I'm trying to incentivize others. And the tons of misleading informations online are the ones causing this.

Even on this nairaland, there's a thread that dissuade people from going to higher inst. at all, that prospective students should just focus on programming and making money when they finish high school.

Leetcode is not easy, forget how tensa preaches it, that thing is confusing as hell. Data structures themselves are no joke. Then add understand A* and other algorithms. You could spend a whole day and still can't implement Dijkstra's.

Having to learn Spring Boot alongside that means you want to land your first job after 3 years.

Tensa can preach about DSA because he has years of React experience under his belt. A newbie that can't write a simple stickman or host a simple FastAPi server learning DSA(without a comp sci degree) certainly must like being hired and fired because DSA only gets you a job, doesn't help you keep one
Thank you bro. What most don't know is that the guy Tenza has been in this game for so long, following his path as a novice may burn you out

These courses are rudimentary and not taught in depth, so if that's the sole reason you're going for comp sci, i am sorry to disappoint you.

Nigerian universities need to do better.
Bro, I want you to do some personal research, check some american tech companies requirements for employment online and you will know the degree is not useless. You will see a lot ready to employ computer sci. graduates without experience, while requesting self-taught to have minimum three-years experience. Though, a dull computer sci. grad. will drop at the interview section.

Concerning courses being rudimentary, have you seen any first-class grads who only stick with the syllabus, they always go extra-curriculum to get the first-class. So even as a student, to be highly employable, you have to be outstanding.

One of the chics recruited last year had a bsc in economics. She's in adora hack slack group. Computer science is definitely the way to go if you have the opportunity to go to the University today. I have even emphasized it here many times.
Thank you for acknowledging that computer science is important in this programming arena. This will help newbies in making quality life decision.

And I'm not crossing out the fact that self-taught programmer can also get employed into these top companies, what I'm trying to let nairalanders know is that, having a comp. sci. degree will give you a greater edge ahead of self-taught programmer in securing a job with the companies. A self-taught programmers will do like five-times the work a computer sci. will do to get the same job.

But you can still do all kotlin can do with java on android development.

Why I'm concerned about his switch is because there's lots of employment opportunities with java than kotlin, even if he decides to ditch android development in the future.

House for VI?gringrin

One guy who has recruited SWE for Google and Amazon did make serious emphasis on DSA. He said it's the key to getting into this companies most especially Google.

Another guy (a SWE for years) even said DSA is far more important than frameworks and technologies. He said different frameworks and web technologies will keep coming and going but DSA will remain forever.

These two comments were more than enough to convince me change my focus
I guess he forgot to tell you that your degree is also of high priority. You wouldn't need to overwork yourself too much to enter these top companies if you have a computer sci. degree.

Otherwise, you are still at low chance compared to a computer science graduates despite having higher DSA knowledge

And so it begins...

I hope to document my journey to becoming a native android developer here on this thread. Wish me luck, bosses smiley

Introduction:
- Computer Engineering graduate (Even though my memory about things that happened while i was in schoolis quite fuzzy, i just know i 'eventually' graduated - hope im not the only one feeling like this?? grin grin

- Long time graphic designer. my weapon tool of choice is the great Photoshop. i can do and undo with that software ehn, (if i do say so myself grin grin grin) i think i have a thread of my graphic design works somwhere here on nairaland

- in school, we were thought Pascal, C++, and assembly language programming (mostly theoretically though ) grin grin grin grin - like i said, i passed... sheybi if i didnt pass, i wouldnt graduate nah?? so dont look at me like that

- C (for Arduino) - I learnt this on the side while i was in school. it was a blast of fun. It was cool to see real life results of instructions given to a computer. Turning LEDs on and off, sounding buzzers, implemnting libraries for some niche sensors, diplaying info to console, led screens and 7-segment displays... alll the fun stuff

- Recently, i started studying and learning Java. i actually wanted to be a backend developer. i got courses and all... but why im switching,is story for another day grin

Now, we are here for KOTLIN and the beloved ANDROID STUDIO

Why did you leave java?

@Op, well done.
Considering the op is using phone for programming, we know he's a beginner and it's obvious this program is just for practice and not going to be deployed to public space, so I don't understand why he should handle exception.

My take on your program @op is that, you should have used three ifs rather than the else ifs, so if two conditions are met, you will see the two results rather than one.

Rock on... The journey is still far

The logic in this program is total crab... Sincerely I don't mean to discourage anyone here but let's look at something, if statement then else if and else if. Meaning there are so many unnecessary things in this program. Cos it's like saying if the food is not on the table (if statement)and it is not on the dining table (else if)and it's not on the stool (else if)then Mumm didn't cook anything (result). So what's the point?you could have just use the AND operator to tie the three conditions plus the condition in the logic just doesn't make sense at all.
An Int is assigned a value
Int i =8
If (i > 3)
And other else if statement are met then a string value should print

Like are u for real? pls be genius.!!

This your logical proposition seems like a joke to me. How will tying the conditions with AND operator show any result.

Come off your high horse bro, we are all still learners.

You need to know that android studio uses a lot of data when setting it up. So if all required tools you need have not been added, it will keep on forcing you to disable gradle offline so it can help you download it.

I'll advise you to on the gradle and let it do its work, and stop downloading manually because setting the right path and working manually-downloaded tool is hella of stress and frustrating.

When gradle complete downloading your required tools and dependencies, you can then switch it off.
Note: You need a lot of data for this.

After gradle is completed successfully, it's only on a rare case, it'll ask you to on it depending if your app needs a new thing for it to work, which is always low data cap.
