There was no Ukraine as an independent country as at then, "Ukraine" then was part and parcel of the Russian empire with Kiev being one of it's capitals

You can consult the internet to see for yourself.

So the word "republic" used in this context doesn't mean they were sovereign prior to coming into USSR.

It was after the dissolution of USSR that most of these countries we have in Europe became an entity/sovereign nation.

The US central government controls everything. One state pulling out from the union doesn't change anything. It's the same with Russia.

90% of USSR territory is in Russia. They only had to change name because the USSR (United Soviet Socialist Republic) were no longer united, as the name implies.

Russia is the central government. Ukraine and the others were republics. In Russia, republics are the equivalent of states.

Ukraine never had the launch code to those nukes. It may interest you to know that, Belarus and Kazakhstan both had nukes as part of the Soviet Union.

This are the issues that led to the annexation of Crimea. The Crimean peninsula has for centuries been a staging post for war incussions into Russia. Armies have fought over that territory. Napoleon also used the crimea, the same with Hitler in WW2, so that area is strategic for Russian security.

Unfortunately, the problem isn't Ukraine but
1. Russia who invaded Ukraine in 2014 and took Cremia. Up till this , no one in Ukraine wanted to join NATO
2. USA, who used coercive force to make Ukraine give up her Nuclear arsenal with a promise to protect her from external aggression with the Budapest Accord. Unfortunately, the two guarantees for the agreement failed.
3. United Nations, who pretended that Cremia was not militarily occupied in 2014 by Putin. If the whole world had prevented this, the new invasion would not have happened.


Now , Finland and Sweden have joined NATO because of the aggressive behaviours of Russia. What excuse remains for Ukraine.

Solution:
If Ukraine will not join NATO, she must be allowed to "re-aquire" her Nuclear arsenal and not only this, to build it to its former size.

And no one should complain of Nuclear proliferation.

And after that, Ukraine may by the use of force re-aquire her lost territories from Putin!

The Ukraine war made no sense. In the 80s the agreement between Gorbachev and Reagan was that NATO will not advance east, as a precondition of the unification of Germany by tearing down the Berlin wall. Over the years NATO decided to be sneaky at the time Russia was in Economic straits following Boris Yeltsin's regime and started expanding eastwards with Poland, Lituania, Romania and the likes. The same US almost went to Nuclear war with USSR in the 60s over soviet missile sites in Cuba.
