Good morning @all, pls my battery only charges for like 30 minutes then starts to make boiling sound. It does not last for more than 7 minutes after I disconnect the charger, could it be the charger or the battery has gone bad. NB: the charger is not a smart charger & the battery is a 200ah zenith battery

you should know your battery is gone..... I believe most zenith ba3s are SLA . So don't think of resurrecting.

Good morning room, my brother gave me a 200amp battery as a birthday gift about 3weeks ago, the battery has been giving me wahala since then as it does not last for more than 30 minutes, but I came across ceejay's post yesterday about adding distilled or rain water to a malfunctioning battery which I did and it has bounced back to life now, using it for 3hrs plus now. That being the case, my battery bank is 400 ah in total. What size of charge controller will be okay for my battery if my panel rating is a total of 600 watts?

well...a 150 watt solar panel has an optimum operating current of 8.38A. Makes a total of 33.52A of current but since you are will b using pwm, don't expect more than that current..... U can go for a 30amp(cc) or 40amp(cc)
40amp pwm cc is not common.

Guys hold on, If someone call you to install solar system, d approximate load is 400watt, to b powered for 12hrs daily.... N somehow you go ahead and use just 2 batteries;the battery may perform excellently for a while after mayb a year i sweardown dia will b a great decrease in power backup.... Nigerian don't know how to manage loads especially those that don't have full knowledge of renewable energy... They always think its like gen. Some clients allow battery to get discharged until battery get low... D battery life won't last if it keeps occurring, that's y DOD is always important especially if you are installing for someone... So u won't get a bad impression...... But if it's a diy person.. I tell u,you will always manage d load 2 batteries may still work.... I uses 8*9watt bulb in my house equivalent to 72 watts.... Someone who doesn't av full knowledge of saving energy might go for 40watt cfl or less...

3) 60amps is gud, so incase u increase panel in future, u dnt v to wori abt charge controller

oga zeestone99 2 batteries won't last dat long it better u tell d truth,come on u didn't even consider DOD na....n d solar panel... Hmnn 1020watt total of solar panel? It's not enough.Hw many hrs of sunlight? 20? mppt cc is okay.....

Complete view....i purposely cut dos space in d front of d ups to work as air inlet for fan which also reduce fan noise in d ups wen working, and d rear spacing also to allow hot air from the ups rush out.....d result eas amazing cuz D ups barely get warm under full load.... I also used ma hand to feel d damn hot air outlet..... It's worth trying..
Note:d spacing is on both sides of d ups

Here is the casing i used a very strong scissors to cut dos edge n plier to wiggle it out

I placed the fan very close to the transformer, and glue it.

@feflo y don't you try another method of allowing airflow in the working of yr ups.
Try placing the fan airflow facing the transformer n cut d rear back of the ups cover, hot air will pass tru d place....... I think it's better than yr suction method....i can give you instructional pix if u want to know about it.

not planning to go off grid with just 400watts panel and 2 batteries. but i decided to go for a very good inverter once and for all so there wouldn't be any need to change it after few years. all i need is to add more panels and batteries later.

I am one hell of a person that is usually satisfied with my own build. I have a 5kva Low Frequency inverter built with a friend. The efficiency of that inverter superceeds all I ve come accross. The quality factory made ones are overpriced and the cheap ones are useless. The inverter powers all my household items, from Fridge, Pumping Machine to electric kettle.
I will be building 9 more panels. The bet was cos he didn't believe solar panels could be built DIY. Making the first panel seems tough, but afterwards, it becomes easy. I used to be scared of breaking my cells but thats in the past now. You will always find techniques that best suit you. I can build 2 working panels everday. I discovered that most of them outside build their own solar panels.
If I have time after this, I will build solar trackers. its fun though

Am trying to go offgrid on a small budget (dou most of people around said its not possible) but am 70% done. To get this panel up and running, I will suggest you look for old windows frame, this will help you save cost very much. But I couldn't get old window frame so, I had to build one. Here is the breakdown
1. Frame = 1800
2. Glass = 1300
3. Solar cells (I don't go more than $0.5 per cell)
4. Encapsulation, 700
5. Wire = 150

NB. I had a bet with a friend that I will get this panel up and running, he said I couldn't. His word was that he ll build me a 60A MPPT charge controller if I win. I won this bet and he will deliver my charge controller before 12 noon on Monday

well, i didn't know you are on bet for building it. It a great achievement tho.
But the stress in ordering cells(probably online), d cost 0.5$/cell, those frame and glass thing......would probably be better to buy a factory made.
There is also risk of breaking cells during the build which greatly reduce d panel efficiency...... Maybe it all worth it. U bet u can tho

I asked you particularly because we have the same battery. The value changes from battery to battery.

Im2Busy2Bother, my smart charger turns off at 13.15V and I know verywell the battery is not fully charged.

Starting at this 13.15V, my inverter turns itself off with sole load of 100W fan after 3 hours max.

I take my battery out in frustration to my generator and use the 8.3A charger on it and charge for about 3-4 hours, when
the battery gets to about 14V I disconnect it. The battery unloaded comes back to settle 13.3V. At this 13.3 when I hook it back to the inverter, the single 100W fan can last 6 hours.


I am trying to pinpoint which is faulty, the battery or the charger.

When I first purchased the battery, the I remember rest voltage was about 14V (not 100% sure), now I can never get it up to that anymore.

that is the limit to all these chargers, different manufacturers different circuit built in them. My old charge controller settle at 13.3v as float charge(got damaged now) , my new solar charge controller goes to 14.8v for 10 minutes before resting at 14.1v as float charge.... A lot of electronic design changes in performance and accuracy
I think I am enjoying more from d setup now... Battery rest at 13.92v at night(if it get full at d day)

Sign of DIY. I didn't understand how to attach using the holes under the panel, so I had to attach wood to the holes then wood to the roof. Adapt and survive.
Please enlighten me about the proper way.

Can't be enough for 400ah, would take about 2 days to charge one 200ah battery fully from low state.
