Five new suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis have been confirmed by the Plateau state government. The cases have been reported to have occured in Langtang South and Mikang local council areas of the state.

This was made known to the general public as the state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Kunden Deyin Kamshak, addressed journalist in Jos. The Commissionee said that they

“got calls from the local councils and deployed its team to the areas. So far, our findings confirmed suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis.”

Kamshak explained that a blood sample or cerebrospinal fluid of a suspected case must be diagnosed at a government approved medical laboratory, as this was the test that would confirm the case as being that of cerebrospinal meningitis.

He further added that three of the suspected persons had commenced treatment, while the others were yet to begin receiving treatment because their blood samples had just been taken to the laboratory for analysis.

In a bid to tackle the spread of the disease the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has directed the management of the Federal Medical Centre, Gusau, in Zamfara State not to wait for referrals before treating cases.

The Minister gave the directive when he visited the hospital, urging the management to set up a rapid response team to locate suspected cases.

The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Binta Adamu Bello and a team of international development partners, accompanied the minister.Also, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and his Kaduna State counterpart, Nasir El-Rufai have expressed fear over the devastation of the outbreak.

Dortmund have announced that tonight’s clash against monaco has been cancelled and will be played on thursday at 18:45 local time instead. This information comes after three explosions went off near Dortmund’s team bus.

Marc Bartra was injured after three explosions went off near Borussia Dortmund’s team bus as they prepared to travel for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final against Monaco.

A statement from the local police has confirmed that an explosion occurred as the team set off for the first leg of their tie at Signal Iduna Park.

“In the run-up to the Champions League match of BVB against AS Monaco, there was an explosion near the BVB team teambus shortly after 7 pm,” it read.

“To our knowledge the windows of the bus are cracked (fully or partly) and one person was injured.

“It is not yet possible to say exactly what the explosion was or exactly where it exploded.”

The police agency later tweeted: “We can confirm that there have been three explosions in the area of the team bus.”

Meanwhile, Dortmund confirmed that the game has been postponed and would be played on Thursday.

A bus driver of NNPC in Lagos state has ran into trouble after he took company bus to his lovers house to flex and the bus got stolen by robbers.

The driver, Wasiu Aliyu was arraigned on Monday on two counts of stealing in an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court.

The father of two who hails from Ilorin, Kwara state woke up at his lover’s house on Assfood Street, Oriola, Alapere, Lagos only to discover that a Toyota Hiace which is worth N23m had been stolen.

Aliyu informed the police that he had been driving the stolen bus for over three years, and had no hand in the stealing.

He said, “ At about 8pm on January 21, I went to my girlfriend’s house in Oriola to pass the night. A man came to wake me up around 4am that he saw some boys inside the bus.

“Before I got to where the bus was, they had left with it. It was a mistake that I parked the bus on the street because there is no security there.”

A police prosecutor, Inspector Benedict Aigbokhan, who brought Mr. Aliyu before the court, said he had allegedly committed an offence, which contravenes sections 285 (1) and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Mr Aliyu pleaded not guilty and elected summary trial.

The presiding magistrate, Mrs. O.A. Akokhia, admitted him to bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties in like sum while the case was adjourned till April 18, 2017 for mention.

The 2016 Nov/Dec NECO GCE results has been released and the National Examination Council, NECO has announced that 60.55 of the total candidates who sat for the examination made five credits and above which included Mathematics and English Language.

This was made known by Charles Uwakwe, who is the Registrar/Chief Executive of the National Examination Council while addressing journalist in Minna. He said.

“The number of candidates that excelled with five credits and above including Mathematics and English language is 28,530, making 60.55 per cent,”

Breaking down the results Uwakwe said, 35, 744 (75.87 per cent) passed with five credits and above, irrespective of Mathematics and English language.

Mr. Uwakwe said that the results, announced 60 days after the conduct of the examination, was a landmark achievement for the council in the business of conducting “a hitch-free and credible examination in the country”.

He said that improved logistics arrangement ensured that appropriate standards and excellence were maintained from planning stage to the release of results.

The National Independent Electoral Commission (INEC) has pledged to conduct credible elections in Ekiti and Osun in 2018.

Mr Adedeji Soyebi, the INEC National Commissioner for SouthWest Zone, made the pledge while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday at the Zonal Strategic Plan Retreat for field officers of the commission in Ibadan.

Soyebi said the previous polls had been successful, adding that “any election conducted this year or other time will not be an exception.’’
“It will based on the principle we have used in conducting elections.

“ INEC will build on its various achievements in the conduct of free, fair and credible elections and make sure that there is tremendous improvement in the future elections, “ Soyebi said.

The commissioner said the Zonal Strategic Plan was aimed at generating ideas and inputs from electoral officers on the field before embarking on any national plan in readiness for the 2019 elections.

“At the end of the retreat, a synthetic report will be ready which the commission will present at a national stakeholders meeting involving political parties, civil society organisations, security apparatus and other stakeholders in the conduct of elections,’’ he said

Soyebi urged the participants to make meaningful contributions that would play vital roles in assisting the commission to be more effective.

Earlier in his address of welcome, Mr Ariyo Ayoola, the Acting Administrative Secretary of INEC in Oyo State, said the commission would develop a new strategic plan.

According to Ariyo, the plan is expected to lead the nation to another successful general elections in 2019.

He commended the commission for taking the retreat to the states to elicit local content, noting that the move was an attempt at ensuring collective ownership of the final copy of the strategic plan.

Ariyo, who said the shared experiences of the participants would enrich the outcome of the 2017-2021 strategic Plan, urged participants to make rich inputs.

Participants were drawn from staff of INEC in all the South West states.
