The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that his administration will work to complete the construction of B6 and B12 roads linking Constitution Avenue to the Abuja City Gate, within the next seven months.

Wike, who gave the assurance following a tour of some abandoned projects in Abuja on Thursday, added that the renovation of the Federal Secretariat buildings would also be completed within the next seven to eight months.

Among the abandoned projects visited were the residence of the Vice President, awarded in 2010, and the residences of the presiding officers of the National Assembly, near the National Assembly complex, which was awarded in 2009.

The minister, who was accompanied by the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, and the Permanent Secretary, FCT Administration, Mr Adesola Olusade, also visited the construction site of the Millennium Tower, at the Central Area, Abuja.

Wike stated that he did not like to make excuses, adding that he would do the best he could to deliver some of the projects, while those beyond the capacity of the FCT ministry would be run up to President Bola Tinubu for help.

Describing the road linking the city gate to the Constitution Avenue as a “very important infrastructure” that would change the landscape of Abuja, he disclosed that Julius Berger had promised to deliver the renovation of the Federal Secretariat in the seven to eight months time frame

“I want to assure you that in the next six to seven months, the two projects would be completed,” he said.

“Before we were sworn in, Mr President told me and the Minister of State, to do everything we can to bring back some of the structures and facilities that will make Abuja a world class city. One of them is the road network and facilities like the Millennium Tower that will bring tourists and families to come around and have fun,” he said.

Acknowledging the challenge of funding, Wike said he would sit with the Minister of State for FCT, and the Permanent Secretary, FCTA, to restructure how some of the projects were being funded.

He added that he would rather attach funds to a specific project and complete it than allocate N500 million every year to a project of over N150 billion, and still fail to complete it.

“It means that in the next 20 years, you cannot complete the project. So, what is the benefit of wasting public funds? Fund is a challenge, yes, but we are here to solve such a challenge,” the minister said.

Other officials in the minister’s entourage were the Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, Mr Shehu Hadi, and other directors and top management officials of the FCTA.

Johnnie Carson says Bola Tinubu has three things that his opponents did not have going to the presidential election

An American diplomat and a foreign observer in the 2023 general elections, Johnnie Carson, says three factors were responsible for the victory of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

Mr Carson, an Executive Officer of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), spoke in Washington DC when the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, paid an official visit to the institute to engage on the concluded elections.

The diplomat said he co-led National Democratic Institute (NDI) and International Republican Institute (IRI), International Election Observation Mission to Nigeria during the elections.

According to him, Mr Tinubu, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, undoubtedly won the polls and will be sworn-in come May 29, except something happens dramatically with the court.

“Do you know why he won, he got the money, he had the best national organisation that worked for him and the ground game,’’ he said.

Mr Carson emphasised that for a candidate to win an election in Nigeria, like a lot of democracy in the globe, the three things, including substantial and significant financial resources were needed.

Others, according to him, are a national working organisation and a grassroots acceptance.

He said while Mr Tinubu had all the three criteria in his kitty during the polls, the other major contenders did not have all.

“Obi is, however, very popular, particularly among the young, educated, urban and sophisticated,’’ he said.

Mr Carson said the presidential election was one of the most competitive polls in Nigeria and in Africa.

He, however, observed that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) needed to up its game.

“Nigeria deserves the very best electoral process.

“To me, the problem is not with Tinubu and the other candidates,’’ he said.

Mr Carson hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his commitment in delivering a free and fair election for Nigeria.

On his part, the minister said considering where INEC was coming from and where it were today, there were massive improvements in the conduct of the 2023 polls.

Conceding that there was room for improvements, the minister said the introduction of a new technology Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) by INEC underpinned the credibility of the elections.

According to him, BVAS cut out fraudulent votes, ghost voters and multiple votes.

Mr Mohammed said the election was conducted against the backdrop of fuel shortage, mounting insecurity and poorly timed cash swap policy.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the minister also had engagements with the Council on Foreign Relations, a well versed think-tank on African affairs and foreign relations chaired by a Nigerian, Ebenezer Obadare.

He was also at the Reuters News Agency; The Politico, an international political newspaper, and Zenger News, a channel that publishes its contents on Forbes.

During his respective interactions with the Think-tanks and international media, the minister “presented the facts of the just concluded polls as against skewed narratives of the opposition and naysayers”.

The party’s State Executive Committee, led by Chike Eyinda, announced their suspension at a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

The All Progressives Congress APC in Rivers State has suspended the party’s chairman, Chief Emeka Beke, and Legal Adviser, Iheanyichukwu Azubuike, over alleged anti-party activities and financial misconduct.

The party’s State Executive Committee, led by Chike Eyinda, announced their suspension at a media briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.

The committee blamed them for the party’s poor performance in the 2023 elections in the state.

Eyinda also knocked former transportation minister, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for saying the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, who was declared the ‘President-elect’, Bola Tinubu, influenced the choice of Prof. Mahmood Yakubu as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Eyinda said, “We, the members of the State Executive Committee, therefore, resolve as follows: that Chief Emeka Beke, the Chairman of the APC in Rivers State, is hereby suspended indefinitely for anti-party activities, gross misconduct and financial mismanagement pending the outcome of an independent committee of inquiry as may be set up by the party.

“That until the outcome of the committee of inquiry, Mr. Omiete Eferebo, the Deputy Chairman assumes the office of the acting chairman with immediate effect.

“That Mr. Iheanyichukwu Azubuike, the Legal Adviser of the party also stands suspended for anti-party activities and financial mismanagement pending the outcome of the committee of inquiry.

“These leaders have been responsible for the mass exodus of members of the party as well as the failures experienced by the party in the just concluded general elections in the state.

“To demonstrate this, Rt. Hon. Amaechi, who contested and lost the presidential primary to the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, in active connivance with the state chairman and the legal adviser, a week to the presidential election, called the leadership of the party to a meeting and directed all the APC members in the state to work for the PDP in the general election.”

Eyinda said the directive given by Amaechi badly affected the fortunes of the APC in the 2023 elections.

He described Amaechi’s statement allegation as an “affront to our President-elect and the highest level of anti-party activity”.

“Also, since the present chairman (Chief Emeka Beke) took over the mantle of leadership of APC in Rivers State, all funds released for the 2023 elections were disbursed by the chairman and his cronies without the consent and approval of any member of the executive working committee as prescribed by the party’s constitution.

“We urgently call on the National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu to set up an independent panel of inquiry to look into the activities of the above-mentioned leaders with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problems of the party in the state,” Eyinda said.
