The New Ondo State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, Mrs. Grace Akpabio charged corps members on the core values of the scheme during a familiarisation tour Oke-Agbe Akoko, Akoko North-West Local Government of the state.

Mrs Akpabio during her speech at the Oke-Agbe Akoko, Local Government secretariat advised the corps members to be of good behaviour and not forget the core values of the scheme. She said;

“The NYSC was extablished with the aim of among other thing; To inculcate discipline in the Nigerian Youth by instilling in them a tradition of industry at work,”

“To raise the moral tone of the Nigerian Youth by giving them the opportunity to learn about higher ideals of National achievement, social and cultural improvement.”

She also dismissed claims that corps members who were alleged of sending nude pictures of ladies’ to the internet have been arrested by the military.

Mrs Akpabio said the alleged corps members were only handed over to appropriate authorities, so as to secure them from possible attack by the victims and their relatives.

Mrs Grace also advised corps members serving in the State to always remember the core values of the NYSC scheme and remain of good behaviour. She said;

“We must not rule out the fact that the NYSC Scheme was designed to emphasize training in good citizenship and leadership which it has been doing over the years.”

“While the majority of out youths have internalized the ideals of the scheme, we could not however rule out few ones who due to peer pressure or faulty upbringing have chosen to take a contrary step.”

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has made it know that corps members who are yet to receive their personal allowance should expect it in a couple of days.

This was made known by the scheme in a statement on their Facebook page. It was stated that the delay in payment of personal allowance is as a result of technical problems with the payment platform.



See full statement below;

The Management of the National Youth Service Corps regrets the delay being experienced in the payment of personal allowance to Corps members.

Management wishes to inform Corps members and the rest of the public that funds have since been released by the Federal Government, but the delay is as a result of technical problems with the payment platform.



We wish to further inform that the service providers are working round the clock to restore connectivity so as to allow seamless crediting of Corps members’ accounts. We are confident that this will be achieved in a couple of days.

Management appreciates the patience shown by Corps members in the face of this unforeseen challenge, and appeals for more understanding as we are working assiduously with the relevant agencies to address the problem.

Payment of Corps members’ allowance is a top priority for the Federal Government and the NYSC Scheme, and wish to restate our commitment to the welfare of the youth on national service at all times.

Here is the true story behind the news of a corps member attack on another corper with weapon in Ondo State.

The news of a corper attacking another corper with weapon in Akoko south east in Ondo state, featured on many blog platforms on Saturday 26th August 2017, but the truth is the case was blown beyond proportion, as it was presented as a case of assault on a colleague but was far from it.

According to our findings, it was a case of a quarrel between two corpers, Yakubu Suleiman and Adina Josiah. The quarrel led to a fight and Suleiman got injured in the process.

The incident got to the notice of the NYSC State Coordinator Ondo State, Mr. Sunday Aroni, who intervened earlier today to put the matter to rest.

Though before this intervention by the State Coordinator, some sets of people have intervened in a bid to resolve the matter which they actually thought they have done. However the victim felt justice was not done to the case because he was not compensated for his hospital bills as promised by the Chairman of Akoko South East local government.

Hence, Yakubu Suleiman, presented his grievance on the social media without recourse to the NYSC management, even though it was later discovered that some mischief makers capitalized on the occurrence to hit at their own target.

The State Coordinator immediately got wind of the case, and swung into action by inviting both parties and the president of Muslim Corpers’ Association and that of the Nigerian Christian Corpers’ Fellowship to a reconciliation meeting at the NYSC State Secretariat, Igbatoro, Ondo State.



The Akoko South East Local Government Inspector was also summoned, and some management staff were equally present at the meeting.

The victim was pacified and compensated at the meeting, while the corps member that provoked the other, Adina Josiah, was asked to write an apology letter and an undertaken that he was not going to torment the victim any longer.

At the end of the reconciliation meeting, both parties shook hands, embraced each other and also assured the management of the NYSC scheme, Ondo State, that nothing of such would happen again.

Most people will say that the SAED programmes are boring, and they may have a point. But what are really boring are those lectures that are held on the parade ground under the canopy for hours right before the SAED commences. We were each to choose a SAED programme to join and I was looking to acquire some ICT skills specifically Graphic Designing, Web Designing, and Digital Marketing, so I always found myself vacillating between the New Horizons and IIHT stands. They taught us quite alright, but they were so stingy with information. They would teach you surface-level stuff (not even the basics) and refer you to register with them so that they can teach you the ‘main’ thing after camp at corper prices. The problem was that these so called corper prices seemed so exorbitant. So wetin come be the real price?

The most fascinating thing about the SAED programme was that, of the entire entire skills one could acquire, it was Makeup that had the highest number of corpers in attendance; more specifically - female corpers. You should have seen the crowd there, while the ICT niche had a significantly lesser number of people in attendance. Perhaps that was an indication of just how important looks are to most people in today’s world. I was sitting there wondering what was wrong with the young man that was lecturing us. Yesterday he taught us introduction to Digital
Marketing, today he’s teaching Computer Engineering. How can one learn anything at this rate? He should pick a struggle biko. I was busy fuming when my phone started vibrating in my pocket. It was Toyo calling. My sweet, sweet Toyo…

‘Hello,’ I said.

‘I can see you,’ she said, giggling.

‘Where are you?’

‘Just look for me.’

‘Where na?’ I asked.

‘I said you should look for me,’ she insisted before hanging up. I sighed and looked at the bevy of ladies paying attention to the lady teaching them how to professionally tie a gele. My eyes scanned through the audience, over the voluptuous legs, thighs, arses, and boobs on display before I finally found her in a corner with her gorgeous friend, smiling at me. It was always so easy to spot me out of a crowd due to my ‘up-Nepa’ complexion and it annoyed me to no end. I went to the back of the hall and she followed suit with our respective chairs in tow. Every time I saw Toyo I was always in marvel at what the good Lord had done. You see, there are boobs and then there are jugs. Jugs are the elder sister of boobs. Thus, what Toyo was carrying can be said to be jugs, not boobs. She gave me one of her trademark destiny-reformatting hugs and I felt a stirring in my loins. I prayed that my John Thomas would not embarrass me in public.

‘Wait, give me one more time,’ I said with arms spread wide as she gave me another hug.

‘You know, I was thinking about you just before you called. It’s like our minds are telepathically connected,’ I said smiling. She nodded in the way that someone who doesn’t believe your story would nod.

‘Story.’

‘I’m serious - everything about you. Your height, your carriage, your ebony beauty; the bright future you are carrying behind you and the wonderful view in front of you. I just find myself thinking about you and I know that you feel the same way too.’

She averted her gaze from mine and grabbed my hand, playing with my fingers.

‘Or you don’t feel anything for me?’ I goaded.

‘Wayward let’s talk about another thing abeg. Drop the topic.’

‘I should drop the topic. This is how heartbreak starts o, so you don’t love me?’ I said, acting sad.

‘I love everybody.’

‘Based on Jesus Christ wey you be abi?’

I watched as she kept caressing my hand.

‘I love everybody but I love some people more than others. That includes you,’ she added after a pause. My eyes widened in shock.

‘You love me? I made the list of people that you love? That means now I can die a happy man,’ I exclaimed as she burst out laughing.

‘You’re so naughty!’

Her friend came to join us and the three of us sat there gisting for a long while. I felt a bit uncomfortable though because sometimes I’d catch her staring at me from the corner of my eyes. She was probably wondering what I wanted with her friend, what my agenda was. The truth is I wasn’t sure myself. Soon her friend left us and we decided to take a walk around. Most SAED programmes had finished for the day but it didn’t matter as no one was allowed to go into the hostels or Mami market until it was 2PM. She held my hand as we walked, and occasionally I would come across one or two of my roommates along the way. Our eyes would cross paths and they would nod in acknowledgement of the package beside me like, ‘Wehdone sir. This one na confam.’ Honestly, walking with her in public gave my ego a huge boost because she had one of those bodies that can make a man turn his back on his family. And she was just 19! Remember, Babcock University? I swear these kids graduate younger and younger each year. I stopped to get us some ice cream, and she wrapped her arm around mine and rested her head on my shoulder.

‘That reminds me. That your school sef, what kind of name is Bab-Co.ck? Like, grab a cucumber or what? Does that mean all the girls in your school love co.ck?’ She rolled her eyes in exasperation as I said this. You don’t need to point it out though, I know I was objectifying her on a per second billing.

I looked her over from head to toe, licking my lips for added effect.

‘Could this be the reason why all your condiments are standing at attention like this? Blood of Orubebe!’ I placed my hands on my head like Papa Ajasco.

‘Please just stop. Stop it!’ she screamed at me. I looked at her to see if she was serious and to my surprise she was. I quietly handed her an ice cream cone.

‘Every time you are always talking about my boobs and my ass. Can’t we talk about something else?’ she said, looking deeply into my eyes as she spoke. ‘Please?’

Something else? Like what?

‘Okay,’ I said. She smiled and wrapped her arm around mine as we proceeded to stroll leisurely down that stretch of road – in utter silence.

‘Ahn ahn… say something na,’ she lamented.

‘What do you want me to say?’

‘Something… Anything…’

I shrugged and continued licking my ice cream.

‘So you mean you can only talk about my boobs and ass and nothing else?’ she asked incredulously.

I shrugged and looked at her despondently. Only she could restore my ability to speak once more. Only she had the power…

‘Fine,’ she said helplessly. ‘You can talk about my boobs and my ass if you want.’

I laughed hysterically and hugged her, pecking her on the cheek.

‘Don’t mind me love. You know I just like looking for your trouble.’

We walked and talked and gisted and soon it was 2PM. A female voice over the PA system announced that the SAED programme was officially over for the day. I told her I had to go to the hostel to get some sleep and she gave me another wonderful hug for the road. I promised to call her later in the night to hang out and bade her farewell. As I made my way across the volleyball court towards the boys’ hostel, the unthinkable happened - I caught Nife staring at me! She was seated with the jock at a corner beside the volleyball court. The jock had this serious and sullen expression on his face. That look that guys usually have when they’re declaring their undying love and affection for a woman. I quickly removed my gaze and stared straight ahead, pretending I couldn’t see them seated just to my left. My heartbeat increased as I walked, and I struggled to maintain my composure like my role model, James Bond. The annoying thing was, I could still feel the pain she’d inflicted in my heart over a week ago. Sure, it was only a little pinch, but the pain was still there. I consoled myself with the thought that I would see Toyo later that night, even though I felt nothing for her. Besides, Nife was waaaay finer than she was.

The honest truth is that Toyosi wasn’t really my type.
